I still consider this as one of the best games out there, at least for it's age.
Hell i still play it now.
Turn on cheats, spawn 30 cultists, slaughter them in this amazing sword combat system and out i go.
Although the slow motion normally triggers when you kill the last enemy in a group, or win a lightsaber duel, there's an option in the menus that lets you make it so that slow motion triggers every time you or an opponent does a cool dodge using force powers in a lightsaber battle. It turns every lightsaber duel into a Star Wars version of Neo versus Agent Smith, and it is bloody brilliant.
I can understand why they didn't make it the default option - I imagine some players would get annoyed by the game going into slow motion several times per sword battle. But I was really glad I discovered that option when first playing this game, I played the whole game that way and it was awesome.
Since you like Age of Empires, you may be aware of this, but there is a SW game called Star Wars: Galatic Battlegrounds, that is made by Ensemble and runs in the Age of Empires 2 engine. You can play as just about anybody from the Rebel Alliance, Republic, Trade Federation, to the Gungans, the Confederacy, to the Wookies. It's a blast, and some of the improvements it made makes me enjoy it as much as AoE2 (especially since every army looks distinct, instead of me having to "pretend" that my elite Aztec warriors aren't plate mail, claymore weilding knights. Lol)
Also, I love Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. I'm actually as disappointed as you are that other games haven't attempted that combat system. I was hoping Force Unleashed, then Fallen Order, would both try the same- but to no avail.
I like Galactic Battlegrounds fine, my only issue with it is that Age of Empires II is not really balanced for air units. The mechanism is a bit awkward.
You couldn't dispense with air units completely because then people would wonder why there are no air units in Star Wars, but at least allowing normal ground units to fire on aircraft would have helped. (And we even see people on foot / in vehicles firing normal blaster weapons at aircraft in Star Wars, so it's entirely possible, whereas anti-air missiles are not really attested to as being fielded en masse elsewhere in Star Wars canon.) Aircraft already kind of break the game by being able to ignore terrain and walls, being able to ignore most units too is a bit unbalanced.
I had and have a blast playing this game over the years its great fun and ive even found the multiplayer against bots to be extremely fun even better when you get a few friends to join in

Minor disagree, i dont consider lack of character editor in previous game, jedi Outcast, as a downside.
Kyle Katarn is a great character, and i think Outcast beats the Academy storywise.
I agree I love academy and I’m playing through it now but outcast is just a bit better with the story. Katarn is a great character it’s a shame Disney won’t use him.
For anyone wondering, theres a mod for this called Movie Battles II. Its easily the best online star wars experience and still gets updated regularly today.
Fun fact, the controls for the speeder mission somehow feel worse on console
i didn't find them all that bad. Twitch? yeah but not horrible.
I bought this game when it came out and loved it so much that I played it on all difficulties just to experience the light saber battles.
You know, i played a lot of this game and i noticed why its so good, the combat just gives an absurd amount of freedom.
you can grip an enemy and bash into the ground, walls, ceilings,etc and kill them with the ragdoll, you can jump over them and use force push to see them fly in the air and die by gravity haha.
For example, while dual wielding sabers, if you do the jumping special attack (spinny one) you can actually throw one of the lightsabers, so you go above him spinning while the saber gets his legs...it's just such a shame we never saw anothe game with this combat style...it truly feels like lightsaber duels, fast, agile and dangerous...and i love it.
Don't forget to review Jedi Outcast as well.
One of the best and most memorable Star Wars games ever made along with Star Wars Racer.
Here's a hint, When in light saber battle you can use your middle mouse button to change stances. That is important to winning fights.
Jedi Academy is a tie for me for best Star Wars games. The other game is Republic Commandos.

@@briansheehan5256 yes, though they are more RPG oriented games. Jedi academy is more action based.
@@briansheehan5256 and to add, i have most of the star wars games. I got Republic commando when it first came out and it's still on my pc. Love that game. The starkiller games were ok. I stay away from the console kiddie type games with the exception of the lego version which are mindless fun. :)
I just caught this on sale on PSN store for $10. So far having fun and enjoying it a lot better than “Jedi Outcast: Jedi Knight”. But my favorite game for Star Wars combat has got to be “Jedi Fallen Order”. (But the heroes in “SW Battlefront II” feel pretty good in combat also!).

I’m not a big fan of it IMO but I can see why it’s liked
I really liked Star Wars: Dark Forces IV: Jedi Knight III: Jedi Outcast II: Jedi Academy with its open-ended levels, easy use of the console to mess around and improved lightsaber combat. Yet at the end of the day I do prefer Star Wars: Dark Forces III: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast because of the better structure of its story, levels that flow into one another without being a bunch of, well, video game characters and a better story.
Also note that the female player character in this game is voiced by the then not yet industry veteran Jennifer Hale, a few years before she voiced another badass space problem solver known as Commander Shepard.
