From my own memory, I recall thinking that, in the early 70’s, there was Zeppelin….and then there was Aerosmith. They were kinda America’s answer to all those incredible English bands. Tyler was viewed by many as a Robert Plant clone…….but that was the mold of frontman then, set by Robert Plant and Roger Daltry. His voice has stayed strong and he is now considered one of the best frontmen in rock history. Always in the top 10.

I remember them being compared to Zep a lot because they were both riff based bands. They both came up with the tastiest riffs. Try "Sweet Emotion."

Sweet Emotion for an older sound like this. To showcase how Aerosmith adjusted with the times, you could react to “Walk This Way” which was on their album Toys in the Attic from the 70’s, but was brought back as a hit in the 80’s when they featured Rap artists RUN DMC.
I enjoy both versions, but definitely love the collab. (Gotta watch it with the video 😁)

This is my and most everybody else's first ever listen of anything by Aerosmith, as your liner notes indicate that this was the first single released by the band, off their first album. I ran with a unique group of musical oriented individuals during the time ('73), and literally heard this song being played at my high schools graduation house bash, as one of my buddies 'mined' this just released gem, and played it over and over that evening. The party goers all heard Aerosmith rather emphatically that night. (lol)

This should be in in the top 10 of greatest songs, it was an epic power ballad way before there ever was such a thing. This song still gets a lot of air time on the radio. There is a version that was done with a full orchestra, that I think was done for MTV.

This song was sometimes referred to as a "Little Stairway" because of it's building structure. Aerosmith's catalog is very deep. The rumble of "Back in the Saddle", their cover of what what has become a meme "Walking in the Rain", the Zepplinish riff in "Last Child"... IMO their 70s work is the best, but I'm an old man stuck in the 70s. :) That said, I can't think of an era of Aerosmith that didn't produce good stuff.

@@marshabailey772 his tone is absolutely great. What you talking about? Judging from your examples sounds like you like clear and technical vocals. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s all subjective, and a tone like Tyler’s which is rougher around the edges conveys more emotion than perfect tone does.

    • @lstapes7
      @lstapes7 Рік тому +1

@@marshabailey772Steven Tyler’s voice is utterly unique. I believe that Steven’s voice might be a bit polarizing. In my opinion, he is unquestionably the best frontman in rock, and yes, he is a better frontman than Freddie Mercury. I know that is blasphemy to those who deify Freddie, but if someone objectively watches a wide variety of Aerosmith performances, Tyler has great audience interaction, but his performances are explosive and unpredictable. I don’t say this lightly because I can never decide if Queen or Aerosmith is my favorite band.

JUST when I happened to be half-composing in my mind a comment, and figured I'd mention something about how incredibly DRAMATIC this song is, how it builds and has little climaxes and then , finally, a great payoff or catharsis or whatever. Kid in the seat next to me was doing his best to party , but the ushers were everywhere, and he was stuck in a row with a bunch of "adults ". Not that I wouldn't have been happy to share ,but we went outside for that in the "smoking area. The authorities did hassle some "kids" ,but never even looked our way. It was much more fun in the 70s. As soon as the lights went out the lighters popped off. Lol...

It was fun watching your face when he went up into the stratosphere! He’s one of those who can effortlessly switch back and forth between falsetto and his lower register. (Or registers? It seems like I once heard that we all have three, but it’s easier and less dramatic, or even noticeable, switching between the lower two.) His falsetto is so raw and yet so beautifully controlled.
Your question about it being falsetto or a scream reminded me of a soprano opera singer I once saw being interviewed. She said basically she got paid to scream.

I went to the Aerosmith gig at Fenway Park last September. Towards the end of the show, the entire ballpark went dark as concerts often do at the end of the main show as the fans await the encore. A few minutes later the spotlights focused on Steven Tyler sitting atop the Green Monster at his white baby grand piano. He started playing the piano and singing "Dream On". Soon after Joe Perry (lead guitar) joined Steven atop the Green Monster and started wailing on his guitar while standing on the piano. I always wondered what people driving by Fenway Park on the Mass Turnpike must have thought when they passed Fenway Park that night and saw Steven Tyler and Joe Perry atop the Green Monster rockin' the house! It was their 50th anniversary show.

Hey there, Sal. I went to high school in NJ , grad in '75. My first concert was Aerosmith at MSG in NYC in 1976. I moved to CO to go to college, worked at a record store at the mall; we were the town's TicketTron location, and got comp tickets for every concert in Denver: McNichols Arena, Mile High Stadium, and Red Rocks Amphitheater. Bruce, Rush, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, The Stones, The Who, Dio, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, AC/DC, Neil Young, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Van Halen, Heart, 38 Special, ZZ Top, it was an amazing time. Of course, when you're living it you don't realize it until later when you look back. Kinda like when I was living in Seattle in the early 90's, going to bars in Pioneer Square to see bands like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Nirvana when grunge was breaking. Couldn't have known how lucky I was. I have over 500 CDs of classic rock, the stuff never gets old. I am truly happy that you found it and like it. You did my heart good today. Cheers.

I remember working nights at the VA Hospital with the radio at the Nurse's Station playing Dream On. 1975. Best music year ever in my opinion.

Give me all the Aerosmith you've got! They are the band I have seen live the most. I've lost count but if I had to guess? A dozen? 15 times? 70's/80's and 90's I was a concert junkie. Also a ticket snob so no far away seats.
    Today is Steven's 75th birthday!
First of course is Steven (demon of screaming) Tyler who does a little of everything. Mostly lead vocals
    Joe F'n Perry lead guitar
    Joey Kramer Drums
    Tom Hamilton Bass guitar
    Brad Whitford Guitar (back up)
Many people will suggest "Don't want to miss a thing" as a song to do. Meh. It's their most commercial song (done for a movie Steven's daughter Liv Tyler was in with Bruce Willis) and one most people know.
Playing them live is hit or miss as not only the drug factor (they don't call them the Toxic twins for nothing! although clean now) but also Steven has had several throat surgeries so you don't know what a live video is going to give you. That said....getting their official videos blocked is also hit or miss. 95% of their videos are pretty darn creative! (and usually a bit naughty)
Song videos I have seen others do without getting blocked: Love in an Elevator, Livin on the Edge, Janie's got a gun, Amazing, Seasons of Wither (MTV's unplugged version). Dude (looks like a lady) Just to name a few.
Not sure if these have been tried official but I would love to see someone do Pink, Eat the Rich, Jaded.
    Enough for now 😆

Yeah, Don't Want To Miss A Thing might be the huge hit, but it IS "meh", not their song and not their best work. Sweet Emotion, Walk This Way, Back In The Saddle, Love In An Elevator, Janie's Got A Gun, Dude Looks Like A Lady...that's enough to start with, anyway lol

Back in the saddle again, sweet emotion, janie's got a gun, walk this way, pink, jaded, rag doll, the list goes on & on......

I remember this one cut deep (something about the lyrics/vocal delivery and the instrumentals) when listening to it. Haunting... but also strangely uplifting-- I guess it was the impassioned "Dream on..." I loved it, and when it came on the radio I remember zoning out to it. It definitely stands the test of time...all those same feels... Thanks for the awesome reactions!! Love them! :)
