I just want to say thank you so much for getting straight to the point in all your videos! your very detailed and give all good information to the question I have , like you already know what I’m going to ask 😂
thanks for the tip , however in old transmissions type trque converter 722.1 mercedes 4 speeds with gear softener by vacuum valve and acceleration rod connected to the accelerator of the vehicle
I took my truck in and had the transmission flushed. It started driving a bit strange. Felt kinda slow or weak. I barely drive so there wasn’t many miles on it. It was extremely difficult to get the transmission up to 160 degrees to check. I drove around city blocks for about a hour. I checked at 163 degrees and it was overfilled. I drew out about 250ml to get it back into the hash marks. It’s at the very top of the hot range. It drives great again!!!! I’m going to still take it in and have the fluid and filter changed. The fluid was darker than I thought it would be with only a couple thousand miles on it.
Very helpful. The only thing I would add to your video would be what to do if the transmission is overfilled. How to remove part of the transmission fluid to get the level at where it belongs.
Start engine let it idle for a few, after a few minutes hold the brakes and shift thru all the gears and then into neutral . Check your atf level with engine still at idle ,add fluid as needed slowly . Repeat process until level is correct
Your two example cases: One is the transmission fluid level (overnight in cold morning before starting engine) is all the way high above the hot mark on the dipstick, it is definitely overfilled. Another case is the transmission fluid level is OK when the transmission is hot(after ten or fifteen minutes drive) with engine running and the transmission fluid level is less 1/4" above the hot mark. If the two cases happen on the same transmission, the the transmission fluid is overfilled or not? My transmission level is this situation, do I need drain some out?
@Do-iz6qdbecause when it is hot there is more fluid throughout the whole transmission and torque converter. When it sits for a while and cools down, the fluid drains back into your transmission pan(which is where dipstick is reading from). Always consult your manual, because some cars are checked hot and others can be checked cold. And sometimes, there’s not even a dipstick! Which is a real PITA!
Random question that might be dumb. My son's car started having some issues that seem to be transmission related. Background: I bought him the car about a year and a half ago. In that time the only stuff been done to it was by his dad, none of which are transmission related stuff. The issues just started a few days ago and got dramatically worse pretty quickly. He started noticing it seemed to not be shifting the same from 2nd to 3rd and then down shifting. His car is automatic but he said it just felt off. Then the other day it got so bad that he was worried about driving it so I drove it. To me it feels like his overdrive is kicking in for no reason between 2nd and 3rd. So I checked the transmission fluid wondering if it's a leak or just needs to be changed really bad and it is seriously overfull. At cold it is just about the hot line and at temp the fluid is like past the words on the dip stick. My question is, could that be causing what's happening even though it has to have been that full for over a year and either way can I just drain a little or do I have to do a full transmission fluid change in order to fix the situation?
hey bro i am a new subscriber here .. I like your channel very informative And entertaining ! You know how to educate and explain very good 👍. By the way do you have a video of what happens if you overfill your engine motor with an extra qrt of oil
My 08 Town and Country doesn't have the dip stock and the using the engine dipstick trick on UA-cam, I'm not sure if it's correct or not, I pumped most of it out and poured 3/4 what was but there was no foam.

I have both a drain bolt and dip stick ,which would you rather pull fluid from keeping in mind air in the system or is that not possible ! (2006 infiniti g35) hard shifting from P to R etc... im sure itll fix my issue i have no puddles
So, i have a 99’ nissan pathfinder. And as a precaution. I tried to do a transmission fluid change, i replaced it with the amount of how many quarts came out. After driving it for a few weeks, it started having problems shifting. Now it wont shift to 4th gear. I was on the freeway driving at 4k rpm at 3rd gear. Please help. Anything would help
this is wrong. when you check most transmissions you need the vechicle to be running, when its the morning and its cold, you turn the car on and the fluid should be low
So I changed my transmission fluid. Added probably 7 1/2 quarts when it called for 6.6. I check this morning and it's on the bottom of the hot line when it hasn't been running. I idle it for 10 minutes and it's not even on the cold line after that. What does that mean?!
From what I understand, it often depends on the condition of the fluid that’s already in there. If you see that your current ATF is really dark colored and almost burned looking, I wouldn’t go doing a full flush because there’s possibly parts in the transmission that are so worn out that they depend on the grit in the fluid to function properly, like the clutch system. I think ChrisFix did a video on this too. If it’s still kinda light red/brown color and needs replacement, pretty sure you’ll be okay to do a complete flush.
I would agree for the most part but he could play it safe and do like 3 drain and fills over a 6 month period. You really only want to do a full flush if it’s been flushed consistently like every 30 thousand miles.
What I'd like to know is can you mix different types of automatic transmission fluids in your transmission? Will it still drive and function okay? Because I've done this and the level is okay but I have noticed the performance has declined and the r.p.m. is higher after 65 m.p.h. Thanks
you should only use the type specified by your manufacturer. Mixing different types can gum up and seriously damage your transmission. Drain and fill your transmission fluid with the right fluid.
Most cars require the engine to be running when checking trans fluid. For Honda, mostly need to off the engine to check, within 60-90 second after engine off do the check.
Great vid!! I have older toyos: 08 vibe and an ‘11 highlander. Do u read these dipsticks wen cars r level and running/ hot/ shifted thru all gears, or, is it possible to read it w/ engine off? Thx👍🏼

I really can’t believe that I might have done this. Just replaced the Moyer on a rat rod. It ran fine before replacement but it did sit for a few years. It wouldn’t move so I thought it was low. I added with it while cold forgetting to to warm up. Don’t know if this is the problem. It never really warmed up. But noticed when I shut it down fluid was almost gushing out of the dip stick . Hopefully I didn’t damage it.
Very good and helpful! I had this situation many years back. I was not the one who did it. 🙃 What is the how-to recommendation to bring this to normal if it is discovered?
My transmition fluid looks high and my car went into limp mode the other day with check engine, still in limp mode. I thought it was a shift solenoid but could it just be the excess fluid possibly causing that? I thought it may just be the fluid not being able to go back in bc the solenoid but migutnbe overfilled.
Maybe my mechanic overfilled the transmission fluid cuz he was late at night closing shop and wanted to deliver the car that night. Perhaps tomorrow I'll try to drain some fluid and start and see if the car drives 😊
Just add my transmission line replaced on a GMC Sierra 2012 and the mechanic had way too much oil in it within minutes when I left to try the truck. It was slipping and Thanks jerking when exceeding speed. I have a 2015 Honda civic Ex-L I'm loading alot of transmission fluid out of the top vent why also there is no dipstick in the transmission just a plug
I got a 2004 Nissan frontier when I checked the transmission fluid when it’s cold it’s way above the cold line then when I check it when it’s hot, it doesn’t even register. I put 2 quarts of transmission fluid in it and it still has no reading when it’s hot I got to warm my truck transmission up to be to put it in reverse
The transmission fluid level seems to be one of the most ovlelooked cause of symptoms when it comes to transmission performance. Not enough and you will experience high rpm shifts and or hard shifts. Too much and the transmission fluid will become too hot and airy and not adequeately lubricating and pressurising the transmissission which will eventually lead to clutch failure and or broken internal parts. No 2 transmissions are alike. We have had some rebuilds that shift best on the low end of the hot grid of the dip stick and others that perform best on or just above the hot grid of the dip stick.
Very important point. Some vehicles require the motor to be idling when you check levels .. the torque converter gets filled and what is left in the pan as reserve is what you measure with the dipstick. Follow your manufacturers guidelines ✅✅
Great video. Much 2008 gmc envoy has an issue with the transmission. It would reverse but up to a few feet and stop. It will go forward for a few yards and stop. I would sometimes go when you give power.
Hi, why is my transmission oil at the full mark when I drive around town and then if I take a long 2-3 hour drive, my transmission oil is about 1/4 more above the last fill line? I don't understand that. It seams like the hotter the car runs and longer driving temperatures my transmission oil rises on the dipstick. The trans was rebuilt about a year ago. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank u
Great video!! But I have one question, if my trans dispstick doesn’t have a cold check mark and only check hot, will checking while cold give me an inaccurate reading?? I’ve overfilled my trans beyond belief and when checking while hot the entire dipstick is always wet. So I’m wondering if I can get a better reading while cold and if that would be accurate even if the dispstick only had check while hot marking.
My car also only has a hot reading. You need to drive your car for a few minutes to get everything up to operation temp then park your car on a level surface and check your transmission fluid level. If the hot level is good, wait at least few hours or overnight for everything to cool down and pull the dipstick again. Use a small file to scratch the dipstick at the cold fluid level and now you have an accurate cold fill level.
Thank you for that Great Information, I Checked my Tansmission, I can't Believe I Was 3 Quarts Over, I just drained it and Took out Alot of Contaminated Transmission Fluid, I Drove Around And Rechecked the Level, Then I Added 1 Quart of New Fluid and it Feels Alot Smoother... I'm Gonna Have to Change my Fluid next week, New Solenoids, Clean and Inspect my Valve Body, change the Trany, Filter, Flush out my Transmission Cooler, and Pit new Amzoil Full Synthetic Transmission Oil in, And Hopefully The Transmission Feels Alot more Smoother.....
@@anthonyta3369 By Draining, it's like close to 7 Quarts, if you do a proper straight flush it close to 12 Quarts, it not gonna be 100% all drained, but it will be in the over 90% of old Fluid out...witch is a Good significant amount of contaminated fluid Out from the Valve Body, Torque Converter ect..
Yesterday I added a full bottle of tf to to top it off and today when I was driving, white smoke came out and I pulled in parking lot and transmission fluid was leaking under the car and on tire. I think I overfill it because my rpm was higher than normal and I could feel my car jolting. I looked on yt and it said to drain the fluid and add new which I did and it's driving better now but do you think it caused any damage and could happen again?
Very useful video, had gear fluid leaking problems awhile ago, changed the seal and was fine, then started leaking again after couple of months and replaced new gasket. Not leaking anymore but slowly became underpowered and having some whining sound, also slipping gear. Have an appointment with new trusted mechanic within few days and hopefully solve this issue. Not gonna trust my previous mechanic anymore since they kept saying my gear fluid is enough and nothing has to be done after I visit them for sevaral times whenever I feel and heard some of the weird signs and sounds.
Lol...I had my transmission rebuilt, and it's started slipping, making loud noises. I couldn't drive over 40 mph. The check engine light came on with 2 codes about the solenoids. So I took it back to the shop, and the guy did a test run and deleted the codes and said it runs fine😮 I said what about the transmission leak, and he said the transmission was overfill so it Purge what it didn't needed😂😂😂😂 I said what! I've never heard that before mane. I said, "How is that so?" I rather him to say what you said about the pressure and the gasket 😢
I just bought a gmc truck and my transmission started to slip and when I would step on it and I checked my transmission oil level it is overfilled can that be that issue ?

Hey I recently changed my fluid on a G37 sedan 2009 7 AT and it’s sealed and had to pump it I maybe have added a lil to much and it started to slip a lil at 2nd gear I only drove it about 10 man after that occurred and I wana know should I start draining fluid from it immediately and or will that possibly work or help the issue
Pls explain this to me. Its driving me nuts. My transmission fluid level is alwas at hot level on the dipstick whether the car has been sitting overnight or measured when hot. So regardless of the temperature the level is always at hot. Should I remove some or not. Car is a 2006 c class w203 cdi.
I just checked my transmission fluid and it’s really high. I noticed the transmission fluid was added 3 k miles with a conditioner just before I bought it. I looked under the car it’s it’s wet wheee the pulleys go into the transmission and had dropped down onto steering rod. Any suggestions what I should do?
I changed my transmission fluid on my 2016 suburban and I over filled it to were its cold and its above the hot line lOK? an inch over it should I try to take some out or it should be ok?
If it is overflowed, will it also leak from the cap? I am afraid i overfilled it by mistake thinking it didnt have enough and now its leaking when the car gets hot and comming out from the cap where you check the levels.
Just bought a car. When I drive it first thing in the morning it shifts perfect, but after driving it for 5 or 10 minutes it likes to ram into 2nd & 3rd gear. What's this about?
Transmissions all have a vent, if overfilled it will puke it out hot. The worst that can happen is foaming ,and aeration. Been building transmissions for 40+ years. Will not blow seals, horseshit.

That’s ridiculous, I would tell them to drain it out and fill it up correctly or refund you your money so you can have someone else do it correctly! Or better yet, read the manual and do it yourself. Probably not that hard.
I'm sure the video is very helpful to a lot of people. But most tips are for cars that has dipstick to check transmission fluid. Some new cars dont have dipstick
I think there's a hidden conspiracy the ATF fluid expands with age.... I'm working on a customer CVT it's overfilled but it has an overflow vent which makes it impossible to overfill.... But it's coming out and coming out!!!!
Are there cases where a replaced transmission's dipstick is incorrect? If you can't believe its' readings how can you adjust to the right level? (used vehicle no idea of true repair history)

How many quart you suppose to fill?
Woah
Nice if kia Rio came with a dipstick 😢
Very useful video, had gear fluid leaking problems awhile ago, changed the seal and was fine, then started leaking again after couple of months and replaced new gasket. Not leaking anymore but slowly became underpowered and having some whining sound, also slipping gear. Have an appointment with new trusted mechanic within few days and hopefully solve this issue. Not gonna trust my previous mechanic anymore since they kept saying my gear fluid is enough and nothing has to be done after I visit them for sevaral times whenever I feel and heard some of the weird signs and sounds.
So what do your new mechanic do to the transmission to solve the issue
Lol...I had my transmission rebuilt, and it's started slipping, making loud noises. I couldn't drive over 40 mph. The check engine light came on with 2 codes about the solenoids. So I took it back to the shop, and the guy did a test run and deleted the codes and said it runs fine😮 I said what about the transmission leak, and he said the transmission was overfill so it Purge what it didn't needed😂😂😂😂 I said what! I've never heard that before mane. I said, "How is that so?" I rather him to say what you said about the pressure and the gasket 😢
Yeah, that’s definitely some bs on their part. I would have been ticked off.
I did find it helpful!!!💯👍🏽
You could theoretically lewve then dipstick ioen and in time it will evaporate orbgwt lower 👍
I just bought a gmc truck and my transmission started to slip and when I would step on it and I checked my transmission oil level it is overfilled can that be that issue ?
Me sitting here in my Volvo, green with envy at the existence of an atf dipstick 😂
You have a check plug somewhere I’m guessing?
Man, for all my questions after fixing my car just a few days ago myself all searches lead to one video of yours LOL
Good video bro, ty
Why can't you just check it when it's cold in the morning when it's all drained?like engine oil.
bro i love your videos seriously help out so much not just this one all of them ben watching you for a minute favorite mechanic don’t even wanna watch anyone else my man
Hey I recently changed my fluid on a G37 sedan 2009 7 AT and it’s sealed and had to pump it I maybe have added a lil to much and it started to slip a lil at 2nd gear I only drove it about 10 man after that occurred and I wana know should I start draining fluid from it immediately and or will that possibly work or help the issue
My Nissan Altima it’s not shifting good and I just chek the deep stick an it looks over filled
Just bought a car. When I drive it first thing in the morning it shifts perfect, but after driving it for 5 or 10 minutes it likes to ram into 2nd & 3rd gear. What's this about?
Much appreciated knowledge and honest mechanic.
I’m about a half inch above the full hit mark… Should I drain some? I have a 06 Silverado
great explanation. Thanks
Ok so now what? 😂
Do I pump it out?
A bit odd video
Transmissions all have a vent, if overfilled it will puke it out hot. The worst that can happen is foaming ,and aeration. Been building transmissions for 40+ years. Will not blow seals, horseshit.
Hey bro I just replaced my transmission filter and replaced fluid on my 1971 maverick automatic trans. Now when I shift to drive or reverse. It jumps, did I just go myself?
@@joseespinoza93 early C4? Look in the pan where your old fluid went ,see if there is a spring about an inch long . And a check ball. If so, remove filter, you'll see ahere it goes. Ball first, then spring. Filter back on. Google c4 valve body breakdown. Should see it on the schematic. What engine , 351 windsor? Im a GM guy but I like all the older cars.
Interesting. I’ve seen those overfill ports. The ones I’ve seen on videos are plugged up
@@justanotherskid3801 if a vent hole is plugged , the transmission will push fluid up and out of the filler tube. 40+ years building, stock, race, and off road units.
@@justanotherskid3801 Got to always check , make sure the dirt daubers, haven't plugged em with dirt.
You are awesome as usual
That must be for newer vehicles. Mine only have one measure: hot.
Prolly why I can’t go into reverse no mor after fixing it thanks lol not letting no one else change my oils
i overfilled my atf out of fear now o have noticed it will not shift more than once when engine is cold. Is there a connection or not
Yes overfilling is definitely causing shift issues.
I will drain as soon as I can.
Drain or extrat it
Good video
Very useful, thank you.
The Ford dealership overfilled my transmission. I found out after they serviced it and it was shifting funny and then I noticed all the fluid was leaking out. They said it was just coming out of the overflow so it’s fine now. Is there even an overflow on those transmissions? 2021 10 speed
Those cars that don't have dip stick do have a level check bolt for checking the fluid level.
I think there's a hidden conspiracy the ATF fluid expands with age.... I'm working on a customer CVT it's overfilled but it has an overflow vent which makes it impossible to overfill.... But it's coming out and coming out!!!!
It doesn’t expand with age, it’s expands when heated up..
Are there cases where a replaced transmission's dipstick is incorrect? If you can't believe its' readings how can you adjust to the right level? (used vehicle no idea of true repair history)
Take to the dealer they can check the part number to see if the correct one is present.
What if your vehicle dont have a trans dipstick. Mine has a dual clutch trans. Ford Ecosport. How do i know if it has too much or not enough?
Does it have a user manual? If so, what does it say about checking the trans fluid level?
Well come on now man we know if u have a dipstick.what if u have no dipstick no stick
Do you have a user manual?
I guess some vehicles the dipstick has only hot mark, to make it more common sense to check the fluid when the fluid is hot.
What’s the user manual say?
Thank you!!!!
I got a question I checked my transmission oil and it needed some but I put some while it was running is that bad?
Did you read your user manual?
I had my 2002 Honda Odyssey trans rebuilt ... the shop told me to bring it back after i drive it 100 miles ... they had over filled the trans fluid and when I asked them about it ? They told me it was okay to do on that trans ! Well it now has 25,000 more miles on it and its still working well and the trans fluid is still over filled
But you Didn’t have any slipping issues or anything?
@@ytfootballzn3848 no problems at all and I have driven 30,000 miles on it
You're supposed to check the fluid while it is running .
Depends on the vehicle.
@@MrRedHotChiliMan I can't think of the vehicles that say to not do it that way except MAYBE Honda...
@@82_KID you’ve checked every vehicle? And yes, Honda(Acura)is one that is definitely different. My Tacoma has to be checked at a certain temperature range. So yes, there are always different/correct methods of checking your trans fluid. People should always consult their user manual, obviously.
I love you😊
