Great video, I just turned onto your channel. I received a 22 lightning in August of 22 and was 3rd from Salinas Valley Ford. I also had the first battery issue from the dealer and they were awesome with service and gave me loaners throughout the entire process which did take around a month as well.
I have a standard range XLT and love my truck, I have a round trip commute of 90 miles a day with free work charging. I also have solar on my house and haven’t paid much, but i currently have 50k miles. It’s our go to vehicle unless we tow or long roadtrip, haven’t got my Tesla adapter yet.
There are some features I wish I had from a lariat and the ER battery, but love my truck and works exceptionally well for my use case.

I've had my 22 lightning platinum since December 22. Love it and will never return to an ICE vehicle. I often cgarge my truck from my 13 kw soar system. Since I only drive it a couple of times a week with no more than 60 miles round trips tgat works out pretty well. I never bought the home integration system as I saw that as a waste of money. I have a generator receptical at my main panel which I've connected my beds 240 receptical to in order to put a charge into my 23 kwh lithium home solar batteries. Charging from the grid is my primary backup with my 11 kw generac being my final backup. I love having 9.6 kw of nearly endless AC power available to me wherever I go. I've even charged a stranded nissan leaf by the roadside. Since the leaf J1772 max charging is 6.6 kw my 240 volt charger gave it a relatively fast charge so the owner could make it home.
Definitely love this truck. In my opinion the best EV truck on the market for my needs.

fantastic video!.. I'm a 2023 Lightning owner, took possesion in may 2023, You did a great overview job..I've had 0 issues with it (1yr 4 months, 12,400 miles) I live in Idaho and have Road tripped to Vegas and SLC a couple times.. average 2.2 - 2.5 Kw/m on freeway but 3.2 in city.. It's extended range 131 kw max capacity & keep it around 80-90% when home... I agree with the built in Nav isn't great I use plugshare & android auto 100% of the time.. but I also have a MagSafe case & the wireless charger doesnt like mag safe cases.. so if it's naked It will wireless charge fine but it's hard to own a S24 ultra without a case, so I also USB charge .. As far as the audio cutting in & out I'm experiencing similar issue, it's android auto disconnects & I have to reconnect or reset bluetooth on radio.. it's frustrating but it's what happens during chip shortage 2022-2023 .. I loved all your upgades & will look into picking a few up myself, but I would definantly buy it again.. I do wish the bluecruise & phone as key wasn't subscription based after 3years..it's a reason to trade up in 2026 .. not only do we get heatpump, j3400 standard & the newest bms system but we reset those pesky subscription timers.. I do gripe a bit about the depreciation of being early adopter but it's been a fantastic truck

There is only a handfull of EA chargers in Idaho & utah, I watch Kyle Conner from @outofspec & he does quite a few race to vega's so I was able to use his knoweledge to help me charge.. I do find Tesla locations very convienant with lots of chargers & EA with 4 spots 8 connections & normaly 1 offline.. Max charge rate i've seen is 171kw on supercharger v3 for about 9mins then it dropped to 143kw/h .. I enjoy meeting EV owners at the chargers, always have fun conversations, and we share a muteral respect.. I am in total agreeance EV's arn't for everybody. and I'm no way trying to convince ppl to buy in, it's very contriversal in Idaho, some ppl love it, others absolutly hate them, it's very polarizing to hear the reasons behind it.. but like religion I'm just here to be me and not force it upon anyone.. I pick up my 2023 F-150 lightning lariat (antimatter blue) tomorrow and couldn't be more excited! I took have a fairly short commute and solar so the car truly pays for itself. I also have a 3rd gen 4Runner that I put premium in so I completely get both ends of the spectrum. I'm on the east coast so winters i have a charging cost due to my strategy. I personally choose to charge at my job and sell back my solar due to selling at a higher rate than considering the time of day and how much I have to pay to charge (I think .04¢ kwh) so extremely cost effective. The biggest struggle with the A2Z is latch is manual and not intuitive. Let me start by saying, what an excellent long-term review, I really appreciate it. I'd be curious to hear your perspective on buying a 2022 Lariat extended Range model with about 20,000 miles or less on it, do you think it's worth it? I'm pretty positive from a commuting perspective, I don't have any concerns . However, from a taking long trips, of 4 hours or or more and even an annual trip from the Northeast to the Southeast driving from the Northeast to the Southeast give me some pause. I'm curious your opinion and if you have concerns about the depreciation on the electric car industry. I have test-driven two F-150 lightning, and I think they are absolutely spectacular driving vehicles. Love to hear your perspective and again what an excellent review.

    • @bowefamilyEV
      @bowefamilyEV  2 місяці тому +1

I'll start with the easy stuff. I love the truck and with access to the Tesla Supercharging Network I don't have any concerns with road tripping it. I did a trip to Vegas from the Bay Area (be sure to check out that video!) about 1k miles round trip and that was in my Standard Range. Hopefully they have the adaptor from the previous owner. If not, it's worth getting one of the 3rd party ones while you wait for yours (I recommend the new A2Z one, I also have a recent video on that 🙂) Navigation is a bit clunky and it takes more effort than it should because neither the internal route planning nor Apple or Android have been updated with the Tesla Superchargers. Hopefully an update is coming soon! Buying used means someone else already took most of the depreciation hit and as long as you find a good deal I think you're not exposed to anything dramatic there especially since the T3 next generation truck is delayed until 2027. Most of the big hits happen in the first year or two.
Now the tougher question with buying it used, is really around the warranty. With a 22' and 20k mile you have about a year before the bumper to bumper expires. I am normally not a fan of extended warranties, but with EVs in general everything is so expensive that I would problem try to find a good deal on one. Check out Granger Ford as a place to start. They have a good reputation for their pricing. I would not be concerned with the battery or motors since they are good for 8 years and 100k its all the other little stuff. When I had the battery module failure early on, I was fortunate that Ford extended my warranty to 6 years and 70k miles as a gesture of goodwill. I think it's something worth considering.

You're right to mention the politics surrounding EVs. It's truly a shame. Both sides are doing this new technology a disservice.
I have a Tesla Model 3 (2023 RWD) - love it, so many myths out there about them. It's true there are some minor drawbacks (range / fueling speed / fuel access) , but those will be solved in the next 5 to 10 years. EVs are the future, not sure I'd have another ICE vehicle.

Fine for a local landscaping business or when taking a boat to a local lake or marina or a trailer to a swap meet or flea market etc but if someone is doing serious towing regularly they typically are using an F250 or Silverado 2500 and I’d stick with diesel for those situations.

Beeping of the frunk is super annoying on the lightning. The screen issue with the dash switching is a bug, like many of the things with the software in this truck. Bluecruise kinda sucks so dont worry about it to much about not having it. The user interface and native tools are where this entire truck falls on its face. With that screen the bottom third is always dedicated to hvac which is a huge waste of space. No native apps and dependency on the phone is a swing and a miss. After two years of ownership as well I cannot fathom why we have a youtube app and no native streaming audio apps integrated. I think fords software team has failed on this truck in a big big way.
Not showing any charge info is also a problem, I dont get how they ever shipped an ev without that data visible. The lag time for charge assist will never get better, if you go into bezel diagnostics you will see that the cpu is at 85% almost all the time sitting idle I think ford ran out of compute on the truck. Also not being able to use the apps while driving is a miss. All and all the truck is ok, the software is a pile of trash.
I think you got lucky, or i was unlucky with a dealer that was able to handle your issues. I had to go though a buy back case with BBB to get ford to do anything about my issues. It was beyond frustrating. I think what I have noticed is the folks that are positive about the truck get a great all out response from Ford, where others that are critical get almost no help. Good video, calls out some good points. At the end of the day I dont think I would ever buy another Ford product after owning my 22 lightning plat.

I guess I got lucky. I love my lightning platinum. I'll never return to an ICE vehicle and probably won't ever need another vehicle. But if I did it would be a Ford EV truck. I charge my truck from solar run everything I need in an emergency from my truck. I've charged other EV's on the road with my truck. It's great having 9.6 kw of nearly endless AC power available wherever I go. My trucks SOC has never been below 20% and I only charge to 100% once a month. This truck does everything any of my previously owned F150's will do since 1983 & at a fraction of the cost. Even when I was solely charging from the grid I was only paying $.08/kwh in winter & $.12/kwh in summer. @2mpk that's driving 100 miles for around $4. And since winter range isn't quite so good, with the winter price drop, that's about the same $4/100 miles.
My prius got 50+/mpg this 7000 lb truck pretty much doubles that range for me.
I will say this, if I had to depend on public chargers I wouldn't have purchased my lightning. Period.

@@JohnDiMartino in the two years that I’ve had it it’s worked really well for my situation and circumstances. I get closer to 270 miles on a charge with the way I drive it around town and in commute traffic I’ve done a couple long road trips and it definitely does end up just under two hundred miles . if I had the budget the extended range would have been great. I’d love to see these trucks get somewhere in the $45 - $70k at the top end. With that said, I can get from my house to Sacramento and back or to Monterey and back or Half Moon Bay and back on a single charge so overall it hasn’t been a dealbreaker having the smaller one. Obviously that won’t be the case for everyone and there were a lot of people getting 23 lariat extended range trucks in the mid 60s, which is less than I paid for mine.
