Perfect thanks Julian, I've just realised that this is exactly what I've been doing. I've been protecting my right shoulder joint which has now been replaced !

Thanks Julian for the advice, pre setting the right elbow at address has really help me improve my shots, with all clubs.

Thanks Julian. Came on one of your tuition days a couple of years ago but my flying elbow had made a come back. Just back from driving range and par 3 course after watching this video and this move worked a treat. I live in The Netherlands now so a bit of a trek to come on another golf tuition day. But I can highly recommend them, ( hopefully you still do them ).

This is definitely one issue that creeps into the swing occasionally when trying to “bomb” it out there. I will practice this move until it becomes routine in my setup. Now all I have to do is convince myself to reduce my power to 75 % for better contact. The comment from my playing partner is that I am playing more fairways and losing less balls since adopting you teachings. I wish that I had learned your method 40 years ago! Thanks so much.👍🇨🇦

Excellent suggestion on the right elbow Julian! I pay more attention to the right elbow now than I ever have. As you suggested, I try to point it down to the right hip. I know that if it comes away from my side, I'm in trouble with an over the top move or a pull shot! On the downswing, I let it unfold naturally.

It really helps as long as you don’t tighten up too much

Does this apply to the left elbow as well- should the left elbow be pointed at the left hip like the right?

Julian, I’m with you on this, but I have extensively studied Jack Nicklaus’s swing over the years. That flying right elbow was always his signature move, and at age 80 he still does it today. I think the position of his right elbow at the top is simply the result of a more vertical swing - would you agree with that? From about halfway back, Jack simply lifted the club straight up, which anatomically gives the appearance of a “flying right elbow.” I personally think there’s some merit to that if a fade is your preferred ball flight. Any thoughts?

Great observations Larry, but we must remember that Jack is one of the best golfers to every play golf and he managed his swing and game like no other, in my years of coaching golfers very few have ever been really successful when their elbow flys too much, consistently it’s better if the elbow is down at the top of the swing as it enables golfers to hit the inside of the ball much easier.

Well said, Julian, and I agree. But if you’re a chronic hooker of the golf ball, like I have been for 65 years, there is some merit to experimenting with a little more vertical swing and allowing the right elbow to fly out just a bit if it wants to. There is such a thing as coming too much from the inside and flipping it through impact, and if you suffer from that affliction, trying a more vertical swing like Jack’s certainly can’t hurt anything.
Thanks for all your great videos; I’m 76 and have learned a lot just watching you swing the golf club. Getting old has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, and the golf swing is one of its worst victims. But hey, we’re still looking down at the daisies instead of up at them…right? 👍

It just isn't Jack..Raymond Floyd...Tom Watson...Freddie Couples...Bubba Watson...Mathew Wolf...John Daly ect all have flying right elbows. One thing they all have is they all are and were pretty long hitters...maybe minus Floyd. The right elbow flying can be good for certain people...I know me personally if I don't let my right elbow fly and keep it pinned down I get to flat in the backswing and get over the top. It's all about match ups imo.
