Can you make a video to show how you put it back in-phase? I can't find anything anywhere on how to do that without getting overly complicated without actually showing how to do it. Thank you.
Thanks for the review Joe! Good to see you back! I’ve been eyeballing (and occasionally drooling over) these since they were announced. I love J Mascis’ style and these look stellar! I appreciate your honest opinion sighting the pros and cons. You’ve convinced me! This will be the next guitar that I’ll be saving my lunch money to purchase. Great vid! Thanks a lot! Stay sloppy 🤙
Wow, your one of the few players that say it has a thick neck!!!!!!!!!!!!! I own one and for me, it's definitely NOT a thick neck. Good video Joe, they do sound awesome.
Nice demo, the only one I have seen with the out-of-phase thing changed. I do think it has a thin sound when out-of-phase and clean, but with distortion it sounds good. What I would do is put a push-pull pot or a 5-way blade switch so you could have both options. IIRC, J's '58 is stock, but the bridge pickup had been replaced with one from earlier in the '50's and the pickups are modeled after the ones in his Tele. I agree, the pickups sound great.
I’m a telecaster guy and a Dinosaur Jr. fan, I am not into the out of phase sound either but I love the bigger necks now since I bought my 50’s road worn Telecaster. I’d definitely buy this but I am also thinking about the Vintera 50’s telecaster too, I’m torn.
@earendilsstar4485 I could but I really don’t want to tear apart the guitar just to fix a feature not everyone likes. I honestly don’t see what is so cool about out of phase pick ups
@@md770 "tear apart"? It's two screws and light soldering. Pickups aren't out of phase, it's the wiring. It's a thing some are in to. I'm not into it myself so mine's corrected to regular neck/bridge setting. I can get the same basic tone with a clocked wah.
Love mine, killer axe! But my trusted seller (an amazing luthier also) made me choose about the out/in-phase and I picked up back in. More useful to me. Grat video!!!
The "special tool" is called a screwdriver... It's designed to be adjusted with the neck off. If you want to adjust it with the neck on, that's your choice, but you'll need to buy a (non-Fender) produced tool to do so. Your real issue with it should have been that Fender initially advertised this to buyers as made in the US, but when it came out they decided to hide the serial numbers in the neck pocket because they all start with MX... Made in Mexico.
Great review! I just bought this a couple of days ago and love it except hate the out of phase middle position. Any advice on how to rewire is appreciated.
Still trying to understand how it's "baseball bat thick" when reported at .820-.920... thinner than my 50's Vintera Mod or 60's Vintera Strat. My Ultra Strat -.820 -.890....
He's exaggerating. It's a beefy rounded "C", but nothing like the neck on Les Paul Specials, because of the smaller radius. They have 'jumbo' frets, not 'extra jumbo' as he says.
I found it a bit dark so i took both pots out for push pull A500K's. Used the tone push pull to switch between inverted and regular phased parralels and used the volume push pull to engage a treble bleed consisting of a 180K with a 1nF cap in parallel over the volume pot. For the phase inversion i cut away the connection from one pole of the neck pickup to the shield of the neck pickup and provided a 3th wire on the shield can. It is now a, excellent sounding guitar at all volumes with all my amps.
Good descriptions and it does sound great! I have one and it’s also terrific sounding, these guitars are deeply resonant and big sounding for a Tele…I’ve owned many Teles, but none that sound exactly like this one. Sorry to hear about the tuner…mine didn’t have that issue, but has a couple of other slight issues. From the 3rd to 7th fret I can feel the ridge of the skunk stripe, it’s a little bit annoying….I might sand it down to get it flush with the neck eventually. Also, I have to keep the action on my high E a bit higher than I prefer because despite the jumbo frets and 9.5 radius, it still frets out too easily on bends past the 15th fret. Maybe a high fret? It’s also a little heavier than I’d prefer at 8 pounds even (I have a bad back and generally search out lighter guitars). Despite all that, the neck feels great, it sounds great and it’s definitely a looker. Thanks for the overview ✌️
Got mine when they were released for three major reasons - 1. Jumbo frets 2. Blue sparkle 3. Description of the pickups Complaint: It's far too heavy. I had my tech (who's also a Luthier) do a "smugglers route" - which is when you remove as much wood as possible under the fretboard. I also had him cut a big chunk of wood out of it via a deep belly carve. I've got a G&L Fullerton Deluxe ASAT Classic. They come with the belly-cut and I'm hooked on it, though I'm in no hurry to carve into my other Tele. The G&L is in a wholly different league than any Fender I've touched, though G&Ls ARE Fenders, presumably Leo's best work (his words). So the weight relief helped a little, just not as much as I'd hoped. 2. I thought the phoney aged plastic mirror looked cheap, so I swapped it for a genuine Fender chrome one that's not as thick and what's cool is that it's the same thickness as the control plate as opposed to the thicker plastic one. It adds a much higher level of quality look to the guitar IMO. 3. I think just about everyone agrees on the 'out of phase'. I wanted it gone the day I got it. Simple to mod it back to normal. 4. Pickups are decent. If I can drop at least another 1/2 lb off it (don't care what the back looks like, so more scooping to come) and I'm happy with the weight, I'll swap out the bridge pickup for something more to my preference, or maybe just sell the set of pickups and replace both and go for a more true vintage bell-like tone. 5. Unhappy accident: Who's stupid enough to hang a Tele on a guitar hanger? There's nothing to grab onto on the right side, and when the wall is directly behind a wall of amps? Even dumber! It fell straight down about 4' behind my half-stack, so I came in to find it just resting, upright, on the hardwood floor. No cosmetic damage. But with each passing day, the skunk stripe kept sinking into the truss rod channel. That's what prompted me to take it to my Luthier. Bad news that I shouldn't even share, but I can't not. It's barely a piece of wood. He couldn't believe it. It was about as thick as a credit card. THAT is one of the ways they cut costs of MIM pieces. They would never do that with an MIA Tele. It was quite a job for my Luthier to perfectly cut a piece of rosewood to fit (fill) the channel, and the truss rod will NEVER strip out over time from adjustments whereas the stock one would. Just sayin'... So naturally he had to sand the back of the neck once he glued the new rosewood in - which sanded off the tint, but he did a great job of sanding in such a way as to mimic natural wear. As we know (should know), the Road-Worn necks are finished in nitro, so he just used a light coat of gun oil, so like my EBMMs, it will begin to stain over time from my hand oils and everyday dirt. Well dang, that got long.
Fender copied everything about the guitar including it being out of phase according to J he never tried playing both pickups at once also the finish is actually a gretsch drum finish from the 1970's, he got somone who ran a bike garage to put it on.
you don't get a truss rod tool with fender guitars. i also recommend a real truss rod tool (ie stew mac) as opposed to a large slot screwdriver or phillips. a phillips is worse imo.

It's no "baseball bat"!

SPARKLES THO
I used to think the road worn idea was a dumb gimmick when they were first announced but D A N G if they’re not SO comfortablw

Best advice. Bring to a luthier. I forgot what I did 😂
Turn one of the pickups around.

Would you recommend rewiring it so that the middle position is in phase?
Yes

Wrong, not baseball bat neck. Its rounded C. Baseball is the Baja Tele.

Jumbo frets?
Chunky worn neck?
Sparkle blue?
Oh my GHUBBHHHHHH😍😍😍
