Prof G, I recently bought a house on the beautiful island of Madeira in Portugal so now I can't stand my job anymore - I want to sit on my balcony and watch the ocean instead. The house is paid for, my ETF is currently standing at €250K, and I can invest €5000 - €6000 per month for the next year. (But there's that little issue of the market going down, maybe for the next 3 years?) My fire number is only €300K as I need only €700 per month for living expenses, but am calculating €1000 p/m to be safe, so 25 x 12000 = €300K. Question: Is SCHD the quickest way I can quit my job in a year? I NEED to! Thanks again so much for your channel. I follow about 20 finance channel, but yours is definitely the easiest on the eye 🙂 🙂
@@ilsevanheerden4976 I appreciate that! And I recently visited Portugal this summer and it was a blast! As far as living off your investment, it seems that SCHD or a high dividend yielding ETF may be a very solid choice for you. As you said though, markets will be turbulent over the next couple years so I’d temper expectations. In my opinion, now is a great time to be investing as we are near the bottom, but you may not be able to live off the fruits of that investment until markets rise again.
Fun observation, if you pair SCHD 50/50 with a growth fund like SCHG, QQQ, VUG, VGT, etc. you actually can out perform VOO or S&P 500 with a better dividend when you backtest.
So what. You can always find a "better" portfolio when back testing. But don't expect that performance to continue in the future. People can't seem to understand the idea of indexing, some kind of psychological block.
Like Madshadow stated, if you combine SCHD with QQQ or something similar, you can get a really nice turnaround. I think a 75% SCHD and 25% QQQ is the best bet.
I currently have $5 a day in SPLG. It has a lot more room for growth and is much cheaper. It also has nearly identical returns over the last 10 years to VOO. Next month I’m going to bump it to $10 a day. I will be adding FTEC,O,PG, and Microsoft because of the overall shareholder dividend yield. I also think it might split soon 😎
As a beginner I watch all your videos at least 2X The first time I just listen The 2nd I write notes on each point Thank you for these analysis’ explanation
Solid funds and as an investor who has a fund as the foundation of my portfolio, I would actually say a fund like VTI which is. a broad market fund with both growth and value investments within it is paramount for an investor... might as well play the entire market to reaps the benefits of also have growth stocks while playing it safe. This is what Lynch and Bogle also advise over just a dividend fund!
If we take hystorical price returns only then I believe SCHD is the clear winner, two reasons. 1)since the dividend yield is double, it will snowball alot quicker, effectively adding 1.5%+ to the yearly growth for people accumulating. 2)if one would retire on one of these funds, then the extra dividend would make it easier not to sell as many shares if one follows the 4%rule, including bear markets Plz correct me if I'm wrong 👍
I don't really think you can go wrong with either on a long basis. Having said that, add one more vote toward SCHD. Thanks for the great vid, I shared it to my FB too.
I follow the late great Jack Bogles advice. VOO is the way to go, set it and forget it and max it out. SCHD is nice as well if you are looking for dividend income in the future. Slight risk with SCHD because it hasn't been around that long to backtest data like VOO.
Awesome video!!! I remember mentioning SCHD :) to you on a previous video. My goal now has been to DCA on that until a good percentage of my portfolio is from it. Then going to add VOO the same way and have both ;)

Awesome! I will look up the total return of the asset for a 10+ year time period and just forecast that way or you can go deeper and look up the annual return % for the past 10+ years and use that for appreciation and then the 5yr CAGR for their dividends and then add that in. I’ll see if I can find better tools because I’ve found them just searching on Google but don’t have them off the top of my head. Usually total return includes reinvesting the dividend for ETFs

Prof G, Great video series, I have been watching many of them and find them helpful as I continue my research. I was wondering if you have thought about producing a video on investing in Business Development Companies (BDCs), they also seem to offer higher "Dividends" similar to REITs. I would be curious to see what your thoughts are on these and if/when they may make sense to invest in. I would also be curious to know what you suggest for an allocation of ETFs and stocks (percentages) to maximize growth over 10, 20, 30 years, etc. Thanks
Thanks for watching and for the kind feedback! I haven’t researched BDCs much but I will look into them and see if that’s something I’ll cover here. Thanks for the video! Totally new to ETF's. Is it best to just pick 2-3 different options such as SCHD, VUG, VGT and just stick with those 3 for years or should I pick several and fund those each year? Thanks again
Great questions! There’s so much overlap within a lot of these ETFs so picking multiple ones within the same category (example: 4-5 different ones for “growth”) may just be overkill. It won’t necessarily hurt you, just unnecessary stress to fund multiple funds!

In my taxable I have a SP500 fund and in my Roth I have a total stock market fund. Do you think it’d be wise to add SCHD to both accts?
I’ve been researching this for a while and I will be adding it to all of my accounts. Right now it’s in my taxable account but there is a solid case to add it to the ROTH as well.
@@NolanGouveia
Thank you! I was thinking of doing the same!
@@djholland5324 keep crushing it man!
Hi DJ. I would add it to your Roth as it pays a nice dividend and in the Roth you will sidestep any taxes on the paid dividend whereas in a brokerage account you will owe a tax on the dividend. Just my opinion.
What are your thoughts on VOO vs FXAIX. Pretty much the same in overall performance, but lower expense ratio right? I have VOO in my brokerage account, but I'd like to sell VFFVX in my Roth IRA and go with SCHD and FXAIX after watching your 401k video.
Ya they are almost exactly the same. And that sounds great as long as that what your goals are for investing!
@Investing Simplified - Professor G thanks for the quick reply!
What do you teach?
Entrepreneurship, marketing, and finance
what about covered call ETFs?
Can you make a video on which is better VOO or DIA to invest on… I really like both but would like to know what’s your opinion…. Pleeeeeeeaaaaasssssssseeeeeee…!!!!
Qqq looks expensive with a tiny 30 day yield.
QQQ is a long term investment for the appreciation as a growth fund, not really at all for the dividend
VOO is outperforming it this year however.
Your channel is so good! Thank you!!!
Thank you so much for watching and for the kind words!
Vgt and schd

Interesting
Advice for me but if you turn 62 tomorrow which one would you select as if you were jumping in with retirement money to invest enjoy the video as always thank you
SCHD for sure
@@NolanGouveia thank you for that advice just want additional questions with the answers dividends at 62 I was thinking maybe a 60/40 split 60 SCHD 40 Jepa
awesome.

VTI.
Different funds for different goals. VOO is a long term growth play. SCHD is a dividend / income ETF.
True, but the return of schd has been creeping up there so it’s a pretty interesting one to watch overall!
With the high interest rate new few years and recession around the corner, all of them going to come crashing down soon
Time to scoop it up on sale!
Curious what will happen to these type ETFs when the market starts to pump again? People flooded into them as safe havens during the bear market over the last year or so. Will they exit in mass sinking these dividend funds?
The companies within the funds will be profiting more which would make the fund value higher so I don’t see why people would exit them
Oof, corrections. :/
Not great from that perspective yes! But since I buy in every month no matter what, I’m here for the sale!!

May be you are not a real professor? You know professors have to get PhD
😂😂
Shouldn't you compare schd with voice?
Not sure what voice is 😅
@@NolanGouveia sorry autocorrect typo. I meant to say voov
@@humblenobody this video was just specifically to compare and contrast VOO and schd as they are the two heavy hitters in my mind! What etf is your favorite or which ones do you invest in?
I'm so conflicted also lol, VTI is my core position on my portfolio and SCHD comes 2nd.
Now I also own MSFT-AAPL-GOOG-AMZN and I'm seriously considering dropping VTI and making SCHD my core since I already own most of the VTI top 5.
What are your thoughts on this?
I'll be adding the money to SCHD and maybe other dividend stocks on my portfolio
I totally see this but if it was me I’d keep my position in VTI but just maybe add all future money to SCHD or other individual stocks. So my answer is all of it :-)!
@@NolanGouveia I considered that also... thanks a lot for your reply
@@ildefonsovilar always!
Hi professor G I have one question. I was planning to have VOO, SCHD and QQQ. If I Buy SCHD and reinvest the dividends it will have compounding effect which will not happen in QQQ and VOO Will it be better to just have SCHD because of the compounding effect? I am so confused in this. Waiting for your reply Thanks @NolanGouveia
All of them will have compounding effects as long as they appreciate (which they normally do!)
