Dat groove feeds off my soul and I LIKE IT ! Anybody got an idea on what is making that fucking rhythmically mind blowing bounce ? That groovy headnoding eye squinting feel that makes me just want to fuck up my room and cuss at myself for not being as talented as these guys ? I mean is it the time signature ? I NEED TO PUT A WORD ON IT
1,2,3,1,[2],1,2,3,1,[2],1,2,3,1,[2],1,2,3,1,[2] To really "get it", count it in your head and say 2 (out loud), where I put square brackets around the 2 :-)
First, do you see anybody in the band using 16th note body language while they're playing? No, you don't. You see people exhibiting the half-time feel. Mono Neon is not "bobbing" to no 16th notes, my friend :-) Second, "you're not sure if that's right" is just a micro-aggressive way to say you didn't count it that way...so it must be wrong. It's not. If you were a band conductor with a baton conducting this, you would not be waving the baton in no "1-e-an-a" 16th note motion, dude. I wrote it the way I wrote it, because people watch the conductor to get the time with foreign rhythms. My notation was like what a conductor (or choreographer) would use. I know my conductor-like notation "is right" and can easily post voice-over proof on SoundCloud, if anyone is interested.
First, I'm not having trouble "understanding" anything. Second, go back and re-read the original question which is "what is making it bounce?", not "where are the accents" or "how do you write it out on a drum chart?"! You were so caught in your fervor to "prove" me wrong and invalidate what I wrote, that you didn't even friggin' answer the question the dude asked! Lol Second, did you really think I didn't know the tune is in 5/4 (and what the 4 in that time signature means/represents)? Third, I didn't write that you said to bob in 16th notes. I brought up 16th notes because you wrote 1-e-an-a, which has been used to count 16th notes ...for ages. Even with that, I never wrote that your 16th note-based notation was "wrong". Now you're butt hurt because I used a passive aggressive tone to call you out on the micro-aggressive way you reply to YT commenters. Case in point, you wrote "The 80/20 Drummer nobody is allowed to dislike things that you like? Okay princess." as a reply to the YT commenter named The 80/20 Drummer. He wasn't even talking/replying to you, but yet you still felt the need to play "thought police". I'm guessing the "Okay princess" part was intended as a "compliment", right? FOH! Again, my notation is from a conductor/choreographer's perspective and is presented using 1/4 notes, with 4 measures in the overall pattern..even though like you, I am a drummer. I used 1,2,3,1,2 (instead of 1,2,3,4,5), because that's how a conductor/choreographer friend told me they interpreted it :-) Saying "2" aloud on the second 2 (or "5", if that's your preference), is a way they made it "bounce". Finally, the difference between me and you is that I'm open to listening to/embracing the perspective of others...without subscribing to some socially-engineered, directive to invalid their demonstrable reality...because it happens to differ from the one I currently hold. Again, not saying (and never said) your perspective is "wrong" or "might be wrong". I do however know that I can demonstrate that my conductor/choreographer friend's perspective is just as right as your 1-e-an-a "right way" :-)
5 against 4 polymetres (metre: 4/4 (most of the time the thirt quarter note is highlightet by the drummers on the snare) , but it depends on where you think the first note of the measure starts; divided into a 16th note subdivision; every 5th 16th note is played by the bassplayer to create somewhat a second puls)
I'd count it 5/8 myself. 5/4 is probably too slow to count accurately through the solo section, but as Nick said it's a social construct. Just feel it however you want to.
+Nathaniel Hunter yeah MonoNeon is a beast on the bass but I don't think I could play along side him with all that extra curricular gear he wears and puts on his bass LOL Dude can play tho
1,2,3,1,2,1,2,3,1,2,1,2,3,1,2,1,2,3,1,2 Accenting all the "ones", of course :-) That's probably how Sput explained it to the original bass player, who couldn't "get it right"! Lmao. Mono Neon nails it. Reminds me of something Mike Brecker would write.
Prep's Casket maybe you should though. listen to kamasi Washington's new record. if done right, more percussion is better percussion and this band is called ghost note for a reason
i grew up on these vides. everyday after school i'd watch these videos now this is so nostalgic coming back years later. ❤
Always a treat to see the Werth brothers in action.
So much groove!!!
Drum Beats Online are you sponsored by meinl or just a fan?
righhtttt !!!
I still enjoy this tune soo much. That transition starting at 2:00 leading to the breakdown was soo cold 🧊
The rhythmic displacement is awesome and I love the latin elements in here; very well done; solid playing and dynamics.
This is my new favorite song.
My god this is the sickest thing I've heard in a good while. Fresh and funky baby.
That groove change at 1:17 ?!?!? FACE MELTING!
The song is in five but they switch to four and then back to five. Super cool.
Mono Neon is a sick bassist
one of the best performances I've ever seen in my life. Especially for the bass player; Love you Mono Neooon!!
Been waitin to see this song done big since that Mononeon video.

theyre overlapping 5/8 and 4/4. i think.
1,2,3,1,[2],1,2,3,1,[2],1,2,3,1,[2],1,2,3,1,[2]
To really "get it", count it in your head and say 2 (out loud), where I put square brackets around the 2 :-)
Awesome ! thank you all for answering ! I still play the shit outta this song every time I feel low on energy !
Uasuka you've been most helpful !

that baseline haunts my dreams
oh my god to play this kind of music with other people requires a ridiculous amount of skill. i could only play weird rhythms like this if i was solo.
This is so cool !
это очень, очень круто!!!
Fantastic!!!!!!!!!
Sooooooooooo good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What time signature is this? Doesn't sound like 4 or is that because of the accent displacement? Not sure
It seems to be 10/4 .
+Hugo Bertil it's much easier to count it in 5/4.

It is a 4 over 5/4 @ approx. 120 bpm
4/4 being played by the bass, 5/4 by the drums
this is clean
Snark puppy's bongo player?
Man. Serious disrespect to Nate here. lol
Anyone know what heads Sput is using on his floor toms?
Kinda late response, but he's using Evans EMAD bass heads on the floor toms
This is the best kind of ridiculous.
Hard.. to.. type... my face is melted off. Damn. I'm gonna go practice.

Dude can play tho
Hey Prince dug his look when Mono played for him sooooo....
He's also got a few solo albums. They're dope.
isn’t this groove also used in a zildjian live vid?
What kinda over the ear headphones are those?
They are Fostex T20RPs.
They're special over-the-hoodie headphones.
Love how the bass player is playing his bass upside down because he's left-handed.

That's probably how Sput explained it to the original bass player, who couldn't "get it right"! Lmao. Mono Neon nails it. Reminds me of something Mike Brecker would write.
Caleb you are right
Ya mn
Parts tanken from Drew - Bouvet
... taken...
Sput is so ill. GOD!#%U!@U*#%)*!^
wtf! :D
First
I don't get the point of having two drummers.
But why two drummers? It just sounds messy
It sounds fantastic. Loads of bands use two drummers and pan them left/right, gives you a massive sound.
Prep's Casket maybe you should though.
listen to kamasi Washington's new record.
if done right, more percussion is better percussion
and this band is called ghost note for a reason
