- Hello Skaters! Today I am going to try and explain the difference between 4 of the figure skating turns... Three Turns, Brackets, Counters and Rockers. They can be pretty confusing to understand, so I hope my this video helps you understand, as you learn the 32 different versions of these turns!

Coach Julia has been skating (first on roller and then on ice) for over 30 years. She was a competitive skater until she turned 21 when she got her first contract as a professional show skater. Julia has been a figure skating coach for 16 years, is a USFS Gold Medalist in Moves in the Field, and an ISI Gold Level certified judge. She has held positions as the Skating Director of the largest skating program in the United States, as well as Head Coach at two different skating clubs. Julia has now turned her skills towards a larger audience and is bringing her love and knowledge of skating to all of you!
Thanks to the useful tutorial, I can still do the turns after 30 years but forgot the names 😂😂
Happy to help!
Love these videos! You’re so good at explaining stuff. Would love to see a video about the “finesse” of posture and lines? I can do most of the MITF and jump all the singles but my choppy and robotic looking back crossovers still give me away as someone who started skating recently as an adult.
Great suggestion!
Yay! Rockers and counters have arrived on Coach Julia! Sometimes when i do a bracket, i get a countrr by accident! 😅 I hope it still looks nice.
Lol, yeah, accidental turn improvisations happen all the time. 😆
Thank you do much! I have so much fun ahead of me. So far I'm fluent with inside and outside forward to backwards 3 turns. I feel I'm gonna have a blast with counters and rockers.
Julia the zooming in... featuring bullet explaination of each element and video graphing clarity is much appreciated by me, an adult skater . I cannot thank you enough how I have evolved thanks to you! ⛸xx
Thank you so much!! I am glad I can help your skating knowledge improve!
Very interesting! Im on 3 turns now .. at the wall still haha
So I started inside threes a few weeks ago and I’m having trouble switching edges, I’m accidentally doing a rocker, I go inside to inside lol. Any tips?
Same here! My bracket couldn't be bracket
Have you watched my tutorial about Inside Three Turns?
Thank you. I’m only at 3 turns and brackets right now. But now I know what to expect in the coming months.
With that said, I do have an emergency Q; for the 6 jumps, which ones have back spins for their rotations, and which ones have forward spins? My main problem is the toe-loop. I’ve been going through your videos and other resources, but can’t get a definitive answer on whether the toe-loop uses the back spin or not.
Excellent question. The single Salchow and Single Toe loop don't really feel like they have a back spin rotation, but in fact all the jumps rotate like a back spin. It is especially noticeable once you do multiple rotations in a jump. I will answer this in more detail in a future Q&A video! I have the question noted to answer!
@@CoachJulia oh no…I thought my salchows were almost there. I’ll have to rebuild it with the back spin for doubles. (Hopefully I have enough in the tank for doubles) I’m glad that I asked though.
Thanks Julia. This is very helpful. I have so much to practice and learn!! I've been rehabbing a knee but hoping to be back on the ice this week:)
I hope you have a speedy recovery!!
Of all the explanations about these turns and how to tell them apart, yours is the easiest for me to understand and remember. Thank you!
Can I practice these on rollerblades? :) Thanks! But I will also practice on ice, just wanted to ask :) thank you!
Thank you very much
You are welcome
I am enjoying any drills, skills, and modifications you can give. Group lessons seem to go through a required progression bypassing that. I may be at 4-6 level forever, but hopefully I can still increase skills. Thanks!
This was so helpful! Thanks for the drawings on the ice and the bulleted differences at the end!
Glad it was helpful!
I really want to thank you for your video.
Kind Regards. From México 🌎💌😀❄
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing! I was wondering about this.
Glad it was helpful!
As I have said before, the value of your coaching through these tutorials is absolutely invaluable. Thanks again Julia. I am starting back to skating in the Fall / Winter sessions at my rink here in Toronto, and I am so grateful for your videos. While I am here I wonder if you can address the differences between a 7' and 8 ' rocker. I have just switched to and 8' and and wondering how much this might affect turns? Thanks so much. Take care.
Thanks for the positive feedback! I will create a whole video about blades this fall for you!
With counters do we start face away from the starting circle both going forwards and backwards ?
Thank you for this, I do have a question tho. When I’m doing a 3 turn, when I Push off my right to go left I’m perfectly fine but when I push off my left to go right I end up dropping my foot as I’m about to turn.
I would love to be able to answer this, unfortunately without seeing what your body is doing, I can't really help diagnose the problem. Perhaps you can send me a video link.
You're really amazing with explaining all this. Skating for my second time in a week after a 20 year hiatus, I think I was able to figure out the Mohawk turn!
This helped me a lot!a
I am glad to hear that!
Bookmarked for future reference :)
Perfect!
You explained very well. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you very much!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
You're welcome!
Wow great explanation! I don’t gate these turns anymore 🤣 they’re actually fun
Thank you Julia! ❤ Your explanation has helped me a lot, it is very difficult for me to change direction with only one foot, I appreciate if you have more tips
Thanks. Was practicing the turns on weekend. ❤
I predict a future footwork challenge using all of these turns....! 😉
Started learning outside brackets this week in LTS. I prefer insides...!
Hmm, that sound like a great plan Jenn! Thanks for the idea. lol
This was so helpful! Seeing the shapes drawn out was great as well! Thanks for another great video :)
I am glad you found it helpful!
This is the best explanation I’ve found! Can’t wait to get on the ice now 😉
Thank you so much!!
This has been crystal clear. Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Very helpful. Thank you
