  • Far Cry 3 is seen as the best game in the series,Most people remember it due to Vaas and his great performance, but I think its protagonist Jason and his journey is even greater. Lets dwelve deep into the story and the character to understand what makes him one of the best protagonists of all time.

Hes a black mirror to the player that should be obvious, also a reference to heart of darkness and how the state of moral peril causes people to breakdown as the need to kill conflicts with their civilized idea of what it is to be human and they suffer an identity/moral crisis

No one makes more sense to become Jason than Jason. A spoil rich kid with an older brother who seems to be some sort of combat vet. Jason knew how to parachute, hang glide, shoot a gun, and probably a bunch of other skills we see him start with right in the beginning. Spoil rich kids in real life just squander the opportunities given to them so often. Jason just happened to be one who came from everything, went to nothing, and acquired everything on his own.

@@remrem-gx3mlit’s a stereotype due to how many squander different hobbies and skills for fun. It’s due to the fact that oftentimes they are totally unrelatable and we view them as such by them doing this that we could even say it’s an invented stereotype.
Seriously, Jason is even described as having exactly that beforehand in the backstory of his character.
That aside, he could have become useful later on if it weren’t for Rook island as an accountant or fitness instructor if he got a real job instead of partying it up. He wasn’t all that harmful until he was pushed to be in the story of FC3.
And those rich kids being “less of a threat” is just weird in my eyes in your comment. Anyone can be a threat when they present actually being a threat. An ambush predator hides and strikes from the flank, as we played in FC3. Otherwise, they are loud and easily spotted.
Be aware as best you can. Be like Jason fresh after the start, building himself up and learning. But do it freely, without anyone putting you on their strings. Do that for yourself.

Been saying this for years. Jason is one of the more realistic depictions of what a person would have to become to do these kind of things. I think about someone like Nathan Drake and imagine how he must be one twisted MFer to take people out without blinking but his character doesn't actually play into his intent at all. Tomb Raider 2013 tried to show Lara having a moment with her first kill but then its just kind of brushed off like she is fine with killing now. Jason gradually shifts and changes into someone who really shouldn't be likeable. Its almost like breaking bad. He becomes what he has to for survival at first but then he realizes that he loves what he's become. Either way, great vid. You got my sub!

      I don't think it's that hard
Have you ever heard of the concept of "moral injury"
In a case like Nathan Drake, he doesn't really take any lives that could be considered innocent. It's almost always self-defense. As long as he subconsciously looks at it like that it's unlikely he would actually have a break down or anything.
I remember watching this video where a guy was interviewing a vet who was a chopper gunner, the only event he actually seemed traumatized by is the only event where he had his morals tested. He was watching over a convoy that was getting shot at from a building, they were waiting for orders to fire but it wasn't coming, he fired anyway. After he saw women and children running from the building and wondered if he had killed any.p

There is some suspicious things about Dennis and Citra. Like how does Dennis know Jason's full name? He's told Jason not Jason Brody. Then how is the ambush a trap if it was a trap for Jason? Like was Vaas big brained or did Citra tell him. Then what about Vaas stabbing Jason with the blade? Did Vaas actually stab him or was it drugs or something? But either way Jason "kills" Vaas with that same knife. You know the super important and protected ceremonial knife. Not to mention that Citra shows up right after the fight so was she there the whole time? Then Jason wakes up back in the temple with Citra.
All this stuff makes me think Vaas was still under Citra's influence in some way. Where he wouldnt preform the ritual but still loved her. Also Vaas should totally know where the Citra's temple is, he's just not attacking it right? How else would these "plot holes" happen?
Also Vaas calls Citra his sister but they have different last names and ethnicities. Vaas also has a separated backstory from Citra. Vaas tells us about Citra's "Me or them" ultimatum but for Jason that includes killing his friends, girlfriend but more importantly his brother. The last piece of his family excluding his mother. If Citra's ultimatum is supposed to have you kill your past self by killing the people that tie you to it then Vaas can't be her brother. I personally think Vaas and Citra aren't actually related but Citra's spell broke Vaas in a way where he thought they were family. Thus making him opt out of the ritual since its taboo to sleep with your sister. She then sent him to be a double agent for the pirates. That might also be the other reason why he let Jason run, to send him to Citra if he could survive the jungle. I mean Dennis says he found us on the beach but theres no way. Unless he's using beach to mean the embankment of the rivers, he lied about where he found Jason. ITS ALL SO SUSPICIOUS!

Many people found him annoying, but don't seem to realize that him being like that was on purpose to further drive home how much the island changed him. He went from a rich socal party guy to, as he himself admits, a monster. A killing machine drunk on the power he feels when killing.
When I played Far Cry 4 I quickly noticed how muted Ajay Ghale appeared in contrast. Jason was talking a lot, Ajay rarely ever speaks. When playing Jason I felt like playing an actual person, Ajay didn't feel like it as much. Then ubisoft decided "screw it, protagonist doesn't need to speak", which is a damn shame. Part of the FC appeal to me is feeling like being there and having the POV-character speak and actively take part in the plot goes a long way to do this.
There is more exploration and nuance missing, hence why I wouldn't classify him as one of the greatest. But he sure was the best in the Far Cry series nad at least had a personality and development.

At first he’s just a vanilla by the books Delta Operator sent on a mission to check for survivors in a ruined Dubai. By the end, he’s a completely different person. He slowly becomes more unhinged and ruthless. But not just him, it affects his 2 squadmates. "Gentlemen, welcome to Dubai."

He wonders what a kid so young did to earn all his tattoos. Then quickly remembers where he is, and what precisely he did to earn his. Murder, jumping off waterfalls while high, murder with knives, etc.
Eventually, I think maybe Liza gets bumped into by a bunch of guys. Jason proceeds to nearly kill one, while thinking about how to murder the rest. He gets stopped by Liza probably.

This is exactly why I loved the insanity DLC of Far Cry 6. Playing as Vaas against Jason highlights how they become completely interchangable between one another. He taunts Vaas in an almost identical way that Vaas taunts him in FC3. It's a common thread through all the DLC, but the use of a mirror as an upgrade station feels unbelievably appropriate. They have walked the same path, to see how Vaas can overcome any aspect of Jason, he must first overcome that part of himself. Not to mention how the stories mirror eachother, Jason's plunge into insanity, and Vaas' regression into sanity

I love how the island is insanity, its a cycle of doing the same thing over and over again.
One man rises in strength, bravery and cruelty, he takes over the island, intrigued by her mystery, drunk on power. But the island doesnt want to be ordered around, the island wants someone stronger yet, someone who wont stop the fight but will fight forever, so she kills him, and then the cycle repeats.

one major thing about far cry 3s story is: it is simple.
it does not need a myriad of characters that then all get to few screen time. the characters are not equiped with a ton of flaws and back story. and the story does not hold a lot of plot lines and twists.
far cry 3 tells you just enough to make everything click without narration getting in the way of gameplay. and that's what makes it great.

I kinda bought it just because i saw a ton of this game on the game shelves. at first i wasn't sure i was going to enjoy this, then came the vaas scene and was immediately blown away by his dialogue. i remember laughing when grant died thinking that the only person who has the realistic chance of surviving this game doesn't even get past the tutorial and i am stuck with this kid.
after a 10+ years , i still comeback to this game from time to time. it's like a coming of age movie with elements from lord of the flies. This game has asked me alot of questions about myself and taught me on how to decide and plan. (apart from Jason's descent into madness and murder spree of course :) ) this game came to me in a time when i wasn't really sure of what i want to do in life, living day by day to simply exist. almost relationships with family were not really good, just like being stuck in island where you just try to survive and your starting from scratch with no one to guide you.
TLDR: good game, will play again

I never viewed Jason as annoying or a bad protagonist. I always thought his journey was very intriguing, going from your average spoiled brat to a merciless and detatched killing machine. Does it always hit? Not necessarily, but it’s still intriguing regardless, especially when you see the parallels with Vaas and how Jason could become the very thing he swore to destroy. I personally view the good choice as the canon ending, given the whole plight to kill Vaas and Hoyt stemmed from Riley being “killed,” but once he not only realizes he’s alive but he’s forced to torture him, that’s him at his lowest and finally realizing the path he’s on isn’t worth it anymore. Plus personally, I find it’s much more impactful for someone who’s become so monstrous to leave that life behind and try to do good again, however hard it may be.

With FC6, it feels like a mercenary getting exhausted of their client more than a revolution. There isn’t a lot of visible growth and I can’t really connect the dots on the Danny as I progress in the game aside from skills to kill with, since they did serve in the military it’s not all that crazy.

FC3 was my first real FPS I went out and obtained... rather covertly... leagally, of course! I was just like Jason minus the filthy wealth, I grew up in a squeaky clean fortunate place, so when I, just like Jason drop into a lawless place filled with awful people, we killed all of the bad guys. Did the world a favour, one step closer to saving everyone. Far Cry 3 is genius, because we are just like Jason Brody, we came here looking for fun, and we did whatever the first "trustworthy" guy asked of us. It was a complete first gaming experience for me too, and that made the experience all the more memorable. Fumbled around trying to kill 3 pirates, dying to a poisonous snake, questioning like hell how we got this magical "tatau." Jason's and the player's journey best describes the FAR CRY experience, and thats why Vaas is the greatest FAR CRY antagonist is because he is the direct comparison of what Jason is becoming, he doesn't kill Jason point blank just like how we'd switch to a different weapon, it'd be funner that way. It's no wonder Vaas likes Jason so much, he's finally not alone in the madness. That's why I hope Ubisoft isn't simply toying the possibility with the FC6 Vaas ending.
Just imagine this possibility: in a completely different setting, 11 years after FC3, Jason Brody is still haunted by his PTSD of Vaas and Citra's manipulation, and he struggles to not into his literal Killer instincts in his everyday life, but out of nowhere Jason and Vaas are forced to work together to overcome a greater threat.

It wasn’t until he saw his little bro that I wanted to steer the ship.
It’s BEAUTIFUL! When his big bro dies, he enters the savage world of fighting non-stop.
Yet it is the presence of his little bro that pulls him back.
That’s why I was super happy with the iconic ending of saving your friends… yet I speak with IRL friends and most of them got turned by the killing.

Agree, aside of Jordan Peterson at the end.
He literally says you should think about what you want to do and do it. Not become him.

easily one of my favorite protagonists of all time, i never understood where the hate originally came from. if you played it and just immersed yourself in it, you would immediately love the transformation. the cheap one liners do suck if you just payed attention to that alone, but the tone of voice changes throughout the game, which alone signifies your player transforming, but it never went that way when it came out
not only that, but the whole time leading up to the scene where you kill vaas, you, yourself become more and more bloodthirsty at ending vaas, connecting yourself more to jason and in turn accentuating the fact that jason feels that killing is a game and is winning

I especially liked the Far Cry 6 Vaas DLC with Jason, not only being fully voiced, but he's a crazy bloodthirsty lunatic from Vaas' perspective

Can I just say, Dennis is one of those characters where the perspective matters a lot. He's basically the same as those hyper-combat-focused military guys who are hellbent on creating the best killing machines possible like the people who influenced Frank Castle into becoming The Punisher. They're traditionally shown as controlling and hyper-aggressive, but I bet when you're in the shoes of a lost nobody like Jason, they feel like your mentor and someone to be trusted.

I definitively remember how Jason went from a scared rich kid to a merciless killer. While he was weak when he started on the Path, the player itself was the one to pretty much be his instinct. So many people had played their fill of shooters by the time FC3 came out that jumping into the game would feel like doing it all over again.
But then you're presented with the idea that Jason isn't a shooter protagonist (at first) but rather just a guy put in a highly stressful, difficult situation. So yeah, Denis put him on the Path, Citra encouraged him into it but we, the player, as the primal instinct for Jason, were the ones molding him into what he becomes. The tatau represents the things we want Jason to learn and master so that by through him, we might excel further.
So the definition of insanity? Doing something over and over and expecting a different outcome? Well, what do we do in most FPS? Do the same thing over and over... and by extension, we're showing Jason that through gameplay. In a way, I feel that by the ending, you're basically choosing for Jason for him to become the usual FPS protagonist by killing his friends and embracing the Path... or free them as a mean for the player to tell Jason "That's enough, you don't need to be that guy anymore, the kind of guy we've played over and over again in other games."
I hope that one day, they remaster FC3. Much like Spec Ops : The Line, FC3 has a lesson to teach people.
