And now. The many names that Johnny called the Master Sword Link to the Past: The blade of evil's bane Ocarina of Time: The blade that gets sh*t done Wind Waker: The blade that f*cking matters Twilight Princess: The blade that tips 20% Skyward Sword:The blade that, wow... took a while to get this time Link Between Worlds: The blade that, once again, gets sh*t done Breath of the Wild: The blade that, OMG, is trying to kill me! Age of Calamity: The blade that no longer needs a recharge period.
Anybody else miffed that they're now calling it "The Sword that seals the darkness" rather than "The Sword of evil's bane"? I believe there was another description of it between Wind Waker and Breath of the Wild but I can't remember
It's been tens of thousands of years since Skyward sword and at least 11 thousand years since OoT. Things have different titles after a long time in legend.
Revali (the bird guy) is literally just Falco; a bird who is cocky, arrogant, competitive, and trying to one-up his partner at every turn. I couldn't stop blurting out Falco quotes while i was playing. "Are you gonna listen to that monkey?!"
Yes, because you can tell what kind of person someone is by one conversation (edit: Sorry, two conversations and a monologue, well technically they're all monologues) that they had with someone that they barely know and kind of resent.
I kind of understand why Link is still silent. It definitely made a few cutscenes feel awkward or clunky. But here's the thing. If Link has always been an avatar for the player, then ANY depiction that gives him too much personality would alienate some chunk of the fanbase, who doesn't imagine him to BE that way. By keeping him silent and only showcasing his most universal traits, he can still be that avatar for every player. I mean, I didn't feel any less like Gordon Freeman just because of his name, y'know?
It explains why they did it but it doesn't helps the game in any was. Miyamoto's idea of having a character who is silent and doesn't react to shit represent the player is stupid. I especially felt this way in this game having characters that were so close to Link. Revali challenges and taunts Link in the flashbacks and gets no reaction out of Link. That's not me, that's a piece of wood.
Fi: I'm sorry, Master. But I have existed as this weapon for what literally feels like what most might call "F O R E V E R" and I'm not quite the sword I used to be. So please understand if I need to take a ten minute break every now and then. Link:.................Fine...
I feel this game was the opposite of Skyward Sword. SS was linear that focused on character development and dungeons, BotW was made to be open but less on the characters and actual dungeons
I still think that the dungeons in BotW are pretty good. They're different, but I thought they were a lot of fun and had very clever puzzles. And Hyrule Castle is now one of my all-time favourite Zelda dungeons.
I feel the Divine Beasts had potential, but were so short. When I came across the first one, I thought it was gonna be like the last boss in Shadow of the Colossus , then I thought the turning mechanic would be unique to that one beast, but they all were just a different background for the shrines with wasted potential. But the Castle is still awesome though...
Yeah i feel this game would be a 10/10 for me if it had more epic moments like hyrule castle... The music and overwhelming presence of enemies is so awesome especially if you go to visit it early.
I agree but. I never played more than 8 mins of Zelda skyward sword. I mean I wanted to beat TP first which was a 9/10 game I never beat WW too sold Wii U. But Wild is better than those! To me Ocarina perfect 10. Past 9.75, this one 9.5
BlockSquad1000 Hyrule castle felt more like an actual zelda dungeon, and it only made me wish for the rest of the game to have the same type of dungeons
Worth noting that in other translations, including (I think) the original japanese, the reason he's so silent is actually closer to an anxiety thing bordering on pathological instead of him just intentionally playing strong silent type.
They explain it in Zelda's diary. I think of it as a both a sly nod to the fourth wall and the old saying "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt. It's better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than open it and remove all doubt."
Now you can have Link dress up as one...the internet took little to no time taking note of that...(sighs and scrolls through the various fan art of Gerudo Link disappointed with the internet)
7:40-7:58 I could imagine them doing something similar to Jak 2 in that regard, essentially having some event in the game that literally just BREAKS him, after trying so hard to keep up the stoic demeanour.
Just as he said.. the game may be "big" but it narrative and content is lacking. There is not much to say about this game. It is open world but the world is dull
That problem you mentioned about Link remaining a mute while everyone talks to him is the same issue I have with Samus in Metroid Prime 3. It's just so odd seeing all these characters refer to you by name and talking plot important details...while you just stand there and nod your head. Sure they react to shit but I think they're both missed opportunities for character-building.
At least it's better than Pokemon Sun and Moon's protagonist, who literally can't react and just stands there with the same smile no matter what is going on.
The thing is, I would be fine with Link not talking (and I am because I really don't think he needs to) if he just acted more like a character and emoted. He shows virtually no emotion when seeing the spirits of his dead friends, you would think he would show some sort of emotion.
”It´s not so much about the story seeing its mostly is completely optional. Rather what you decide to do with your time before you're ready„ thats deep man :P continue giving us life lessons as a guru
I have sadly yet to play this (waiting til I get a switch for the portability) but I do really love that everything in the game is about the final battle with Ganon. You can go fight him as soon as you're off the plateau (which is a great starting area that works as a microcosm of the main map so well) or you can prepare as much as you want. Beating shrines and dungeons only serves to help you in the final fight. Everything is building to that one fight
That's why I'm mentioning it lol, I played the game and thought it was good then learned most bought it for the ass and was like...what? Samus and Soul Caliber existed long before BotW and Nier and people didn't go apeshit over those asses.
To be fair, the Master Sword running out of energy is because in the past it was almost destroyed, and you ended up pulling it up without allowing it to fully repair itself.
Well, it looks like how it did in the in-game past. We don’t know how long it takes for something like that to fully repair. I think it’s just the developers didn’t want you to fully rely on it after pulling it.
I remember once I came across a dungeon that had balls in a pool of water and you're supposed to get one into the hole but the hole was inside a cage. I found out how to open the cage from the top but didn't know how to get the ball inside it. So wanna know what I did? I grabbed a ball, froze it with stasis, and kept attacking it at an angle with arrows to see if I could launch it inside. And in the end, IT FREAKING WORKED. I was so shocked, it took so many attempts, but it got the job done.
I gotta agree with you 100% about this Link's portrayal, or lack thereof. The whole supposed in-story reason for itultimately comes off more like an afterthought to sloppily fix an oversight. After years of Links becoming notably more personable and expressive in the narrative and indeed more of a character and less of a simple avatar of the player, this game's Link felt like he took a few steps ack in that regard, at least for the main story cutscenes and the like. I WILL give some of the in-game tidbits points in its defense though, where he has several expressive animations that show what I would presume is his real personality outside of his stoic knight facade from the past (ie certain idle animations) which really paint this Link in a more humorous, kinda dorky light, and I think the narrative would've benefitted showing this side of him a little more in the actual story. Another point I'll give in its defense is is dialogue choices, no doubt they're the most varied and personable pieces of dialogue you can choose for Link to say, which also helps establish something of a character for him/
18:20 “ain't no mountain high enough Ain't no valley low enough Ain't no river wide enough To keep me from getting to you” This describes botw perfectly.
7:56 Agreed 100%. Nintendo needs to once and for all drop the whole “representing the player” aspect of Link and give him a voice and a personality in the next game.
The _Back to the Future_ reference @ 19:15 is perfect. I too was shocked when all saw my overall percentage once I finished _Breath of the Wild_ for the first time.
I realise that this video (and game) is over a year old, but I implore anyone who plays this game to turn the HUD off. Getting all that stuff off the screen so it's just your heart meter is strangely satisfying and really open the game up visually. It's more immersive and I personally don't have any problem pausing to look at my map (I find the mini map useless 'cause it's so zoomed in you won't need to see the marker 'cause you'll see the thing right in front of you anyway)
+wolfmaster7 Or maybe, _just_ maybe, he actually didn't like the game? But nah, let's just call him a fanboy since he said something that YOU didn't agree with.
If you have both a PS4 and a Nintendo Switch, it just means you have two great open world games to sink your time into. It's the poor saps who can only afford one of the consoles that feels the need to bash the other game to justify their purchase.
why? he's not jirad. he gets the game done, records what he needs and there he goes, right to editing. he doesn't need to finish a game, espeically a game that can actually be done with a few hours when you aren't trying to find koroks to get a golden poo statue.
Also I think Morrowind might has a similar or the same Freedom as Breath of Wild, since I heard Morrowind actually lets you face the final boss from the start of the game. Damn, so rare to see a game that gives you true freedom instead of railroading (:
7:40 actually, there's a journal entry you can find that basically outlines that Link has selective mutism, and it's implied to be somewhat due to trauma and anxiety. It's not just him trying not to succumb to the pressures of being a hero or whatever, it's implied to be.... well, more than that. Now, would it have been better if he emoted more in other ways? Yes. Could this explanation have been better explained and implimented while still giving us a sense of who Link, the character, is as a person? Absolutely. But still, it IS just a little more than what you gave it,, and as someone who knows people with selective mutism, it's super cool to see a character acknowledged to have it.
Keegan Stormblade don’t forget about the voice for the version of Link on The Legend of Zelda TV show. Well excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me princess!
Sincerity Nature That just sounds like very lazy justification for Link (YET AGAIN) not talking or emoting in the 5th or 6th 3D Zelda game, especially when someone could easily not find that journal entry in their play through. And it's basically "tell, don't show" and it could have been something they show to the player via the flashbacks
Honestly I do want Link to talk but if they have to keep Link mute just to please 95% of the fandom have him express more emotion. He had more emotion with the great fairies than in the damn cutscenes and that is a shame considering I like the story of breath of the wild and it's characters especially with each of their diaries revealing how they are underneath the surface. Zelda's fear of being unworthy of her power, her father lamenting that she had to grow up so fast without her mom that, Mipha's childhood memories with Link, Urbossa being a surrogate mom to zelda and Revali well he is still a jerk. They really should fix that aspect for the sequel. If you are an RPG but with an established character make your character have emotion
I had a similar firesword-experience when I learned that metal armor/weapons made you a walking lightning rod, interesting how such a subtle thing can be so cool
16:35 Thank you, Johnny, for reminding me of the shield bash. Now I'm no longer afraid of the guardians and that one hit kill laser. The first time I saw one, I was on the outskirts of Hyrule Castle, trying to climb Central Tower... I had inadvertently awakened a Hinox, and then the guardian shot me... I had been deathly afraid of them ever since, until I remembered the shield bash.
Am I seeing a tough competition of this year's game of the year already? We have this, Persona 5, Horizon Zero Dawn, Nioh, Nier:Automata, Resident Evil 7, not to mention Mario Odyssey, The Last of Us 2 coming later this year.
I don't think Last of Us 2 is coming out this year knowing Naughty Dog because they show a teaser first then they release it 2-3 years after the teaser is released. Uncharted 4 is a perfect example of this. They showed the first trailer in 2013 and the game didn't come out until last year.
Crono Strife Sonic Forces doesn't look GOTY material. I'm not saying it'll be bad, but it doesn't look like it'll be astounding, despite how much Sega is trying to prove otherwise.
BoTW is a very super metroid style game for me, easy to replay due to how quick and easy it is, super fun to challenge run given it's wide variety of options, crazy cool to speedrun and rather fun to experiment how to abuse your movement mechanics in order to get to places you "shouldn't" be yet, only to discover the developers accounted for that anyway. It's like zelda's equivalent to that game.
I did all but 2 shrines before doing the Divine Beasts and those last two required you to complete the nearby DIvine Beast in order to access them. 1 was the Sand Seal Racing and the other was the Rito one that requires you to have the Rito kids singing and you using a Korok Leaf to send air through the rocks causing them to play music notes.
I know the video is a month old, but I wanted to point something out. Johnny says that, since they gave Link a definitive name, he wasn't as much a player avatar this time, so it was a good opportunity to give him a more defined character. I want to counter that by saying Link is entirely meant to be a player avatar, still. That's the entire purpose of the amnesia. You know just as much as he does. He may be called Link, but that's merely the name he went by in his past life. If I recall correctly, you never introduce yourself as "Link", other characters just recognize you or find out you're the legendary hero and call you that. Yes, Link can regain his old memories, but you see them the exact same way he sees them (minus the difference in perspective). What you make of those memories are what he makes of them. What you want to wear is what he wears. What you want to do is what he does. The game's core principle is freedom, and Link reflects that. Now, this doesn't excuse Link being pretty blank in the memories, but it's the reason he's pretty blank during the actual game.
More than a 2 year old comment, but I am going to disagree. Each Link in the franchise has been given some backstory, in this game he has one too. But in Wind Waker we don’t know a lot about him, the player cannot easily be in his shoes, yet he still is expressive. Breath of the Wild is almost the same, yet he does not react, instead he doesn’t respond and looks like his emotions were killed. WW Link may have a small line when he says “come on!” or when he meows when trying to hide, however he is his own character. He shows emotion and thoughts. In the first 5 minutes of the game when he receives the Hero’s garb, his face clearly say “I don’t want to wear this.”
If he is still meant to be the player avatar then let us rename him basscily either make him his own character and have him talk or make him a player avatar and have him be a mute
I actually really appreciate the story. I personally think the characters, mainly Zelda, are way more fleshed out and developed than almost any other game. Also the Link thing makes him feel more reliable and focused keeping himself together, because he honestly has no choice and has to man up even though he's a mere adolescent. The story is one of desperation and isolation and it nails that perfect. Even though there are towns and other inhabitants, you still feel alone in a post apocalyptic Hyrule. It's a story in which Ganon has succeeded. Meaning Link must redeem himself from failing everybody 100 years ago. It feels sad, urgent, and simply put just magical. Everybody has their own opinion, which I respect. I just thought I'd share mine about the subtle but beautifully crafted story. Thank you for reading. :)
Idk but the post apocalyptic setting really failed in conveying desperation. The world is SO BEAUTIFUL that it's hard to feel like Ganon is a threat at all. Villages are prospering, and life is mostly peaceful despite the presence of monsters and guardians. About Link's personality tho I feel like the things you commented are hardly conveyed at all and honestly sounds like an exaggeration, specially since his dialogue options reveal a much more interesting side of his character that never really gets a time to shine
A great thing about this game is that it's hard but not unfair. If you die you just reload and you can save and auto save pretty much anytime. There's no BS oh you lost ruppees or health or whatever. You're punishment for failure is that you didn't succeed and will have to try again, that's all it ever has to be and anything on top of that is just bad, outdated design
Scott Elder I agree. Its nice to have a 3D Zelda game that actually challenges you & tests your wits just like the original Zelda on the NES instead of like the previous 3D games where you basically feel overpowered throughout the entire game & never have to worry about getting a game over.
Meta Shade eh by the end of the game I felt just as OP as I did in any other Zelda game. When you have 20+ hearts and good armor, enemies only do 5 hearts or less and as long as you're prepared you can pause and eat food at any time. Or you could just make food that gives you 20 yellow hearts and whammo you're OP for a while.
I can agree The reason why Link doesn't talk is trying to make him seem too Sensitive to opinion (EMO). i would have preferred if the game explains it was an injury or birth defect of some type, seeing as we know he has parents due to one memory. but i LOVE everything else about the game, and i fangirled when i knew about the Dark Link costume
Kingdom Hearts *Remembers the needlessly complicated and stupid plotlines, how many times the series lies right to your face about previously established content, and fucking Dream Drop Distance.* HAVE FUN JOHNNY.
"how many times the series lies right to your face about previously established content" lemme guess, you are mad that Ansem from KH1 was accually xehanorts heartless and complained it was a retcon even though in the first game the 10th report says he cast off his body and plunged into darkness... or was it the "Nobodies accually having hearts" which you are right it was a lie, from Xemnas himself so he can make the rest of Org XIII believe that so he can make them Vessels but yeah judging from the bolded text, you are either a joshscorcher fanboy of somone who cant let go of the fact that the 1st game doesnt hold up anymore ps. next you are going to tell me Lucas lied to you because he didnt tell you that Leia was lukes sister right in A New Hope
1. You need to take a grammar course. 2. I'm still right, aren't I? Like, saying all this time that nobodies had no hearts but then JUST KIDDING yes they do! And then JUST KIDDING AGAIN no they don't--OH WAIT! Yes they do--just certain ones do. 3. Yes, I am a fan of joshscorcher and while I disagree with some of his opinions, he's more than entitled to them--and in some cases, his opinions hold validation. Just because you can't handle the truth doesn't mean that the truth doesn't exist--KH's timeline is an absolute mess. Also your weak Star Wars analogy fails because that is what is known as a plot twist--on the same level of Darth Vader being Luke's father. Here, in KH, it's not a plot twist--it's basically a mini retcon. No you know what? It's not even good enough in quality to be a retcon, this series asspulls -*-hard-*- . Also, me hating DDD is just my own opinion, but it's an opinion shared by many--the tamogachi system for gaining new skills was just stupid, the Drop Timer mechanic was stupid--I still don't see why they couldn't have just had one continuous timeline where the game shifts you between Sora and Riku on its own via cutscenes and the like rather than a gameplay mechanic--, and yeah, I'm with Josh on this one: I will never forgive them for Wargoyle. And buddy, when the first game in the franchise doesn't HOLD UP in the timeline, what should that tell you? Like honestly think about that for a second.
wow lot of wrong here just like scorcher, you have no no understanding of the basic plot, because when in the hell did they ever say that they didn't again (hint they said they CAN grow hearts) "Here, in KH, it's not a plot twist--it's basically a mini retcon." so one of the villains revealing hes been deliberately hiding this fact from all the other organisation members is a retcon? did you expect xemnas to reveal this fact in the middle of KH2? "And buddy, when the first game in the franchise doesn't HOLD UP in the timeline, what should that tell you? Like honestly think about that for a second." that tells me that the game was obvously made without a sequal fully written, but i dont hate games like tools of destruction or jak 2 because the plot doesn't line up with the original game
"that tells me that the game was obvously made without a sequal fully written, but i dont hate games like tools of destruction or jak 2 because the plot doesn't line up with the original game" But that's still bad, though! XD That's no excuse for poor planning
In regards to the whole Link remaining a silent protagonist thing, I get where Johnny is coming from, but I respectfully disagree. Maybe it's just because I've seen too many likable characters get ruined by suddenly having a voice, Yu Narukami, Samus, and even...well, Link. If Link did have a full on voice and personality in this game, I don't have hope that it would've been a good one. He would've probably just been a boring goody goody hero who just agrees to everything the good guys say, say the bad guys are bad, and wouldn't have brought anything special to the table. I'll take silent over boring any day of the week. Though I know for some that's six of one, half dozen of the other.
Thats not really a fair analysis. A silent character isnt necessarily ruined the moment they have a voice. Its all in how its executed. Characters like Samus were not good with their voices because it was simply a bad choice. Her voice actor was robotic and boring and the dialogue she had was nothing short of pretentious and stupid. In fusion however she had an active personality and lines that were written much better and most people generally liked it there. So why do you automatically assume he would have a boring goody two shoes personality? I can think of several ways to make the link here interesting. Maybe he feels guilty for all the years he missed, how hes working so hard yet hes still too late to save the champions. Maybe he could have a mini arc where he decides all he can do is help the people that are there right now rather than dwell on the things he wasnt able to stop. Or hell maybe he couldve just been really expressive like the wind waker link. That one had a pretty decent personality from how he reacted.
Check his dialogue trees in game(because they're VERY personalized). He's not necessarily super complex, but he's far from just a goody shoes. He's blunt, abrupt, likes puns, isn't above messing with people or manipulating them, and his language is fairly casual. There IS a lot of stuff in the game that suggests he DOES have a personality and it isn't a boring one.
Scissorman I agree with this, and i used to hate on why he can't talk but I came to respect and actually be surprised in a good way on the reason he doesn't talk is because of all the stress and anxiety he has, he will make himself and Zelda aswell as the kingdom look bad if he shows it especially since he's the chosen one of the master sword aka(the sword that gets shit done) he has to put on a poker face to hide his true devastating emotions for the sake of those he cares for, which is a rather interesting take on his character.
+Jeremiah Lee That seems like a cheap explanation to me. That WOULD be interesting if they went further into it, maybe show his poker face cracking at some point before pulling himself back together, actually have it be its own full on interpretation, but the fact hes just a constant stone faced mute makes it feel like nintendo just went "oh yeah and he doesnt talk or smile because of this whatever", (if he does show his emotions at some point in the story then nevermind that bit I dont want soilers). Plus, hes plenty emotive when he talks to people, his replies are often sassy, sarcastic, crude, even entertainingly rude at certain points, and yet we dont see any of that smarm reflected in his face or expressions. It seems like nintendo tried to have their cake and eat it at the same time by giving him sassy quips in non voiced dialogue but still keep a stone faced mute in cutscenes and story bits. Im not saying I want him to full on talk, (sounds interesting but I dont think they have to if they dont want to), but at least be a bit more expressive, its not like thats anything new what with skyward sword and wind waker. Heck those links are many peoples favourites BECAUSE of how expressive they are.
I haven't played this game and I don't know why, but 8:06 watching Zelda break down and cry is one of the most beautiful animations of sorrow that I've ever seen and it makes me want to cry.
I disagree on Zelda. I'd call her the best written character in the franchise. Her relationships with the case, struggles she goes through (both big and small,) are all handled in a very realistic manner, which makes her my favorite incarnation of Zelda by far. She's not just a damsel in distress, she's not just a close friend of Link's, she actually has a fair bit of character depth, and through all the flashbacks she actually have a fairly believable character arc. Plus it's a nice change of pace. A Zelda that isn't out of commission and offscreen for the vast majority of the game (Skyward Sword Zelda was nice, but she's barely around,) and the other iterations have even less screentime unfortunately for the most part, it was always nice to come across a flashback and learn something new about her, that she's actually kind of a geek, seeing how she *doesn't* just have the special Triforce power from the get go, and her struggles and pressures to awaken it before Calamity Ganon's return because it's her destiny. Honestly the only other Zelda I'd consider a close contender with this one in terms of character quality is Spirit Tracks (and that's because she has a lot of screentime.) I will agree it's a bit of a missed opportunity with the four champions, an extra cutscene or two with each of them would have been welcomed.
THANK YOU! Spirit Tracks may not be the best Zelda game, but ever since I first played it, it’s been one of my favorite Zelda games of all time(now tied with this game)and one of my favorite games ever, Zelda being one of the reasons. I’m also in agreement on this Zelda being very well written. Also I know it’s an old comment, but I’ve been hyper fixated on all things Zelda at the moment.
Amazing review/analysis of the game! I'm getting this once more Switch consoles are in stores. The fact they are also adding more content to this game soon is pretty neat, too.
19:33 I did feel like the food system is a little bit broken. Once you make the right stuff, which isn't too hard to find, you can pause and instantly regenerate all of your health, and it kind of got a bit too easy after that.
It's not that hard to follow until after KH2. A moment of silence for when he tries to justify Re:coded existing or explain Dream Drop's plot. And lord help him if he's going to touch the mobile game...
Love your Zelda reviews and wanted to see this to see how BOTW and loved how considerate you are towards people like me who haven't played it and even included a timestamp. Thank you and now subscribed!
The one thing Skyward Sword truly had going for it above the other games was the story. I loved Zelda, and watching Link be so expressive and watching the two interact were my favorite moments. This Zelda was dynamic, but Link was so static that it just became a missed opportunity on Nintendo's part. Anything we discovered about Link was through diaries of off hand comments, whereas I wish we'd been more involved in watching Link learn what has happened to his world and rebuild the relationships with people around him. I felt like we'd reverted back to TP's Link who barely expressed any emotions, which was disappointing for me. Story also should have more to it. I know it was hard to combine open world with plot line, but it's not impossible and the memories element was cool but not enough for me.
And now. The many names that Johnny called the Master Sword
Link to the Past: The blade of evil's bane
Ocarina of Time: The blade that gets sh*t done
Wind Waker: The blade that f*cking matters
Twilight Princess: The blade that tips 20%
Skyward Sword:The blade that, wow... took a while to get this time
Link Between Worlds: The blade that, once again, gets sh*t done
Breath of the Wild: The blade that, OMG, is trying to kill me!
Age of Calamity: The blade that no longer needs a recharge period.
Breath of the Wild: the blade that runs out of fucking energy
Anybody else miffed that they're now calling it "The Sword that seals the darkness" rather than "The Sword of evil's bane"? I believe there was another description of it between Wind Waker and Breath of the Wild but I can't remember
It's been tens of thousands of years since Skyward sword and at least 11 thousand years since OoT. Things have different titles after a long time in legend.
It's always fun seeing Johnny 's Master Sword nicknames

I spit my drink out when he said that.
Drewsefer89 that is what I enjoy about Johnny's review that I enjoy he says thing that make laugh for several minutes
Revali (the bird guy) is literally just Falco; a bird who is cocky, arrogant, competitive, and trying to one-up his partner at every turn. I couldn't stop blurting out Falco quotes while i was playing.
"Are you gonna listen to that monkey?!"
I thought exactly the same thing while playing. He is the most shallow Champion, tbh. Urbosa all the way.
5persondude interesting
Yes, because you can tell what kind of person someone is by one conversation (edit: Sorry, two conversations and a monologue, well technically they're all monologues) that they had with someone that they barely know and kind of resent.
Agreed. I was saying "day Ain't Falco" the entire time he was on screen when i met him. xD
Eh, not really. Falco is just Fox' rival, whereas Revali outright hates Link...until he frees Vah Medoh
"...its crazy, but a ton of fun when you can think outside the box. or fuck it, use the box." best line of the video.

Thank you. I find it really annoying how Johnny seems to think the whole world dislikes and don't understand silent protagoniosts as much as he does.
If it can work for Adol, it can work for Link.
Love your videos man! 👍
Then the fanbase is petty
BlockSquad1000
Hyrule castle felt more like an actual zelda dungeon, and it only made me wish for the rest of the game to have the same type of dungeons
Cmckerracher I think it's a dumb reason especially if he never learns from it and grows as a character.
Comment true
what the fuck
Cmckerracher interesting
i love that sonic 06 review reference ! ROCK LAUNCH
18:14 OMG I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thought it'd be funny to make Gerudo-Link hold 2 melons XD Took like 5 snapshots of that sillyness.
Oh, and the ending clip too. Johnny, you perv!
12:32
Great Frostblade
*Inventory is full*
Remember when people thought this Link was a girl?
So much has changed.
Now you can have Link dress up as one...the internet took little to no time taking note of that...(sighs and scrolls through the various fan art of Gerudo Link disappointed with the internet)
Mike Anthony interesting
I remember when people thought Link was Zelda.
Remember when people said you could choose to play as a female Link, then bitched about Linkle.
Trayxxxx I know right?im sick of people calling the princess zelda, it's link
Calls the game Zelda, plays as Link. 0/10
Jake G 2187 lol
Jake G 2187 yep exactly false advertising
But Ocarina of Time wasn't called Legend of Dumbfuck either.
GAME THEORY: Is Link ACTUALLY ZELDA?!?
I want Johnny to review the CD-I Zelda games.
YaBoyAlan Mah boi.
YaBoyAlan ma boi
really? they suck.
Gee. It sure is boring around here!
Reece Langsdale Mah boi! This reply is what all TRUE commenters strive for!
7:40-7:58 I could imagine them doing something similar to Jak 2 in that regard, essentially having some event in the game that literally just BREAKS him, after trying so hard to keep up the stoic demeanour.
that would actually be perfect if they wanted him to talk in the sequel
(also jak ii is awesome 👍🏻)
If Link would have talked, Breath of the Wild would be the most hated in the series. I'm sure of that.
LonelyLabsMonkey
Agreed.
Even more than the CDi games?
It will happen someday, and first people will hate it, and then warm up to it. That's how it's always been, like for example when Zelda went 3D.
OTBWY Nah, people didn't hate it when Zelda went 3D. The initial reviews were great.
"Well excuuuuuuuuuuuse me, princess!"
"See that mountain?"
Dood
MegaDeathRay10 NEVAR dood!
wot
But is there SARDINES on it?
Birb Dood!
Youre here too?
Computer-Monster YES... I AM!... *tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk*
I still don't know what birb is dood...
>when Johnny doesn't even do a 40+ minute review for even Breath of the Wild
I HURT MYSELF TODAY
57 for sonic 06. I guess that game is no joke.
Aparently he got a lot of hate for his 2 hours Sonic 06 review...I never understood why, Johnny reviews are great, the longer the better
@Jose Colella
Really?! That and his Unleashed review was what made me sub to him.
Just as he said.. the game may be "big" but it narrative and content is lacking.
There is not much to say about this game.
It is open world but the world is dull
Trevor Isaacs TO SEE IF I COULD FEEL
That Sonic 06 rock launch joke returns
Username Actually if you grab onto it in _just_ the right way, rock launches work. I haven't gotten very far with it though.
Yeah Breath of the Wild understands some things that 06 couldn't hope to do, they're called gravity and physics, the cruelest of mistresses
Tyrannosaurus Rex
And then Other M happened...
It would've been awesome to have Samus voiced by Jennifer Hale in Prime 3.
At least it's better than Pokemon Sun and Moon's protagonist, who literally can't react and just stands there with the same smile no matter what is going on.
The Sun and Moon Protagonist in a nutshell
*City is getting destroyed by meteors
*smiles
The thing is, I would be fine with Link not talking (and I am because I really don't think he needs to) if he just acted more like a character and emoted. He shows virtually no emotion when seeing the spirits of his dead friends, you would think he would show some sort of emotion.
”It´s not so much about the story seeing its mostly is completely optional. Rather what you decide to do with your time before you're ready„
thats deep man :P
continue giving us life lessons as a guru
I like how John's Twitter is more up to date in notifying a new review than UA-cam's own bell thing. Got it a minute before UA-cam let me know.
Too bad that the final fight is extremly disappointing
not *extremely*. i'd say it's about as interesting as any other final zelda boss.
Final boss is a joke if you're prepared enough. I was overpowered
Leopold Litchenstein that is true.
Leopold Litchenstein Well that's because it was up to you. You can wait until you're godlike to fight him. That's the beauty of the game.
Legend of zelda: Her damn ass
Man what's with people obsessing with game character's asses lately lol.
Axsen _ Says the guy with the picture from nier
That's why I'm mentioning it lol, I played the game and thought it was good then learned most bought it for the ass and was like...what? Samus and Soul Caliber existed long before BotW and Nier and people didn't go apeshit over those asses.
You have problems. All of you.
OMG can you fucking grow dude?
To be fair, the Master Sword running out of energy is because in the past it was almost destroyed, and you ended up pulling it up without allowing it to fully repair itself.
Well, it looks like how it did in the in-game past. We don’t know how long it takes for something like that to fully repair. I think it’s just the developers didn’t want you to fully rely on it after pulling it.
So the sword hid itself while it tried to repair itself.
RyuuSix - Right UA-camr, wrong franchise.
@@117MasterSonic But then there are other weapons that are way stronger than it.
That's still retarded considering the absolute grind you need to go through to get it
I remember once I came across a dungeon that had balls in a pool of water and you're supposed to get one into the hole but the hole was inside a cage.
Waiting for a SomecallmeJohnny video is the reason why I wake up.
16:40 "YEAH EAT IT BITCH" Pretty much everyone's reaction when they did this for the first time haha.
15:16 Isn't it nice to be able to laugh after a "meh" sort of day? Thanks, Johnny. :)
Another point I'll give in its defense is is dialogue choices, no doubt they're the most varied and personable pieces of dialogue you can choose for Link to say, which also helps establish something of a character for him/
18:20
“ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you”
This describes botw perfectly.
unless it's raining*
Lets just put it together for Johnny, this is a damn big game and he did this for us. Fuck ya John
MegaDeathRay10 it is because he has to film, write and edit the video
MegaDeathRay10 damn you can't go around comparing people to konami. That's not okay man.
All Hail Johnny!
MegaDeathRay10 Dude that's not something you can compare people too not even cancer can compare to Konami that's not right man.
***** right. We were having good decent fun. He took it too far.
7:56 Agreed 100%. Nintendo needs to once and for all drop the whole “representing the player” aspect of Link and give him a voice and a personality in the next game.
If you are gonna make his name link in game e.g not letting us rename him then have him talk and give him a character
"there's a 95% probability that you're taking a nap." Laughed too hard at that.
It's a shame Zelda and Horizon Zero Dawn had to be released days apart from one another. They're both amazing games in their own right
Ben Wasserman Horizon sucks lel
Ninten Man01 NINTENDO FANBOY ALERT, GAMER'S RUN BEFORE HE SHOUTS HIS MISINFORMED OPINIONS
Solatorobo did the same plot better and that game had furries in the goddamn sky.
Let's be honest here...Who else thought this video would have taken longer to be uploaded?
Anyone?
Guilty as charged
I didn't think this video will get uploaded till june.
but I forgot that Johnny isn't a completionist psycho like me and some others XD.
SOHGuy true
why? he's not jirad. he gets the game done, records what he needs and there he goes, right to editing. he doesn't need to finish a game, espeically a game that can actually be done with a few hours when you aren't trying to find koroks to get a golden poo statue.
Me
13:37 Where is your White Mage now Johnny!?
"Evil Laugh"
Also I think Morrowind might has a similar or the same Freedom as Breath of Wild, since I heard Morrowind actually lets you face the final boss from the start of the game.
Damn, so rare to see a game that gives you true freedom instead of railroading (:
0:36 'nothings stopping you from going where you want'
*Rain*
I had that exact fire sword "duh" moment in the ice block Shrine. Took me a good minute to realize. It's the little things, with this game.
Nah, they're just afraid that he'll end up like CD-I Link, who wouldn't shut up about blowing up Dodongo's and getting kisses from Zelda.
Robert Kovarna being a edgy teenager
@@nothanksfools How would it mean Link is being an edgy teen?
I don’t mind that Link was mute, but I really wish he was more expressive, the way he was in Wind Waker
The percentage meter doesn't count Quests, only stuff on the map like Korok Seeds and Shrines. Korok Seeds alone take up about 75% of the percentage.
"Only"
"Korok Seeds only take up about 75% of the percentage."
"Only", he says casually.
Not surprising that it takes up 75%.
After all, there's 900 of the things.
You heard me right. 900.
NINE.
HUNDRED.
Victor Olavarria ok good to know cause I thought "no fucking way is he only 14% through!" Hahah
The only Quests that it counts is the Main Quests, since the other stuff counted on it is beaten Dungeons, or just the Divine Beasts should we say.
you uploaded this the day I finally finished it. the timing could not be better
I had a similar firesword-experience when I learned that metal armor/weapons made you a walking lightning rod, interesting how such a subtle thing can be so cool
19:20 killed me!
I am very looking forward to picking this up once I get a Switch.
What a breath of fresh air!
ChoopStack, I know you'll find this.
Johnny this Kingdom Hearts marathon is probably going to be my favorite marathon and I love you for it.
( Has chores to do ) *Sees video* "Nah, they can wait"
I'm definitely looking forward to your opinion on tears of the Kingdom, when you eventually get to that game, Johnny
Am I seeing a tough competition of this year's game of the year already? We have this, Persona 5, Horizon Zero Dawn, Nioh, Nier:Automata, Resident Evil 7, not to mention Mario Odyssey, The Last of Us 2 coming later this year.
Sonic Forces,Sonic Mania
I don't think Last of Us 2 is coming out this year knowing Naughty Dog because they show a teaser first then they release it 2-3 years after the teaser is released. Uncharted 4 is a perfect example of this. They showed the first trailer in 2013 and the game didn't come out until last year.
*No Mario's Sky
Crono Strife Sonic Forces doesn't look GOTY material. I'm not saying it'll be bad, but it doesn't look like it'll be astounding, despite how much Sega is trying to prove otherwise.
Hey ya never know
BoTW is a very super metroid style game for me, easy to replay due to how quick and easy it is, super fun to challenge run given it's wide variety of options, crazy cool to speedrun and rather fun to experiment how to abuse your movement mechanics in order to get to places you "shouldn't" be yet, only to discover the developers accounted for that anyway. It's like zelda's equivalent to that game.
Man 19:29 aged like MILK 😂
Why
So glad I clicked that bell!
Johnny seems like the kinda guy you'd wanna hang out with!
Johnny really takes my breath away.
Damn 5 years already. Time is fucking flying.
Request: Johnny vs. Spyro The Dragon
About a couple of years ago I showed this video to one of my older cousins and the jokes at 13:37 and 19:27 made him laugh hysterically!
21:36
Me: JOHNNY IT'S NOT WORTH IT! SAVE YOURSELF!
I'm glad Link is referred to as Link. And I'm DAMN GLAD he doesn't talk.
And his relationship with Zelda is pretty heartwarming.
"who do you think i am, this man?" *Jirard* fuck outta here 😂😂 i roflmao
If you're implying Dark Souls is unfair or has ''outdated design'' you are wrong
Meta Shade the beginning was awesome difficulty wise, but at the end of the game it was just as easy.
Is like nintendo version of dark souls
I can agree The reason why Link doesn't talk is trying to make him seem too Sensitive to opinion (EMO). i would have preferred if the game explains it was an injury or birth defect of some type, seeing as we know he has parents due to one memory. but i LOVE everything else about the game, and i fangirled when i knew about the Dark Link costume
Johnny... You are just great, your content has evolved, but seems to have never degraded, your points fresh yet consistent, keep up the great work.
Kingdom Hearts
*Remembers the needlessly complicated and stupid plotlines, how many times the series lies right to your face about previously established content, and fucking Dream Drop Distance.*
HAVE FUN JOHNNY.
I can see the flame wars already.
"how many times the series lies right to your face about previously established content"
lemme guess, you are mad that Ansem from KH1 was accually xehanorts heartless and complained it was a retcon even though in the first game the 10th report says he cast off his body and plunged into darkness... or was it the "Nobodies accually having hearts" which you are right it was a lie, from Xemnas himself so he can make the rest of Org XIII believe that so he can make them Vessels
but yeah judging from the bolded text, you are either a joshscorcher fanboy of somone who cant let go of the fact that the 1st game doesnt hold up anymore
ps. next you are going to tell me Lucas lied to you because he didnt tell you that Leia was lukes sister right in A New Hope
Like honestly think about that for a second.
wow lot of wrong here
just like scorcher, you have no no understanding of the basic plot, because when in the hell did they ever say that they didn't again (hint they said they CAN grow hearts)
"Here, in KH, it's not a plot twist--it's basically a mini retcon." so one of the villains revealing hes been deliberately hiding this fact from all the other organisation members is a retcon? did you expect xemnas to reveal this fact in the middle of KH2?
"And buddy, when the first game in the franchise doesn't HOLD UP in the timeline, what should that tell you? Like honestly think about that for a second." that tells me that the game was obvously made without a sequal fully written, but i dont hate games like tools of destruction or jak 2 because the plot doesn't line up with the original game
"that tells me that the game was obvously made without a sequal fully written, but i dont hate games like tools of destruction or jak 2 because the plot doesn't line up with the original game"
But that's still bad, though!
I’ll have you know that the voice acting is Faces of Evil is a Master work of cinematic proportions! ... ok no not really
13:56 I'm fuckin dead
I haven't played this game and I don't know why, but 8:06 watching Zelda break down and cry is one of the most beautiful animations of sorrow that I've ever seen and it makes me want to cry.
One reason why Link doesn't talk:
"Excuuuuuse me princess"
"I wonder what ganon is up to"
I disagree on Zelda.
Honestly the only other Zelda I'd consider a close contender with this one in terms of character quality is Spirit Tracks (and that's because she has a lot of screentime.)
I will agree it's a bit of a missed opportunity with the four champions, an extra cutscene or two with each of them would have been welcomed.

I seriously could not believe this review is 6 years old. Time really flies when the world goes to shit
Amazing review/analysis of the game! I'm getting this once more Switch consoles are in stores. The fact they are also adding more content to this game soon is pretty neat, too.
The amount of places you can travel in this game is fantastic plus the calm soundtrack as I'm riding epona through hyrule. This game is amazing!
Hey i appreciate the spoiler skip johnny, don't have a nintendo console right now but eventually I'll get around to it and this.

8:56 Johnny is right. Every time I cook in this game, it makes me hungry as hell!
The Legend of Zelda: *Pro Skater*
That intro music gets you so hype before the video
19:33 I did feel like the food system is a little bit broken. Once you make the right stuff, which isn't too hard to find, you can pause and instantly regenerate all of your health, and it kind of got a bit too easy after that.
I see what you mean. It's for this reason I know you was the phase locket in Shovel Knight very often.
Damn that intro tho. Tee lopes does know how to make awesome music in any circumstance.
Legend Of Zelda Botw ~ 10/10
I guess you could say Breath of the Wild has... taken my *breath* away...

Kingdom Fucking Hearts. And people think MGS is overly complicated.
Crono down the rabbit hole we go.
Thank you for this unique and challenging insight. Where *would* we be without opinions like yours? -_-

Hoo boy, Johnny's in for a ride if he tackles these games.
It's not THAT confusing.
I love how Johnny's bringing back old jokes from older videos.
Trap Link is best Link
God damn it I cant deny I'd probably bang Gerudo Link too...if I didn't know he was a guy...which is already hard to tell with out that outfit...

7:57 four words: Well EXCUUUSE ME, PRINCESS!
Connor McLernon Weak and lazy justification.
I actually guessed your next marathon and I was laughing my ass off next marathon is going to be a long one John good luck
Ooh, goodness, a new marathon that will probably take you the REST OF THIS YEAR
