      +Misha Mansoor Why don't you collab with Tigran? His songs are really heavy, that could be made djent. Listen to 'Entertain Me' for example. This is pretty heavy too and sounds like Meshuggah at times, like at 4:30.

      +Satyam Bhardwaj im sure misha's heard a lot if not all of tigran's music. but idk about a collab, the styles are verrrryyyyy different

      +Octavian Malcolm Different styles when fused can sometimes lead to amazing results. Depends upon the musicians who are doing so... how flexible they are in their approach.

    I performed this at my recital two weeks ago, and it was by far the highlight of my setlist!
    It started out as a transcription I made of this exact performance and ended up being played entirely live by me and my friends.
    It was especially cool considering that it was a classical percussion recital, so you can imagine what a move-out-of-left-field was bringing 2 pianists (one played the synth parts) and a bassist for this was, I was really happy with the result.
    Tigran was supposed to do a show, along with his trio including Hnatek on the day of the recital - but sadly they canceled due to Tigran catching covid. This has also led to the canceling of the masterclass with Arthur which is a real shame (they somehow convinced him to do one the day before), hope they do a round 2 in Israel real soon!

    If you guys haven't already, the album which this tune is off, "Mockroot", by Tigran Hamasyan, is essential listening. Arthur's playing on the album, as evidenced by this video, is meticulous and tight (as the music demands).

      +Harry D. What Martin means by "don't be surprised when a bunch of butthurt people reply to your comment" is that well that "djenty-progy" sound came from jazz and endless experimentation with rhythm time and melody. Though this sounds more on the side of metal especially toward the end, so rad! Gives me Between The Buried And Me vibes.

      You should explore Tigran's music more. He may not be for everyone's taste, but don't be mistaken. What is incredible about him is that he will churn out mind-blowing rhythm and heavy beats but then drop into beautiful armenian melodic harmony. He is neither technical masturbation devoid of feeling, nor is he too loose and purely emotional. The man's found a balance in between unlike any musician I can think of. I suggest Kars, Apple Orchard in Saghmosavanq, What the Waves Brought, Luys I Luso and Road Song as great listens to get a sense of how powerful, original, and diverse his music is.
      Live performances are even more incredible.

      Learned enough to get through it, but my friend had to cover exams for another student (thus rendering barely any time for practice). The songs were scrapped from the exam and we were both very sad...
      Covid utterly destroyed any chance of performing my personal exam, which definitively shattered a lot of my inspiration and dedication to music for a while. I had been working for so long, so seeing it all fall apart was quite disheartening.

    • @nram3930
      @nram3930 4 роки тому

      @Caleb I mean yeah but no. It's (at least the way I transcribed it) in alternating 17 and 15 16th notes, which while does compile up to 4/4 would be complete nonsense.
      The time signatures are there for a reason, it is not meant to be perceived in 4/4 (much like Vardavar). At most I could see an argument that this in 8/4, which is true but wildly misguides our perception of where the "on" and "off" beats are. You might say this is a two-bar phrase, which would be quite weird as it is so heavily asymmetrical that it becomes very cumbersome to try and count 4/4 over these nasty (extremely awesome) rhythms.

    • @nram3930
      @nram3930 4 роки тому

      @Caleb, I learned it as well!
      It was very fun to transcribe and work out everything Hnatek does in this piece and try and arrange for a smaller kit (I don't have a million stacks and crashes :p ).
      By the way, it is never too late for musical discourse - and I would love for you to further articulate your opinion as to why this is 4/4.
      Considering I took my time and effort to write out a proper response, I would expect a similar effort from you - given that you are trying to dismiss me for some unknown reason.
      Honestly, I don't know if you are just trolling but do feel free to respond.

      @Caleb well to me it seems cumbersome to count in a polyrhythmic manner over an already polyrhythmic piece with that reoccurring 5 against 3, but it obviously can be done. So do you just memorize the accents and play them on top of the 4/4?

    • @nram3930
      @nram3930 4 роки тому

      @Caleb for the record I don't count 5,5,3,5,5,4,5 but rather long, long, short, long, long, medium, long. And practice the length difference between them. Same goes here, I feel this more along the lines of an altered 7/8 and 6/8 rather then 17/16 and 15/16, where there it goes short, short, long, short, short, short.

    • @nram3930
      @nram3930 4 роки тому

      @Caleb well allow me to introduce you to Bulgarian folk music! Where beats are never counted...
      This concept is one Tigran himself and by extension Arthur utilize in Vardavar as well, modulating parts of the rythem while keeping the overall short - medium - long concept...
      (For example going from 2-2-3 to 3-3-4 to 5-5-7).
      The point is to avoid having to rely on a non existent pulse, and instead play with the pulse of the music - of course I still count the difference between the beats, as you say a percussionist needs to be accurate.
      Although I do believe that treating the beats as long and short is anything but immature. Perhaps it seems irrational to you, but especially when soloing over this piece, it is far more fluid to utilize this method of counting.
      Will I suddenly go full poly and play the 4/4 beat? Frick yeah it sounds awesome. Playing the triplets lead to some mind bending results, especially if go and metrically modulate to the pulse of the triplet.
      But over the actual song it is my preference to think about it in the light of 17/16 and 15/16.

      +heinzie5 Personally trying to grasp the style... I don't usually understand / love dearly the crazy time signature because it's crazy hard to groove to. I appreciate the skill and brain required but it's tough to enjoy for me. But I agree. If this is the drumming style, up the energy by like 100 and bring in the guitars

      what... Go listen to Animals as Leader's new album, Plini, Pomegranate Tiger, Chon, Scale the Summit. those are all bands that have practically perfected the metal/jazz fusion.

      I agree, Jazz Metal is not a thing...but this is not jazz metal. It's it's own genre, as are many other bands. If you don't like it because you think it's hard to groove to, cool. Not Everything has to be as groovy as Benny Greb. Basically everything in these songs have a very repetitive pattern that i can pick out and love to see manipulated. Don't tell this band how to improve cause clearly they're doing fine without you (while it IS okay to state a negative opinion (there's a difference). Keep it smart UA-cam community! :)

    I hate the cookie cutter crap that is so popular in drumming. Either it's put the drummer in a box of zero creativity, with no give and take, or its how fast is your blast speed, or how funky can you play along to the music without actually doing anything different to advance the music to a higher level. Drumming hasn't advanced or contributed to the music in decades. It just sits behind like they say it's supposed to.

      I know exactly what youre talking about. best example of a band where the drums are a layer in the music by itself is the new stuff by opeth (heritage, pale communion)

      +adam brown I totally agree. I always end up going back to watching all my drumming videos and DVDs from the 90s and 2000s, where "less is more" was still in vogue but drummers en masse were really starting to push the boundaries and find ways to be creative and think outside the box.
      These days though, everything is four-on-the-floor or blast beats. Don't get me wrong, I love a good blast beat, and I'm a big fan of Nile and Fleshgod Apocalypse, but guys like Virgil Donati, Dave Weckl, Mike Portnoy and Jason Rullo have been my biggest influences for years and will probably be for years to come.

      +seth kukel excuse me? first you should know that you should not even name him ;) and second I don't know where you see similarities with Steve..two genres and styles completely different IMHO. Two style that you cannot even compare (always IMHO)

    • @AquaAnim
      @AquaAnim 8 років тому

      +Andrea Marangoni The style of drumming isn't what makes something original. Arthur is a unique, and original drummer because everyone is different and plays things their own way. You are an original drummer, just because you're not shattering the mold on the drumming scene, does not make you un-original. He phrases different than every drummer, his dynamic control in acoustic settings is very amazing to watch, his thought process that goes into matching Tigran's hits on the piano to a drum piece, without overwhelming Tigran requires a different way of thinking. If you open your ears enough to truly listen, you will find things unique, and original in almost everyones playing. Listening, is the key, and while you may not find he is original, I have found many things that say otherwise. I am sure I would find things original about your playing if i watched you, I always look for the interesting, and positive things in someones playing, makes listening to music much more enjoyable.
