  • Good vision is critical for safe flight. From seeing where you are going and avoiding other aircraft, to seeing nearby terrain and determining aircraft altitude and distance to visual references, the more you can see the safer you can be.
In this video, we review external factors that may impact a pilot's vision, including good day and night vision and scanning techniques to keep your eyes looking outside the cockpit, as well as at your instruments. Using the cone of the eye in the day, and the rods in dark lighting to use your peripheral vision and managing dark adaptation, are both ways of improving your vision while flying.
Additional physiological factors may also affect pilot vision, and wider decision-making skills, so we recommend using the I’M SAFE Checklist to cover Illness, Medication, Stress, Alcohol, Fatigue, and Emotion, each of which are reviewed in this video.
