The sprint model here is exceptional; he is the most technically sound sprinter I've seen. His hips are in the perfect spot from the jump, and sets up his entire race beautifully; not to say anything of his tremendous relaxation. I can see him breaking 9.7 this season if he gets a hot day with the right wind. To break Bolt's record will take a bit more time, but because of his technique, any improvements he makes in force production won't bleed out. He's got all the tools to make it happen.

He for sure could have knocked off a chunk of time from his 200m world record. It was into a headwind and he was a little bit tired. But sub-19 sounds unrealistic. And his 100m time was about as fast as he could go. Great start, great top end speed, tail wind, fully rested and in peak conditioning. I won’t go so far to say that he will cut down so much so that he might change the face of track and field, but I can definitely see him hitting times in the low 9.7s, and it might be a stretch, but possibly a 9.69.

Many times the tiles actually prove to be remarkably accurate, however, clearly not in this case. The difference between 9.8 and Bolts record is actually massive. I definitely don’t see it going down. Then again it was interesting to learn about the technology now being used to optimise his performance in the 100.

I am Italian and I have followed Jacobs since 2013 (I am passionate about athletics and I lived 10 minutes from his family): I have read the comments and with some I agree very much. I believe that this outdoor season will obviously be important for the World and European Championships but also to prepare for the next one. In this he will also make the 200 (which his coach Camossi absolutely wants, also in function of the 100). They are looking for a way to reach 100 meters in constant acceleration, they have changed something in the start but from next year it should be completely revolutionized (they have already performed on the start in February 2022). He is an infinite talent, without injuries he would be 8.60+ in the long jump, 9.85 and 19.85 in the 100 and 200. He doesn't have Bolt's raw explosiveness, but he has not reached his peak yet. 9.7 is very possible. mid 9.6's maybe. Your assessment and comparison has merits. Even Bolt's coach speculated that Usain could run sub 9.50 if he stopped shifting all over the place. He though Bolt rocking from side to side was taking away from his forward propulsion. He also thought that if Bolt would run through the last 15 or 10m instead of cantering, it would be a sure thing. As per Bolt, he claimed that no one can past him 90m into a race if the person did not already have the lead. His 9.58 is no pushover! I always contend that it will take an athlete almost as tall to break his records and one that's equally fast or faster.

If this guy is running fast times, is consistent and winning global events that means he is really a great sprinter but it doesn't mean he will break the world record in that event.
Remember the second ,third, fourth and 5th fastest man of all time were in their prime in between 2008-2016 ( Asafa Powell is exception) , ran some of the fastest times in the history and still got smoked by a guy who wasn't even trying.
There's a fine line between being Great and being Greatest Of All Time.

He didn’t run much 100m last year, but I’m pretty certain he could’ve run a 9.9 had he really tried. At the very least he has the potential to get the 200m record.

  • @SimplyComplicated1

To beat 9.58 would be extremely difficult. It’s roughly 2-3 metres ahead of his 100m PB & what helped make it possible for Bolt was the amount of ground he covered with each stride, being 6’5”. I don’t think Jacobs will break it but if there’s anyone who can, it would be him. The fact he’s so relaxed in his speed maintenance phase is remarkable

He reminds me how Flo-Jo became the GOAT in 1988, when she was 28 yo already. Huge training to gain power with weightlifting, repeated and methodical refinement on the start (still his/her weak point) until reaching a decent performance in that phase and not losing too much at the very beginning, compared to naturals in starting like Coleman. But, most of all, the physical power of maintaining top speed longer than anyone else, thru “relaxation”. I mean, if you are not strong enough, you literally *cannot* stay relaxed in the final 40 meters, since you begin running out of fuel and you have to force yourself to avoid slowing down too much. But you do: look at the facial expression of the other runners, compared to Marcello: he stays relaxed and keeps going almost at top speed because he is the physically strongest sprinter around, like Flo-Jo was. They seem to even accelerate in the last 20-30 meters, but that is not true: Marcel (as Flo-Jo did) stays fast, while all the other ones have to decelerate.
I cannot say anything about the future, since he looks very strong, but he could have physical problems as he unfortunately did in the past: even a small grain of sand might turn that incredible superhuman running engine back into a normal man. But if this not happens, if he stays top fit, he can run 9.70 this year, and get the 100 m world title for Italy. Usain Bolt with his 9:58 record, maybe is too much for Marcello: Bolt was pure talent you have once in a century, I mean. But nevertheless, it’s just an unbelievable delight talking about an Italian athlete reaching the top of the world, like he did three times in a row! Grazie Marcello, Italy does not deserve you, however GRAZIE RAGAZZO, we love you, keep running our dream alive.
