SPY has MUCH better option premiums and would be the reason for using it vs VOO.
SCHD is my all time favorite ETF. I have 710 shares! ❤

Correct me if I am wrong but if one of our goals is to sell covered calls on our shares, it is better to hold SPY due to the options dates and premiums right? Thanks

If you were to only hold 1, VOO easily wins. Chasing yield at the expense of higher risk/reward growth and tech companies is most likely a losing bet (if you have a long enough time horizon, probably 20 years or more).
HOWEVER, SCHD is the best partner for a more aggressive tech fund like VGT. In fact, 50% in VGT and 50% SCHD has outperformed VOO the last 12 years and VGT with a dividend fund like DVY has outperformed SPY for nearly 20 years. You’re talking about a 2-3% alpha for the last 20 years. That’s pretty remarkable
You’re probably thinking VOO is much less risky, but it isn’t. It is less risky, but it still has large cap growth and tech as the largest holdings. Large cap growth and tech need to do well for VOO to grow significantly.
Overtime, growth and tech most likely will do better just as they always have (with a long enough time horizon). However, value has outperformed in certain market conditions. This is why it’s important to spread the risk, without losing a ton of reward. Even though VOO tries to give an almost equal weight of Growth to Value, having 2/3 in growth and 1/3 in value has done remarkably better, especially when increasing the amount of tech held in the portfolio.

Expensw ratio is TOTALY UNIMPORTANT when you look at total return, that is calculated after subtraction of fees

VOO slightly outperforms by 3 basis points per year if you Dollar Cost Average. Example: SWPPX gets 10% in a year. VOO would typically get 10.03% in that same year.
However, it has 1 basis point higher expense ratio (0.02% vs 0.03%). Other advantages of SWPPX are easy to automate biweekly or monthly investing with big brokers like Schwab, TD Ameritrade, or E-Trade. And easy to rebalance if other index mutual funds are used. M1 Finance platform negates all the advantages of SWPPX, minus the expense ratio.

SCHD has underperformed the S&P in almost every year of its track record regardless of the higher dividend. Similar large cap value ETFs are in the same boat. Despite that even small cap value has underperformed over the last 15 years, I still see value in it that I cannot find in LCV. With SPY vs VOO, it just comes down to strategy. If you're selling covered calls on your position, then SPY. If you're holding the S&P passively, then VOO. VOO has the lowest expense ratio and turnover rate. Either expense ratio may not seem like a lot, but for every million invested VOO saves you $600 over SPY annually. Again, that may not be piles, but I have better things to do with $600 per mil than to set it on fire if I'm not offsetting the cost by selling covered calls.
