Jedi Outcast is one of the worst Star Wars game I ever played. You like the level design, are you serious? JO levels were a series of uninspired empty grey corridors and the puzzles made no sense with awful backtracking. Have you even played the Naboo level? What did you like about it, did you like the endless flat swamps, the green and grey hue throughout, the polygons the size of your screen, the enemy sniping you from unseen positions with pin point accuracy? There was nothing positive about this game and it was miles under Dark Forces II.. Maybe it’s a nostalgia bias or maybe it’s to generate clicks but I find it a bit misleading to tell them Jedi Outcast is such a great game when it’s not, because people may buy this game because of your review and they will 100% be disappointed. Jedi Outcast is not a good game and even back then, as a GameCube player, it looked really unfinished and last gen. Do not buy Jedi Outcadt, there is a reason it was poorly received. Also be careful with nostalgia reviews, these are not impartial review, the reviewer usually fails to cover any of the negatives about the game and there are PLENTY

Katarn himself was extremely close to falling for the dark side. I think he even briefly was a dark jedi in Mysteries of The Sith. After he was redeemed, he was terrified and renounced his connection to force, returning to his mercenary ways which is why he has nothing but blaster in the beginning of Jedi Outcast. He if anyone would not be disappointed because he knows the tremendous temptation of the dark side first hand.

Great video, but you focused heavily on single player and payed almost no attention to multiplayer, but the latter is truly what makes jka such an amazing game. First of all, there is an active game community which hosts events, does cooperative missions together, makes jka art etc. Second of all, the combat is really fun, complicated and has an insanely high skill cap, I mean you can play it for years and still stay a beginner. Other than that, I love the video, thanks for bringing attention to Jedi Academy!

    • @AnvilGaming
      @AnvilGaming  2 роки тому +26

      Thank you.
I did that for a few reasons.
      1) I didn't want to make this video too long.
      2) The popularity/population of the game is a verrrrry small fraction of what it used to be and most people in this age won't be interested in the multiplayer aspect.
I fully agree, the multiplayer made this a Perfect game. I used to play this game religiously during it's peak. I was even part of an Australian clan, used to be a trainer and was a mod as well. Unfortunately the game's population died off pretty hard a year or two after it's release. It is now extremely low and I've more or less moved on from the Multiplayer. Most, if not everyone won't ever get to experience the passion and community the game had during its peak. It truely was something special and once in a lifetime experience.
I still remember when JA+ was first announced and most/all servers switched to it. It was awesome, especially the customization.
I'm fully aware of Movie Battles and Movie Duels mods but haven't had the chance/time to try them out.
Fully agree on the skill cap. The game has the one of the most technically complex gameplay in existance. It was absolutely brutal playing on US servers with a ping of 250+ but i somehow managed and was quite skilled. Doing something as simple as "Lightsaber Fanning" was annoying because most hits wouldn't register at that ping.
Anyways, Jedi Academy was a massive part of my childhood and it's something i'll never forget. No problems! 👍

@@AnvilGaming true, the popularity is very low, the playerbase is around 400-500 players if not including movie battles, but the game has been evolving all these years community wise. I am talking about my clan Jedi of Freedom right now. We got around 180 active members and a pretty full server pretty much every day. What's the difference between playing League of Legends with millions of players and jka if you know just a few people from this huge playerbase in LoL? The rest is the same with the exception that you won't find players in the mornings. You can play with lots of different folks in jka in the afternoon, there are constant updates and changes to the game (eternaljk) and the clan, there are tournaments, a hundred different events from jousting and sieging with medieval swords and bows to tennis, MOBA, spaceship racing etc., you name it. To me it looks like jka is at its actual peak right now.

30:29 here's a lil tid bit you might have not noticed about force sense, basically no matter what level it is the ability will increase the accuracy of any weapon to 100%. 31:17 for mind trick there's actually 4 levels instead of 3, the 4th level allows you control any NPC (even jedi/sith characters), it more or less works like the mouse droid control section on Kejim in Jedi Outcast. However in order to get it to level 4 you gotta use setMindTrick 4 in console. Also in regards to saber styles, for the single bladed lightsaber there's 2 more additional styles that are exclusive to Tavion and Desann (he's reused from Outcast much like Jan and Lando but lacks any voicelines), just do addsaberstyle desann or tavion and gg ez

  • @tsunderemerc2963

JA is personally one of my favorite Star Wars games ever, next to Battlefront II (2005). I will say that nostalgia plays a large role in it, because I know it has several flaws. Lightsaber combat is great, even if later enemies are tougher, and guns get completely shafted because of it since saber users will block 95-100% of your shots. There are more linear levels than before (Though some are a bit less so, like Taspir, Vjun, and Korriban), which departs from the more exploration and puzzle-based map design of the older titles, so I rarely get lost, whereas Jedi Outcast had some head-scratching moments (even if one would call it an outdated level design). The story is definitely a lot weaker until you near the finale, even if i think the more episodic level narratives had their own merit. As a kid, it was like playing through a Saturday morning cartoon, where there were little bite-sized adventures, with a larger plot surfacing now and then. As an adult, I see it more as an epilogue to Kyle's story, rather than a whole new one (since you're his apprentice, and it ties up Tavion), which I don't think is entirely bad. Yeah, a cult trying to ressurect an evil Sith ghost sounds wierd, but I like it because of how a lot of Legends content operated up to that time. Jaden's novels (Crosscurrent and Riptide) are just as wierd, with evil Sith clones and more. I think JA and JO stand on equal footing, and it depends whether you want the more story driven JO or the more mechanics and adventure driven JA. Multiplayer is definitely a highlight of the game because of these mechanics, and that's why it has a cult following to this day, with mods still in development like Movie Battles/Movie Duels. I've played the game for years and I'm still not very good against other players because of the high skill cap. Personally I had an odd love for Capture the Flag.
tldr; I wouldn't quite agree that Jedi Academy is a perfect game, it has plenty of flaws, but it's still a high entry in terms of Star Wars titles. (also yeah Rosh is annoying but he's kinda supposed to be, even in a very cheesy and obvious way). Other games have better stories, but mechanically the game is very strong.

The fighting in singleplayer is heavily gimped due to the fact that the later enemies' AI blocks and dodges everything to such an extent you literally have to cheese it with guard crushing attacks or goomba stomping and then getting in as many hits as possible while the bastards are down. It's why the dark side final boss might be my favorite one ever - he's got his own load of bullshit, sure, but he isn't perfectky blocking and dodging everything you throw out, which makes for some absolutely thrilling duels.

You really mentioned something there: unneccessary grind! I think it is because in theearly 2000s they measured how many units were sold. Now a days they also measure how many minutes you spend inside the game (as all games require a connection to the internet) so they can tell the executes "Look how many active players we have!" I miss the simpler times!

Jedi Academy is one of my favorite games, and in my opinion it has the best melee combat in games so far, but the Force powers are not too impressive. Remedy's CONTROL has the best telekinesis so far in my opinion. And fighting against humanoid gunners is not much fun, it should be like in Metal Gear Rising, where human gunners are cannon fodder and the main threats are robots and sword wielder cyborgs. In Jedi Academy the main threats would be military vehicles, robots and Force users with lightsabers.

Could be even implemented as open world RPG or game with RPG-like features where you could return to any previous planet whenever you feel the desire to do so with mercenary stuff, such as bounty hunting, being one of Kyles primary means of earning credits. (Of course assassinations, thefts, extortions, gangster stuff and other unethical things would not be recommended if you want a light side ending). Hope Disney could consider doing that. Would also love larger selection of weapons such as Rebel Alliance rifle and/or old clone trooper issue rifle that would be good against both, organic AND droidic enemies (some weapons you could not scavenge but have to purchase with credits because killing friendlies would not be recommended) and also opportunity to turn your light saber red if you choose dark side.

15:18 Amen to that. When I was playing Hogwarts Legacy I was not liking the game, I was comparing it to PC Harry Potter 1 and 2... for a reason I couldn't understand, even though they were reaally basic games, they caught the magic of Hogwarts much better... then I realised it was the exploration. In the 2000s game you could explore and had to figure things out, Hogwarts main charm is to look for passages, secrets... In the older games you had to try using your wand in every object, never knew which one would open a passage. You felt like one of the characters of the book, expierencing the castle magic. What about Hogwarts Legacy? Interactive objects and passages shine 🤣
I think that sums up modern game development, apart from exceptions. Because they target the broader audience, not usual gamers who know how mechanics work... and thus, they think regular people won't be able to figure it out. It's cheap. It's a lack of respect for the players intelligence.

Academy seemed to have less of a "plot". DF had a plot; DF2 had a better plot; Outcast had a plot somewhere between the previous two, as well as the fact that the live-action cutscenes were replaced with game-engine cutscenes, and that diminished the plot. Academy had micro-levels, some of which were tedious - they felt like disconnected distractions from the main plot.
In the film world, a producer has a limited budget. It can be spent on top-shelf actors, or top-shelf screenwriting, or special effects, or locations. A good film will balance these. Academy seemed to spend its $$$ on addressing the "failures" (i.e., the criticisms) of Outcast, and therefore didn't really create anything new and exciting.

Jedi Academy single player playthrough was better than JK2
Jedi Knight II single player lore is better than JKA
Jedi Knight II Multiplayer was better than JKA (against popular opinion its a fact because of the poke abuse in JKA)
Jedi Academy was actually rushed, if you look at the release times apart. JKA was built off the back, blood, sweat and tears of JK2.
Jedi Knight 2 is the dominant game but the community was always split between versions 1.02 and 1.04.
Very good video and homage to the series, thanks enjoyed it and I obviously prefer the JK2 start screen and music =P

It wasn’t really a retcon tbh, even back in the EU the Death Star plans were stolen in three different stories by different people. They tied it together by saying each group stole a different part of the blueprints which then combined together. Rogue One can totally fit in with that in new canon. Plus it’s a great movie.

I actually i think Outcast is a stronger game based on its story. I still play both but while JA had some great maps, the rest of them are repetitive - the flying train where you clean out gangsters and bad jedi from car ro car, the speeder bike level where you take out enemies, bike to bike, the one where you have to find and deactivate bombs (2 of those, actually) and a mission on an imperial cruiser thats a fall back to the basics of FPS gaming - go from A to B, and kill anyone in your way. The levels don't build on each other the way Outcast does (navigate the inner areas of Cloud City to reach tha Cairn Shuttle; fight through Cairn to reach Doomgiver), probably so the game can be more episodic. I end up skipping most of those to get to Vijun and Taspir, the best levels of the game.

Tbh I prefer it when characters like this don’t get a ‘canon’ gender or look since the whole basis is to roleplay, unlike characters like Kyle, but I’m also intrigued about this. I wanna know why Jaden already has a saber and is already proficient enough to duel and kill a cultist/reborn before even beginning training.

I enjoyed it as a kid & just tried replaying it & it’s a solid game but definitely overhyped by fans. The third act is easily the best part but getting there is kind of a drag. It definitely felt lower budget compared to Kotor. The saber combat, while fun, is not mind-blowing or anything. Mostly just wobbling the joystick around & it looks goofy in-game.
Kotors customization is way better idk why you tried saying this one outshines it. Yeah Kotor has fewer starting outfits but that’s because there’s wayyy more to acquire as the game goes along, whereas academy is limited to what you get at the beginning. Kotor has way more options overall.
The story is literally just there for the player to have something to do. It’s goofy & not gripping by any means & the dialogue is very janky. Overall, it’s a solid, fun little game but by no means anywhere near masterpiece or “perfect Star Wars game” 😂 imo

In the last weeks, I spent a lot of time with Knights of the old Republic 1 and 2. In a discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of using two lightsabers at the same time instead of a single one, many people said that using 2 completely destroys immersion.
    What's your opinion on this?
(Personally, I understand where they are coming from, but I still use two-weapon fighting in most games for different reasons.)

    • @AnvilGaming
      @AnvilGaming  2 роки тому +4

_Using 2 completely destroys immersion_ is one of the most stupidest statements I've heard within Star Wars. So, using the force to wipe someones mind is somehow perfectly immersive?
I've had similar discussions on the same topic and Dual-wielding is perfectly valid.
      - Lightsabers don't weigh that much.
      - The Sabers only need to make contact with the body to do damage. The only time you need to apply additional strength is when you're in a Saber lock/Parry.
      - Generally, a Dual-wield user is going to be a Blademaster who focus on using the force to enhance their combat abilities/strength instead of throwing out Lightning or Telekinetic blasts.
      - The only downside is that you forgo alot of Precision. By having two hands on one weapon, you can do more precise attacks, strike harder and deflect stronger attacks since you're using both hands. Plus you can enhance your strength further with the force.

      Thanks!
The biggest advantage of using and mastering two weapons might be that it is an uncommon style which should be difficult to counter. Sadly, this was never really shown in any of the star wars media which I saw.

Two sabers are superior to one saber in deflecting blasters, which is one of the main uses of the lightsaber. But the ideal would be a lightshield, a ranged weapon and two lightsabers, one main and one backup.
