Arthur Hnatek - Levitation 21 - Actual Studio Footage (from Tigran Hamasyan's "The Call Within")

- This is the actual footage I filmed while recording this song with Tigran and Evan in the studio at UCLA on September 23rd 2019
The song is called Levitation 21
You can find more about the album here : www.nonesuch.com/albums/the-c...
or the single here smarturl.it/TheCallWithin
Note on the video (for full transparency) : As I remember, I recorded 2 full takes on that song and we ended up mixing and matching the 2 takes for each section of the song (thus the funny cuts and edits). On top of that, I think I recorded overdubs for a few sections and forgot to film them (my bad). So there are 1-2 moments that look weird since they are the wrong take. Tigran also decided to Mute the drums all together during parts of the rubato section and chopped the song short at the end.
Big thanks to Meinl Cymbals and Sticks, Gretsch Drums (and Mark Guiliana for lending me his kick drum), Aquarian Heads
Thanks Noise Engineering for the T-Shirt :)

PS. Wait for the end if you wanna hear my snappy answer to Tigran haha
I hadn't heard of Tigran or Arthur until a year ago. They are both now among my top musicians of all time. I'm infinitely grateful for how their music pushes the limits of any seasoned player.
@Google Sucks I actually found Arthur through MG videos lolol. In my mind they are two sides of the same coin, one having more emphasis on power and precision (Garstka) with Hnatek being a bit more jazz/improvisational oriented and generally having a lighter touch. They both have an intimate understanding of time, subdivisions and they are both god-tier in my book.
The texture of that section with that gentle melody over the frenetic drums and bass is just genius!
I agree. I always find it unbelievable, no matter how many times I hear it😍
Trying to dance to this nearly got an ambulance called... I think that vocal break saved me a big medical bill.
Yay im not the only one that dances to Prog
Nice one lol
The one dislike must be from someone who doesn't know how to count in 21/16 ;)
I can't even count 4/4 (wouldn't that just be 1?) and I liked it.
HAHA BURN
the bass player and drummer definitely don't count it like that
Lolll
Ha ha ha ha ha ha
I love the transparency of this video to show exactly what went into recording a song such as this.
Second that!
because it was edited we dont know if he can actually play this 🤓
@@JeffPenaify That’s the transparency part. Some people might think this was done in one take (I wouldn’t put it past Arthur, as he is a fantastic drummer). What makes it so special is that Arthur documented the recording process and clearly shows that doing it in one take isn’t always necessary.
@@lucacartner7247 I was being facetious guy is clearly phenomenal
@@lucacartner7247 I was trolling
I'm ready for this
you are the dude with the album patience right? it's amazing album. one of the best things I discovered recently.
@@fenylmecc6347 thanks! I also got a few tigran covers on my channel which is why I'm here hehe
this is haunted with ghost notes
Bryan Callen, hopped up on ShroomTech, sits down at the drums for the first time in his life. Art ensues.
It’s a masterpiece - this is one of the best pieces of music I feel. So clever
That's why I love Tigran
Mr. Hnatek, you are a drumming/tempo superhero!
Bro is an absolute menace on the ghost notes. 🫡
Been listening to this all week along with your other videos. Can't wait!

Finding your channel is the best thing I’ve done this month…. Loving your work.

Amazing, thank you for sharing this!

All I got is Yes!!!!!!!
Wooooowwwww 🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Oh, right, you're not using the kit's kick drum, I see it now on the back.
Nice fact that it's Guiliana's kick drum.
Whats Kick drum is it?
I got sick 🤣🤣🤣😚❤️👑
was this tracked live or had the others recorded already? to metronome or free?
Arthur, hello! Tell me how much time you working on track like this? Thank you!
this one came in late.. he sent it maybe 1 month before.. or so

god this song is haunted with ghost notes
!!!
the crash at 1:23 was sick
This is Soo epic! Please someone help me understand how to count these sections...maybe there are some other wizards out there who can figure out what is even going on! #nasty

SYM SAM 21, actually
SYM SAM 21 brother
Amazing drummer Yogev Gabay put out a video about exactly this! I would say he counts as a wizard. 'How to Polyrhythm - Time Consuming ep #2, "Levitation 21" ' is the name of the video
Check the description in Evan Marien
video (bass player on this recording session)
ua-cam.com/video/J_rhUbLmWUA/v-deo.html
There he details how he counts it.
Enjoy!
How does the snare bell keep in place? Tape?
Looks like there's one piece of black tape on the far side of the bell. I think the weight of one of those does the rest!
it's heavy as hell. doesn't move much :)
@@ahnatek I'm desperate to know what Bell that is! Does anyone know?
Arthur, I’m wondering how you think of the last part. Are you thinking in 6 while playing the 7 pattern over it? Or the reverse?
Anyone know what hats he is using here?
' good to do so …
I have a theory that arthur's that tight that he doesn't even have any monitoring in. He knows when to play and when not to haha.
What did I just see/hear? What kind of sorcery is this?
Repping the Noise Engineering shirt.
Umm what’s this open hihat at 1.41?!
Klyrics he said in the description that he didn’t film the overdub recording and on the video, that what you hearing at this part is probably an overdub take.
Joel Azia Ohh I see, my bad!
quantize
agile
are we still pretending jazz artist are not influenced by metal?
Who’s pretending? Tigran talked about meshuggah and Tool being influences some years ago. Musicians are a combination of all around influences.
And vice versa as well my friend. Also no, no one is pretending that
@@andrepintoferreira cool, I didn't know he said that
@@captainkiwi77 I think we can all agree position of jazz very well established, personally I don't know a lot of jazz musician praising heavy stuff
@@mat_j considering Tosin Abasi is featured on this album, those connections are getting recognised now for sure
magic at 2.08 how the music sheet disapear. ;-)
Love this because I come from progressive music(yes, genesis) and I can hear some powerful groove here, not just boring cymbals as in jazz.
Great video but why couldn’t you just do this in one take? Why the cut?
I’m assuming it’s because of how crazy hard this piece is and it’s impressive af that he did this at all. So doing it in 1 take with absolutely no mistakes would be so many times harder.
@@lucarobinson701 when you ask the man to work in perfection lmao
I know they’ve been compared to Meshuggah many times but man this guy definitely sounds like he’s been influenced by Tomas Haake!
I don’t think so…his playing sounds a lot more like Morgan Agren than Haake
Very cool. Now bust into a Grady Tate swing feel!
Sorry, man
i just muted you talking
I did
