    (NYSE:ARR) is a high-yield mortgage REIT paying monthly dividends. The stock has a dividend yield of about 14%, as of August 14. If the stock has increased sharply because the business is performing exceptionally well, it could still be a bargain. I'm still looking for companies to make additions to my $350K portfolio, to boost performance. Here for ideas...

      While we may have had to learn on our own, it's not too late to home school our kids on good money management. Our son went to a charter high school and they taught the very basics. I wrote him a 20k word follow up booklet with more details and sample portfolios. If we love our kids we need to teach them the why and how of investing to secure their long term financial future while they are still young and have 40 to 60 years of investment horizon ahead of them. In my opinion, this is so much better than any other inheritance we may leave them in the future.

      They don't teach in schools because if people started to learn the power of investing early. They could probably retire in their 50s. That would be bad for employers. The system is designed to keep society working into old age.

Why aren't we adopting that strategy in all areas of our lives. I envision a world where we all take a good look at all the limits we set for ourselves and start removing them. Why, that might turn out to be fantastic for employers!

    Past returns are no guarantee of future returns. This is recency bias. Mr Buffet said you don't need a high IQ to be a good investor, just 2 qualities, self discipline and a lot of patience. Investing is mostly about behavioural psychology. Being able to control your behavioural biases is what really matters. That's why passive investing works, low costs, better diversification and it enables people to overcome their behavioural bias, buy low, sell high, not the other way round. It works provided you stick to the rules

    • @kosterix123
      @kosterix123 5 місяців тому

      Talk about bias. Mr Buffet is survivorship bias. Those that went under, aka blew up, you never hear about. Self discipline and patience are too vague. Typical 70s/80s talk. Not actionable.
      Investing is not at all about behavioral psychology (of the public), that's speculation. If I buy a tulip for a car, I will do so if I can sell the tulip for a house. Flipping.
      Investing is what the word says, to invest attention, time, energy, study competition, study the management, cash flow, legislation, every little detail. The "ing" in investing means a process, something ongoing. You don't invest by spending a few hours every Sunday.

    Transfer of wealth usually occur during market crash, so the more stocks drop, the more I buy, in the meanwhile I'm just focused on making better investments and earning more as recession fear increases, apparently there are strategies to 3x gains in this present market cos I read of someone that pulled a profit of $350k within 6months, and it would really help if you could make a video covering these strategies.

      It comes down to technique; a downtrend gives you room to focus on the market and grow significantly in the short or long term. While it is easier to make money when the market is rising, a downtrend can still yield high returns if you have the necessary knowledge and skills. For this reason, I have been scaling up during this difficult period by working with an investment advisor; this has been the only way I have raised up to $150K in the last six months.

      "Transfer of wealth" sounds posh and chic, and it's display of one's ignorance.
      Market capitalization of a stock vs the underlying asset is the amount of public-offered stock times the current price. It's like you have a bell curve that you paint a box around then color it in. It doesn't exist.
      During a crash, all correlations go to 1, and there is no transfer of wealth, rather there is the evaporation of potential sale profits. That wealth never was there in the first place.
      Transfer of wealth in the sense of realizing gains means to have dumped your papers onto a greater fool at the best of times. Has nothing to do with crises.

    Just my thoughts - look @ the top 10 holdings of an ETF, and determine how much of the ETF's holdings are in the top ten. That is usually (though not always) the main driver of returns.
    If you narrow your choice down to two ETF's (example SCHD and DVY) look for top ten holdings and see how much overlap there is. You want to avoid a high level of overlap.

Should I let one etf build up an account and then use returns to start to diversify from there after it's already been building for a while? Most of the videos I see are how to tune or optimize an existing portfolio but what's the best way to get caught up?

    Something that should have been mentioned, most of these index based ETFs use sampling which readjusts the investments every quarter based on performance. So the high weight of IT might not be the same if IT underperforms. With that in mind the ETFs are already diversified within themselves and it's rarely useful to have more than one. This is the reason SNP500 is one of the best ETFs to hold long term, because the weak companies are automatically weeded out and you are always invested in the best companies.

    One comment that summed it up for me was why your portfolio may not include REITs. I recently started on this investment journey after always having had a fear of stocks. Being a real estate agent in South Africa for some 30 years plus, I had all my eggs in one basket. Real estate income generating properties. Not bad, but no I need to diversify for currency hedging as the Rand is on a permanent downwards spiral. I also need to diversify. So your 3 fund portfolio is my priority and makes a lot if sense for South African investors I think.

    What are your thoughts on the times that international have outperformed US stocks? Assuming no dollar cost averaging, from about 2001 through 2009 you would have a negative return on the S&P500. Investing in QQQ in 2001 you wouldnt have broken even until 2011. 2001 through 2013 (US begins outperforming around 2013) and the CAGR of Vanguard's emerging market index is over 10% while the S&P 500 still fell short of even developed markets with only a 4.5%. Thats seems quite significant in time and money to totally disregard the rest of the equity market. Watching this as a Canadian, it's 10x worse as a Canadian. Many ETFs that should exist simply don't, or have so little volume they may as well not. Even if you do find one, you're paying really expensive MERs or exchange fees (yes, even with Norbert's gambit). It's almost impossible to get fully diversified without getting your hand in the pot, or taking a singular provider/exchange risk (VTI) and accepting lower-than-average returns.

    I think diversification is more important as you reach retirement age when you no longer have earned income to invest. Especially adding more stable value/bonds to your portfolio to help reduce impact of sequence of returns risks. By your measure you’d probably say I’m over diversified as I have small, mid, and large cap funds plus an international. However, I don’t watch the market, I just always buy. So I don’t think I have the ability (or time) of WB to do a detailed analysis of each company I want to own.

  • @dameanvil
    @dameanvil 8 місяців тому +23

    00:00 📈 Focusing solely on high total returns can lead to overlap in ETFs, essentially buying similar assets from different funds, causing redundancy and potential inefficiencies in your portfolio.
    04:32 💼 Understanding fund overlap is crucial; assess the holdings and weightage across various ETFs to avoid inadvertently doubling down on specific stocks within your portfolio.
    08:53 🌐 Diversification shouldn't mean diluting quality; Warren Buffett advocates investing in understandable, strong businesses rather than spreading investments too thin across multiple stocks.
    11:13 🔄 Constantly changing your portfolio based on new information without understanding your investment goals can lead to inefficiencies and may not align with your overall strategy. Understanding your investments and goals is crucial before making changes.

    It’s much better to outline what your key points are as opposed to repeating the same point.
    For example, it’s not helpful to say multiple times and using vaguely different terminology, it’s OK to have overlap between funds. Much better to get to the point of when and why overlap could be a problem.

    Why not just buy the good stocks. What other product do we buy where 75% of it is crap. Just buy the good stocks. Why pay a fee for someone to do this for you just go buy AAPL, NVDA, MSFT etc and if you have to diversify do some risk free or low risk. 5% MM great place to start..

    If you are young better to put more money in QQQM and VGT 75% then 25% SCHD when you have 60 or more then do the opposite

    ABOUT the end of May. I picked stocks: MOD, EXTR & LMB. LMB went from $21.01 to $43.21 100%..// EXTR $ 21.65 to high $ 32.xx peak) Sell peak. 47% // MOD $19.73 to $56.74 >> 187 %. Growth Stock with high Earnings. Two had hard pull backs due to WAR news. I am thinking MOD ar $ 56.74 will double again in a year. Big time. >> Sell all peaks if they look like a profit sell off-- Always buy the dip back. Ride with the earnings. Hold with the earning runs. Sell if earning go down. Buy back when a company earning go again. Move from one to another.

    I put my 11 YO in VB, VO, VOO and VXUS. Who knows which segment will lead the market over the next 40 or 50 years, and I think VTI is way too concentrated in Large Cap.

    Why do people buy SCHD than VOOG? does VOOG not profit more than SCHD?
