I've had a lot of trouble working with that first foam you used (the really soft one). I bought like 4 different knives, and even tried a surgical knife and I still couldn't cut it well. This video helped me so much! Thanks :)
So, these "tips" go far beyond cosplay, these are helpful in engineering foam solutions, shoe manufacturing, toys, building products, other consumer products so on. This is huge, because this has a tremendous amount of knowledge in a short 5 minute video. Like seriously... engineers and manufacturing facilities would pay good money to learn this stuff. THANK YOU!!!
Where have you been all my life? All my casual research on foam armor always made it feel like rocket science. Thank you for a very comprehensive jumping off point ❤❤❤
thank you SO much for these tips!! I am still intimidated by foam for some odd reason even though I've seen a ton of tutorials about using it and have used it in the past! hope to make some really cool armor one day that looks as clean as the work you guys do!
I was intimidated too! I just started a project to make Link's Hylian shield. Rather than start with a large project/full kit, I realized making a cool prop would be a good start. I'm making mistakes, but foam is actually pretty accommodating...and...the best part: I'm learning. 😊
This is such a great starting point for beginners in EVA! I make costumes for a living and do a ton of leatherwork, but EVA is sooo new and foreign to me. Thank you so much! *smashes the subscribe button & rings the bell*
I have been using EVA for custom shelving in my cube organizers. One tip I can offer if you mess up a cut and end up with jagged lines or angles on your edges is to use a combination of soft sanding brushes (not the drum sanders!) and rubber or wool polishing tips with a Dremel at 15000rpm. The sanding brush will cleanly sand the edge with much better precision than the drum sanders since it's a mesh fiber. And the rubber polishing tip will friction melt large abnormalities, while the wool polishing tip will friction melt smaller ones. This takes a few seconds, but it allows you to fix messed up cuts and conserve materials.
I must thank you for this tutorial, even though being very informative it is also very helpful for someone who is unexpirienced in this area, once again thank you and my apolagies for any words that have been wrongfully spelled.
This is the first video I am watching before freshly joining the cosplay community, already learned so much and I bet I'll come back to this channel for more!
Thank you ! I discovered your Instagram cosplay page by a friend and your ycosplays are amazing ! I was really impressed by your Armored Peach cosplay and it's extremely sweet and nice to know that you are ready to help beginners in the domain with foam ! Thank you !!
Excellent video! I've been wanting to get into this for a while, and never knew where to start. This gives me more confidence to get out there and try it!
1:10 I thought this was going to be the dull cut at first. A little tip I can provide here is when starting the cut don't just drag it through like it's shown here. You're damaging the beginning of the cut. Instead saw into the very edge to get it started then pull it through.
It is really helpful, thank you for your tips, I Never worked with foam but I have a bigger project to do to the next year it your tips will save so Mutch time from mistakes I will not do
This is my first year of trying to make a costume for cosplaying and in making more of a samuria outfit and this video helps alot with the katana video thank you so much!
thank you so so much I've been dying trying to find a way to make Madara's gunbai fan and I never knew there are different firmness levels of EVA foam or even what to use as a glue
A great video with amazing tips! Watching the foam turn into sculpted armor was like magic. 😎 I'm just entering into foam work, and this was very helpful, thank you!
Should I even use foam for the head piece because I need to see through it and also put in a voice changer to change my voice would the voice changer be a separate piece or what
Cool, thanks. I’m looking to make a Viking battle axe and you helped me out with figuring out where to start. I got myself an Axe handle from Home Depot, how would I be able to make sure the EVA sticks? I’m a complete newbie to this stuff and this would be the first thing I’m actually gonna make something properly. My last project was a shield made out of a Garbage can lid
Thank you! Amazing video. I've learned tons of these tricks from reading/watching your stuff. This is great refresher 🤩 you always inspire me to craft, you and Kamuicosplay got me to finally start after years of thinking I wasn't capable. Thank you!!
Thanks for these tips, I'm working with very thin foam and need to harden it slightly, would a heat gun do the job? Or should I stick to layering it with pva and modge podge?
I have a question. I’ve been trying to look for the stuff at every store. Where do you buy this? Please tell me I need it like immediately not immediately, but I really really need it.
wait.. since when is Gesso flexible??? I used to use it on worbla and it would crack under a bit of pressure. is there a different type of gesso that flexes?
it is a good video for the beginner of making their cosplay that like me, but I confused by how to print the EVA foam and what is the best ways to print the colour?
Im about to start a costume and I like the patterns you sell, but Im from Spain and I cant find a place where they sell that type of foam. Could you tell me where you buy so I can start with my costume, please?
You can use acrylic paint and mix in a bit of flexible primer like flexbond or hexflex, you can also mix fabric medium into the paint to keep if flexible :3 if you want to you can also invest in a cheap airbrush and compressor. They are fantastic for painting too if you plan on doing it a lot!
Hi Taylor! I really admire your work! I wanted to ask you, I primed Eva foam with glue and painted it and didn't like the result. Now I bought a heatgun and plastidip to make the results better BUT I don't know how to smooth the surface that was already primed. I don't wanna waste all the work I did cutting and gluing. Can I sand it? Is there a way to disolve it? Will the heat gun and plastidip all over the paint cover everything again so I can paint? Thank you so much for this tutorial and your beautiful cosplays
3:18 use a stone bit for sanding and it will be much cleaner. If you need to remove a lot of material quickly, cut it off with a blade then refine it with a stone sanding bit, not a sand paper one.
I've had a lot of trouble working with that first foam you used (the really soft one). I bought like 4 different knives, and even tried a surgical knife and I still couldn't cut it well. This video helped me so much! Thanks :)
The softer the foam the harder it is to cut for sure!! We also struggle with soft foam sometimes XD i'm really glad that this helped a bit! :3
Try a hot wire

I actually never thought about using gesso to fill seams! Thats an awesome idea!
My jaw was on the floor the whole time watching this, I feel like the game just changed for me. I’m pumped!! 😤✨ Thanks, guys!! 🥰
Where have you been all my life? All my casual research on foam armor always made it feel like rocket science.
Thank you for a very comprehensive jumping off point ❤❤❤
Watching you cut the foam is very satisfying

Thanks! I was doing nearly everything wrong- a dull hobby knife, hot glue- this really helped.
I am glad I took the time to find these vids. I was about to rush into a big rookie mistake! Thank you so much, and Stay Awesome!

Could you do a tutorial on templates to make a costume in the shape of a ball? I want to make a 12", 18" & 36" half circle children's costume.
sigh... guess i need a heat gun after all....
Just use a hair dryer my guy

Hi may i know if you heat seal after you have assembled all together or heat seal before assembly? Which one is the proper way? Many thanks in advance
I have a question. I’ve been trying to look for the stuff at every store. Where do you buy this? Please tell me I need it like immediately not immediately, but I really really need it.
which one would you recommend for Bag stiffeners/inserts ?
wait.. since when is Gesso flexible??? I used to use it on worbla and it would crack under a bit of pressure. is there a different type of gesso that flexes?
Can i use a hairdryer instead of heat gun?
Very helpful
I am amazed with this! :O
I really liked your video
What adhesive do you recommend for people who are sensitive to fumes and don't have a well-ventilated workshop?
it is a good video for the beginner of making their cosplay that like me, but I confused by how to print the EVA foam and what is the best ways to print the colour?
can you recommend ways to get a nice color for EVA foam? I made a Gilgamesh Cosplay (Archer FGO) but can't seem to get the right golden color
Im about to start a costume and I like the patterns you sell, but Im from Spain and I cant find a place where they sell that type of foam. Could you tell me where you buy so I can start with my costume, please?
What glue do you use? I’ve tried everything and can’t get it to stick, used contact glue and it takes forever to bond
Thank you very much for this video. As a beginner it would be also helpful to know what can I use to paint my armor? :3
I didn't know your tip number 6!! Thank you!
How would I make colored metallic look to it I want to do a cosplay but the whole head is a bunch of different shades of yellow how would I do that
Hi Taylor! I really admire your work! I wanted to ask you, I primed Eva foam with glue and painted it and didn't like the result. Thank you so much for this tutorial and your beautiful cosplays
I've been making my own Freddy Fazbear cosplay, and this video will give us a little help! Thx!
It must be hard to make, considering that Freedy Fazbear's form is a bit gruesome.
3:18 use a stone bit for sanding and it will be much cleaner. If you need to remove a lot of material quickly, cut it off with a blade then refine it with a stone sanding bit, not a sand paper one.
Great tips, even for experienced cosplayers! Thank you! 🤗
