Thank you so so so much for these videos!! I'm a Taína body artist who's been trying to find more information about my pre-colombian ancestors and how they lived and decorated their bodies and I'm so happy I found this! I also appreciate all the resources you put and am looking forward to seeing the rest of your videos!
Are you a tattoo artist?
Thankyou so much for making these videos !
Dak'toka naboría. (I'm at your service.) I'm so glad you enjoyed this miniseries. 🥰
This is awesome thank you for this series!!! Do you think gourds were used for our face masks as well? I know some cultures used gourds for masks and since we used them as urns, water bottles, instruments, and dishes it would make sense if they were used as masks as well.
Jajóm (thank you) for you support! And what a great question and theory. I wouldn't doubt that gourds were used, too. I haven't found too much on gourds since they would've degraded quickly in the tropical heat. Thank you again for sharing. I love the idea so much. Bo-guatukán! (Many blessings!)
I love your channel!!! Thank you so much for teaching me about my culture, I feel a part of me being restored when I watch your videos 💗
Jajóm (thank you)! It is a true pleasure to serve my community in this way. Your words mean the world to me because I'm on a healing journey too. I feel it in my body with every video I make, and it moves to tears to hear that you're feeling restored as well. Bo-guatukán (many blessings)💜
I love your context I just wish the Dominican Republic start doing the same in Spanish, for all Dominican to learn our anscestor language.
Jajóm (thank you) so much for your support. It brings me so much joy to get comments like yours and know that I'm reaching people. In the meantime, I've been creating the content in Spanish, too. You can go to the Casa Areyto channel home page and click the playlist "Let's Talk Taíno en español". I'm also working on a free online language learning course that I hope to publish maybe next year and will be available to everyone around the world for free. Bo-guatukán! (Many blessings!) 💜
Finally came back to this page! I missed it so much :)
Awww! Well, I'm glad to have you back. 💜
I have learned so much from your videos thank you I am trying to get facial tattoo in honor of my Great- Grandmother and Grandmother because they were not allowed to practice their clan or tribe paints because of fear of persecution
What a beautiful way to remember your ancestors. I would love to see it when you get it done. Thank you for ongoing support. It brings me joy that others are finding the videos helpful and learning. Bo-guatukán! (Many blessings!) 💜
Tai karaya guaytiao
Just so you know
I loved this video and all and I appreciate the hard work that goes with it…with that said, I would like to tell a story about the origins of the word “Jagua”
As I mentioned before I exist or reside between 3 completely different worlds, I grew up in Borikén and now I live between Florida USA and Rio de Janeiro,Brazil.
During my travels to Brazil I had the privilege to encounter some traveling indigenous people from Bolivia whom were visiting their family members in our hometown in Brazil.
These people were “Tupi-Guaraní”
I’m sure you’re familiar with them.
I was so intrigued with the colorful temporary tattoos on this cute older “Guaraní Madden” that I could not stop starting at her, she was about 4 feet tall and about 70 years young and so in the Português language she asked me
“você tá achando alguma coisa maluquinha na minha pele? Ou se tá ficando tontinho por causa da minha beleza natural”
Which means
“are you finding crazy things on my skin?
Or are you turning crazy because of my natural beauty?”
😂😂 sorry just keep reading,I’ll make it quick! 🤙🏽
So what happened was that I loved her tattoos and I asked her about them, what kind of dye or tint was that, what did they symbolize etc.
So she mentioned the word “jagua” and that’s when I said “I know that word” and after 2 hours talking and asking questions…I found out about the origins of most words that I even thought where of Taíno origin.
Anyway, 100% sure that the word “Jagua” is a Guaraní word which actually it also means “Dog” in Guaraní.
Just like “Jaguar”is also Guaraní word.
Not An “Aztec” word
Because the “Jagua” tree was transported north to just south Mexico regent later on after the name was given to it.
Tai Karaya!
Oh by the way!
The Guaraní always travel to big and busy super populated cities with lots of tourist to sale their crafts, but be aware that some of them get lazy and buy items from Indonesia or other places and sale them as their own.🤙🏽
Awww such a beautiful 🥰 story. I love it!!! Thank you for sharing.
@@luzrivera1353 well thank you 🙏 so much Luz!
For taking your time to read it and comment!
Boa noite!
So wonderful to hear about your interactions with our Guaraní-speaking cousins. I wish I could see what her design looked like; it must've been impressive. So it must be that jágua is used by most Indigenous people in South America, not just Taíno and Nahuatl. The reason I mentioned Nahuatl is because that's how the word got into the Spanish language. But you're right that it doesn't mean that it originated there. Since it's used in tribes in Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, and more, it must be a common word throughout. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Bo-guatukán, guaitiáo! (Many blessings, friend!) 🥰
@@CasaAreyto thank you 🙏 again for the reply!
I enjoy your videos sooo very much and I hope you don’t think that I’m trying to be a “Know it all”
My apologies if I came across in that manner.
So you just mentioned that you would like to see the design on the “Guaraní Elderly Woman”
I’m so disappointed on my self for two things.
One- I should have come up with an excuse to take not only her photo but also the other younger woman in the group.
Two-Even though I was aware of some of them selling stuff that they bought from other countries,(but it’s not all of them) I should have bought something and then ask if they would mind if I take a selfie with them…and of course I would have given them some money but they might have gotten offended so I did not even try.
But this coming December it’s time to get back there and be with my Wife for Christmas and new year’s and Valentine’s Day and Three King’s day and all that good stuff!
Oh Yessssss!
In Brazil 🇧🇷 they celebrate 3 kings day on January 6 just like we do.
Ok so, this time I for sure if I see them again I will take many selfies with them even if I have to pay big money!😁
Oh wait!
I just noticed I use the word “Even” a few times here.
I don’t know if you are aware of this but out there in “Eastern Siberia” the indigenous people from that region are in fact “The Even”
It’s spells just like that and they speak a “Tongusic” language.
Sorry about that!
Now for sure you’re going to think 🤔 of me as a know it all.
🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🙄🙄☹️
@@willysoto8781 Tau Willy 👋 I absolutely love that you're sharing so much information. 🥰 And no, it's not bothersome. I'm here to share and learn from all of you. Yes, please next time you are in Brazil, take a selfie with them. 😁 Oh, I know nothing of the Indigenous people of Eastern Siberia. That is so cool that you do! How did you learn about them? Did you travel to the area or study their language? I believe that genetically speaking, as Indigenous Americans, we have a lot in common with Siberian people. I was reading 1491 by Charles Mann, where he talked about the genetics of Indigenous Americans and how approx. 90% of our population could've been wiped out by European viruses. He sites recent studies done on Indigenous people in the Russian region. Super interesting read. In the meantime, thank you for your ongoing support. 💜
I wish I could find amulet and pendant🇵🇷🇵🇷
What of the fact that all 3 oviedo, Casas and columbo observed tattoos or "tatuaje" amongst the native people's. The process was even described as pricking the skin with a thorn then allowing inks to sink in? Even named one specific as called "cueit" that was a line or circle above the brows between the eyes as a symbol of spiritual sight. They also recounted taino having geometric symbols and petroglyph on the fore head, cheeks, chin, arms, chest, and legs.
Most versions including the Seville, France, and Madrid versions of Historia General Y Natural de Las Indias have very detailed account but all versions contain these passages. Other writtings of early explorations of the are also provided description noting as oviedo and Casas did that only black and red ink were used and made from soot and red ochre.
I was in the store today and saw a product that have the word Yaya thanks to these lessons I realize that was Taino
Wow, that is amazing! Yes, Yáya is a powerful name. You also see it in another languages, such as Gaia (Mother Earth or creator spirit). I believe it's from a shared knowledge that we humans have forgotten, but are slowly starting to recover. 💜
The "tattoos" also reflect the non-permanence in the nature of reality. ^-^
I love these videos.
Jan-jan! (Yes!) Jajóm (thank you) for your support. It means the world to me. 🥰
Shell is caracol.. from caracaracol the being that could grab slippery women..

Dak'toká naboría. (I am at your service.) 🥰
I was hoping to find more on the face painting. Like everyday designs versus designs that symbolized status, marriage, or mourning. I've seen the lines on the chin being symbolized as "warrior", but noticed many different native people use that. Don't even know where that originated from.
However I enjoyed watching this, it was helpful connecting back to my ancestors from the diaspora.
Thank you for writing! I hear you. It's hard to get more detailed information when we're relying on texts written by Europeans. 😢There are some theories that body art was used to distinguish the clans. Given that our ancestors were matrilineal (tracing their families through their mothers' lines), it's no wonder that patriarchal Europeans wouldn't understand or care about documenting any of that, from family lineages to how the ways in which they distinguished themselves. We may never know more, but we can begin recreating things for ourselves. We are anything if not creative. 😉 Jajóm (thank you) for your support in the meantime. 💜
