My high school in small-town Canada didn't look too different from the one in this game. It even has a basement with all kinds of tunnels... One leads to the hockey arena across the street, and the rest are sealed off. There's also a rifle range down there that was used to train students during the first world war.
i like how they made they put the light on the slide of the gun, and duck taped it to the frame, and yet the weapon can still chamber rounds. thats some A grade art design.
I have ZERO common sense. I just read your comment, and bought it based off the promise of unintentional comedy, based off the testimony of a commenter I have never met. This MAY explain why my playlist of games on my channel is so randomly erratic.
I remember I tried these two "gems". They were garbage back then, they are plastic bag full of shit and garbage now. And Jim how could you?! How could you compare this piece of abomination to Silent Hill? Blasphemer!
Yes, schools do indeed look like this in a lot of places. its not creepy, its underfunded. Meanwhile they buy overpriced MACs for their comptuer classes.
@@directentertainmentaplacef8630 How the fuck does a single school have three gyms?! My high school was a former college campus and even then it had one gym and a small weight room...AND it was a school that catered k-12.
5:35 Sorry to tell you jim, but many schools in the US look like that, or worse. I don't even live in a bad area and my public middle school would have made this place look quite nice.
This was one of the more underrated survival horror games of the PS2 era (along with The Suffering). Although it did start petering out near the end. But the sequel is AMAZING! (Obscure: The Aftermath). It's just constant fun with no downtime. You start off with your characters being dicks trying to sneak into a college party and smashing everything along the way. From there it's actually fun run & gun survival horror with some creepy enemies, constantly switching up gameplay situations, and hilarious unintentional comedy. You can get both games on Steam right now. You might want to check out the original, but you HAVE to play the sequel! Grab 2 controllers and do up some local co-op with a friend. It's a fucking blast.
I like both games. They did that coop Horror thing right from the get-go. But: If you die, don't reload, just pick another character from the save room. It get's intense as fuck, when you play coop, one of you dies and the other one is left alone until he returns to the save rooms. Coop Horror can be intense and frightening, this game proves it. I also like Hydravisions spinn on the teen Horror tropes. It checks the book to write a love letter. The Faculty as a nice inspiration. Jim sadly didn't pay much attention to the ingame tutorials and hints. And he ran off without the weapon- Kenny can make it to the exit in the intro sequence.
This was my first real exposure to survival horror back in the halcyon days of my childhood. I thought it was great, but it was too hard for me and I could never finish it. I'd be interested in seeing a full playthrough, just to see what I was missing.
Oh, do definitely endeavor upon a playtrough if you could spare the time, you fine person. Hells, drop the A in the D for it, if you have to. (In my modest opinion.) Whereas the latter is just... sub par, this presents just the right blend of outdated, with promising, with failed potential and character, as understood a decade ago. More please, I say, and have a fine evening, Jim.
You mentioned playing this all the way through. If we won't see a continuation of Deadly Premonition, I would like to see a chunky play of this game. Please and thank you.
The biggest flaw I found in this game series is that they start it out by showing you "anyone can die, even the main cast" and throws a bunch of characters at you, then they have the survivors show up in the sequels, so if you play it now, you'll know exactly who will survive just by looking at the character list on the back cover of the sequel.
The thing is all of the characters survive canonically speaking, but any of them can still die in the first game. Shannon and Stan are the protagonists in Obscure 2, but they can still die in this one.
I actually have very fond memories of this having the appeal of a trashy teen-horror movie. I am just not sure if the humor was intentional or not.....
+clearspira Kenny in this game, the voice actor is Liam O'Brien and he's credited for "Pacer, Cachino, Jessup and Additional Voices" (a.k.a. a lot of generic NPC's) in Fallout New Vegas. I bet it's also one of the "Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter".
Looks more like a Crow reference to me. Were the SAW movies even out back when ObsCure came out? I don't think they were. All I remember from ObsCure was "uuh, Sum 41 made music for it.. wooo highschool" and that's about it
Not Saw, it was a Crow reference. Both Saw and Obscure came out the same year, so it's pretty unlikely that they would reference Saw when it wasn't really a thing yet. Obscure released at the beginning of October while Saw was at the end. Well, that and it just didn't look like the puppet TBH.
Also, if Final Exam is "completely unrelated" to ObsCure (the developer's words), why does it have characters from ObsCure and ObsCure2? Just because they changed name from ObsCureD (gah, the camel-casing starts to annoy me now) and changed the style... and then realized it plays nothing like the older games? Then why have the same characters in it?
The Brand. Obscure never got big, but you do it, because of the brand. Thats the reason, SquareEnix named a MOBA game Nosgoth. And the reason, why everybody hate it by now.
***** ObsCure WAS the brand -_- The developers have plenty of other games under their label and no other game shares "universe" with ObsCure. It's quite clear to me that they started making ObsCureD and halfway through they thought "Well, this will piss people off, but we're too far into it... let's call it unrelated and change the name!"
You know what OBSCURE should of done for saving your game? Made it so the save point is a recycle bin and you'd have to pick up over-abaundant garbage to save your game.... Why? No reason, I just feel the "ink ribbon" formula would be funny, especially when the game looks so filthy with garbage and fliers and papers all over the floor and glued to the walls.
Yes mostly, then again most schools in Britain are entirely different in lay out, and tend to be much smaller, so much easier to keep in nice conditions, in all honesty though I cannot talk much for large city schools in the poorer areas of the country, but again, often smaller so easier to maintain, also Britain has always spent more than most countries on it's social structure.
DenzaMan Yeah, and Significant and Big are quite different and Bang and explosion are different. My point was if he was going to make a joke by saying things that are similar but not the same, he should have gone all the way.
***** Understandable, although the way I heard it "Big Bang" was indeed a very "Significant Explosion". As opposed to what you seem to have taken the joke as. Interesting how two people can interpret the same joke differently isn't it?
Bonjour à vous tous qui me lisez, le style de jeux me rappel les années 1990, génial, MAIS , il est tout en Anglais. Pourriez vous me dire si il y a possibilité de l'avoir en Français, merci. Alain
Many PlayStation 2 games have this eerie atmosphere, perhaps, they were designed to take advantage of the Emotion Engine. But when these games are not played on the PS2 - why do they continue to invoke such eeriness? ...the mystery continues
You know a game's good when the person playing is talking about work and completely different games not even remotely similar to the game being played.
Are you guys serious, that US schools look like this? I'm in the bible belt, and every school I've been in (I've had to change a lot) looked better than this.
"need a tool to open this" maby you should have gotten Josh
My high school in small-town Canada didn't look too different from the one in this game. It even has a basement with all kinds of tunnels... That is a pretty accurate portrayal of many schools in America..lol
I love the emphasis Jim puts on the word "dickhead". It just confirms that out of all the foul names one can call someone, "dickhead" is the worst.
i like how they made they put the light on the slide of the gun, and duck taped it to the frame, and yet the weapon can still chamber rounds.
thats some A grade art design.
Anyone who isn't familiar with _Obscure 2_ needs to go check it out right now. It's an unintentional comedic masterpiece.
I have ZERO common sense.

That's like spontaneous AND not spontaneous at all. I like the paradox.
NathanJ Rodey
I am indeed mysterious and alien in my logic. That's my excuse ofr all those Squirrel Karaoke videos I made, and I'm sticking to it.
I remember I tried these two "gems". They were garbage back then, they are plastic bag full of shit and garbage now.
And Jim how could you?! How could you compare this piece of abomination to Silent Hill? Blasphemer!
TFX Winston they weren't shit you didn't play many games back then cause a lot made obscure look like gold and it was fun
Yes, schools do indeed look like this in a lot of places. its not creepy, its underfunded. Meanwhile they buy overpriced MACs for their comptuer classes.
Or three gyms. My school didn't even have enough athletes to fill one.
But that was 8 years ago, so I can't say about present day and if schools are getting more funding (highly doubt it).
@@directentertainmentaplacef8630 How the fuck does a single school have three gyms?! My high school was a former college campus and even then it had one gym and a small weight room...AND it was a school that catered k-12.

Same here. My middle school locker room was fucking disgusting.
This is 3 years too late, but I gotta say, that's pretty horrible. Sorry to hear that mate.
The amount of editing and care you put into these as opposed to your escapist stuff is interesting

I looked it up, the reboot is called Final Exam and looks as radically different as Jim said. Hard to believe it's in the same series...
Looks like a fun game. Id watch a full playthrough by Jim
No idea if you'll see this, but Sinow and Gab Smolders did a full playthrough of this game AND the sequel
Yes, please more of this. It's fun to watch you play survival horror games.
thanks jim, because of you, now im hooked to chains of love
"The Significant Explosion Theory" I love it.
Violent Expansion Idea.
I'm experiencing second-hand hatred for Josh now, thanks Jim.
I like both games. They did that coop Horror thing right from the get-go. But: If you die, don't reload, just pick another character from the save room. HOW DID YOU KNOW ABOUT THE CHILD MUR- Oh, you were doing a thing! Ha ha ha, of course, pay no mind to the truck in my backyard, nothing funny there.
xD Love you Jim. It'd be great to see you do more of this. :P
Jim, I'm no expert, but I think you have to pick that lock.
I think I could pick that lock
"Hello, Child Murderers!"
DRAT! I'VE BEEN DISCOVERED!
This was my first real exposure to survival horror back in the halcyon days of my childhood. I thought it was great, but it was too hard for me and I could never finish it. I'd be interested in seeing a full playthrough, just to see what I was missing.
As your PR Manager, I also suggest a separate series of videos subtitled "Josh Is A Dickhead."
Being named Josh this video makes me sad :'(
I really loved those two games back in the day.
"The significant explosion theory" ROFL.

God I'm such a child, I giggle like an idiot every time Jim calls josh a dickhead.
What's wrong with me...?
At 20:47 while looking up the woman's skirt a sub title appears "It cant be opened without a tool". Well, no, I suppose it wouldn't.
I'd definitely enjoy a full playthrough of this Jim.
Would love a full playthrough of this loved this game back in the day
Gab smolders did a full playthrough
14:40 "Ahh, he said it, he said the thing!"
Oh please, dear God, play more!
You mentioned playing this all the way through. If we won't see a continuation of Deadly Premonition, I would like to see a chunky play of this game. Please and thank you.
RIP Chemo Sheldon :'(
I have to admit I didn't play much of the first one, but me and some friends played the second one and loved it.
this series is pretty cool
Died at "Chemotherapy Sheldon"
Was never a big fan of Obscure, but boy was it miiiiiiles better than the sequel.
This is pretty late, but as a person from that there U.S. of A place, I'm pretty sure most schools are just old re-purposed buildings.
Sam Riegel and Liam O'Brien, I love hearing them in random games.
Very good game. Incredible atmosphere. Horrifying enemies.
love this game use to play it all the time
that was quite a shocking greeting, even for you. well done, lol
Is the voice of Josh the guy who voices Koizumi from the Haruhi dub? Sounds like it... but then again, a lot of people seem to have that voice.
Average score for ObsCure seems to be ~6.5/10, and the newer 'reboot' game was called Final Exam.
More Obscure please!

Poor "The student" he was born a red shirt and he died a red shirt.
I think you have to pick this lock.
OH MY GOD
Why can't characters in Fallout reach through a busted door and unlock it?! Drove me insane.
Oh, this is schlock.
Don't worry, Jim. I got a dose of serum.
When a Japanese school has the Dark Hour, an American school has.... 6.13 !!
Fanservice, because looking up 17-year-old high-schooler's skirts is completely normal behaviour and won't net you a few years at max-sec at all!
Child murderers? That's a start...
...and I was sad it got pulled from GOG before I had a chance to play it.
Huh, I have never heard of this game. Looks interesting
Why not just do a let's play of this? Looks interesting enough.
All this is doing is making me miss high school a little bit lol
if I remember correctly it was sum41 music in the original release
I actually have very fond memories of this having the appeal of a trashy teen-horror movie. I am just not sure if the humor was intentional or not.....
More Year Walk pls
does anyone know of the spin-off Jim was talking about, 'cause i'd like to look it up
Hold on, one of the characters is called Shannon Matthews?! INB4 she gets kidnapped.
It's the same voice actor as the one in Fallout New Vegas. Unmissable.
+Emperor Katarn Which character did he voice in Vegas? I don't recognise it.

i'll be honest, my high school was shit. it was almost as run down as this school. most public schools are from my expierience.
At 15:45 I noticed a SAW reference.. ( A picture of the puppet was on the wall )
It's in the locker rooms too.

Jim Sterling has obviously never been in an American public school.
Shouldn't that be Significant Explosion Hypothesis?
A theory and a Hypothesis are actually quite different, but no worries, it's a common mistake.

This game was Alan Wake before Alan Wake
jim do a playthrough pls
josh will miss you if you don't

Kenny...Stan...you sure this isn't South Park?
How does the actual game look better than the cutscenes?

i guess this game is supposed to be like White Day a korean game
I feel strangely attracted to Shannon.
Jim I don't appreciate your harsh circumcism of my brother, Josh.

heh heh , LateComers
well it's no alan wake but at least it's not terrible.
it looks good'
how old is this game? and the acting is porn level quality good
No idea what everyone else is talking about, but my high school looked a hell of a lot better than this school.
Shiro2809 mine was falling apart due to miscare of the building
why are all the main characters white?
