  • This is a quick video I threw together to show how I do detail work in my foam armor.
    All you need is EVA foam, A razor knife, and a heat gun. The process is pretty simple and gives pretty cool results.

      What's wrong about advertising your books? People put a lot ! of time and effort in doing good cosplay tutorials. Advertising a product that actually fits to the video topic is not only a good tip but a necessary way to pay the bills of the cosplay youtuber. Would you be willing to work for free, even if you like the work? I guess no, because rent isn't going to pay itself! Shaming people who kindly show you a book they written, while giving away free knowledge about their own years of experience is really ignorant.

    When you are cutting foam you cut towards yourself, you get straighter lines.

    just for pedantry. when you heat the foam, it's not expanding - the cuts are actually contracting at the edges due to the heat. As you know, if you kept the heat gun on it too long the foam would begin to melt. Apart from that, great tip. Look forward to more.

    The foam is actually contracting not expanding. As it contracts it separates the lines from the foam delineating it. If it expanded it would fill up the lines you just cut. Great informative video

    This is INCREDIBLE! After watching your video I used your technique on my chest armor. I'm planning on sealing my foam with plasti dip next, before I paint, but I'm wondering from you if the plasti dip is too thick and might seal up all of the pretty lines I just made with my razor knife! Is this true? How did you seal your foam so that it didn't fill up the lines?

    • @GriffinCosplay
      @GriffinCosplay  9 років тому

      Typically I seal my foam with Modge Podge first. I well do 8 very thin layers being very careful not to fill in the lines. Modge podge can also be sanded to keep everything smooth. After modge podge i use plasti dip. I think that it would be fine if you do start seeing the lines fill in you can use a toothpick to clean them out while it is still wet. I have used plasti dip on some pretty thin lines and it came out fine. I hope that this helps!

    I am thinking of making the Gipsy Danger drivesuit. The finish of the suit is really smooth but would I be able to achieve that with EVA foam? Cool vid.

    • @GriffinCosplay
      @GriffinCosplay  9 років тому

      Absolutely! its all about how you seal it. to make it look like metal id recommend using Rosco's Flexbond then sand it and then use plasti dip. that will give it a hard shell. then using an automotive primer and metallic paints should give it the finish you are looking for.

    • @GriffinCosplay
      @GriffinCosplay  8 років тому

      I have not tried it. However I imagine it would if you used a tool to push the worbla into the cuts. Alternatively you could use something like frog juice to seal the foam and give it a hard finish instead of coating with worbla.

    • @GriffinCosplay

      I have not tried pinning however I believe that it could cause the pin hole to dimple. I would try it on a small piece of scrap foam first.

    i had two questions about doing armor with EVA foam. Im really new to it and i was wondering if by using a heat gun could you bend rounded diamond shape into like a quarter of a sphere or would you need to cut and glue part of it to get that shape, also if i were to do a piece that wrapped all the way around my arm would i want to use a wire frame on the inside.
    Thank you for your time, very nice video, subbed.

    Great video but the foam DOES NOT EXPAND with the heat, the foam retracts/shrinks... YOUR CUTS EXPAND
    Another point I must make on PATTERNS, when you put the pattern on the TOP of your foam you have essentially shrunk your project by the thickness of the foam.

    • @GriffinCosplay

      @kproductions9963 9 років тому

      ok. but if I needed to do , say a 45 degree bend on a piece of armor and it had to run the length of about 6 -8 inches what would you suggest ?

    • @GriffinCosplay

      That is tricky. What i do is cut the foam at an angle on both sides and then glue the 2 pieces together. Getting the exact angle right is rough. There are some angle cutting tools specifically for foam that help a lot. I'll try to find a link to them for you.
      Also thanks!

    I was wondering where you purchase the foam you use/what brand you use?

    • @GriffinCosplay
      @GriffinCosplay  8 років тому

      I buy all of my foam from Harbor Freight. They sell both the puzzle piece looking pieces and the roll. I personally prefer the roll. It is a little thinner. If you go to Harborfreight.com just search for anti fatigue mat.

    • @xiiyahhohne1368
      @xiiyahhohne1368 8 років тому

      Thank You!! :] Also when you cement your foams together what do you use? Not to seal it but to hold it all together? I've seen Barge be used a lot but I am unable to get that unless I shop online which I prefer not to do. Any Suggestions? :]

    • @GriffinCosplay
      @GriffinCosplay  8 років тому

      +Ashleyy Powenski I use Woodweld. it's not as good as barge but you can buy it at any hardware store.

    • @xiiyahhohne1368
      @xiiyahhohne1368 8 років тому

      Okayy that is what I was looking at buying in place of the barge. Perhaps I will just risk the online shopping >< I want the best for the Gal i am doing it for. As well as I need to cement it to a PVC suit with body netting over it. So I don't wanna risk it falling apart mid day.
      Thank You so Much for Your help!!!
