  • Runway and Taxiway incursions are important to understand, not only for safety but also as a special emphasis item on FAA checkrides. These incursions are the incorrect presence of an aircraft, vehicle, or person on the protected areas of a runway, and can lead to collisions and pilot deviations, so it is critical that they are avoided.
Runway and Taxiway incursions can occur as a result of factors and challenges including unfamiliarity with an airport, construction, misunderstanding ATC, expectation bias, or simple distractions. As a result, it is important to mitigate these risks by being familiar with the airport diagram and identified hotspot areas known for having a history of actual or potential incursions. A suitable pre-flight briefing, removal of distractions, familiarity with signs and markings, and keeping your eyes outside the cockpit can all help reduce the risk of runway and taxiway incursions.
