The BBC have had Michael Johnson as a pundit for major athletics events for many years now. He brings so much knowledge and intense passion for the sport to the coverage, I listen carefully to every word he says because I know I’m going to learn something each time he talks. I’m just slightly too young to remember him competing, but it’s no surprise to me that someone like him would be so immensely talented at the sport.
That was the greatest races of alltime for the 200m. Although Bolt broke it. Its was the winning margin..it was INSANE. To take 0.34 seconds off your own world record. The only thing that surpasses it. Is the insane 400m hurdle final in Tokyo. Where Karsten Warholm took 0.76 seconds off his world record. That was unreal.

I was a kid when I watched Michael Johnson winning all his races. I still remember him sporting golding shoes and winning the race. He is truly one of the best American and world sprinters I have ever seen. Thank you Michael for Great Memories!!!!
Michael Johnson was the definition of speed endurance, greatness, and class during the 90s. He commanded so much respect from competitors and coaches from different nations. Even the Jamaicans, America's sprint rival nation, respected him. So much respect that whenever he requested to meet Usain Bolt or Yohan Blake, they made preparations to meet him in person.

I was waiting for a simulation and a “what if” the two ran in the same event against each other. I liked how Johnson reacted in ‘09 when Bolt lowered the 200m to where it is now.
I love them both. Johnson was a Class Athlete, my favorite in his time. When Johnson was competing, his face looked serious and focused; concentrating on what was ahead of him, what was to come next. I think he hardly pay attention to any other athletes competing. His eyes were on his game,, the finish line.. He was a proud athlete. I salute him. Much respect to M. Johnson. He was the best; dominating in his time. Michael Johnson will be remembered forever. Take away nothing from him. One the other hand, Usain Bolt the Greatest sprinter over 100m and 200m distance of all time; seemed to gave a different flavor to the sport. A spirit that captured the world. Just before a race Bolt is competing in, he would distracted his audience. like a brainstorm; Bolt may dance, make fun or giving signals as if sending messages to his audience. You never see seriousness on Bolt as though he was concentrating on an a global race, he is minutes or seconds away from running. Even when Bolt is on the biggest stage.. As Michael, Bolt captured the attention of a large global audience. In this time with a swinking globe as a result of technology, I can safely say Bolt audience is larger. People crave to see Bolt on the field before and even after a race; wondering what he is coming with next. Love to both Johnson and Bold
I was actually fortunate enough to be in the stadium when he broke the 200m record at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. I like to think that my presence in the crowd gave him the good luck he needed to break the world record! 😅
The answer is both. After seeing MJ break the 200m record in 1996 I didn’t think I would see an athlete perform at that level again. Then in 2008 we saw bolt get double gold and double WR. They are the 2 best sprinters of all time to date IMO. However 1 thing that Bolt had that I have never seen before or after is a charisma that captured the worlds imagination. I hope we get another athlete like this but I feel we will be waiting along time. In the UK we are lucky enough to have MJ as a TV presenter for athletic competitions and he is also the best commentator pundit of all time
Edwin Moses is my Champion, but of a different era and event. 122 consecutive victories, 4 world records, and undefeated over a 10 span (9 years, 9 months, 9 days) in the 400m hurdles. I always admired Johnson’s vertical running posture (I ran the 200m, 400m and 800m, a few days before Johnson, but stood straight up and drove my coach crazy). Bolt is an anomaly at 6’5” with a turnover of a man 5’0”, and can get out of the blocks with the best of them. By the time he gets in stride, it’s over!!! When everyone knows they are battling for 2nd, you’re the GOAT!

Bolt would probably be slightly quicker, not by much though. At 400m Johnson would reign supreme though, as he was a better endurance sprinter rather than shorter distance explosive sprinter. Both 🐐 🐐 in their own right.

Michael Johnson is now a BBC presenter, and there are very few who knows athletics more than he does. Even the medal winners stop to listen to his highly pragmatic person who speaks a lot of sense, he is also prominent in anti-doping policy.
He's from the era where new PEDs were so far ahead of doping tests conducted that it's super easy to get away with doping... Not saying he's guilty but the American doping test system was so corrupt during that period.... Even Carl Lewis admitted to failing doping test and claimed HUNDREDS of American athletes were caught during his time and allowed to escape bans. Most were never charged including himself.
The Lance Armstrong 1999 Cortisone saddle cream incident is similar to what you have just mentioned. believe it or not WADA is only a new organisation relative to the history of the sport only established in 1999, before then anti-doping practices and procedures were inconsistent (and to a certain still are). Having attended conferences and spoken to people with links to WADA and have to deal with WADA, I get the impression that many see them acting like dictators influenced by ideology (yet again some of those who say that who are athletes are probably doping). Many athletes feel uncomfortable with saying anything but the strict WADA line in case they are branded as dopers, Morgan Lakes tweet about two-faced nature of people not expressing their true feelings on how to improve Anri-doping. recently Whsilte blowing has become a big topic in literature especially with Kelsey Ericson's work on the so-called 'True ethical dilemma' and the fact that many of the major doping scandals only came to the fore because of whistleblowers i.e. BALCO, Russia, Nike Oregan Project. yet for some in the upper echelons of WADA there is a possible perception that whistleblowers are just dopers and the only good that can come from them is that they are taken out of the sport. this old fashioned opinion can be summed up by Craige Reedie who stated to RTE "I do not deal with Whilsteblowers, other people deal with them not us [meaning WADA]". This is problematic. Sorry for the long response but regarding Johnson what makes him different is that although he has the same old fashioned opinions of the WADA upper echelons he is willing to listen, debate and adapt and same things that many athletes feel they are unable to say thusly he is outspoken and as a result a breathe of fresh air in my opinion.
@Richard_Head it wasn't under the allowable limit at the time of the testing in 1988. At the time pseudoephedrine, ephedrine, and phenylpropanolamine, were banned stimulants. He tested positive for them 3 times. He was supposed to be banned but US Olympic committee over turned the ruling siting that Lewis accidentally and unknowingly took the stimulants.

Who knows how much faster the new world record will be after someone beats Bolt's current world record. It might literally only be beaten by 0.01 seconds... I'm a big fan of both by the way, but it seems you're trying to belittle Bolt's achievements compared to Johnson's. Plus Bolt has much tougher competition now due to the better available knowledge and technology. Both Johnson and Bolt are Legends!

Born in the 90s so didn’t really know much about Johnson until I started watching track and field later on and saw his record. But i actually got the chance to witness All of Usain’s dominance. Incidentally, we attended the very same high school.

We did not factor in technology. Both running Shoe technology and running track material design has contributed to the ever reducing record times. Johnson may have been faster if competing with Bolt in the same era.

Talking about technology helping reduce the record time? Don’t forget the same technology brought better timing than previous years. If you use these timing techs now to time previous records they might be higher. Let’s not do this. Both are great in their times.
Michael Johnson is a huge idol of mine, and a brilliant pundit. However, Usain Bolt IMO is the single most captivating sportsman since Mohammed Ali. After Beijing he completely revolutionised athletics and athletics will most likely see a drop in popularity now he’s not competing sadly. His impact on the sport has been meteoric.

They’re the 2 greatest sprinters of all time imho. I’d give Bolt the edge in revolutionising the sprinting world simply because, before his appearance, we’ve been told for decades that tall sprinters weren’t even a thing and furthermore that you couldn’t beat WRs unless your running form was textbook. He did it his own way and he did it flawlessly.
Johnson is one of the greatest 400 meters runner ever witnessed by any one no doubt about it. But the most decorated athlete of all times in the main event is the 100 meters and that's Bolt. The most popular athlete will be Bolt no doubt about it. Both of them are legend's and should not be compared.
Even in the US we love Bolt the most but Johnson won back-in-my-day and he's very special to me -- but Bolt is a big time winner and loveable character

The 2000-10s were a doping plagued era. Even more than in the 1990s. Literally every top Jamaican and American sprinter got caught doping. Everyone except Bolt, the face of athletics. You can guess why.

I love track and field and have been a fan for over 65 years. The Olympic 400 where he ran anchor is the one race that always stands out in my mind. Michael Johnson's form was so beautiful. I loved watching the slow mo where you could really catch his beautiful form. I of course was a Usain Bolt fan as well. Being a USA Citizen of course I'm cheering for our team but I just appreciate all the great athletes ones no matter what country they competed for.
Both athletes were great in their own right - however, I will have to give Usain Bolt the edge, because even in the heats, stadiums were full just to see Bolt, particularly at the 2012 London Olympics, both in the 100 and 200m. Johnson only has just one remaining record that is yet to be broken; Bolt has more today, and as MJ said himself, the person that could break Usain's record, perhaps "hasn't even been born yet". I think you left out a piece where you spoke of Micheal Johnson’s spectacular relay leg and world record run but you did not mentioned Usain Bolt’s awesome 8.8 4x100m world record run on the third leg hand off to asafa Powell 37.04 .
Bolt was the third leg? If so, that may be why, because the first and fourth leg splits are always the most accurate. Especially the first leg, because they are starting from a standstill instead of already moving when their individual split starts.
MJ was the man from his days in Baylor. I love that he was part of the 4x400 team that broke the WR at Mitchell Field (rescinded in 08 due to his relay men) as it was the unofficial home track for Uniondale HS where i attended. When he ran that 19.32 it was the most unbelievable sprinting race id ever seen until Bolt. Just want to shake his hand and say thank you for the memories.

However, for me, Bolt gets the nod to have achieved his times/wins in THE ‘blue ribbon’ event (100m) of track & field that a) Every aspiring sprinter views as the one they want to win above all and b) an event that gives zero room for error or underperforming. No time to adjust or comeback. One mistake and you’ve lost.
I had a traumatic childhood but summer of 96 I had a week with my paternal family side. I was surprised with a trip to Disneyland then flew to a week with my favorite aunt's house the night we got there MJ ran the 200 majestic to watch. Got to camp and other fun things for first time. After that summer started running with a bad crowd and then to drugs etc. Now I'm clean and am so blessed beyond what I deserve. Everytime I watch Atlanta Olympic clips I feel that innocence and carefree childhood feeling again.🇺🇸

Michael Johnson is now a BBC presenter, and there are very few who knows athletics more than he does. Even the medal winners stop to listen to his highly pragmatic person who speaks a lot of sense, he is also prominent in anti-doping policy.
He's from the era where new PEDs were so far ahead of doping tests conducted that it's super easy to get away with doping... Not saying he's guilty but the American doping test system was so corrupt during that period.... Even Carl Lewis admitted to failing doping test and claimed HUNDREDS of American athletes were caught during his time and allowed to escape bans. Most were never charged including himself.
The Lance Armstrong 1999 Cortisone saddle cream incident is similar to what you have just mentioned. believe it or not WADA is only a new organisation relative to the history of the sport only established in 1999, before then anti-doping practices and procedures were inconsistent (and to a certain still are).
Having attended conferences and spoken to people with links to WADA and have to deal with WADA, I get the impression that many see them acting like dictators influenced by ideology (yet again some of those who say that who are athletes are probably doping). Many athletes feel uncomfortable with saying anything but the strict WADA line in case they are branded as dopers, Morgan Lakes tweet about two-faced nature of people not expressing their true feelings on how to improve Anri-doping.
recently Whsilte blowing has become a big topic in literature especially with Kelsey Ericson's work on the so-called 'True ethical dilemma' and the fact that many of the major doping scandals only came to the fore because of whistleblowers i.e. BALCO, Russia, Nike Oregan Project. yet for some in the upper echelons of WADA there is a possible perception that whistleblowers are just dopers and the only good that can come from them is that they are taken out of the sport. this old fashioned opinion can be summed up by Craige Reedie who stated to RTE "I do not deal with Whilsteblowers, other people deal with them not us [meaning WADA]". This is problematic.
Sorry for the long response but regarding Johnson what makes him different is that although he has the same old fashioned opinions of the WADA upper echelons he is willing to listen, debate and adapt and same things that many athletes feel they are unable to say thusly he is outspoken and as a result a breathe of fresh air in my opinion.

@Richard_Head it wasn't under the allowable limit at the time of the testing in 1988. At the time pseudoephedrine, ephedrine, and phenylpropanolamine, were banned stimulants. He tested positive for them 3 times. He was supposed to be banned but US Olympic committee over turned the ruling siting that Lewis accidentally and unknowingly took the stimulants.

I'm a big fan of both by the way, but it seems you're trying to belittle Bolt's achievements compared to Johnson's. Plus Bolt has much tougher competition now due to the better available knowledge and technology. Both Johnson and Bolt are Legends!

What a brilliant analysis! Hats off! For me, the greatest single achievement from either of these 2 titans was MJ's 19.32. It was so staggering, it begged utter disbelief. A foreign commentator even wondered if the official time clock was working fine!

Born in the 90s so didn’t really know much about Johnson until I started watching track and field later on and saw his record. But i actually got the chance to witness All of Usain’s dominance. Incidentally, we attended the very same high school.

For Michael Johnson to produce his fastest 400m time in his final years at his age it is truly a great performance and Usain Bolt dominating the field whether he gave his all or not he had the best 100m comebacks of all time even when doubted and injured he gave the world a performance we can't forget they are great athletes

We did not factor in technology. Both running Shoe technology and running track material design has contributed to the ever reducing record times. Johnson may have been faster if competing with Bolt in the same era.

Michael Johnson is a huge idol of mine, and a brilliant pundit. However, Usain Bolt IMO is the single most captivating sportsman since Mohammed Ali. After Beijing he completely revolutionised athletics and athletics will most likely see a drop in popularity now he’s not competing sadly. His impact on the sport has been meteoric.

I’d give Bolt the edge in revolutionising the sprinting world simply because, before his appearance, we’ve been told for decades that tall sprinters weren’t even a thing and furthermore that you couldn’t beat WRs unless your running form was textbook. He did it his own way and he did it flawlessly.

Kudos to the guy putting this amazing video and numbers together, and for inspiring us with the achievements of both legends. It's really unnecessary to compare MJ and UB on an apple-to-apple basis. MJ is one of the greatest 400, and UB 100 and 200 - and i would leave it as that. If MJ and UB are here, they would probably toast to this simple thought.

I love track and field and have been a fan for over 65 years. The Olympic 400 where he ran anchor is the one race that always stands out in my mind. Michael Johnson's form was so beautiful. I loved watching the slow mo where you could really catch his beautiful form. I of course was a Usain Bolt fan as well. Being a USA Citizen of course I'm cheering for our team but I just appreciate all the great athletes ones no matter what country they competed for.

Both athletes were great in their own right - however, I will have to give Usain Bolt the edge, because even in the heats, stadiums were full just to see Bolt, particularly at the 2012 London Olympics, both in the 100 and 200m. Johnson only has just one remaining record that is yet to be broken; Bolt has more today, and as MJ said himself, the person that could break Usain's record, perhaps "hasn't even been born yet". He brought fun, charisma, he's transcended athletics, and taken it to a whole new plato.
P.s - MJ is brilliant at commentary when he is commenting on races👍
I think you left out a piece where you spoke of Micheal Johnson’s spectacular relay leg and world record run but you did not mentioned Usain Bolt’s awesome 8.8 4x100m world record run on the third leg hand off to asafa Powell 37.04 .
Bolt was the third leg? If so, that may be why, because the first and fourth leg splits are always the most accurate. Especially the first leg, because they are starting from a standstill instead of already moving when their individual split starts.
MJ was the man from his days in Baylor. I love that he was part of the 4x400 team that broke the WR at Mitchell Field (rescinded in 08 due to his relay men) as it was the unofficial home track for Uniondale HS where i attended. When he ran that 19.32 it was the most unbelievable sprinting race id ever seen until Bolt. Just want to shake his hand and say thank you for the memories.

Very interesting video, thank you. A reminder of just how good Johnson was. However, for me, Bolt gets the nod to have achieved his times/wins in THE ‘blue ribbon’ event (100m) of track & field that a) Every aspiring sprinter views as the one they want to win above all and b) an event that gives zero room for error or underperforming. No time to adjust or comeback. One mistake and you’ve lost.
The 400m is the hardest race there is though.

I had a traumatic childhood but summer of 96 I had a week with my paternal family side. I was surprised with a trip to Disneyland then flew to a week with my favorite aunt's house the night we got there MJ ran the 200 majestic to watch. Got to camp and other fun things for first time. After that summer started running with a bad crowd and then to drugs etc. Now I'm clean and am so blessed beyond what I deserve. Everytime I watch Atlanta Olympic clips I feel that innocence and carefree childhood feeling again.🇺🇸
