I thought about one of the CH Tele’s they look great. But pretty sure they’re 7.25” radius, which does not suit my playing at all as I tend to keep bending until I hit the right note, lol 😂

My Dave Murray strat had the same problem above the 12th fret. Fender covered the repair costs at a local shop but it needed a lot of fret work. Plays great now my fave strat ever.
Yeah, I can’t imagine that it was like this when it left the factory - difficult to tell when you buy used - but it was unplayable above the 12th fret. I had to take a fair bit off the frets to get them level enough to be able to fret a note, never mind bend one. It’s a great guitar though, apart from that middle position, obv 😄
It’s real nice to play. Neck feels fantastic. Pickups sound good (apart from the middle position, obv). I thought they were quite expensive though, I’ll say that. Hence why I waited for one to come up on the used market. Worth checking that option out.
Strangely enough when I checked my Tokai Tele it has exactly the same issue. Both are just single string trees - maybe a second string tree to dampen the G string? That seems to be the biggest offender.
@@DunsysGuitarWorld By all rights every guitar should have it to some degree. Even between the bridge and tailpiece can ring, more so its a string through guitar. Its one of those things that you typically wont notice until you dial some gain into the amp and hit it. I mute all of my guitars behind the nut with a piece of folded over sticky back velcro, the fluffy side. Works a charm for LPs, might need something a bit thicker for a fendger headstock. Otherwise Gruv gear do a velcro string mute that wraps around gently to dampen any unwanted noise, might be better for you?
I think the out of phase sound is kind of a novelty setting for most guitarists. Peter Green nailed it accidentally when he got “that” Les Paul. It works beautifully in some things but I’m not a fan of it. It can suck the tone out of a tune sometimes. Nice solo sound at the end though. There was almost some “note bloom” going on but that was maybe to do with the Big Muff. Another entertaining video sir. I shall cease my meanderings. 👍🏼
I've never felt the need for an out of phase sound on my Tele but it's meant to be a feature of J Mascis... Maybe swap out the tone control for a push/pull one so it's still there for those rare occasions when you might want it? It's one of the options on my Les Paul Classic. Every so often I pull the pot to remind myself why I don't use it!
Yeah, I can’t think of a time I’ve heard J playing his and thinking “um, that’s a wee bit bad”. Seems to suit his style and set up perfectly. For me though, I’d be the same as you and your Classic. Only turn it on once a year to make sure it was as bad as I remember it 😄. I had a Greco Ace Frehley Les Paul that had The Worst Middle Position Sound In History when you had the bridge and middle pickup turned up. Dearie me.

I do love a good Tele. I think the bridge sounds great, but not always a fan of neck pickups in Tele's and the out of phase thing potentially sounds a little thin? I presume they are fender pick ups made for the artist? I have a tele with Mojotone Classics in it and have to say they are very good.
Yeah, pretty thin - not really my cup of tea. Pretty sure these were the specs that J picked for the pickups, so I guess he's cool with it. And, to be fair, he does make it sound immense!

He's using a Seymour Duncan Custom Shop BG1400 (Billy Gibbons in the bridge, recently been released as a none custom shop / mainstream pickup) and a McNelly A5 in the Neck (I have the same setup in a US Tele). Both amazing pickups. The Original '58 actually has, I think, '54 pickup's in it. Jay bought this guitar from a studio he used in the 90's and the owner told him that the pickups had been swapped. Fender still call the reissue pickups '58's so it's unclear exactly what are in J's original. The neck pickup is the real star in the show for me. It's my favorite pickup ever. In fact I love this guitar so much that I don't want to change anything about it which is strange as I don't like the neck! This is why I installed J's touring pickup configuration in a US Tele rather than this one! It's the most resonant guitar that I own and I use it for all my clean playing. Through a JC-120 or a Mesa Boogie Triaxis it sounds absolutely incredible! I also don't use the out of phase sound and may modify mine to be back in phase (a common mod for owners of this guitar) as the pickups are so good that I want to hear them together!

I didn't care for the out of phase deal, so I put it back to normal. Mine took a fall from a wall hanger that it should never have been hung on (not much to hold onto with a Tele headstock). I had to have the neck repaired as the skunk stripe shifted inward. My tech had to cut a new piece of rosewood to fit into the channel. It's better than new now. Of course, he had to sand it and thus, the aged nitro tint finish came off with it. That's fine though, it's raw maple as would happen naturally from playing a nitro neck (he sanded very carefully) then we agreed to use gunstock oil on it. Love it. Reminded me me of my favorite necks in the business - MusicMans. It was also a bit heavy, so I had him cut a belly contour into (used a satin nitro black paint on the exposed raw alder). He also did a smugglers route and removed every bit of wood he could under the pickguard - which is now a metal chrome one. I, personally, found the plastic stock one a little cheap looking. Sure, the metal one adds an oz or so, but it looks so much better. It's a USA Fender piece and it fits around the control plate with no gap whatsoever. Kind of amazing actually. It's also the same height whereas the plastic one is thicker. Love the guitar more now and it's definitely a one of a kind now. Side note about the belly cut - with the satin black nitro, it just adds to the road worn aesthetic IMO. I'd almost be tempted to do a forearm cut and just use a tinted nitro finish on it. But the other side of my brain reminds me that the blue sparkle finish was the third reason I bought it. The other two reasons being the neck and the pickups.
Dunsy, I actually like the out of phase sound and all the other settings on that guitar. I guess it’s not something you would use that often if at all.I use a lot of pedals so like it.👍🍺
Hey Dunsy! I was curious what the J Mascis Telecaster sounded like. It has a great driving and natural tone. Thank you for the demo. 👍Also, one of my American telecaster does have a couple of sharp frets. Just makes me feel that if its not 100% hand-made, there is always potential for a flaw unfortunately.
I recall Mascis saying in an interview that he didn't realize it was out of phase (until it was taken apart to make this signature model) because he always only used the neck and bridge settings.
I don’t have a Tele yet but do have the required parts to assemble one now, so I’m looking forward to seeing how it goes! Putting together a partscaster does seem to be a lot of fun and a good learning experience - definitely some fettling involved! 🎸
You sir, need to get fettling! Yeah, 100% that would be fun - and you get to pick the parts that you want to go in it, rather than changing some post-purchase. I mean obv you will end up changing stuff, because that’s what we guitar players do!

oh man, that's got those Early 90's dinosaur album sounds all over the C and G chords. The first work seems to be a fender thing as does that nut sitar ting. (File them at an angle slightly towards the tuners dunsy to bring the string angle down and wind the lower strings as low as you can. I'm still looking for a decent tele myself so helpful video man. Sounds amazing. Excellent playing
I was playing The Wagon and man was it sounding good. Probably originally played on a Jazzmaster, mind you. I actually tried my Tokai Paisley Tele after this and it has exactly the same issue with that sympathetic ringing behind the nut. Tried angling it down but it’s no better. A second string tree required, maybe?
The wagon is a personal fave. Green mind was underrated in my mind. I recently said he recorded most of his solos from the early 90's on with that tele not the jazzmaster. Yeah another string free is a good call. I'm currently shopping around for one of the japanese 60's style teles myself currently as the current Mexican stuff is disappointing quality wise and the U.S. Is just too pricey. Keep us updated Dunsy.

What is it about Telecasters? They are the simplest of guitars, two bits of wood bolted together, with some wire, and metal parts. They aren't the prettiest, and there are guitars that I love looking at, and owning, but when it comes to playing, I want a Telecaster! I have two of them, and they are both blue?
Yeah, I took that Avril Lavigne Tele on fly gigs for years - in 2 pieces in my luggage, lol! Never had any issues when I bolted the neck back on at soundcheck in another country. Everyone should have two teles!
Great vid, Dunsy! So, would you say that the frets were malevolent? 😂 In all seriousness, the out of phase sound is fine, if not useable in all situations. This is why we own more than one guitar, so that we have some variety when we want it. Right? I've had the weird ringing behind the nut before, myself. On one guitar I solved it by using a small velcro strap. But, this isn't always foolproof (trust me, I have the fool part down, cold 😜). Just out of curiosity, is it hum cancelling in the middle position? Anyhow, that's a stellar looking and sounding axe! I love Teles. But, even after having many come and go, I've yet to find one that I've bonded with. Someday, maybe. Glad you got some good ones.
Like on off piste slalom run! When I hit any note on the first string above the 14th fret it was playing the note on the 17th at all times. And it was all over the shop on the other strings. Worst I’ve ever seen on a guitar, tbh. There was no way anyone was playing high register solos on this. What a braw guitar though - and I can check the angle of my hat in the mirror pickguard. Brilliant! I do like Tele’s - better than Strats 👌

Ringing behind the nut isnt an issue of the nut itself, stuff something soft under the strings behind the nut to mute them.

Aye, it’s waffer theen on clean sounds, but with the right amount of muff (snigger….) it sounds not too bad for some crazy histrionics.

Yeah, I think the way J uses it with multiple gain stages and muffs really works. For me though, the computer says no.

Ive never seen any sense in aged or relice'd guitars.... I would definitely of bought this if it wasnt aged....
If you felt the neck, you just might change your mind. With jumbo frets (a huge reason I got mine) and a very broken-in feel. It's fabulous.
