The Death Korps of Krieg are galaxy renowned trenchfighters and siege specialists. Their guardsmen stand emotionless against hails of gunfire, artillery bombardment all in the name of atoning for their planet's sins.
When a nearby regiment is forced to pull back lest they be completely wiped out, the Krieg 143rd commits to a full frontal charge to regain lost ground. Chaos renegades stand ready to repel the attackers, while the only sign of emotion from the guardsmen are the glint of their gasmasks in the fires of the battlefield.
200 hours of work and a few dozen in sound design, I finally finished this dang 5 minute clip. Pretty big jump considering I only ever done 30-40 second shorts before. It was painful, frustrating and showed me how much more I have to learn, and where my weaknesses lie, but it was fun seeing the final result.
Criticism and feedback is HIGHLY appreciated! I'm still a fledgling hobbyist animator who works on animations in my free time between classes, so any and all critique is extremely useful to help me learn to be a better animator!
Particular points of note I would appreciate feedback on are Motion, sound design, and pacing.
Leave a like if you liked the video (or dislike if you didn't!) and leave a comment with your feedback! Thank you very much for your help!

@@lmperio_Espanol Their uniform is actually a French ww1 trench coat, and the gas mask is ww1 British, the tactics they use are Russians in ww1 and ww2. The only German thing would be the helmet. In other words, The death korps of Kreig are the human representation of ww1.
@@alexeibolavik1072 Bro, have you hever see the german uniforms of ww1? When they started used the stahlhem? The French coat was blue, this is grey
@@lmperio_Espanol that was the 1914 French design. They realised that the blue and the red colour palettes made them an easy target so they made a new one somewhere around 1915. The only soldiers as fearless as a Commisar.
the only division where the Commissars job is to prevent them from dying gloriously too early.
In fact he has to do the opposite, because even a Commissar knows a dead guardsman is no use unless as an example.

So fucking stoic dude.
Love the design of these guys, the gaz mask is british, the clothes are french, the helmet and the name (krieg = war) are german, really a concentrate of ww1.
Even though they have knobs on 2 sides, I'd say those are german clothings.
@@petergoge2072 overall they are mainly German partially other ww1 combatants
they arw literally modeled after the uniforms of the germans in ww2, so no, you're wrong, it's all german
@@lp.shakur yeah but they do also have blue uniforms so just a dash or French
@@lp.shakur The longcoat & trousers bears a striking resemblance to French WW1 uniforms.
The helmet top shares a profile with the French Adrian helmet while the bottom part is clearly inspired by the German Stalhelm.
The iconic gas mask is extremely similar to the British SBR Gas Mask used during the war.
The bayonet is modeled after the American M1917 Bayonet.
The Lasgun Model 98 is named after the German Gewehr 98
The breastplate worn by Krieg Officers and Death Riders is inspired by the French Cuirassier breastplate.
It could be argued that Krieg is more French than German with the prior points stated. It doesn't stop there as even the way Krieg fights can be likened to French military doctrines.
Krieg and France fight with attrition with similar cases being noted with Vraks and Verdun respectively.
Krieg and Germany however don't share the same doctrines as Germany in our world simply can't monumental losses, instead opting for quick and decisive strikes such as the Schlieffen Plan and Kaiserschlacht Offensive
My favorite thing about this is the small details you put into it, but most notably the sound of the las gun fire. That is probably the closest thing to what an actual laser would sound like, imo. Not the classic "pew pew" we all know but something more grounded. Well done.
I like to think the bang is the sound of the air in front of the barrel rapidly heating from the laser bolt, leaving a near-vacuum, that's then instantly clapped shut by air pressure. Like how lightnings get their sound but on a smaller scale
Its sounds like a fuse popping so violently you could mistake it for a large caliber rifle.

Don't wait for a target since if anyone survived that blast they aren't gonna give you a chance to take careful aim. Kinda small detail done really well
What I like about this video is that it presents another view on the Chaos troppers. When one of them trips his comrade checks in on him and stays behind to cover the retreat of the others. It shows a degree of compassion, duty and heroism that is rarely given to the human followers of Chaos. Usually they are these one dimensional charicatures.

Krieg left to their own devices would never retreat, never surrender. They would win or kill themselves trying. Their Commissar must have ordered the retreat, spineless non Krieger.
A dead soldier cannot kill the heretic bastards, it's not a retreat, it's a tactical withdrawal.
@@GastonBoucher The Death Korps of Krieg famously do not retreat, even to their own fault. A Commissar's role in a Krieger regiment is to urge caution and pragmatism instead of wall-to-wall martyr charges so that each trooper kills the maximum number of heretics before dying gloriously for Krieg's sins.
@@nicholasthompson1387
Depends. Krieg commanders tend to be a different breed, understanding the necessities of warfare and the difference between a life sacrificed and a life wasted.
A Krieg commander may well know when a line is broken, and require falling back to the next line. They are masters of siege after all. Of course it goes without saying, no Krieger will ever fall back until it is absolutely necessary.
@@GastonBoucher If I understand my lore correctly, the last time a Krieg Commissar ordered a retreat, his men brutally killed him because of cowardice.
What I love about this is that it portrays the Guard as being a genuinely competent and well trained force. So many people frequently compare them to Astartes or Xenos and just assume that the IG are mere fodder and just bodies to add to the pile.
However people forget that in the spectrum of human soldiers in the Imperium, guardsmen are actually fairly high up and surpass many layers of recruitment beyond militia and PDF etc. As a result, it is actually refreshing to show them as being capable in combat and not just as meat for slaughter. These aren't just your average press ganged mongrels or desperate voidsmen. They are a dedicated and elite combat force and its good to see such depictions of the Guard.
"Mess with the best. Die like the rest" ^_^
Yeah. Guardsmen are actually pretty competent. And unlike what the meme says they don't get swayed by chaos easily either and usually fight to the last man if necessary. And they are actually the main fighting force of the imperium. It's mostly the civilian population or pdf that falls to corruption.
Elite they are but they are canon fodder, even the Astartes afe canon fodder. That is what soldiers are especially those of the Imperium of Man.
But it is also true for real life soldiers: Canon fodder.
Their massive casualties can be explained by the fact that battles happened on a much bigger scale, IRL usually we have battle for a city or village, but in W40K universe theyre fighting for entire worlds
Krieg are portrayed more favorable than the green armored cannon fodder.
I really like whatever sound effect you used for the lasgun. Had a nice, punchy feel without sounding like a regular bullet

No. This is Krieg 40K. Don't know much about the wider 40K but I would love to see any other commander tell a soldier to rejoin the line and have said soldier have 0 fucks about joining the line even tho it is most likely a death sentence.
@@proudamerican183 This is pretty common for all guardsman regiments due to the alternative being summary execution by commisar, every guardsman would usually fall in line, but the kriegsmen are the only ones who want to do it, they live and breathe to fight and die, that is their entire purpose.
@@zeth1331 Okay. So all soldiers rejoin the line but besides the Krieg with 0 f*cks to give (maybe even negative f*cks to give), the others have some f*cks to give.

Reaching behind his back.
"That better be for a shovel!"
Pulls out the shovel.
"Proceed!"
They actually used the entrenching tool as a weapon at the battle of Stalingrad in ww2. Great scene.
They also used anything and everything that could be sharpened or swung hard enough in ww1 for trench fighting
During the wwi trench wars they also used to create something they called the "Trench needle". It's essentially just a large iron spike. Easy and cheap to make but it makes for a far more effective weapon in the cramped conditions of a trench than the bayonet. Not quite as effective as the spade but much easier to produce, carry around and less cumbersome.
@@KingQwertzlbrmpf trench needles were quickly listed as a inhumane weapon and banned from all forms of warfare because of how hard it was to treat and heal the wounds it caused
@@sethgilcrist8088 I mean, yes, but that didn't do much to actually stop the usage of them. They were just too effective in combat and when it comes down to close combat nobody really cared much about such lofty ideas like humanity. The only consideration was to not be the one to die. Other inhumane weapons like for example poison gas are tactical or even strategic weapons and as such their use is a command decision. The trench needle on the other hand is a weapon for the lowly grunt in the trench. And the ease of production meant it's use could never be really much contained.

I want a novel about a guardsman of the DKoK, just to know what they’re thinking throughout a battle. Whether they feel scared charging across no man’s land, whether they’re bored in trench war fare. It’d be interesting to see what they’re lives were like

@@ivandmitriev5748 I'm not even IN to WH40k, and even _I_ know the basics of their legend. That ages ago, they betrayed the Emperor, then relented, and rejoined. That they feel such _intractable shame_ about this, _planet and culture-wide._ That they have turned this shame into _the fiercest dedication in their Galaxy_ to scrub this stain from their souls - a stain they know will never come clean - that they are _absolutely determined_ to *fight and die* for the Emperior of Mankind. Endlessly. For all time. Fight. Kill. _DIE._
But not in a wasteful way, no.. not in a mass suicide ritual. But through ordered, structured, fierce, indomitable strategy of siege, trench, and attrition warfare against any enemy they are dispatched to face. No retreat _except in the gravest extreme_ when the deaths of the unit(s) involved would be a shameful waste, a literal heretical suicide. No surrender. Each engagement, fought not with euphoric exuberance, _but iron-blooded, steel-minded discipline of the highest order._

Everyone's talking about the sound effects, I love the little details: the trigger discipline, the proper tactics on both sides, and the easiest to miss; at around 4:26, while the traitor guardsman is emerging, he threw his rifle over his cover in the opposite direction that he emerged from as a distraction. And it WORKED. The Krieger's rifle barrel flinched towards the gun momentarily, which bought the traitor the seconds he needed to close.
