Looks identical to my Craftsman PYT 9000 (2011) I have. Mine is labeled "Hydro-Static 618-0319." Still runs well. Thanks for the video. I've not found ANY better UA-cam. Update; I meant to say Hydro-Gear. Upon pulling the top fill plug and removing the expansion tank my HG was full to the top. I syringed out using livestock syringe about an inch and half in diameter by five inches and clear poly tubing. Put a piece of bailing wire inside the tube to direct deep into the axel. Got 50 ounces out and could see no more oil. Refilled with new back to the top. Tractor Supply store had Hydro-Static oil on the shelf. One gallon $29. May my tractor will work another 11 years now. But will change the trans at three per your recommendation. Thanks.

My mtd 42inch 16.5 hp has the exact same transmission as the mower in your video for anyone else in my situation
Excellent video! I have an older Craftsman 42" mower with this exact transmission. My transmission is suddenly working very weak. It will move forward and reverse but nowhere near as fast as it used to and not up or down hills. I am thinking my fluid levels are not only low but need to be changed after 15 years! This video really helps me. Thanks!
@@PeteyMcSavage I wrestled with that thing for a couple of weeks and ultimately realized the transmission is not designed to be serviceable. I managed to siphon as much of the old fluid as I could and added new fluid but it didn’t help. I ended up replacing my mower
There is a filter inside the transmission. You can get parts. Seals our also available. If anyone having trouble getting the plug out just give it some taps on top. Works most of the time . But ust hard enough that you don't damage the housing or plug.
When you add that first quart, to spin the wheels for a while, use straight 10 weight oil. It's cheaper and thinner, will get more dirt out than using the thicker weight oi and less costly too.
@@repairvehicle I know and you aren't going to keep it in there, it gets drained after cycling through the trans axle. A couple remaining ounces won't hurt and thing.
I saw this when replacing my battery...saw the tray came out and noticed the fill and overflow bottle. Nothing in the manual other than lifetime serviced. Thank you!
I wasn’t concerned until you presented how filthy and contaminated the fluid was....I need to service mine STAT.. Commercial lawn tractor spin on oil filter engine and grease Zerks everywhere for long life with proper maintenance. Even a little dashboard computer that tells you when to service parts of the tractor based on hours of use. All this to ensure a long life machine. Yet the transmission sits in its own filth, ignored, forgotten and dies prematurely....nice.
Do you happen to know what size of wrench the fill plug is supposed to be? 6mm is far too small, 8mm too big, 7mm isn't part of the metric wrench sets. The standard metric set..1/4" is too small as well and I don't have anything larger at the moment. It's the exact same transmission and your insert used to remove the fill plug is slightly larger than 1/4". So probably 5/16". Absolute cock suckers that will burn in hell that made these transmissions so difficult to service like this.
@@repairvehicle It's a weird one! It is either a 6.5mm or 9/32". 1/4" is too small and 5/16" is too large. 6mm is too small and 7mm is too large. My guess is it is 6.5mm or 9/32". I got it out using a 1/4" pulled to a hard angle to grip enough to remove the filler plug. It almost stripped out, but got it. Judging by the filth of the oil from my transmission, this is something that MUST be done every season with engine oil. These being sealed and only magnets to capture particles is a crime. Flushing mine out until it comes out clear. Third time and still dark. Good thing I got 2 gallons of hydrostatic oil. Thanks again for making this video and bringing this to people's attention. Lot of money spent on this equipment to be sabotaged like this. Subscribed.
Thank you for the video. I have a Troy bilt Super Bronco XP 5 years old. 425 hours. Of course the manual says transmission fluid is not able to be changed. I hope I can do what you did. We cut pastures, harrow and pull a manure spreader. It’s used heavily.
@@repairvehicleexactly 💯. I'll buy a older tractor or diesel truck over newer anytime it's possible. The right to repair with deere tractors is bullshit. The def on OTR diesel trucks is also BS. Bring back the good old day's enough with technology it's designed to control our abilities.
Thank you so much for this video. I also have a Cub Cadet LTX 1045 that is in dire need of this service. I hope I didn't wait to long. Thank you again.
Thank you for this video it is very helpful. I have the same transmission with leaking seal and have no idea what level it should be at and now I know.
I tried to remove my fill plug on my Cub Cadet SLTX 1054 and snapped off two of those driver bits, it's a perfect fit, but the small detent in the bit where the collar of the drill driver locks onto, is where it kept snapping, I've soaked it in PB Blaster, will let it set overnight and try again. According to Cub Cadet's Parts Diagram it's a SAE #6 plug, but the #6 Allen Socket I have isn't as snug of a fit, as the backwards driver bit.
Finally got the plug out today!! I had to hammer a larger Torx socket bit into it and she finally busted free!! sadly my siphon hose just barely fits in the hole, so I couldn't get much siphoned out. I did read on a cub cadet forum that a guy installed a drain plug in his Hydrostat. I'm going to give that a shot.
This is one of the best explained video's I've seen on You Tube! Very well done. I was thinking about, should I change my transmission fluid in my Husqvarna lgt2554, so I looked, it doesn't say anything about it in the manual. So I start looking on line, and you tube. I purchased my riding tractor on 5-26-2011, so, over 10 year's ago. I've never changed the transmission fluid, although I service it every year. It has to be very dirty. I've not had any problems with my Husqvarna, not even a flat tire, I did replace the battery once. I haven't looked yet, but do you think my Husqvarna lgt2554 will be similar ? It has a Tuff Torq hydrostatic transmission. I will get my son-in-law to help me do this. Thank you for posting this great video! Thanks, John
I just bought mine, will delivered at my home on the 12th. This is a very GOOD video. Thank you for sharing. Looks like I need to pick up some tools, though :)
Hi thank you for responding. I spoke to hydro gear and a technician told me I have to take the air out of the system after the transmission fluid change. I’m not sure how to do it. I’m having some slipping issues after I change the fluid when going up hill and he told me I have air in the system and I have to purge the air out after every transmission fluid change. Thanks
Mine also has a leaking seal . I filled mine to the top , drove it and rechecked and it was at about the same level as you measured except I used a straight blade Craftsman screw drived . My plug required a 1/4 inch hex drive to remove , not a 6mm
Same here guess I just have to remove my sheetmetal body. My Lt 1045 is a 07 with all original 660hrs. We like the machine just too small for our needs now we have more property looking for a true garden tractor with loader not cheap but should last the rest of my time perhaps my son's as well. Lot of garbage nowadays. Good luck brother
Thank you for the video! I also use Amsoil products and have good luck with them. For vehicle manual transmissions and differentials they seems to retain color longer than even Red Line for me. Anyway I am in the market for new lawn tractor and left messages to other videos of why wouldn't vacuuming out from the fill valve work. If you do this every year, your transmission will work far longer. Sort of like draining sealed automatic transmission and replacing with the exact amount a few times to get a high percentage of new fluid in with the least hassle. Cheers!!!
@@thedude8976 That's a great idea, mark and remove the casing, tap, clean to remove any shavings, and install a magnetic drain plug while you're at it.
my mower has filter on the gear box i just changed it dont think it had ever been changed before very heavy did he say any think about the filter or do they not have one it underneath the gear housing about the same size as oil filter on the engine might want to check it out
need to ask my white fan back there is tight and you can't even spin it by hand , is that too tight and not sure if it has been like that since I bought the mower
@@repairvehicle before it was repaired you could spin it by hand slightly . After I put on new drive belt it got tighter . You could spint it by hand a little before new drive belt . Old drive belt broke and I had to push the mower up my hill over 150 feet . I could tell mice must have chewed the belt . I found a dead mouse in my shed just before belt broke . I always make sure I keep shed clean and watch I don't get mice in there . But i think my 2 rescue cats must have chased it in there from the woods . That is why they were stalking the shed
Dirty oil is responsible for tractor not moving. Second reason possibly , parts worn out and changing oil might not help. But there is no way to know unless you change fluid
I put 85w - 140 super tech gear lubricant in my craftsman l.t 1000 it's a little thick 😂 but it seems to work good only problem is when it's cold you can't push the mower by hand the transmission is stiff tires will not turn easy until you warm it up 2 too 3 minutes... 😂
Yes. A year later transmission is so responsive it feels like it's better than brand new. I just tried cutting grass few days ago and it's amazing how transmission works.
Great video I have a cub cadet 1050 and it has the hydrogear 618-0391 and it looks like the one your working on and I can't get the plug out . Would it be pressed in.
Great idea using the screwdriver as a dipstick. Also I like the emphasizing of cleanliness. I cringe every time I see someone tear into an engine or transmission caked in dirt (which seems to happen more often than not).
I'll take it that part with the little black cap on it is the expansion tank you mentioned? How does that affect the total changing of the oil? Does some oil have to remain in the expansion tank no matter what?
@@repairvehicle Probly not. Thanks. I would not have known how to do it were it not for your video. So I ordered me a small vacuum pump and a gallon of the oil already. Thanks again.
Thank you for the vid. Is "Lawn Tractor Transaxle Vent Valve" the same hole that you used to replace transmission fluid? Mine is Craftman YT3500 which has a fan on top of transmission. There is a rubber plug next to it. It is called "Lawn Tractor Transaxle Vent Valve."
i did knot know i had a filter on trans till i had to replace drive belt i lifted the mower on its side with eng lift i saw the filter i dont think it had ever been changed out of sight out of mind you need to change this filter when you change oil in trans.
ok still with the hydrostaatic fluid . I have tried and tried to get the plug out to put in hydrostatic fluid but it is so tight even my dewalt impaact driver can't get it out . . Left is to loosen it but it won't loosen it at all .
Great video as I just picked up my first rider and it's a cc 1046vt and looking to change all the oils but couldn't figure this out. I wonder if I can use the ford ptu drain plug add to put a drain on the bottom? Has anyone ever tried it?
I filled my transmission with 20w-50 syntetic oil because it was hardly moving up the hill and at som point it stopped moving completly when transmision got hot and when Ive put new oil in, everything was back to original, it was pulling up the hill no problem but after few months I noticed that after transmision heated up it all started back again, I couldn't go up hills . Should I change the oil again?
it doesn't hurt to replace fluid and see if it helps. I know a guy in my area who's tractor stopped going forward completely, he changed the fluid and problem went away.
this is one of the examples, this comment came from a different video on my channel (why Hyundai owners switch to amsoil oil) You can go to this video and ask him questions if you want. raburn2906 • 5 days ago @repairvehicle The Amsoil Hydrostatic Transmission fluid is top notch! I am currently using in my Cub Cadet. It completely stopped all the whining and slipping issues that I was having
@@repairvehicle that means dropping the trans and/or completely separating it from the tractor. I’d rather not, but if that’s the only way I guess it’s the only way to do the fluid change.
@@QuickDrawWP should be able to remove most bolts from the foot rest and the back cover off and lift the whole shell up and pull gas tank out. That's what I did to get my tank out when I had to repair a hole in the tank. Wish I would have done trans fluid when I did the tank. Live & Learn! Good Luck
Good question, I had no leaks everything is dry. 13 years later I still have this same mover and have zero leaks and it’s working better than brand new. I can’t say same thing about my tires.
I was only thinking the other day "if" oil has to be changed every 6-12 months regardless of km's/miles done oil containers would have a "used by date on them"! the way these oem companies carry on to get you back in for serving is a scam in my opinion.
There are many causes that can result in the degrading of lube oil. The most common are oxidation, thermal breakdown of the lube oil, micro-dieseling, additive depletion and contamination.
I have a 1040 cub cadet, the gas tank is over the rear end, could you recomend a good way to access the plug as you have shown, thanks, my mower doesn't want to pull forward very fast, reverse is ok, do you think this is the problem?
All transmissions have a filter. I think I googled Cub cadet 1050 transmission filter, then select the Amazon filter. Looks more like a fine screen. I suppose a person could find a parts diagram somewhere other than the Cub cadet website which is no use to anyone except a dealer. Lawn mower was most likely made by MTD. I wonder if the transmission is made by tuff torque. I took a zero turn transmission apart made by tough torque. They made it as cheap as possible. Not made to last very long. Seems like they never put a drain plug on there transmissions. The zero turn failed after 3 years of use. Filter was clogged. Maybe it got hot in the Pistons stuck. The return springs disintegrated. Little pieces went all through the unit and did more damage. Manufacturer blames the oil or fluid. 303 John Deere fluid must have been defective a few years ago. I thought I seen a lawsuit on the internet.
Could you let me know what you find out. I ordered oil vacuum .my cub 1050 is at least 10 years old.no maintenance on Transmission. Like you said in video, designed to fail after warranty is out.mtd uses tuff tork Transmissions.i don't know any brand mower that mtd does manufacture. Pretty sure it China parts assembled in Tennessee USA to avoid paying USA tax and tariffs.?
@@repairvehicle I just watched the video of a tough torque transmission from a cub cadet being overhauled. Which really didn't need to be overhauled. The filter in that one was deep inside. Mechanic didn't bother to hold the filter to the light to see if it was clogged. He was more of a clown than a mechanic. All hydraulic systems have filters. A hydraulic system is more sensitive to dirt than any engine is. Filter cost $30 on Amazon. I'm not going to replace my filter. The transmission is working great. So I will take my new vacuum pump and suck out as much fluid as I can from the fill hole. I'll add some new fluid to it. Start the engine, forward and reverse, then shut it off. Suck that fluid out. I should get about 75% of the old oil out. Then I'll fill it up. The level will be 1 and 9/16 from the top. I'm not going to put motor oil in it. I want tuff torq oil. 10w30 or something close. Synthetic hydrostatic transmission fluid. People in the South might want 10W-40. People in the north might want 5w-20 if it's used for snow blower or snow plow. If I thought my transmission was not working properly, I might try removing the pan from the bottom to get to the filter. If I thought my transmission needs to be overhauled, I would see what the price is on the overhaul kit and decide if I want to remove the unit from the mower frame.
@@repairvehicle I'll have to dig into that more. And I wanna edit my statement. I bought a leftover 2020 xt2 gx54 d. As I couldn't stand the black rims on the 2021 model lol. If I wanted black rims I'd buy a Porsche.
I'm not sure if you will see this but I'm having a similar issue.. my Trans doesn't like to work when it has been driven for about 15 mins or so, I put a new drive belt on and the fluid looks to be good (not burnt or dirty), just seems to lose momentum after the 15 mins of run time. Any help is appreciated!!
I have a LTX 1050, last time i mowed the gas pedal was kind of stiff and hard to push, i dont think i have ever changed the transmission fluid. Do you think this may be whats causing this?
my L.T 1000 i have to drive it around for 20 minutes after i add fluid and burp it then i add more fluid an burp it again seems to work better seems like it burps more air out when I test drive it
@@repairvehicle I bought a suction gun at the parts store. Probably have to remove my gas tank. It has the huge tank under the seat. I just had the tank out on 46" Poulan Pro. PB22H46YT. They are a real pain in the butt to get in and out. Thanks for video
Possible yes. But moisture as a condensation enters transmission too. Transmission Fluid has a limit 2-3 years bottle life. When it's in service it becomes contaminated and good faster.
I have a Craftsman LT1000 that is about 15 years old. My manual lists 20W-50 Oil and then it says "72.8 ounces" in the parts section. Since they obviously never intended for us stupid consumers to service our own mowers, I'm wondering if 72.8 ounces sounds like the right amount you used. Thanks again for an awesome video. I've been searching all day for a transmission like mine!
Great video! Question, would it be better to use transmission fluid to flush it? Plus driving it 100ft or so then draining it of the flush seams a good idea??? Thanks for any input. Dan
Yes, ATF, it has lots of detergents in it to keep a transmission clean. It makes sense to me, but you've done this before. I have a similar model I'm definitely doing this to.
@@repairvehicle i used atf in mine then mixed gear oil in to thicken it up, didn't have fluid when I got it and I cant seem to get it to even spin the tires when they are off the ground, is it supposed to be easy to refill them because I have tried to purge it literally 12 times today, I have a craftsman lt1000 with the hydro gear trans
Hey my ltx1050 started making a horrible grinding noise and is really slow getting my fat ass up even a slight hill now. Never did that before. Any ideas?
Mine was never changed before either. 9 years on same fluid, way to long. If it was mine equipment I would change it. Fresh fluid only helps, dirty fluid causes more wear.
I'm not aware of someone changing transmission fluid and it failed after. I know that transmissions fail after transmission fluid flush. Transmission flush and drain and fill two different things.
After stripping the plug using the 1/4 Allen socket i thought i was going to need to go buy more bits so i can try and manage and get the plug out but then i decided to go and try and use the t40 torx socket i gave it a good zappe and with the help of a piece a pipe gave it a good ol' try and i only heard paaaahhhh and the ratchet slipped so i thought oh man now I'm going to need to buy me another torx socket so i looked at the plug and didn't see it being more damaged so i looked at the torx socket and it wasn't broken so i put it back on the plug gave it a turn it started coming off i was like uuuuhhh eeeeeeeehhhh so if you strip your plug get yourself a t40 torx socket and give it some hammering down then give it a try it'll come right off
If your transmission is hydrostatic, it needs to be hydrostatic fluid either synthetic or none synthetic. Best to use synthetic, it provides better lubrication and resistant to break down due to heat
@@repairvehicle willdo. Thanks for the quick response. I bought a toro riding mower for 50 bucks. The trans still works but it makes some whining noise either at the trans or drive belt.

@@repairvehicle I know and you aren't going to keep it in there, it gets drained after cycling through the trans axle. A couple remaining ounces won't hurt and thing.
@@billconserva1461 I rather be safe than sorry. Diluted fluid is no longer same fluid
If did not mention in the video, then I don't know the size.
@@repairvehicle
It's a weird one!

Thank you for this video it is very helpful. I have the same transmission with leaking seal and have no idea what level it should be at and now I know.

6mm is the metric cousin to 1/4", which is the proper size hex bit for removal and installation of the drain plug. Everything on my LTX 1046VT is SAE.
Thanks
The plug is 1/4" hex. 6mm will strip it, and it's very easy to strip. Mine was super tight, but an impact driver will break it loose
I don’t recommend installing drain plug. It will fail after plug install

Thanks
What do you have?
How old is your equipment?
Did you ask him how to take air out?
Did you have slipping before fluid change?
Loosen fill plug, both tires off ground, cycle fwd. and rev. a few times, check level, tighten plug.
Good video. What is in that gray container with a rubber cap next to the trannie drain plug?
I think it’s a expansion tank since fluid expands when it becomes hot

Mine also has a leaking seal . I filled mine to the top , drove it and rechecked and it was at about the same level as you measured except I used a straight blade Craftsman screw drived . My plug required a 1/4 inch hex drive to remove , not a 6mm
Great video I have a different model without the removable tray but you got me in the right ballpark

1/4 is the correct socket to remove transmission bolt for a Cub Cadet.
Cheers!!!
If every year why not tap it and install a drain plug
@@thedude8976 That's a great idea, mark and remove the casing, tap, clean to remove any shavings, and install a magnetic drain plug while you're at it.

Dirty oil is the reason why my craftsman tractor is not going back or forward?

Dirty oil is responsible for tractor not moving.
Second reason possibly , parts worn out and changing oil might not help. But there is no way to know unless you change fluid

So did the oil change fix the slipping?
Yes. A year later transmission is so responsive it feels like it's better than brand new. I just tried cutting grass few days ago and it's amazing how transmission works.
Do they leak at the axle where meets the tire ? Seems mine is leaking at the seal
Nope. Zero leaks
Why is your leaking?
Great video I have a cub cadet 1050 and it has the hydrogear 618-0391 and it looks like the one your working on and I can't get the plug out . Would it be pressed in.
I don't think
My Craftsman 54 inch has the gas tank under the seat so I can not change the fluid as easily as you did.
I don’t know. Does it matter if some remain?

Mine has the gas tank under the seat right over the transmission. SLT 1554.
Remove gas tank
@@repairvehicle that means dropping the trans and/or completely separating it from the tractor. I’d rather not, but if that’s the only way I guess it’s the only way to do the fluid change.
You cannot remove gas tank from the top?
@@repairvehicle nope. The transaxle would have to come off then the gas tank from underneath.

What happens if you lost fluid in a leak so your reference point might not be a correct way of doing this
Good question, I had no leaks everything is dry.
Oil in a machine will get water/contaminates in it if in a machine.
I have a 1040 cub cadet, the gas tank is over the rear end, could you recomend a good way to access the plug as you have shown, thanks, my mower doesn't want to pull forward very fast, reverse is ok, do you think this is the problem?
Very often dirty fluid is the cause for transmission not work properly. Removing gas tank maybe is the best way to get to the plug?
How do I change the filter on the 1050
There is a filter?
I don't know how to change filter. I have look into this. I was not aware of filter on hydrostatic transmission.
Can you wash the transaxle with cheaper oil, then add the amsoil?
You can but it would not give you best results against wear
