There's a tiny amount of recoil, but heating gas up to where it expands fast enough to make and audible crack would probably cause a small amount of recoil.
There is no two books/sources that agree on how lasguns work, wether they have recoil, wether they shoot beams or bolts. He could have done whatever he likes and it would have been accurate to some combination of sources.

Thanks! The sounds are ripped from Team Fortress 2, still trying to find a suitable sound. Conflicting lore makes it harder lol. Some sources say its a whine, some its a loud crack, and some its both but depends on the power setting. I'll play around with the sounds certainly.
just gonna say right now, the fact that one can HEAR the sound of a Lasgun firing really says how strong these guns actually are, how much energy is in each blast. it's not the most powerful weapon in the setting, but compared to modern arms, it's damned powerful
That is smooth, but the army always taught us to keep your eyes on the enemy, you basically knew your kit so well you could grab a new magazine without looking. Could be a good reload variant for a Kasrkin. Otherwise, looks tight, real tight. You should be proud of yourself.
@Matthew Beattie Planetary Defense Force isn't professional, off world Guardsman would be though, plus they are the ones the Commissars are constantly looking at. That's what I'm saying, but I get your point, it would likely be a rougher reload than a contemporary soldier due to the high turnover.
Looks good so far! My only critiques are on the loading itself. When you're swapping a magazine try to have his off hand hit the release before grabbing the power pack. That way there's a real sense of mechanical engineering to the gun with (what I would guess) to be a simple hand movement!
Was about to mention it being funny that he keeps the thing rather than throwing it away, before remembering they're rechargeable. Neat little detail, fitting to the universe rather than generic stylisation...
Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy using Blender, I personally absolutely adore it, especially when it comes to character rigs, being able to edit meshes on the fly, creating backgrounds from scratch, a built in video editing workspace etc.. It's hard to switch from SFM to Blender, but in the end it's theroetically worth it. Naturally you can create equally impressive things on both softwares, but still
Its not that I don't enjoy using Blender, its an amazing program and I want to learn more of it. It's just that I want to focus on animations for now, and SFM lets me do that without too much hassle of re-porting models. I do use Blender on the side to learn modelling though! Someday I'll make the full switch, someday!
When you realise that the gun must have been at maximum power settings to have recoil and burn through the pack in just three shots... Mah boy is shooting at something heavy.
Why add recoil to a laser rifle? Because it’s cooler that’s why. What? You thought we built our spaceships like flying cathedrals for practical purposes?!
amazing! if I may ask. what kind of effect is it with the laser ? and what is the name of the laser sound ? I been looking and cant really find something close to this.
But would a lasgun have recoil? I love this animation and how accurate the sound is. There's a few books mentioning recoil like Redemption corps, Cadia stands and the hh but would a laser based gun have any recoil since it's just light?
I'm not a physicist but It would probably still have a small amount of recoil, since the energy is being distributed across that whole beam, it would make sense for the muzzle to have a mini explosion. But I added more recoil mainly because rule of cool.
Very nice work! You know, that is what I wondered about the lasgun. Given its a laser weapon, and can be recharged by sun and heat sources, does it actually have to be reloaded like here or can be fired until the battery runs out? Please, don't get me wrong, this isn't critic, I plan/had in mind a fanfic of the imperial guard and want to make sure I get the lasgun right in that regard
The batery runs out after a number of shots and recharges like you said. So they need to reload but the batery recharges while the guardsman fights/lies dead on the ground
Is it possible to export these animations into things like Gmod. I can think of a couple of Warhammer 40k mods that would be grateful of animations like this.
So lemme run this one by y'all; a first person shooter where you play as guardsmen from different divisions of planetary guardsmen, in the style of Battlefield 1's war stories. Lasguns are capable of shearing limbs off of unarmoured humans and punching through concrete. It just looks weak because everything in 40k is batshit crazy compared to it.
@Matthew Beattie some lasgun designs like the Krieger's Lucius Pattern no. 98 even uses a higher power output lasgun that makes them only able to have like 20-30 shots per energypack, but the individual las-blasts are like 3x to 7x more powerful than a standard pattern lasgun

The reason he puts all of his spent batteries into a pouch is because he is making the world’s greatest electrical hand grenade in existence.
Haha, like a guardsman is going to live long enough to need to reload
they can only shoot so many guards man at a time, he was just standing at the back
Canonically, the guardsmen survive for an average of 15 hours after being deployed
I like that he puts the empty magazine in one pouch and gets the fresh one from a different pouch. It would make sense to organize them like that
Smooth like butter, buddy.
Did you make the sound yourself? I think it needs to sound something more like a crack, a high pitched pew.
