Maybe Opaline did try something before during Celestia and Luna's time. But like many other ancient villans, she was sealed away and only managed to get out during the time of Twilight and friends. But like with Cozy Glow, Opaline proved cunning, she bid her time, waiting to the perfect moment to strike. That's my theory at least.
I think Opaline was the one who corrupted Luna and made her transform into Nightmare Moon. I noticed something very peculiar about the first two episodes of G4 and the magical aura color that surrounded Nightmare Moon. If you look closely, there is a magenta glow surrounding Nightmare Moon that is the same color as Opaline’s magical aura. After Luna is purified from being Nightmare Moon, she no longer has the magenta glow and in every appearance of Nightmare Moon is also missing this colored aura. I have a theory that Starswirl had considered teaching Opaline as well but then he sensed darkness within her heart and he knew that darkness could easily spread and corrupt even the purest hearts so he forbade Celestia and Luna from having any interactions with Opaline out of fear that they would become corrupted. Celestia was able to do this since she has a stronger will to resist temptation but Luna thought that maybe Opaline could become good and tried to be friends but Opaline used Luna and played mind games using the insecurity Luna had over her thoughts that Celestia was the more favored alicorn and from here Opaline placed a curse on Luna that fed off of her insecurity and jealous until it eventually took over her mind. Celestia noticed this change in her sister and tried hard to find a way to break the curse but she realized that she couldn’t do it alone and sought the advice of a Pony that could see into the future. Celestia learned that Luna would eventually become Nightmare Moon and she would not be able to purify Luna’s corruption without the help of the Mane Six who wouldn’t be born for another 1000 years which is why she didn’t try using the Tree of Harmony’s powers by herself and banished her sister to the Moon until the time was right. This was something that Opaline had not expected but she knew that she was still safe as she lived outside of Equestria and could come up with a new evil plan undisturbed and unnoticed. The reason Celestia and Luna never brought up Opaline is because she hadn’t been seen or heard from in so long that they had no idea that she was still alive and out there. Discord knew of Opaline’s existence but since she kept to herself for so long and was living outside of Equestria, there was no need for him to mention her existence to the Mane Six as he thought she wasn’t a real threat. Discord was already imprisoned in stone whenever Luna had become Nightmare Moon so he didn’t know that Opaline caused the transformation by noticing the differently colored aura Nightmare Moon was giving off. This is also why he didn’t tell Tirek that there was one more alicorn out there that was powerful enough to cause trouble and for him to steal magic from.

Really glad you made a video on Opal knowing Celestia and Luna. Though I personally feel that we can't believe everything Opal says due to her lies and deceipt toward Misty, how she twists stories to suit her own personal narritive. Though I never thought about the connection between Opal and Starlight when it came to steeling the magic of cutie marks. It is an interesting idea.
Opaline is not a honest person, but her strong sense of nobility & pride means she has no reason to be insincere. -> Perhaps the sisters were not the ones disregarding her like it was implied, but it us clear that she DID felt that way. Opaline is never "weak", she is just (temporarily, not chronically) "compromised" by external circumstances. -> She is supposed to be powerful, dominating & adored. She is just doing what is neccesary to restore The Order towards what it was always "supposed" to be (correcting the mistakes a lowly born unicorn made with a power that did not belong to her).
Skyros existed in Journal of Two Sisters so its possible for Luna and Celestia to be raised with other alicorns. Zipp and Misty also discovered a book in the royal library with another Alicorn on the cover.
I will say this for the whole Opaline knowing Tia and Luna as foals... One of Amy Keating Rogers' books did mention a land of alicorns, though it just wasn't named. Could well have come from there. Plus that would explain the line Luna said about the birth of an alicorn being something Equestria has never seen. They were born elsewhere - this Skyros place.
I think Opaline was sealed away after trying something that involved dragon fire magic (considering her obsession) and that when the magic was lost her seal was broken. I wouldn't be surprised if whatever she did also (partially) lead to why the other species of Equestria didn't really interact with the ponies throughout the majority of Friendship is Magic.
I think she was the one to corrupt Luna and caused her Nightmare Moon transformation. If you examine the aura surrounding Nightmare Moon in the first two episodes of Friendship Is Magic, you’ll notice this magenta glow that matches Opaline’s magic and this aura is completely gone after Luna is freed from her curse and it never appears whenever Nightmare Moon is seen following these two episodes.
I think I already called this theory of Starlight (or at least a follower of hers) stealing half the cutie mark potential from all ponies. That's why G5 ponies only have one a piece. This technique isn't nearly as invasive as Starlight's original cutie mark theft, but it kept pony society weak and docile for generations.
Alternatively, maybe the ponies of Equestria freely donated half their magic to form the Unity Crystals and thus preserve magic. And Opaline, who actively wanted to sew unrest and disunity, took offence to this.
Although your theory is very good, one of the G5 film designer leader's has confirmed that cutie marks are like that because of the 3D models, it looked cleaner and just "better overall", nothings special on it
Opaline might have only had interest in being in charge when Skyros fell, since living in Skyros was better than living in Equestria. Skyros might have existed still in Twilight's time, but something happened to it. After that, Opaline decides that she is going to rule Equestria.
I agree that Opaline's story might not be accurate. A little more evidence that one can't just give somepony a cutie mark was when Applebloom had Twilight try to create one for her in season 1. Opaline might not need these crystals to swap or steal cutie marks. In Make Your Mark c2e5 - The Cutie Mark Mix-Up, Sparky's sneeze caused Hitch's and Sunny's cutie marks to switch around so it's possible that dragon fire might be able to steal and switch cutie marks. That's just my guess anyway.
My theory is that the sisters found out about opaline’s plan and decided to stop her by trapping her in her castle, which before she was trapped she found misty.
I like how Chapter 4 of Make Your Mark explored a little more into the lore of G5 as well as giving us some amazing characterisation with Misty. Some people didn’t think G5 had much potential, but it’s gotten quite a bit more of it now.
Well, one very important thing to remember about Starlight stealing cutiemarks was that it was later revealed that Maud helped her. With the fact that she only ever did the cutiemark removal spell in the cave. Could mean that there’s a rare type of crystal that is needed for such a thing. Starlight could swap the marks without them, but she never tried to remove them, except in the cave. (the funny thing is until now I never even realize that)

i have a theory maybe the reason Opaline didnt move against the sisters more spisificly celestya is because of her dominion over the sun because of that Opaline may have been outmached in her own element
Opaline didn't lie to Misty, she had the power to give her a Cutie Mark... just not a magical way. During the last episode "Missing the Mark" there is a moment where Misty had a choice: Let Opaline drain Spraky and dispose of him, gaining her admiration and helping the "Evil" to triumph , or help the Mane 5 to rescue Sparky. In the End we saw she took one choice, but I am certain that by letting Opaline win, she would obtained her cutie mark too.
I think you might be onto something with these theories Doc, Because I for one could totally picture Opaline possibly stumbling upon books or notes written by Starlight and then Opaline would use what she learned to steal the Mane 5's cutie marks.

In my school vr game, Skyris is confirmed to be the alicorn City, and it uses a very interesting method of camouflage the way its camouflage is using pergatario and its make the entire city disappear from the map (Seriously in the game gigaverse where that use to be is now the location of Galahorn hq)
I would say her backstory is plausible, but I kind of gathered that ponies were not born alicorns, and that perhaps Celestia had gotten wings when she had raised the sun for the first time (as referenced in 'Horse Play'), perhaps meaning she has magic of all three pony kinds? If this were the case then I would wonder how old she was in this backstory. Though it's never stated in Horse Play that she was a unicorn at the time, only 'a student', but given "the birth of an alicorn is something Equestria has never seen", it just feels off that Opaline would both know the sisters from a young age and be an alicorn herself at the time.
I would like to hear Princess Celestia and Luna's side of the story if they do return in the next MLP: Make Your Mark Chapter because I'm getting a feelings that Opaline wasn't telling the whole truth about her past. I mean the way she discribe her backstory to Misty she looks bitterly jealous and angry as for Misty at the end of this episode I'm hoping that she had left Opaline's castle for good now that she finally got her cutie mark at last and join the 5 maines into help them to defeat Opaline once and for all.
Or, Starlight found Opaline's writings and used Her spell, as we know Starlight was researching a lot of unknown Pony Sorcerer's and Sorcereress's throughout MLP. This may solve the question "were Celestia and Luna born Alicorns" because if Opaline was born one then whose to say this Skyris isn't where All Alicorns came from? It sounds like it would have been a Castle in the Sky scenario, a hidden world just for those who have Wings and Unicorn magic. Then again it could just be Opaline boasting about herself and maybe she, along with a few other Unicorn and Pegasi were gifted Elemental connections like how Celestia and Luna were drawn to raising the Sun and Moon respectfully. So, Opaline is connected to Fire and was supposed to work along side Celestia and Luna as a Keeper of Fire and Balance to those also connected to it, like Dragons. Just my two cents on this new revelation.
I was shocked to see the flashback with Celestia and Luna, she is as old as them. As for the upcoming special, I really do not know what to expect. Maybe something with Starlight Glimmer, maybe not. We will have to wait and see what happens.
I was actually surprised to see Celestia and Luna in G5, even if in a flashback regarding Opaline's history with them, Dr. Wolf. It makes things a little more interesting regarding what Opaline must have been doing in the years while Celestia and Luna ruled Equestria before passing the reigns onto Twilight.
Opaline being as old as Celestia and Luna was not surprising just like existence of Skyros. If you read Journal of Two Sisters then you should be aware that this place and more Alicorns would exist. OMG this is literally Princess Trixie Sparkle. Opaline is a stand-in for Astelle and Misty is like Trixie. Evil alicorn queen who new the royal sisters and is probably family and her "henchpony" turn on her. Is the biggest threat they've ever faced. Holy hell... On a side note: anybody else getting Cozy Glow vibes? I mean, stealing all the magic and stuff... seems pretty familiar..
I was glad to see some back story. Also her title of Queen is still interesting. Is it self proclaimed? We know Luna and Celestia were not born alicorn due to their reaction of the birth of Flurry. But we also know they often hide truth. I do believe Opaline could have been even older then the princess sister. With her being an elemental alicorn. It is even possible that Dragon actually come from her. Maybe this is what had happened to her all those years. She was perhaps powerless after her magic was stole and use to make dragons. After all , if all magic returned to equestria why didn't her magic did aswell ? This means her magic was probably weak before the whole sealing up of magic. As for the cutie marks. Perhaps this is where starlight even found the idea or information on the magic. Perhaps she never invented that magic in the first place. It is possible that it was Opaline's magic all along but starlight found the scrolls and talking mirror to nodge her the right way. Anyways, i love Opaline and i really wish she would at one point grow beyond her Mother gothel ( Rapunzel) person. I feel this is twilight great failure, just like cozy and the others. She failed to show them friendship. She failed to understand them and Fix their hatred with Kindness, generosity, honesty , laughter and loyalty. In the end, friendship lost. Even in G4 people might simply haven't seen it this way, but from my view, they did.
I was quite surprised to see the Royal Sisters again and I think Opaline could be like the black sheep of the family. I was wondering if the crystals could be the key to finding Starlight. If Starlight is alive, could she be an alicorn? Since we heard there is a world for alicorns could Twilight still be alive, and could she be hiding in the alicorn world? If Twilight is still alive what about her friends? When I saw the chest again from Friendship is Magic could that play a part in Secrets of Starlight?

We will probably just see her recorded message on crystals. I think grand finale is going to be older Twilight and Spike appeareaing in person as a huge cliff hanger.
I very much hope that within G5, in the next issues, we will see Celestia, Luna, find out what happened to Twilight. In the meantime, there are too many plot holes, but if they are alive and somehow integrated into this generation, then this will be great news. If this happens, then I will be very happy, because this is my favorite trio.
I have a feeling that opaline is going to steal the fives cutie marks and use their power for herself. I mean the opaline toy shows her with flaming wing with fire ball's containing the mane fives marks. I feel if it's the same with the misty toy and her cutie mark.

Sawtooth Waves ( I really hope he comes back) had a theory that Starswirl created the Alicorns, but he also had an earlier theory in which he believed that Celestia and Luna came from an Olympus-style civilization where the inhabitants were alicorns. So do you think he was correct, or are Celestia, Luna and Opaline the exceptions of their home?
I am mostly curious if there are other elemental alucorns such as water, air and earth. From what I could see Celestia represent day a.k.a. the light and Luna represents night a.k.a. darkness and finally The main villain representing fire

As far I could only tell, my guess Celestia and Luna didn't care about Opaline and just abandon her like they don't need her, seems to me they're the ones who doomed Equestria from the very beginning of Friendship is Magic scenario and the beginning of Season 1, Elements of Harmony Arc. Opaline hid herself away from the two after neglecting her and waited years later in the future, that's another thing about cutiemarks fueled with magic, why did Starlight Glimmer stole cutiemarks replacing with equal signs, unless she might've saw something in the future of Equestria.

I think Princess Sunny Starscout is the Element of Magic, because just like Princess Twilight Sparkle, she is the new leader of the new Mane Six and she is the new Monarch of all Equestria, that is, she is the new Princess Ruler of all Equestria, while Princess Zipp Storm is the Element of Loyalty, because like Rainbow Dash, she is the most rebellious and the most athletic member of the team, Princess Pipp Petals is the Element of Generosity, because like Rarity, she is the most elegant and the most beautiful member of the team, Izzy Moonbow is the Element of Laughter, because like Pinkie Pie, she is the most cheerful and the most funniest member of the team, Misty Brightdawn is the Element of Kindness, because like Fluttershy, she is the most shyest and the most kindest member of the team, and Hitch Trailblazer is the Element of Honesty, because like Applejack, he is the most honest and the most responsible member of the team.
Opaline knowing celestia and Luna was not something i had expected and it seemed to conflict with many things in g4 but as some others in the comments brought up it is plausible. I also loved their designs in g5 as well as giving luna a design closer to her season 1 appearance (also rip the celestia had pink hair when she was younger theory.) personally im leaning more towards the crystals being a coincidence and that's just what crystals look like in g5. Now that things are picking up in the lore and action department im excited to see where things go from here and really hope that they dont screw up things like they did last time we were all hopeful something could be done.
The FIM books (especially Journal of the Two Sisters) mentioned multiple alicorns, some of which trained with the Princesses on Mount Canterlot, while others taught them. Maybe it’s the fanfic enthusiast in me, but that thread is rich with potential for long-forgotten friends and rivals of Celestia and Luna. Perhaps Opaline was a second-rate student of exceptionally long life, who grew to resent the Sisters (and perhaps due to being imprisoned as other commenter’s suggested).
If celestia,luna and opaline were filly at this time so opaline is way older and if she is alive so that means celestia and luna may be alive somewhere in equestria maybe opaline turned them in to stone along with twilight and maybe there hidden in a cave or something

What if... imagine if Opaline was somehow related to Starlight Glimmer in some way, maybe/probably not exactly Starlight's unseen mother but perhaps some sort of close ancestor..?
Personal theory on how she took so long, Celestia and Luna got a royal escort to Equestria while Opaline tried to get there herself and got lost along the way. Also my idea is that Opaline used the now Unity Crystals to slowly but surly take away pony magic so she’d have way more power on her side before eventually getting to Twilight who pulled a 180 and used the Crystals to take all of Opaline’s power and distribute it to the ponies along with other creatures she might have sucked power from thus explaining why she was so dead set on getting the crystals after learning that it was the way ponies regained magic. Also sorry if this is real long but this theory of mine is just so interesting in my opinion.
It might even be a case of her 'Believing in her own lies' even if she is sincere about what she's saying, a way to justify her own lust for power and petty envy.
Opaline couldn't have known the princesses as fowls. If she did, and she's still alive today, where are all the Princesses? A dozen+ centuries, maybe even a couple Melania, have passed since their childhoods, and she's the only survivor? Did she kill the others? She appeared in the prime of life so, "going any day" doesn't seem likely. This raises so many, ultimately, repetitious questions that either Oplaline is lying to make herself sound and feel more powerful, or the writers have simply written themselves into a corner.
If she was there growing up with them, you'd assume she would have tried to steal magic from all ponies right after luna became nightmare moon and was sealed away. Cuz right after the sealing of nightmare moon, celestia would have been adjusting to life as the sole ruler of equestria. Though it would explain what caused the timeline where equestria becomes a wasteland in the season 5 finale. I always wondered what villain would gave led to a scorched wasteland. If Opaline already existed in the world according to this new lore, then her taking pony magic and destroying all who stood in her way, and no mane 6 to stop her cuz if starlight's tampering in the timeline, it could give us that explanation after so long of us not knowing. And that might just be what secrets of starlight will show us, that while opaline did fail in this timeline, she eventually took starlight's secrets of cutie mark control/removal and her time travel spell. And opaline then gies back in time, thinking things would change fir her if she were to stop the mane 6. But then she actually just leads to the wasteland timeline, which only makes starlight join the good side, which opaline didn't expect would be her own fault. Thus she herself creates a self caused loop paradox like twilight did in her first time travel episode. She creates the wasteland, starlight thinks her own actions caused it, and it leads to her fixing the tomeline, which eventually leads to opaline stealing magic many years later, leading to twilight's sacrifice and the sealing of all magic in equestria, which leads to g5, which leads to opaline discovering time travel, which leads to her going back in time, causing the wasteland, and it loops.

I think Opaline is just a delusional, power hungry equine who wants to rule everything just because she's an Alicorn, and her explaining her back story of when she knew Celestia and Luna, and talked about them or something, is utter nonsense.
I suspect on the cutie mark bit, Opaline was merely lying to Misty to keep her help. But that now adds new danger to the narrative. Once Opaline discovers Misty has a cutie mark, she will consider useless, and there's no telling what Opaline will do with her. As for the sisters and Opalines past, if you think back, the writers were always bringing new stuff out of the blue.
i asume i am the only one but so far i love the way fim ponies look in 3d cgi they look way better then they did in fim and so many ? about alicorn and if luna and celestia where born as alicorn and where royal sisters who was thier parents where they king andqueens of the alicorn lands
The more answers G5 gives, the more questions pop up. I look at this situation as Goob from The Robinsons, who's so obsessed about something bad happening in his past that he starts seeing everything as dark and dreary. So when he went past a pair of guys who invited him to hang out with them, he went "Everybody hated me." That's more likely what's happened with Opaline because, you know, SHE'S THE VILLAIN. Also, last I checked, the reason Starlight was able to take somebody's cutie mark is that she was so powerful, she's on the magic level of both Twilight and Star Swirl.

One thing I notice, is that I don't see anyone noticing a possible connection in the comments. We know that Opaline might have grown up with the sisters. We know that alicorns definitely live thousands of years. Isn't it a possibility that the royal sisters are also alive? I know that we haven't seen them yet, not even in the last episode of G4. It is a possibility that they passed away of old age, but an unlikely one. I believe it is more likely that they went into retirement, or possibly hibernation. Their bodies went to rest while their magic unconsciously raised and lowered the sun and moon all those years into G5. As for their magic still being with them as the rest fell, their hibernation would allow them to preserve their love of all ponies, keeping the magic they had. Another possibility is that their magic was so ancient that it wasn't affected by the division of pony kind, much like the magic that was possessed by alicorns and unicorn before they made up in the first place. But I like the first one better. So, fingers crossed, there is a possibility that the Mane 5 will reawaken the royal sisters, and maybe some other alicorns like Twilight, Cadence, and maybe a grown-up version of Flurry Heart, who went into hibernation to preserve magic. This hibernation theory will also explain exactly what Opaline has been doing during the course of G4: sleeping! She was waiting for a time that the pony kinds would divide and she would wake up. Of course, waking up like that would take a while, so she would learn about the war in history textbooks. She would read them, then put her own spin on them, and eventually come to believe it herself, and tell it to Misty (best G5 pony) who would not know any better. Of course, I don't have any theories about how she acquired Misty yet, but that's a story for another time. The point is, It's a strong possibility, and one I'm looking forward to, that the royal sisters awaken and bring their magic to the world.
It was my impression that Puddinghead, Platinum, and Hurricane founded Equestria, then the Pillars took over, and then Celestia and Luna took over, so I'm not sure about this implying that Opaline has been around since before the founding of Equestria, but it's still crazy that this does imply she's over two thousand years old, perhaps three thousand since Twilight probably ruled just as long as Celestia and Luna and then it was thousands of moons, or months, since Twilight.
I thought it raised SO MANY questions for me, but overall it seems as though the writers are trying to keep G4 fans interested by using 'memberberries. I'm hoping that "The Secrets of Starlight" does refer Ms. Glimmer, but I wouldn't put it past the producers actually talk about the secrets of light given off by the stars, knowing there will be a lot of G4 fans tuning in to see Starlight Glimmer. Even her haters (I'm looking at you Wilsonator).
Starlight's true name is "Glimmer Auroral Star Light" -> Her father's name is Fire Light, Twilight's father is Night Light, both are related to the same "young unicorn" who befriended Scorpan [NOT Star_Swirl, from who Cup Cake (Chiffon Swirl) is distantly related].

How many Smith and Jones are there? Are they related?
i keep making little changes to what could've lead based on what was told but right now, my theory of what happened goes like this. I'm always changing it though lol. 1. at first, she wanted attention from the royal sisters and from the sound of it, they didn't want any part of her around. I gonna guess that there a good reason for that, it probably due to how Opaline see any pony that's not a alicorn more or less just there to be used. 2. Opaline probably didn't really just up and vanished so much as she probably learned how to make her powers greater than they originally are, to the point she became a bit of a threat so she might've got sealed away in a place similar to where other big villains ended up but much more secretive. 3. something probably happen way down the road and Opaline maybe got freed? at this point she might've got much stronger somehow and became so much of a threat that the only way to disable her from actually taking over when all else failed was to split the magic using the crystals, one given to each tribe before she could actually obtain them, I not really sure how she got weaker over time though, that part is too hard to figure out still, maybe there a reason you can't find the dragons anymore though, least not easily. Finally we can already tell why she be a big problem, she basically splitting rocks cleanly in the middle at her weakest magic, can only imagine if she had actual power. sorry for so much text over how her past might've been but it just a theory.
Its possible with Celestia and Luna being in charge of day and night they became glory hogs and shoved her away to the point where like Luna she went down a dark path but unlike Luna she didn't have anyone who cared about her and she worked for years to teach them a lesson.
There was also the cutie mark potion that applebloom made, as another source of cutiemark magic. Also they do say in the show alicorns are able to take other forms of magic, so that should include cutiemarks, no starlight magic needed. If fact maybe starlight learned her cutiemark magic from an alicorn spell
I just woke up from dream that Opaline was corrupted Starlight who got jealous of Twilight years after she got to be ruler of Equestria just as Starlight was ruler of her village that was taken from her which made her bad side take over again and "wants to take back what is hers". And the new series Secrets of Starlight would show us Starlight that was defeated complately by new mane 6 and turns back to her normal form just like Luna came after being defeated as nightmare moon 😳 of course that's was just a weird vision in dream but come to think of it Starlight kinda resemble opaline not only about looks (colour themes, teal streaks in their mane, even their cutie marks are simmilar, you can "create" Opaline cutie mark by turning direction of one of the "flame" in Starlight's cutiemark what would symbolize Starlight turning the good direction she started) as much as character simmilarities, both are great manipulators, liers, and power hungry. Both are powerful at magic. And interesting fact is that in comics Opaline is first seen as unicorn, we don't see Starlight anywhere around too. Also we know on example of Cozy Glow that it is possible to become alicorn without accomplishing something great. It's so interesting to me 🤣🤣🤣
Maybe Opaline did try something before during Celestia and Luna's time. But like many other ancient villans, she was sealed away and only managed to get out during the time of Twilight and friends. But like with Cozy Glow, Opaline proved cunning, she bid her time, waiting to the perfect moment to strike. That's my theory at least.

I think Opaline was the one who corrupted Luna and made her transform into Nightmare Moon. I noticed something very peculiar about the first two episodes of G4 and the magical aura color that surrounded Nightmare Moon. If you look closely, there is a magenta glow surrounding Nightmare Moon that is the same color as Opaline’s magical aura. After Luna is purified from being Nightmare Moon, she no longer has the magenta glow and in every appearance of Nightmare Moon is also missing this colored aura. I have a theory that Starswirl had considered teaching Opaline as well but then he sensed darkness within her heart and he knew that darkness could easily spread and corrupt even the purest hearts so he forbade Celestia and Luna from having any interactions with Opaline out of fear that they would become corrupted. Celestia was able to do this since she has a stronger will to resist temptation but Luna thought that maybe Opaline could become good and tried to be friends but Opaline used Luna and played mind games using the insecurity Luna had over her thoughts that Celestia was the more favored alicorn and from here Opaline placed a curse on Luna that fed off of her insecurity and jealous until it eventually took over her mind. Celestia noticed this change in her sister and tried hard to find a way to break the curse but she realized that she couldn’t do it alone and sought the advice of a Pony that could see into the future. Celestia learned that Luna would eventually become Nightmare Moon and she would not be able to purify Luna’s corruption without the help of the Mane Six who wouldn’t be born for another 1000 years which is why she didn’t try using the Tree of Harmony’s powers by herself and banished her sister to the Moon until the time was right. This was something that Opaline had not expected but she knew that she was still safe as she lived outside of Equestria and could come up with a new evil plan undisturbed and unnoticed. The reason Celestia and Luna never brought up Opaline is because she hadn’t been seen or heard from in so long that they had no idea that she was still alive and out there. Discord knew of Opaline’s existence but since she kept to herself for so long and was living outside of Equestria, there was no need for him to mention her existence to the Mane Six as he thought she wasn’t a real threat. Discord was already imprisoned in stone whenever Luna had become Nightmare Moon so he didn’t know that Opaline caused the transformation by noticing the differently colored aura Nightmare Moon was giving off. This is also why he didn’t tell Tirek that there was one more alicorn out there that was powerful enough to cause trouble and for him to steal magic from.

Opaline is not a honest person, but her strong sense of nobility & pride means she has no reason to be insincere.

Skyros existed in Journal of Two Sisters so its possible for Luna and Celestia to be raised with other alicorns. Zipp and Misty also discovered a book in the royal library with another Alicorn on the cover.
Well I wouldn't be surprised if her story is similiar with Astelle's, the alicorn from Princess Trixie Sparkle

One of Amy Keating Rogers' books did mention a land of alicorns, though it just wasn't named. Could well have come from there. Plus that would explain the line Luna said about the birth of an alicorn being something Equestria has never seen. They were born elsewhere - this Skyros place.
And in Skyros, it makes sense for an Alicorn to be born.
I think Opaline was sealed away after trying something that involved dragon fire magic (considering her obsession) and that when the magic was lost her seal was broken.
I wouldn't be surprised if whatever she did also (partially) lead to why the other species of Equestria didn't really interact with the ponies throughout the majority of Friendship is Magic.
I think she was the one to corrupt Luna and caused her Nightmare Moon transformation. If you examine the aura surrounding Nightmare Moon in the first two episodes of Friendship Is Magic, you’ll notice this magenta glow that matches Opaline’s magic and this aura is completely gone after Luna is freed from her curse and it never appears whenever Nightmare Moon is seen following these two episodes.

I think I already called this theory of Starlight (or at least a follower of hers) stealing half the cutie mark potential from all ponies. That's why G5 ponies only have one a piece.
This technique isn't nearly as invasive as Starlight's original cutie mark theft, but it kept pony society weak and docile for generations.
Alternatively, maybe the ponies of Equestria freely donated half their magic to form the Unity Crystals and thus preserve magic.
And Opaline, who actively wanted to sew unrest and disunity, took offence to this.
Although your theory is very good, one of the G5 film designer leader's has confirmed that cutie marks are like that because of the 3D models, it looked cleaner and just "better overall", nothings special on it

Opaline might have only had interest in being in charge when Skyros fell, since living in Skyros was better than living in Equestria. Skyros might have existed still in Twilight's time, but something happened to it. After that, Opaline decides that she is going to rule Equestria.

I agree that Opaline's story might not be accurate. A little more evidence that one can't just give somepony a cutie mark was when Applebloom had Twilight try to create one for her in season 1. Opaline might not need these crystals to swap or steal cutie marks. In Make Your Mark c2e5 - The Cutie Mark Mix-Up, Sparky's sneeze caused Hitch's and Sunny's cutie marks to switch around so it's possible that dragon fire might be able to steal and switch cutie marks. That's just my guess anyway.

I like how Chapter 4 of Make Your Mark explored a little more into the lore of G5 as well as giving us some amazing characterisation with Misty. Some people didn’t think G5 had much potential, but it’s gotten quite a bit more of it now.

Well, one very important thing to remember about Starlight stealing cutiemarks was that it was later revealed that Maud helped her.
With the fact that she only ever did the cutiemark removal spell in the cave. Could mean that there’s a rare type of crystal that is needed for such a thing.
Starlight could swap the marks without them, but she never tried to remove them, except in the cave.

Opaline didn't lie to Misty, she had the power to give her a Cutie Mark... just not a magical way. During the last episode "Missing the Mark" there is a moment where Misty had a choice: Let Opaline drain Spraky and dispose of him, gaining her admiration and helping the "Evil" to triumph , or help the Mane 5 to rescue Sparky.
In the End we saw she took one choice, but I am certain that by letting Opaline win, she would obtained her cutie mark too.

In my school vr game, Skyris is confirmed to be the alicorn City, and it uses a very interesting method of camouflage the way its camouflage is using pergatario and its make the entire city disappear from the map (Seriously in the game gigaverse where that use to be is now the location of Galahorn hq)

I would say her backstory is plausible, but I kind of gathered that ponies were not born alicorns, and that perhaps Celestia had gotten wings when she had raised the sun for the first time (as referenced in 'Horse Play'), perhaps meaning she has magic of all three pony kinds? If this were the case then I would wonder how old she was in this backstory. Though it's never stated in Horse Play that she was a unicorn at the time, only 'a student', but given "the birth of an alicorn is something Equestria has never seen", it just feels off that Opaline would both know the sisters from a young age and be an alicorn herself at the time.
I would like to hear Princess Celestia and Luna's side of the story if they do return in the next MLP: Make Your Mark Chapter because I'm getting a feelings that Opaline wasn't telling the whole truth about her past. I mean the way she discribe her backstory to Misty she looks bitterly jealous and angry as for Misty at the end of this episode I'm hoping that she had left Opaline's castle for good now that she finally got her cutie mark at last and join the 5 maines into help them to defeat Opaline once and for all.
Or, Starlight found Opaline's writings and used Her spell, as we know Starlight was researching a lot of unknown Pony Sorcerer's and Sorcereress's throughout MLP. This may solve the question "were Celestia and Luna born Alicorns" because if Opaline was born one then whose to say this Skyris isn't where All Alicorns came from? It sounds like it would have been a Castle in the Sky scenario, a hidden world just for those who have Wings and Unicorn magic. Then again it could just be Opaline boasting about herself and maybe she, along with a few other Unicorn and Pegasi were gifted Elemental connections like how Celestia and Luna were drawn to raising the Sun and Moon respectfully. So, Opaline is connected to Fire and was supposed to work along side Celestia and Luna as a Keeper of Fire and Balance to those also connected to it, like Dragons. Just my two cents on this new revelation.
I was shocked to see the flashback with Celestia and Luna, she is as old as them. As for the upcoming special, I really do not know what to expect. Maybe something with Starlight Glimmer, maybe not. We will have to wait and see what happens.

I was actually surprised to see Celestia and Luna in G5, even if in a flashback regarding Opaline's history with them, Dr. Wolf. It makes things a little more interesting regarding what Opaline must have been doing in the years while Celestia and Luna ruled Equestria before passing the reigns onto Twilight.

We know Luna and Celestia were not born alicorn due to their reaction of the birth of Flurry. But we also know they often hide truth.
I do believe Opaline could have been even older then the princess sister. With her being an elemental alicorn.
It is even possible that Dragon actually come from her. Maybe this is what had happened to her all those years. She was perhaps powerless after her magic was stole and use to make dragons.
After all , if all magic returned to equestria why didn't her magic did aswell ? This means her magic was probably weak before the whole sealing up of magic.
As for the cutie marks. Perhaps this is where starlight even found the idea or information on the magic. Perhaps she never invented that magic in the first place. It is possible that it was Opaline's magic all along but starlight found the scrolls and talking mirror to nodge her the right way.
Anyways, i love Opaline and i really wish she would at one point grow beyond her Mother gothel ( Rapunzel) person. I feel this is twilight great failure, just like cozy and the others. She failed to show them friendship. She failed to understand them and Fix their hatred with Kindness, generosity, honesty , laughter and loyalty.
In the end, friendship lost. Even in G4 people might simply haven't seen it this way, but from my view, they did.
I was quite surprised to see the Royal Sisters again and I think Opaline could be like the black sheep of the family. I was wondering if the crystals could be the key to finding Starlight. If Starlight is alive, could she be an alicorn? Since we heard there is a world for alicorns could Twilight still be alive, and could she be hiding in the alicorn world? If Twilight is still alive what about her friends? When I saw the chest again from Friendship is Magic could that play a part in Secrets of Starlight?
They were old already in S9. They would have to be dead. Only Twilight, Spike and other Alicorns could possibly still exist.

I very much hope that within G5, in the next issues, we will see Celestia, Luna, find out what happened to Twilight. In the meantime, there are too many plot holes, but if they are alive and somehow integrated into this generation, then this will be great news.

As far I could only tell, my guess Celestia and Luna didn't care about Opaline and just abandon her like they don't need her, seems to me they're the ones who doomed Equestria from the very beginning of Friendship is Magic scenario and the beginning of Season 1, Elements of Harmony Arc. Opaline hid herself away from the two after neglecting her and waited years later in the future, that's another thing about cutiemarks fueled with magic, why did Starlight Glimmer stole cutiemarks replacing with equal signs, unless she might've saw something in the future of Equestria.

I think Princess Sunny Starscout is the Element of Magic, because just like Princess Twilight Sparkle, she is the new leader of the new Mane Six and she is the new Monarch of all Equestria, that is, she is the new Princess Ruler of all Equestria, while Princess Zipp Storm is the Element of Loyalty, because like Rainbow Dash, she is the most rebellious and the most athletic member of the team, Princess Pipp Petals is the Element of Generosity, because like Rarity, she is the most elegant and the most beautiful member of the team, Izzy Moonbow is the Element of Laughter, because like Pinkie Pie, she is the most cheerful and the most funniest member of the team, Misty Brightdawn is the Element of Kindness, because like Fluttershy, she is the most shyest and the most kindest member of the team, and Hitch Trailblazer is the Element of Honesty, because like Applejack, he is the most honest and the most responsible member of the team.
Opaline knowing celestia and Luna was not something i had expected and it seemed to conflict with many things in g4 but as some others in the comments brought up it is plausible. I also loved their designs in g5 as well as giving luna a design closer to her season 1 appearance (also rip the celestia had pink hair when she was younger theory.) personally im leaning more towards the crystals being a coincidence and that's just what crystals look like in g5. Now that things are picking up in the lore and action department im excited to see where things go from here and really hope that they dont screw up things like they did last time we were all hopeful something could be done.
The FIM books (especially Journal of the Two Sisters) mentioned multiple alicorns, some of which trained with the Princesses on Mount Canterlot, while others taught them. Maybe it’s the fanfic enthusiast in me, but that thread is rich with potential for long-forgotten friends and rivals of Celestia and Luna. Perhaps Opaline was a second-rate student of exceptionally long life, who grew to resent the Sisters (and perhaps due to being imprisoned as other commenter’s suggested).

What if... imagine if Opaline was somehow related to Starlight Glimmer in some way, maybe/probably not exactly Starlight's unseen mother but perhaps some sort of close ancestor..?
Personal theory on how she took so long, Celestia and Luna got a royal escort to Equestria while Opaline tried to get there herself and got lost along the way. Also my idea is that Opaline used the now Unity Crystals to slowly but surly take away pony magic so she’d have way more power on her side before eventually getting to Twilight who pulled a 180 and used the Crystals to take all of Opaline’s power and distribute it to the ponies along with other creatures she might have sucked power from thus explaining why she was so dead set on getting the crystals after learning that it was the way ponies regained magic. Also sorry if this is real long but this theory of mine is just so interesting in my opinion.

Opaline couldn't have known the princesses as fowls. If she did, and she's still alive today, where are all the Princesses? A dozen+ centuries, maybe even a couple Melania, have passed since their childhoods, and she's the only survivor? Did she kill the others? She appeared in the prime of life so, "going any day" doesn't seem likely. This raises so many, ultimately, repetitious questions that either Oplaline is lying to make herself sound and feel more powerful, or the writers have simply written themselves into a corner.
When I first seen them in G5 I was like "WAIT WHAT-" but I enjoyed the entire series! :)

If she was there growing up with them, you'd assume she would have tried to steal magic from all ponies right after luna became nightmare moon and was sealed away. Cuz right after the sealing of nightmare moon, celestia would have been adjusting to life as the sole ruler of equestria. Though it would explain what caused the timeline where equestria becomes a wasteland in the season 5 finale. I always wondered what villain would gave led to a scorched wasteland. If Opaline already existed in the world according to this new lore, then her taking pony magic and destroying all who stood in her way, and no mane 6 to stop her cuz if starlight's tampering in the timeline, it could give us that explanation after so long of us not knowing. And that might just be what secrets of starlight will show us, that while opaline did fail in this timeline, she eventually took starlight's secrets of cutie mark control/removal and her time travel spell. And opaline then gies back in time, thinking things would change fir her if she were to stop the mane 6. But then she actually just leads to the wasteland timeline, which only makes starlight join the good side, which opaline didn't expect would be her own fault. Thus she herself creates a self caused loop paradox like twilight did in her first time travel episode. She creates the wasteland, starlight thinks her own actions caused it, and it leads to her fixing the tomeline, which eventually leads to opaline stealing magic many years later, leading to twilight's sacrifice and the sealing of all magic in equestria, which leads to g5, which leads to opaline discovering time travel, which leads to her going back in time, causing the wasteland, and it loops.
So they were born Alicorns....

I think Opaline is just a delusional, power hungry equine who wants to rule everything just because she's an Alicorn, and her explaining her back story of when she knew Celestia and Luna, and talked about them or something, is utter nonsense.
I suspect on the cutie mark bit, Opaline was merely lying to Misty to keep her help. But that now adds new danger to the narrative.
Once Opaline discovers Misty has a cutie mark, she will consider useless, and there's no telling what Opaline will do with her.
As for the sisters and Opalines past, if you think back, the writers were always bringing new stuff out of the blue.

The more answers G5 gives, the more questions pop up.
I look at this situation as Goob from The Robinsons, who's so obsessed about something bad happening in his past that he starts seeing everything as dark and dreary. So when he went past a pair of guys who invited him to hang out with them, he went "Everybody hated me." That's more likely what's happened with Opaline because, you know, SHE'S THE VILLAIN.
Also, last I checked, the reason Starlight was able to take somebody's cutie mark is that she was so powerful, she's on the magic level of both Twilight and Star Swirl.
I wonder if she was sealed away for something, and the loss of magic freed her. And because she was sealed, she didn't age, like Luna.

One thing I notice, is that I don't see anyone noticing a possible connection in the comments.
We know that Opaline might have grown up with the sisters.
We know that alicorns definitely live thousands of years.
Isn't it a possibility that the royal sisters are also alive?
I know that we haven't seen them yet, not even in the last episode of G4. It is a possibility that they passed away of old age, but an unlikely one. I believe it is more likely that they went into retirement, or possibly hibernation. Their bodies went to rest while their magic unconsciously raised and lowered the sun and moon all those years into G5. As for their magic still being with them as the rest fell, their hibernation would allow them to preserve their love of all ponies, keeping the magic they had.
Another possibility is that their magic was so ancient that it wasn't affected by the division of pony kind, much like the magic that was possessed by alicorns and unicorn before they made up in the first place. But I like the first one better.
So, fingers crossed, there is a possibility that the Mane 5 will reawaken the royal sisters, and maybe some other alicorns like Twilight, Cadence, and maybe a grown-up version of Flurry Heart, who went into hibernation to preserve magic.
This hibernation theory will also explain exactly what Opaline has been doing during the course of G4: sleeping! She was waiting for a time that the pony kinds would divide and she would wake up. Of course, waking up like that would take a while, so she would learn about the war in history textbooks. She would read them, then put her own spin on them, and eventually come to believe it herself, and tell it to Misty (best G5 pony) who would not know any better.
Of course, I don't have any theories about how she acquired Misty yet, but that's a story for another time.
The point is, It's a strong possibility, and one I'm looking forward to, that the royal sisters awaken and bring their magic to the world.
I think Opaline is the sister of Celestia and Luna
It was my impression that Puddinghead, Platinum, and Hurricane founded Equestria, then the Pillars took over, and then Celestia and Luna took over, so I'm not sure about this implying that Opaline has been around since before the founding of Equestria, but it's still crazy that this does imply she's over two thousand years old, perhaps three thousand since Twilight probably ruled just as long as Celestia and Luna and then it was thousands of moons, or months, since Twilight.
I thought it raised SO MANY questions for me, but overall it seems as though the writers are trying to keep G4 fans interested by using 'memberberries.
I'm hoping that "The Secrets of Starlight" does refer Ms. Glimmer, but I wouldn't put it past the producers actually talk about the secrets of light given off by the stars, knowing there will be a lot of G4 fans tuning in to see Starlight Glimmer. Even her haters (I'm looking at you Wilsonator).
Starlight's true name is "Glimmer Auroral Star Light"

They may be talking about the light from the stars and not the unicorm.

i keep making little changes to what could've lead based on what was told but right now, my theory of what happened goes like this. I'm always changing it though lol.
1. at first, she wanted attention from the royal sisters and from the sound of it, they didn't want any part of her around. I gonna guess that there a good reason for that, it probably due to how Opaline see any pony that's not a alicorn more or less just there to be used.
2. Opaline probably didn't really just up and vanished so much as she probably learned how to make her powers greater than they originally are, to the point she became a bit of a threat so she might've got sealed away in a place similar to where other big villains ended up but much more secretive.
3. something probably happen way down the road and Opaline maybe got freed? at this point she might've got much stronger somehow and became so much of a threat that the only way to disable her from actually taking over when all else failed was to split the magic using the crystals, one given to each tribe before she could actually obtain them, I not really sure how she got weaker over time though, that part is too hard to figure out still, maybe there a reason you can't find the dragons anymore though, least not easily.
Finally we can already tell why she be a big problem, she basically splitting rocks cleanly in the middle at her weakest magic, can only imagine if she had actual power.

Its possible with Celestia and Luna being in charge of day and night they became glory hogs and shoved her away to the point where like Luna she went down a dark path but unlike Luna she didn't have anyone who cared about her and she worked for years to teach them a lesson.
There was also the cutie mark potion that applebloom made, as another source of cutiemark magic. Also they do say in the show alicorns are able to take other forms of magic, so that should include cutiemarks, no starlight magic needed. If fact maybe starlight learned her cutiemark magic from an alicorn spell
I just woke up from dream that Opaline was corrupted Starlight who got jealous of Twilight years after she got to be ruler of Equestria just as Starlight was ruler of her village that was taken from her which made her bad side take over again and "wants to take back what is hers". And the new series Secrets of Starlight would show us Starlight that was defeated complately by new mane 6 and turns back to her normal form just like Luna came after being defeated as nightmare moon 😳 of course that's was just a weird vision in dream but come to think of it Starlight kinda resemble opaline not only about looks (colour themes, teal streaks in their mane, even their cutie marks are simmilar, you can "create" Opaline cutie mark by turning direction of one of the "flame" in Starlight's cutiemark what would symbolize Starlight turning the good direction she started) as much as character simmilarities, both are great manipulators, liers, and power hungry. Both are powerful at magic. And interesting fact is that in comics Opaline is first seen as unicorn, we don't see Starlight anywhere around too. Also we know on example of Cozy Glow that it is possible to become alicorn without accomplishing something great. It's so interesting to me 🤣🤣🤣
