Fighting him close and then preemptively running to the left after poison spit even allows you to dodge it without jumping or rolling (though I found it a bit inconsistent to do without say running attacks from fists or thrusting swords for that extra little speed boost)
A year late to this brilliant ode to the most BS attack in Elden Ring (including Waterfowl dance 😄Two years after spending so many hours with ER, and as I was prepping for the DLC I thought to myself, "You know what? I'm gonna learn the secret behind this attack." And man, am I glad I watched your video. Cheers.
This helped me immensely in my RL1 bow only run. I was so close to having the fight down and this video gave me the last little bit I needed to know about the attack, and I can also vouch for dodging to the left. Not sure why but it seems way more consistent.
The best way in my experience to handle this attack is to block it. Even using something like a caestus it still seems to do very little stamina damage or chip damage. Learning to dodge it is probably really rewarding but as “the average player,” I don’t mind taking some damage during fights as long as I’m having fun Of course, Feeble King pointed out to me that the EULA’s fine print says that blocking officially sets the game to “easy mode,” so I’m not a real Gamer anymore, but it is an effective method.
I'm doing my own rl1 playthrough and I was struggling with this attack, rl1 really makes you appreciate how painful some of the attacks in this game are lol. Radahn's double spin and Godskin Noble's quick explosion are some other attacks that I never knew I hated until now

Personally I just used the strategy of sticking close to the edge of the lava to never see this attack at all. I'd also use Great-Serpent Hunt immediately at the start to momentarily stun the Snake and give me more time to get close. Rykard was actually the boss where I really started to understand the value of aggression in Elden Ring. I ended up beating the entire fight in under 3 minutes, which felt amazing. That was the point where I stopped using Spirit Ashes and did almost all of my bossfights solo.
@@loopine It's been a while since I last fought Rykard, but I think I did. I recall trying to position myself in between the individual puddles so I don't get hit, but that was inconsistent. I believe for the most part I ran to the side and tanked whatever hits I got. Although, since I do currently have access to Rykard on another character so I can try out strategies for dodging the spit.
@@loopine Okay so I've actually been testing for two hours or so. First off, that thing I said about standing in between the puddles is nonsense. I must've misrembered, since that never worked at all. What worked though was running to the side (preferably to the left side, that worked more consistently for me) with a slight forward tilt. I didn't evade the spit completely, but I only ever took a tick of damage. And I wasn't able to do it consistently, but the running jump sometimes dodged the attack completely. Further on light load, I was once dodged the spit completely by running and rolling. And generally rolling mitigates the damage pretty effectively so if you're not hitlessing it's an option for staying close. As for when it uses the attack, I don't think it uses it when you're right in front of the Lava, but standing just 2-3 meters away is enough to make it possible. More interesting I think though, I noticed that it will only use the Spit if it's head is on the left side of your character. Circling around clockwise and keeping the head on the right side as much as possible greatly reduces the risk of this attack coming out.
This move is the main reason trying to no damage this boss on NG+7 was such a pain. I just ended up playing cautiously, trying to keep a certain distance to the boss while also making sure I could move to the side when ever necessary. I also just outspaced the red skull move since it can sometimes be quite the mess.
Yo - nice strats but I have some corrections. Firstly you can dodge poison by running to the left and rolling while just outside the lava, this is consistent and means you don't need to deal with earthquake at all. Additionally if you wake up phase 1 rykard from the side he is guaranteed not to do the attack. I have several kills on my channel including a 40 minute rl1 torch kill in case you want a demonstration of how the poison dodge works ect
I don't have footage of this, maybe I'll try and record some later, but I swear in my RL1 run my strat was to charge the serpent and dodge into the head.
I haven't had trouble with that attack since the first time I fought him. You can dodge it at close range with a running jump. Maybe there's a sweetspot where if you're just far away enough, you can't dodge it by jumping to the right?
I'm not sure, I think I would need to do dozens and hundreds of attempts and just pull stats to really he sure but I think what I do now is good enough for me. And yea if I'm close I'm still going foe the running jump
i wonder if the new perfect block physic tear works on it lol. because if so you wouldn't even take chip damage and could easily block it with shunter and still have stam left. i've been using it to perfect guard some of the crazier DLC AOEs and it works great, plus it lets you do guard counters with a two handed weapon for comparatively little stam than without it. goes super good with great shield talisman and feels a bit less brain dead than statically gaurding
i feel udmb... whil i do remember it being hard to dodge, i also remember just simply run-jumping it quite instinctively in my blind run... p.s.: btw, works only for phase 2, but you can still L2 spam him if you time your AoWs correctly when he enters the rancor stage, before the cast stun him, count to... 5 seconds i think it was? and then press L2 again, loop and win.
The serpent hunter ashes of war Stagger him out of it as well so I like to run back after poison immediately do it and go back to the close range but sometimes he does a hyper armor attack instead so doesn’t always work
@@loopine not an ash, it's a spell Makes it so your shield blocks all damage types Sadly it only lasts 30 seconds and needs investment in both int and fth to use, I can see this being meta if fromsoft buffs it

You could do a video on Morgott's flurry attack he unlocks at ~25% HP. The one where he pulls out all his weapons for a 20 hit combo. Super easy to dodge on light roll. No idea how to dodge on medium roll.
@@loopine I wouldn't recommend it for regular players, but: You can hug him on the side and all the hits just pass over your head. Parallax2137 found that one (afaik), very funny to look at.
Been playing with Magma Guillotine AOW lately and i really like it. The first part of the AOW is super good for low profiling and there's even a jump as well. I haven't tested the jump part on Rykard, do you know if it works by any chance? Great video too, vow of the indomitable and raptors of the mist are goated for sure.
I actually did I believe and don't think it works but I want to try it on some actually jumpable attacks. That's sick I didn't know you could low profile with the startup, there's not many things that let you do that in this game
@@loopine Your character literally goes flat on the ground, it works on a bunch of moves. It's very nice! I also like to use raptors of the mist and life steal for low profiling, there are also some spells that work well, burn o'flame and black flame ritual come to mind.
Was this boss buffed or something? Its lava attack is SO fast compared to this video. It literally doesnt give me time to react. It just instantaneously does it and one shots me and for some reason I cant hit it with bows long range its like the arrows pass through this boss.
Nah yea looking back at my game its doing that lava attack atleast 3 times faster. Yours looks super slow and telegraphed compared to what I'm seeing and I dont know why.
@@loopine even ashes of war don't work well on it lol. Maybe you can Mist Raven the middle AoE. I noticed that once you get hit by the middle part, you can just chill in it since it doesn't continuously create new hitboxes.

Yea looking back at the footage it seemed like you might be able to strafe it. Seems like the sooner you starting running perpendicular the better

bit niche but blocking with a shield with Immutable Shield on should make it so that you don't take any damage from it
