You always need to support the brake caliper so you don't risk bending the brake line or risk breaking it. Save yourself problems by taking an simple extra step.

The wear indicator is incorrectly installed; it should be on the opposite side of the caliper. This allows it to 'open' and reset when the disc makes contact with it.
I am just a DIY mechanic, not a professional by any stretch, but isn't it bad to put brake cleaner on rubber caliper pin boots? Won't they enlarge and become loose?
No, it should be OK to use brake cleaner on rubber parts. Any effect will be temporary.
That is only correct for certain brands of brake clean. I've accidentally got brake clean on wire loom and watched it shrivel instantaneously.
You should bleed the brake lines when changing pads, since you have the wheel off.
