TRAIL ELBOW LEADS THE WAY TO MORE DISTANCE IN THE GOLF SWING

  • How does the trail elbow lead the way to more distance in the golf swing? How does the right elbow work in the downswing and the backswing in order to create better ball striking and additional power?
This has been a popular question on my golf videos. Their are a number of right elbow downswing drills here on UA-cam and I think this weeks golf tip is right up there as one of the most simplest and easiest to achieve a perfect impact position with the trail elbow flexed at impact.

    ABOUT DANNY
    -----------------------
Thanks for stopping by. I created this website as a resource just for you to support you on your golfing journey as I know how tricky learning this game can be…to say the least!
I personally found learning the game too long and difficult in the early days. I read all the books, watched all the videos but my game was not improving. Then after studying various forms of neuro science, motor learning, psychology and personal development in less than two years I went from struggling golfer to the final stage of the Open Championship.
On UA-cam and my personal website (www.dannymaude.com) I will bring you the most up to date training, training that is getting tangible results for my clients right now. I don’t know where you are in your golfing journey, you could be just starting out or maybe your body isn’t as flexible as it once was or you’ve got ambitions to slash your handicap. Wherever you are I’ve created a place here you can learn, share your ideas, ask questions and get all the support you need to enjoy this great game.
Be prepared though. If its a quick fix you are after Im not your man. Here I will give you step-by-step advice that you can take straight to the practice ground and apply to the course but it will require you to get stuck in, screw up…a lot, practice some more and then watch those scores tumble
I’ve had the pleasure of coaching thousands of students all around the world and if you are up for the challenge and are ready to get in the game…LETS GO TO WORK!

Really appreciate you pointing out swing thoughts for a right handed person playing left. It is completely unnatural for me to throw anything with my left hand, but play left handed. I’m also one who gets tense through release, so it was helpful to hear your comments there

Danny, a good 'un! A great reminder to not fixate on the ball and the strike. Rather, to visualize the shape of the shot and the target down the fairway and swing through the ball with the bent arm throwing motion. How simple but profound. Thanks.

Newt Holloway the key is that you can already do this. It’s just a matter of learning to be aware of how you do it when you throw

This is an Excellent video explanation Danny of the role and function of the Trail Elbow and a Great Drill to train the correct move. When I took this idea to the course I just focused on 'keeping my trail elbow in front of my trail hip'. To start with it felt a bit awkward but as the round progressed it began to feel easier. However, the quality of my ball striking was taken to just another level, and one I hadn't experienced before. Drives going 280+, irons going easily two clubs further, making par 5's in two, it felt incredible. Thanks.

This is an easy motion for a person who played baseball--especially an infielder who would have to use this motion for a throw to first or second base--or even home plate! The problem for a guy in my generation (old) is that the motion is seldom used during the aging process. My solution for the past four months is to do wrist curls with both hands (one at a time) every day with up to 25 pounds. It is amazing how strong I have gotten and am now able to perform this motion and most importantly, in my golf swing. Love these videos! As another person commented: "they are good but they require a great deal of practice!"

Danny pure genius! This is a natural golf swing, we are not programmed as humans to get the body of all the “positions” that most instructors want to teach, the human body is a wonderful machine that knows what to do if we let the central nervous system to operate. If we know the target the brain will automatically engage and the body will react naturally to the task, no need for swing thoughts crowding our mind. Thanks so much for great videos.

It’s clear to me that golf is all about “cause and effect” . All my golf lessons seem to be focused on effect and not cause.i.e. “You need to work on finishing your swing.” Well theres obviously many things I’m not doing that is preventing my finish. I.e not properly using my trail elbow?? The example you demo’d of how we don’t engage our elbow is exactly what I do!! But even that move is probably linked to my improper take away! Thanks for demonstrating cause and drills that help us comprehend what it should feel like!

Danny, consider this. If you are a baseball pitcher throwing sidearm, your action would look like your trail arm in the downswing. BUT, if you were in left field throwing to home plate your arm action would be quite different. Your trail “throwing” arm would be just the opposite. Breaking the habits learned in the outfield are hard to break, but have to be learned to play good golf. I’m a big fan of your instructional videos.

Hi Danny , a great video and analogy in how to get that power from trail arm and what may be the cause of not letting it flow/throw freely in that motion. It made me think what may be my hold up in doing that as well in ,just letting that "throw go" in a relaxed full swing and through motion . It reminded me of another of your videos where i thought of the correlation in apprehension in the swing went hand in hand in what you mentioned in that video as well . The subject of your other video was "hitting ground behind the ball" and correcting that. You touched on one major thing for me that i think has the same reason that creates same problem for me here with trail elbow subject . NOT moving your head/eyes down and keeping so focused on hitting the ball /making contact, = head down , eye on the ball and not wanting to miss that shot that we just get into that overly rigid stiff swing with focus on 'keeping the eye on the ball " so much so, that it inhibits us from getting that power from the trail arm and a great free flowing follow through and that "PUNCH" POWER into the shot that you talk about here . The other video for folks who may not have seen it yet on how to stop hitting ground behind the ball (starting at spot where you discuss that over focus/ stiffness head down) ,creating that creates that stiff mechanical swing causing so many issues in getting stuck in this mode .
ua-cam.com/video/DHZ1zY612_M/v-deo.html For me that fault of getting so overly focused on keeping the eyes and head down on the ball can be a huge problem in many aspects of a good overall powerful swing. Just getting stuck in doing this and keeping the head eyes down in this manner can inhibit my swing in several ways, and definitely not getting this power throwing motion fits into that head down problem , i immediately recalled you discussing this exact problem in the other video and it just clicked !! Thanks for the pointers that will help correct the problem with this issue and achieve that power punch for distance and just "letting it go" !! Great info for me to help correct an issue i have in several area you discuss! !! Sean

Really good advice Danny, I recently came back around to Golf after giving up years ago out of sheer frustration with the swing mechanics and technique.

I love the way you describe and break down the golf swing.. I’ve been working on my swing all through winter and I’m still sometimes guilty of bringing my back elbow down in a singular movement rather than that smooth follow through you’ve just described..My game is good if not perfect but definitely going in the right direction 👍
