I don't think the constant comparisons to Ocarina of Time are necessarily a bad thing. Bear in mind, when this game came out, there were four 3D Zelda games. 1. the codifier for a "3D Zelda game" (Ocarina of Time) 2. a very different take on a "3D Zelda game" (Majora's Mask) 3. another very different take on a "3D Zelda game" (The Wind Waker) Then we got Twilight Princess, which I do honestly believe is "a 3D Zelda game, perfected". I think many have watched Egoraptor's Sequelitis on Ocarina of Time by now, and while he was overly nitpicky, he was still right about a lot of things. Things like those sliding pucks from around corners (which as noted, make much more sense in a town-down environment), the annoyance of trying to kill keese in 3D space, and the shoot-the-eye switch "puzzles". That's not to say Ocarina of Time is a bad game, though. Hell, it's not saying that it's anything less than a spectacular game. It's just, it's not perfect. And as time goes on, it does slowly show its age more and more. It's still timeless in many ways, but nevertheless dated in others. A lot of the things that brought Ocarina of Time down were streamlined and improved in Twilight Princess. Sliding pucks don't exist. There isn't a single eye switch in the game. And, while The Wind Waker is the one to take credit for this particular change, keese now float around within sword's length for a few moments before attacking you. Among other things like that. It's essentially what one could call "Ocarina of Time: Hindsight Edition". Something wasn't so great before? It's better here. So yeah, I don't mind that Twilight Princess isn't that different from Ocarina of Time. You want different? Try Majora's Mask. Try Wind Waker. Try Skyward Sword. Hell, try Breath of the Wild. That just came out less than two months ago. I don't mind another traditional entry, especially when said entry is good. The Zelda series as a whole is very experimental and I don't mind it taking things easy once in a while. (also, as a personal aside regarding Hyrule Field in this game, there's actually a good few mini-dungeons scattered about that are worth checking out. It's not a whole lot to do, but it's nice.)
I saw the trolling Ganon with the fishing rod joke coming and it still made me laugh. And "return of dumbass" lmao (Ganon´s freaking face at that moment) By the way, IMO, this game is second only to Majora´s Mask in weird or unsettling moments. The time Zant almost kills Midna and her shriek of agony, Link´s nightmare, the screamer at the boss of the Yeti temple, Ganon´s freaky "demonic ball of light god" form... I dunno. It´s not as nightmare inducing as Majora´s Mask (whose finale I still cannot play when I´m alone at home late at night and I´m 30) but it stil creepy as fuck sometimes.
These motha fukrs never seen The Grudge? Mine too. So when the Smash Bros Link amiibo gave me a piece of his tunic in BOTW, you can bet I was excited. And preordered the new Figma too.
9:40 I agree. Really not a fan of how Ganondorf basically hijacked the plot at the last minute. I realize it's tradition and all but it really wasn't necessary. Zant's boss fight was creative, and from we see at the end, I think he's more than capable of holding a story on his own. Nintendo should've just let him fly solo.
They learned from that with Vaati and whats-his-face from Link Between Worlds, at least. Yes I know Vaati was before this game. Just felt he fit the bill.
What people don't understand is that without Ganondorf, the plot and theme of TP for the most part doesn't work. Ganondorf is even the entire basis for Zant's development as a character. I feel Ganondorf's presence in the plot is much more important than most people give it.
I has been waiting for this for so long! Next to Majora's Mask, this is easily my favourite 3D Zelda game. An entertaining story progression, fantastic music, smooth and satisfying combat mechanics, a realistic, yet surreal Hyrule field, and the best horseback in the series, making the open world fun to travel through. The variety of dungeons just made the game so impressive since the quality never degraded once in that regard. Also at 12:02 was always something I pondered on too, Johnny, haha.
Listening to BSC over the years has made me aware (very much so...) to the constant comparisons of TP to Oot. I was fully expecting Johnny to tear into the game for this, so I was honestly shocked when he acknowledged doing so would be hypocritical, due to his love of ALBW. This, ladies and gentlemen, is how you review: you can point out the games flaws, without seeming like an asshole.
I was pleasantly surprised. I was worried he'd say it's too similar to Ocarina of Time simply because it has the most call backs. But those call backs are all very minor and inconsequential and aren't what make the game what it is which makes it far more original of an experience than the detractors would often state.
I kinda predicted 2 years ago that his opinion of TP was gonna essentially be his ''It's a bigger game'' thing he had with OoT. But even then he seems more positive about it than I expected.
I remember waiting for my pre-order of the Gamecube version. It legit drove me BONKERS, but it eventually came out just as my parents started Christmas shopping that year, and when they finally deemed me old enough to be home alone (Though I think our new neighborhood had something to do with that as well), so I have really good memories of just laying on the couch for days playing this game with my dog on my lap, him occasionally howling along with the Wolf Link songs.
This is my favorite 3D zelda game, only beaten by Okami which was a masterpiece. I enjoy the dark aesthetic more, the creepy vibe is something I miss in the zelda games.
Yeah, I think Twilight Princess captured quite well the creepy vibes of areas such as the Well or the Forest Temple in Ocarina of Time. Particularly at the final section of the game, when you enter the Twilight Realm in order to face Zant; there is just something eerie about the Twili, those gray sausage people with squeaky voices. Skyward Sword is one of the weakest Zelda games, in my opinion, because in trying to mix Twilight Princess with Wind Waker, it lost what makes both special. It lacks TP/OoT/MM's dark atmosphere, as well as WW's goofy charm.
Leonardo Santos I found TP to be extremely...awkward in "funny" moments and it wasn't as good at capturing the dark theme of MM. So personally I like SS more but it is interesting to see someone else's opinion😊
Honestly, despite all the Ocarina of Time comparisons. This game covers pretty much every base better, (especially in regards to dungeons, since OOT's were the definition of bare bones for the most part, likely to keep puzzles simple given the leap to 3D.) This includes Hyrule Field too. I didn't appreciate it as much in my first run, but when going for all the Heart Pieces in my most recent run, there's a surprising amount of goodies you can find hidden about, and between Wolf Link, Epona usually being available and warps that are actually useful for transportation (unlike OOT's warps,) transportation around never really felt TOO tedious for the most part.
For a while I was pretty sore with TP, but after my recent playthrough with the HD port, I really gained a better appreciation for the second half, even after playing BOTW (The world and shrines were great, but the dungeons are pretty meh. This games was still almost excellent to me though). If I were to rate the two halves of TP and OoT: 1st half: OoT- 7 TP-5.5 2nd half: OoT- 8 TP-9 But this is just my simple opinion.
Interesting, one of the few things I think Ocarina has over TP and frankly over most of the 3D zeldas is the dungeons. I'm of the opinion that Ocarina dungeons are better than almost all other dungeons in 3D zelda games, but that many other aspects of Ocarina are weaker than the other titles. Just my opinion though.
Zant goes from what appears to be a huge menacing threat, to a tantrum throwing brat who found super power. One hell of surprise to me. Seeing that calm evil demeanor melt away to reveal the true madman within was nice.
There were a few improvements from OOT that I think you should have mentioned, like not having to constantly bring up the menu in order to put the iron boots on and off, or the fact that Link can actually swim more freely in the lakebed temple, as well as use his sword under water.
I got the HD remastered version of Twilight Princess and loved it. Glad you liked it too Johnny. Also I do agree Zant is a better villain then Ganondorf. Same can be said for Minish Cap Vaati.
I like Ganon/Ganondorf, but I can understand he gets used alot. Zant is pretty cool, but I think Skull kid and Majora are my favorite Zelda villains. Skull kid for his tragic story and Majora for how despicable the mask is.
Twilight Princess is my favorite video game ever. But I understand your criticisms and issues. I'm glad you had fun with this one, at least. (The double Clawshots were so good that Skyward Sword threw them in just to have them. I really hope that becomes a series staple!)
"The first things that came to mind were Goat wrangling, Sumo wrestling, the werehog, midna, open world fields, SHIT loads of bloom, and ocarina of time." -Johnny 2017
I think Midna's probably my favorite "Companion" of the franchise. Though if i'm 100% honest i'm not totally sure some of her lasting popularity doesn't have something to do with a certain purple haired lady.
IIRC, I believe the challenge of talking to all the cats in the Hidden Village was only a side quest for a heart piece. The initial Moblin raid at Hidden Village was necessary for story progression.
"But why do I have to talk to all of these cats in the second visit to get to the next dungeon? There is no correlation to that whatsoever." Probably no correlation because that's just a side quest to get a piece of heart. Then again, I haven't played the HD remake so they easily could've made that worse like how Grezzo made Majora's Mask 3D's bosses worse for no reason. Also I'll defend Twilight Princess's tutorial, kind of. They made the tutorial long to accommodate the wii version since they had to get you used to the bizarre alien world of MOTION CONTROLS. Motion controls aren't exactly second nature and you kind of want to have your babby hands held, otherwise you're just swinging your wiimotes around like a drunk person at a rave party. It's also why I think the Skyward Sword tutorial was long as hell too since that was just an orgy of motion controls. Unfortunately, those who had the superior gamecube version had to endure the great slogfest as well. My main gripe with it is that you can't skip it in future playthroughs, so that's when it starts becoming shoddy game design. I believe that any game with integrated tutorials should give you an option to skip them in secondary playthroughs. It's funny since TP is the first Zelda game to have skippable cutscenes. Shame Skyward Sword didn't keep that.
I blew my load at the E3 trailer. It was so hype! I was expecting something with an involved story like OoT and an expansive open world (like Breath of the Wild). When I finally got the game, I played it nonstop for most of a week. I was let down. It was okay, but didn't keep me awake with good bits of story or particular puzzles like OoT did. And the world was a bit bigger, but had less to do in it. The final battle was amusing, but didn't have the jaw-dropping impact that Ganon had in OoT. Basically I enjoyed TP more when I stopped comparing it to OoT.
Ocarina of times story wasn't that great to me it wasn't some masterful storytelling with amazing characters it was kinda basic and reminded me alot of link to the past. What did you see in the story that was so good. I'm not attacking you just asking
Ocean Man dude, it's midnight were I live, and I was already going to sleep, but nope, Johnny posted a new video, and it is about my favorite Zelda game, so I need to freaking watch it.
I like to think that Ganondorf was distracted by the fishing rod because he secretly is a fishing rod crafter and was admiring the wonderful craftsmanship of Link's fishing rod
Probably one of my favorite runs of Twilight Princess was playing the HD re-release in Hero Mode with the Ganondorf amiibo scanned for x4 damage. Really changed up how I played the game and gave me a newfound appreciation for potions; it was a frustrating and hilarious time where a minor nick in the original could be a critical wound. Probably the only way I can play the game now to be honest.
Gotta say that I love the design for the Zora armor in this game... Actually I love that Link wears armor, even the green tunic has chain mail underneath. Plus the storybook feel...
Demi-Fiend of Time you can't compare the two botw is an open world zelda game like gta you can do anything you want tp is not an open world zelda game you have to go on specific places to progress in the game
Here's hoping the HD versions of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess get ported to the Switch, preferably as a bundle. Seriously, do you have any IDEA how LONG I've wanted to play Twilight Princess on the go? I had hoped the New 3DS would indulge me in that regard, but... no dice.
7:59 could honestly serve as the slogan for all video game villains (looking at you Dr. Neo cortex, all that brain and you can’t beat a rat in skinny jeans)
As a 3D artist, the reason that they flipped the whole game is likely due to the finicky nature of the bone systems used to animate game characters, especially at the time. Flipping the bone system would have likely broken many animations and would have likely caused the animators to need to redo everything late in development. The mirror effect is likely a filter of sorts than runs flips the in game graphics horizontally in real time (so it would basically render the frame, flip it, and display it) as a post processing effect.
Not saying that Skyward Sword isn't a good game. It just that... I don't think Johnny will find it as good as Majora's Mask. And by the way: "fedora mask"?
10:37 AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I can't!! I agree though, Illya looks bad in HD, but I still want to buy the HD version! I am replaying TP Wii version currently! Love this game!

And "return of dumbass" lmao (Ganon´s freaking face at that moment)
By the way, IMO, this game is second only to Majora´s Mask in weird or unsettling moments.
Dammit Johnny Samurai Jack starts in 6 min
DarkshadowXD63 well for me it's starts in 2 hours
Samurai Jack can wait, Johnny is more important.
DarkshadowXD63 Just set the entire series to record.
I just watch a rerun on the website later. Watching online feels better to me.

he is so badass that he replaced adult link from Oot and joined smash brawl and 4
He's so badass that he didn't get replaced by Skyward Sword Link in Smash.
These motha fukrs never seen The Grudge? Mine too. So when the Smash Bros Link amiibo gave me a piece of his tunic in BOTW, you can bet I was excited. And preordered the new Figma too.
Full version of Skulltula-Man please Johnny!

"Maybe it'll be my next Majora's Mask."
I can hear Ryan in the distance..
Johnny, with every video you consistently reestablish yourself as the BEST game reviewer/personality on youtube. You deserve millions of subs.
I now hope there's a full song of the skulltula man theme
I love how John called Wolf Link the Werehog and didn't even stop to mention it. Ah classic
This is my favorite 3D zelda game, only beaten by Okami which was a masterpiece. I enjoy the dark aesthetic more, the creepy vibe is something I miss in the zelda games.
Yeah, I love this Tolkien artstyle. I really hope Nintendo listens to fan reception and have the next Zelda use this artstyle.
Daniel Lado majora's mask? that game was dark as fuck
Daniel Lado Then you are NOT a real Zelda fan.
Honestly, despite all the Ocarina of Time comparisons. This game covers pretty much every base better, (especially in regards to dungeons, since OOT's were the definition of bare bones for the most part, likely to keep puzzles simple given the leap to 3D.)
This includes Hyrule Field too.
Agreed
I'd say both have aged horribly. At least Ocarina's soundtrack still puts me in the mood.
For a while I was pretty sore with TP, but after my recent playthrough with the HD port, I really gained a better appreciation for the second half, even after playing BOTW (The world and shrines were great, but the dungeons are pretty meh. This games was still almost excellent to me though). If I were to rate the two halves of TP and OoT:
1st half: OoT- 7 TP-5.5
2nd half: OoT- 8 TP-9
But this is just my simple opinion.
Gotta be honest here. I find OoT overrated, but I'd pick that game over TP. TP just dragged way to much for me.
7:52... Could he have made that battle look any more hilarious?!
4:16 "The Hero of Fur" Fitting name for Wolf Link.
Twilight Princess is my favorite video game ever.
But I understand your criticisms and issues. I'm glad you had fun with this one, at least.
(The double Clawshots were so good that Skyward Sword threw them in just to have them. I really hope that becomes a series staple!)

John, you don't have to talk to the cats in the Hidden Village, you do that for a Heart Piece and nothing else.
I think Midna's probably my favorite "Companion" of the franchise.
Though if i'm 100% honest i'm not totally sure some of her lasting popularity doesn't have something to do with a certain purple haired lady.

I just can't stop laughing at these parts. They're so hilarious 🤣
IIRC, I believe the challenge of talking to all the cats in the Hidden Village was only a side quest for a heart piece. The initial Moblin raid at Hidden Village was necessary for story progression.
IVE WAITED SO LONG FOR THIS MOMENT
Did you seriously say "Werehog"?
Hopefully the laugh was not lost on you?
Technically this came first before the werehog.
sonicboy678 Yes. Yes he did. And that was my reaction too.
good jokes
I mean it's literally the same concept
"But why do I have to talk to all of these cats in the second visit to get to the next dungeon? There is no correlation to that whatsoever."
Probably no correlation because that's just a side quest to get a piece of heart.
The tutorial also gives the player an emotional connection with the characters as you see Link's relationship with Colin and Ilia.
“Skyward sword hasent got a HD remaster” I’m from the future and have news for you lol
@@dragonballhaven1417 tbh AOT's story is kinda meh I like Tp, SS, WW, Botw, MC, and LTTP way more than both AOT and MM they are kinda overrated
