- This is a quick video I threw together to show how I do detail work in my foam armor.
All you need is EVA foam, A razor knife, and a heat gun. The process is pretty simple and gives pretty cool results.
If you have any questions or want to see more subscribe here or contact me on Facebook at GriffinCosplay or on Twitter and Instagram @GriffinCosplay
wow! the way it changes after you use the heat gun! It's like magic!
SakuraAbyss it almost feels that way watching it happen. It is a cool process.
I watch this video AT LEAST once a year for inspiration. It never fails to inspire!!
Wow! That is high praise! Thank you!
rn im making one for my brother a tanjiro sword from demob slayer i need the guard, hes so happpyyy
Ive done some really awesome coral etching on my Ursula pauldrons like that but your scales just look so clean i love it! Makes me want to start working on my Ursula Armor again.
thanks! I work in a job that requires a very steady hand. that really helped with my scales.
Wow, this is fantastic! Thank you so much for this! Keep up the great work!
Thank you!
Thank you! I've been trying to find a time tutorial to make Wonder Woman armor but couldn't find what I was looking. here it is! thanks so much!
+Melissa Neufer Thank you for commenting! I am really glad to hear that my video is of some help. I am always thrilled to hear that I was able to help someone!
Thanks for the free tip. Other cosplayers are monetizing the genre and will suggest you buy their book for tips like this.
+Matthew Livingston Nah I am not interested in trying to sell books and things like that. I do this for fun and if I learn something I want to share it.
+Griffin Cosplay And if the videos get enough views you make a little on the side as well and everyone wins.
That's a very nice thing for you to do, show us how to do it for free and not promote a book. You're a cool guy!
What's wrong about advertising your books? People put a lot ! of time and effort in doing good cosplay tutorials. Advertising a product that actually fits to the video topic is not only a good tip but a necessary way to pay the bills of the cosplay youtuber. Would you be willing to work for free, even if you like the work? I guess no, because rent isn't going to pay itself! Shaming people who kindly show you a book they written, while giving away free knowledge about their own years of experience is really ignorant.
awesome !!!! THANKS FOR AN AWESOME TIP, NO DOUBT THIS WILL LEAD TO CREATE MILLION OTHERS... Iam a fashion designer looking to incorporate new materials to my stuff....this is BEYOND AWESOME.
Thank you very much! I'm always happy to hear that someone found use our liked my videos!
this is awesome! I'm planning to do Obara Sand and this technique should be what I need to achieve her armadillo looking armor. Thank you
Absolutely! I'm glad this could help!
Awesome tips and tutorial. Many thanks for the video.
I just bought a wood burner but it's too much for my designs. Luckily I tested it out and saw those results and even better, I found this video! Thanks!!
By "expanding" he means "contracting" as the foam bubbles are collapsed and melted. But looks great!
+limbodog Yeah I misspoke. I was thinking about the cuts I had made opening up and "expanding". I didn't even catch it. Thanks for the correction :)
+Griffin Cosplay screw all that, this was a very impressive vid. I am going to do my Sorin Markov armor soon and i have reached a point where i thought i could not receive anymore tips. You just gave me a new one. :D Thanks man..
+Michael Maddox Oh wow man. that is very high praise. thank you so much. you just made my day!
This is awesome. I was thinking about making Aquaman armor and this technique will really help me out. Thanks
Awesome! I'm really glad that I could help!
sir.....you just got yourself a new subscriber!
Awesome! Thank you! I plan on doing now tutorial videos soon!
This is very helpful, because i was trying to use a dermal and make the scales on my armor. (it didn't go so well) This is much easier and it looks great! Thank you for posting this it really helped me out.
I'm very happy to hear that my video was able to help! Thanks for letting me know!
Interesting technique, I've never seen that before. Thanks :) And that's some very neat and precise cutting there. Good job.
Thank you very much!
I was just trying to sort out how I'd get a scale pattern on my weapon piece, I think this'll do great! Thanks!
awesome! I really hope my video helped!
If you want to make DRAGON SCALES make the scales as "V"'s instead of round like fish scales
Makes so much sense.. Thanks for sharing.. Subscribed and belled!! Looking forward to past and future videos!!
wow, awesome, now i know how to make my deathstroke armor, thanks for the tips.
Great video! I was looking for ways to make a textured grip for a cosplay sword (using the very sort of pattern shown in the video), and I think this is the perfect solution.
Awesome! I'm glad I could help!
Very cool tutorial.
Thank you!
When you are cutting foam you cut towards yourself, you get straighter lines.
You don't cut towards yourself when doing anything else.
Thanks for this tip... I worked in Supply for a bit... And were drilled... Cut away... Now maybe my lines will come out better🤣🤣🤣
thanks to you for give us a cool way for textures (sorry bad english) Btw thank you a lot
You are very welcome! (and your English was fine! )
This was amazing! What a great idea. Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you! I plan to do more of these videos soon!
wow that is such a great technique!! love it! :D
+Choua Thao Thanks!
just for pedantry. when you heat the foam, it's not expanding - the cuts are actually contracting at the edges due to the heat. As you know, if you kept the heat gun on it too long the foam would begin to melt. Apart from that, great tip. Look forward to more.
yeah i misspoke that was my mistake. thanks for correcting me though I do appreciate it.
great tips, this really inspires me to try to make my own piece instead of paying a commissioner
Do it! i have commissioned a lot myself but nothing matches the sense of pride you get when you make something your self.
That's a great tip!
Good video. I could clearly see what you were doing and it was long enough for the content. I did cringe a bit when you used your heat gun on your cutting mat but your knife work seemed controlled and safe even though you commented on it for people not to copy your technique. Overall good demo. Thanks.
Yeah I kinda spaced on moving the cutting board. I usually do but I was too concerned with making the video so I didn't even think about it lol. Thank you for the kind words!
THIS is amazing! Thank you so much this has helped me a tremendous amount!
Thank you so much for saying so! I'm really happy to hear I could help!
The foam is actually contracting not expanding. As it contracts it separates the lines from the foam delineating it. If it expanded it would fill up the lines you just cut. Great informative video
yeah that was my mistake. I wasn't thinking when i recorded this and learned that later. whoops lol
I guess you could say the gap was expanding. Regardless great tip man I'll consider using it on my armor build.
+Sam the Pony Man thanks. I appreciate the feedback. if you do end up using it I hope this helped.
That is damn awesome.
Thank you!
Neat technique thanks for sharing it.
no problem! thanks for commenting!
So cool!
Wish I was as talented in the cosplay field as you!!
+Lynxcat1 Oh no man. Anyone can do what I do. It just takes some practice!
+Griffin Cosplay what a nice words XD
+Angel Garcia I'm just being honest :)
+Griffin Cosplay you got a new subs
+Angel Garcia thank you so much!
Awesome! Thank you so much for the vid!
absolutely! I hope to have more up soon!
this is pretty cool.
Great info!!
Wow, that is brilliant :)
+DangerTeenager Thanks!
AWESOME TIP THANKS 👍👍
No problem! I hope it helps!
Holy shit, that's amazing.
it's like magic! lol
FYI .. those scored lines on the blade are to snap the end off revealing fresh blade tip .... (wear eye protection)
Haha, was watching this and my gf came in just as you started to use the heat gun.... said she just pee'd herself from amazement!!
lol! well I apologize for the bladder malfunction but I'm. glad you two liked it!
This is INCREDIBLE! After watching your video I used your technique on my chest armor. I'm planning on sealing my foam with plasti dip next, before I paint, but I'm wondering from you if the plasti dip is too thick and might seal up all of the pretty lines I just made with my razor knife! Is this true? How did you seal your foam so that it didn't fill up the lines?
Typically I seal my foam with Modge Podge first. I well do 8 very thin layers being very careful not to fill in the lines. Modge podge can also be sanded to keep everything smooth. After modge podge i use plasti dip. I think that it would be fine if you do start seeing the lines fill in you can use a toothpick to clean them out while it is still wet. I have used plasti dip on some pretty thin lines and it came out fine. I hope that this helps!
I am thinking of making the Gipsy Danger drivesuit. The finish of the suit is really smooth but would I be able to achieve that with EVA foam? Cool vid.
Absolutely! its all about how you seal it. to make it look like metal id recommend using Rosco's Flexbond then sand it and then use plasti dip. that will give it a hard shell. then using an automotive primer and metallic paints should give it the finish you are looking for.
thanks for the tip!!!
This is so helpful!!! Question: If someone were to put worbla over top, would it keep the general pattern?
I have not tried it. However I imagine it would if you used a tool to push the worbla into the cuts. Alternatively you could use something like frog juice to seal the foam and give it a hard finish instead of coating with worbla.
Do you think that you could maybe make a template for a chest/abdomen piece similar to this?
nice one bro thats epic man wish i could find some one to help me with my predator armor hhahhaha to many want money for free advise man , cant even find a template ether
Hey! How do you seal armors like that so the sealer is not getting into those details?
Thanks, that was a great video! 💙💙
Several questions, what kind of foam is that? Do you have a basic templet for front body armor? And this video was informative, Thank You
the foam is EVA foam. I get anti fatigue floor mats from the hardware store.
as far as templates go i freehabd my designs however I am looking into making a template because i have had quite a few requests.
This seems like a really good way to do detailing, but if I use pins to pin down my pattern to my armor- will the holes from the pins expand and show up and mess up my piece?
I have not tried pinning however I believe that it could cause the pin hole to dimple. I would try it on a small piece of scrap foam first.
Remember kids, ALWAYS cut toward yourself! just messing around, cool vid thanks.
+Repoman Lol hey! I never said it was safe ;). But seriously kids always cut away from yourself I am a terrible example. lol.
This kinda reminds me of the batfleck armor how its textured.... Is that just me or what I meant it as a complement .
Ha ha I can totally see that.
it looks great but i cant find any other of your videos
Badass
genius!
Thanks!
awesome! what is the foam that you are using?
Do you possibly have a template for this? I'd really like to make it in time for New York Comic Con 2016. If not, do you at least have some measurements that I can use to replicate this? Great job, by the way. I was thinking of using the chest design as part of a Deathstroke cosplay.
+Awais Shaukat I actually do not have a template. I never finished this build but I will try to hunt down the pieces and get some measurements for you.
+Griffin Cosplay Thank you! Really appreciate it.
Griffin Cosplay i would like a copy as well
i had two questions about doing armor with EVA foam. Im really new to it and i was wondering if by using a heat gun could you bend rounded diamond shape into like a quarter of a sphere or would you need to cut and glue part of it to get that shape, also if i were to do a piece that wrapped all the way around my arm would i want to use a wire frame on the inside.
Thank you for your time, very nice video, subbed.
Hey! Thanks for watching the video. I'm going to be doing a video on how i made my round shoulder pieces here soon. Basically i use 3 pieces of foam and use contact cement to glue them in place. If you email me on Facebook at facebook.com/griffincosplay id be glad to go into detail on how I do it.
alright thank you
What do you use to seal your pieces? Would plasti-dip + paint obscure detailed linework like this?
HO NIIIICE !
Great video but the foam DOES NOT EXPAND with the heat, the foam retracts/shrinks... YOUR CUTS EXPAND
Another point I must make on PATTERNS, when you put the pattern on the TOP of your foam you have essentially shrunk your project by the thickness of the foam.
Nice !!! How do you make sharp or straight edge or corner bends in the foam ??? Thanks in advance :)
For the straight lines i use a yard stick to draw them on. As for the curves i usually freehand those.
ok. but if I needed to do , say a 45 degree bend on a piece of armor and it had to run the length of about 6 -8 inches what would you suggest ?
Thanks for your responses btw, Your armor looks great ! :)
That is tricky. What i do is cut the foam at an angle on both sides and then glue the 2 pieces together. Getting the exact angle right is rough. There are some angle cutting tools specifically for foam that help a lot. I'll try to find a link to them for you.
Also thanks!

This is the kit that I have. It works great. You will need a lot of razors or a good sharpener because EVA foam will dull the blades really fast.
awesome armour tip thank you bro may I ask what temperature is your heat gun on..
Mine only has low and high lol. I set it to high but be I have to be careful not to burn the foam
I don't really have a professional work tools or area to do, could a Hair Dryer work in replacement of the heat gun?
Gaylord Slapyousilly sadly no. A hair dryer does not get hot enough to activate the foam. The heat gun I use was a really cheap one from harborfreight.com
Hi, I'm a first time cosplayer and I'm making the Ruin specialist class Hero gear from Black ops 3, do you have any quick tips on how I can make the details really pop out in worbla? And can I use thin foam to decorate on top of the worbla plates without having to cover it with worbla on top again?
I have actually never built with Worbla I strictly work with foam. however if you have a Facebook page send me a message on my public page facebook.com/griffincosplay and I can point you to someone who could answer your worbla questions better than I could. :)
Would a hair dryer on high be a good replacement for a heat gun?
honestly I have not tried using a hair dryer so I cannot say for sure. however I do not think that a hair dryer would get hot enough.
Can you use a hairdryer in replacement for a heat gun ?
Miku Morinozuka depends on how hot the blow dryer gets
Just to clarify, should you wait to touch the foam after using a heat gun, or is it safe to mold it immediately?
it is going to be hot so be careful but you do need to form it before it cools
hello I would like to know where I could find this design to reproduce the costume
would a hair blow dryer work?
Hey doode! Awesome video! One question.. Where do you get your EVA? I ordered some from Amazon but I wanted to try other ones.
I get all of mine from Harbor Freight. They put it on sale all the time!
Griffin Cosplay Sweet! Thanks doode!
What mat are you using? I bought a smaller cutting mat once and heat warped it to no return. Where did you get yours?
+Kris Coley Wow sorry for such a late reply I didnt get a notification on your comment. The cutting mat I bought was a super cheap one from a craft store. It is a medium sized mat but I honestly cant remember the brand. I do apologize. Next time I make a trip to the store I will see if I can find it so that I can relay the info back to you.
what type of foam do you use
EVA foam or workout mats (the ones you put weights on) you can get them from walmart
How do you cut so accurately
I use a ruler to make the pattern and very carefully make my cuts. I had to practice keeping my hand steady.
hi you are amusing man very skiled keep going I'm interested in manga and armors lately but I don't have enagh knowleg I'm still learning and trying things and the reselt auful of cours but i wont stop hhhhhhhhh hop i will get beter soon can you tell me what that brown think you was cutting this is the first time I saw some thing soled tern to some thing flexible by heating it amusing .watting for answer
can you use a hair driyer instead of a heat gun
+Muhammad Hassan I do not believe that a hair dryer will get hot enough to get the same result. However I have not attempted to use one so I cannot be sure. Sorry.
Do you jave a template for the armor used in the video?
so it will have the same effect on larger sections as well? i'm making my first armor set and i was looking for a way to cut in my hexagon like pattern into my foam
yes it will. i have used it for large sections.
Awesome thanks
do you possibly have a template for this armor
do you sell that same style armor chest?
What is the thickness our your Eva foam?
What kind of heat gun should I be looking to buy?
dual setting heat gun
$15 Harbor Freight
$24 Walmart
Would a hairdryer be an okay alternative to use instead of the thing you used?
I do not believe that a hair dryer will get hot enough to activate the foam sadly.
I expected the heat gun to be alot more expensive than it is, I'll be getting one to use for sure haha
+Mystical Space Potato they can get excitement but I use a cheapo $20 one and it gets the job done.
Should i keep an eye on wattage and volts or will any one do?
Any heat gun should do. The cheap one I use works great.
Red hood armor?
Do you have a template for the whole thing you had at the beginning?? I'm trying to make a "Bible Man" costume for a church even, just a little something for the kids to see and have fun with... but i wanted to do my best at it, is there anyway you can get me a template...or direct me in the way of finding a good one? thanks in advance.
i didnt make templates for this unfortunately. i freehand a lot of things (which is a terrible idea lol). but check out therpf.com you may be able to find someone on there who could help.
+Griffin Cosplay okay Thanks for getting back to me, i think im gonna try to make my own template based off of your design and well see how it goes
+Dalton Barrett Awesome! Good luck. let me know how it goes!
Can you use a hair dryer instead?
i do not believe a hair dryer will get hot enough to activate the foam. although I have never tried it so I can't be sure.
Is that foam flat on both sides? If so, where do you get that?!? :D
this foam is textured on one side. however tntcosplaysupply.com sells foam that is flat on both sides.
Hey Man, lov ur vid, but i need ur help. I am from hungary, and i cant buy EVA Foam here. Where can i buy? Thanks :D
you could try this place but i do not know their shipping regions.
www.tntcosplaysupply.com/products.html
Que material es ese ?
If we dont have a heat gun, can we use a blow drier instead?
Anthony Cannon I used my stove top and held the foam over a flame but you gotta be really careful to not injure your self or burn the foam
if you use a blow dryer it depends on how hot it gets
Where do you get the Eva foam
i buy mine from Harbor Freight. You can find it at most hardware stores it will be called Anti Fatigue Mats.
looks like armour for the shocker
i thought that myself. i may make it again and use it for that.
+Griffin Cosplay that would be epic!
Bitchin' video man, love your work.
thanks so much!
Griffin Cosplay Just givin' cred where it's due bro.
+Griffin Cosplay Where do you get this kind of EVA foam?
20125150 i buy mine from Harbor Freight.
Griffin Cosplay
This is their "Anti-Fatigue" mat?
hey man, would you be opposed to sharing the templates?
Do u have a template for that armor design?
i do not. I freehand the design. sorry.
what kind of foam do you use? how would you apply on a unitard?
It's called EVA foam, you can get it a Sears
You have a template for this design ?
+Brian Villalobos sorry it took so long to respond. I do not have a template. I freehanded this design. Sorry.
I was wondering where you purchase the foam you use/what brand you use?
I buy all of my foam from Harbor Freight. They sell both the puzzle piece looking pieces and the roll. I personally prefer the roll. It is a little thinner. If you go to Harborfreight.com just search for anti fatigue mat.
Thank You!! :] Also when you cement your foams together what do you use? Not to seal it but to hold it all together? I've seen Barge be used a lot but I am unable to get that unless I shop online which I prefer not to do. Any Suggestions? :]
+Ashleyy Powenski I use Woodweld. it's not as good as barge but you can buy it at any hardware store.
Okayy that is what I was looking at buying in place of the barge. Perhaps I will just risk the online shopping >< I want the best for the Gal i am doing it for. As well as I need to cement it to a PVC suit with body netting over it. So I don't wanna risk it falling apart mid day.
Thank You so Much for Your help!!!
+Ashleyy Powenski absolutely! I'm happy I could help!
Where can i get the template for this armor?
I'm sorry there is no template. i dreehand my designs.
will a hair dryer suffice
I do not believe that a hair dryer will get hot enough. however I have not attempted it so i cannot be sure.
thank you
