    Welcome to Romania, country of contrasts!
    Some of the most beautiful things you'll ever see, mixed with some of the ridiculous. All in all an absolutely unique and unforgettable place on earth.

    These are my favorite types of videos. There is something magical about a nice long roadtrip with a good car. And Evo, especially with Catchpole, is great at catching that magic. I've watched the McLaren MP4-12C roadtrip video at least a dozen times, and I'll do the same with this one. I don't have the money or time to go on roadtrips every week, so this is the next best thing :)

    Dear Henry, i applaud your choice and might i be honest this is one of the best piece of motoring journalism i ever saw. I sincerely thank you for taking the opportunity of visiting our beloved country, you see that's what makes Romania so special, that untamed feeling, that everything is so raw and timeless. As curent events go, i appreciate that you saw and tasted the good sides,unlike the other brits mentality on Romania. There ar still things to see, roads to discover and worth your wild, Romania welcomes you sir!

    Henry, as you say this road has been partly paved in 2012. So when Top Gear was there this road was nothing but gravel. they could simply not drive this road back then. So they were right at the time.

    Drove the Transfagasan a couple years ago. It was one of the most amazing driving experiences ever. Can't wait to hit the Transalpina too. It's hard for some English snobbery to admit these are two of the most amazing roads for drivers. Evidenced by showing "ranshackled" areas. Even though you drove through Sibiu and Curtea De Arges, which are both beautiful cities, but you failed to show. Instead had to get the cows and abandoned car....

    • @dorothylea5744
      @dorothylea5744 8 років тому

      We did both in 1 day from Bucharest ... 500 miles plus.... Transalpino was indeed better of the two roads.

    I drove both roads. Transfagarasan is better because of amazing views, better corners and things to do. With Jaguars supercharged V8 overtaking wouldn't be a problem here. I had lots of fun in my diesel mercedes, despite the trafic. Half of Transalpina is good, smooth road surface, very few cars, nice views, a little bit more fast corners comparing to Transfagarasan, but the other half streches trough absolute wildernes, lots of unpaved roads, mountain lakes, forests rivers, no civilisation, which makes it a little creepy, which in my opinion is good, because you get lots different emotions. Anyways, both roads are near each other, and if you are visiting Romania with a car, you can drive them both, it is an experience you will never forget!

  • @Munkenba
    @Munkenba 10 років тому +24

    To help out with the Transfagarasen's tourist problem, I think it should be treated like the Nurburgring, as in you pay a small fee and you wait in line where the cars are released upon it every 30 seconds or so, with traffic being allowed to flow one way in this half hour, then the other way in the next. Have it at say a 5 to 15 euro fee per car and hopefully the fee and the queue will keep the non enthusiasts away. The road will be quieter for the pilgrims who have come from afar, and the road will generate some revenue, everybody wins.

    • @Munkenba
      @Munkenba 9 років тому +2

      ***** But it's an enormous tourist attraction, might as well make money off it. Actually, another thought has come to mind. Why not build a tunnel underneath the mountain that bypasses the pass? Sure it would be expensive, but it would leave the road quieter and it would massively speed up the journey times of the non tourists. That's what most of western Europe does anyway.

    • @SuperAngelofglory
      @SuperAngelofglory 9 років тому +6

      the problem is Transfagarasan is much bigger than Nurburgring. While Nurburgring is only 5.148 km (3.199 mi), Transfagarasan is 90 km (60 mi) long so the required logisitics would simply make it not worthy for alternatively directed traffic. And a tunnel of that length (even on straight line) would be, on this state of economy, not expensive but simply utopical, as it would have to be even longer than the eurotunel between France and UK

    • @sobolanul82
      @sobolanul82 9 років тому +1

      *****
      Transfagarasan it was crowded by foreign and local tourists long before Top Gear had put it on TV. We know what we have and Balea Lake is crowed every year in the summer. Balea Lake it's also a starting point for a couple of beautiful mountains tourist foot tracks. The road was build to connect the center and south of the country on a shorter route. We cannot change that and it's a stupid idea to transform it in a circuit road.
      For cyclist competition the road is closed for few hours maximum 2 times per year. We like it like it is and all the people, cars trip lovers or mountain lovers, can enjoy it. Also the people, local ones, which transit the mountains for other business.
