Joined your golf school out of guilt… My game has improved so much with your tutorials that I couldn’t watch another free video without giving something back to you Tom. Your lessons are so easy to understand and quick to apply on the course.
Tom ; you have my vote for best instructor I have ever seen ! I have been watching your videos & Im a true believer of your teaching methods & what you are trying to accomplish ! I’m 75 & I’m telling my grand children to forget everything grandpa has taught them & get on U Tube & watch your videos ! Our golf season in Michigan is short ! I’ve only played a dozen rounds & made 11 birdies & 1 Eagle ! I don’t normally get those kinds of results for an entire season ! I have a lot work to do but you have me on the right track ! Thanks Tom
What an *AWESOME* start to your season, Dennis!! Well done!! I sincerely appreciate your kind words, and I am very glad to know that you are benefiting from my instruction content and enjoying my teaching style!! Thanks also for sharing SagutoGolf with your grandkids; I hope my lessons help them so they can have plenty of fun times with their grandpa playing this great game!! Keep up the great work!! Tom
Helpful as usual! I've been working on all this and not flipping. It makes a huge difference to slow my swing down and stop trying to kill it the first day I try something new. I'm finally feeling what impact should feel like without using the hands/wrists in any way. Ironically, I feel impact more in my left hip and by rotating. But I still need to get the wrist hinge right at the top of the backswing. I lay the club down at the top and I can't seem to stop.
Getting that flip out of our swing really works wonders with regard to creating crispy, compressed impact, right??!! Well done!! As for your issue, here's a wrist hinge video that may help: ua-cam.com/video/ynLkzwK_SBg/v-deo.html Beyond that, I would suggest the online school ( saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga ) or a V1 swing video analysis ( app.v1sports.com/Saguto-Golf ) if you're still having trouble resolving this. Cheers! Tom
This is awesome! 54 year old inconsistent golfer that was taught to turn the hands over. At my best I played to a 19. Cannot wait to get to the range and change. Time to drop my scores and start having real fun. THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!
Sounds great, Scott - I hope it plays well for you! Saguto Golf school member here. I went out and played yesterday. Hit the ball a lot better than before. I was always either topping the ball or hitting the ground early. Just need to work on accuracy and distance. Thanks Tom!
Hi John, I'm glad to learn of your improvement since joining the online school! One great thing about this swing is that you can still achieve solid ball striking even at the most basic levels. This is why I oftentimes will refer students back to Chapter 2 of the Golf Swing Simplified course when they experience a hiccup or perceived setback. That chapter reinforces the body motions and the weight-forward component, and it culminates with what I call "The Best Golf Swing Practice Drill of All Time". Master that drill and you can then actually use the somewhat abbreviated swing it provides on the course and play very well with it! Beyond that, please keep in mind the V1 Swing Video Analysis - an effective and inexpensive service that I highly recommend to everyone in the school. I liken it to bringing your swing into the shop for a tune-up or minor repair. Scheduling one on a quarterly basis for preventive maintenance will do wonders for keeping things humming along nicely, and it's also a great tool for pinpointing and resolving any issues that arise. Here's what Pamela , a fellow enrolled school member, recently said about her personal V1 analysis: _"Hi Tom just wanted to let you know I’ve watched your video analysis four times now and I’m amazed at the detail you put into it. I look forward to practicing the drills . Thanks again And I will let you know how things progress."_ Thanks very much for your support and keep up the great work!! Tom
Saguto has completely changed the one aspect of my game I struggled with for so long. This has changed my game. I was a scooper instead of a flipper, but I got my hands in the situation. Very active. Now, the clubface feels so controlled. This is the Mac Daddy lesson here.

@SagutoGolf Thank you kind sir!! I was watching replays of slowmo professional swings and I'm starting to see the body release. Especially in practice swings and chip shots. Holding those hands steady, keeping that face square!!

My impact has improved substantially since watching and practicing your technique. I was taught to “roll” wrists and I wondered for years why I struggled with consistency. I have learned more from you in 3 months and I am striking the ball purely more often. If I hit a bad shot and old habit jumped in the swing. I have focused on this release since an earlier video and it works! Thanks!
Most of us were wrongly instructed to roll those wrists through impact, Tom, and that has sadly messed up far too many golfers for far too long. I'm very glad to know that this lesson - along with the previous anti-flipping impact drill episode (which I'm guessing is the other video you are referring to) - have resonated well with you and improved your ball striking! Thanks for sharing your success, and keep up the great work! Those old habits do not die easy, but the will eventually go away over time with properly applied effort! Tom
I love it Tom! Timing my flip under pressure is NO bueno! It simply does not work most the time and I`m down $2. Thinking this drill along with turning the shoulders, especially the left one will help with getting the club face pointing to the "sky" sorta speak. Thank you so much! I apreciate your command of the English language btw.
I'm glad this lesson resonated well with you, Patrick! Here's a good impact lesson if you want to double down on de-flippifying your swing: ua-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/v-deo.html ("De-flippifying"?? How's that for English language command?.... 😆😆) Keep up the great work!! TS

@@SagutoGolf thanks Tom! Just to further clarify I’ve actually joined this course which has truly helped me progress, I should’ve mentioned that haha Your instruction videos on UA-cam are also really informative. Thanks for all your efforts, now to break 80 with some crispy shots!
Excellently demonstrated Tom ,this action I think is very similar to an ice hockey slap shot and is the vision I have in my head when trying to replicate this one piece down the line action, thank you.
Absolutely taking this to the range this week, I've picked up a huge hook and it's deflating my game. Knew exactly what I was doing but couldn't work out how to fix it. Love your videos, thank you!
I'm glad you are enjoying my instruction content, Sam, and I hope this lesson helps you rid yourself of that pesky hook! By the way, here's another video from the archives that may pair well with it: ua-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/v-deo.html Have fun out there! Tom
So I took it to the range last night, I had a mare! The odd pure crispy kfc we want, the rest not good. Mind overload. I know I can do it, I've been hitting low 90's recently so it's a mind over matter thing. A dozen good shots I need to build the confidence back.
No worries, Sam - Swings aren't built in one practice session! Here's a link to my free mini-course if you'd like to learn about this swing in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/
Glad you cleared up that statement of Mr. Hogan’s, who said that he wished he had thee hands. His was mostly a body swing, with most of his power being generated by the legs and hips, not the hands. Thanks again for clearing this up.
Along these same lines, Chris, I think you may appreciate couple of other Hogan episodes: - ua-cam.com/video/iejRWhuB7y8/v-deo.html - ua-cam.com/video/ACvoHI6A-R8/v-deo.html TS
Dude! It's been dogging me for years that whole turning the wrist thing! Hours of being told to start turning the wrist on the down swing, and that sense of never knowing if I'm going to get the timing right! Mind you, when you connect properly, the ball really flies! But much prefer concentrating on simply keeping the arms straight at impact. Nice job!
No worries, Nicholas, as it'll really fly doing it this way as well - and with A LOT more consistency!!! You may appreciate the impact drill in this previous episode as it pairs quite nicely: ua-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/v-deo.html Thanks! Tom
Hi, Great stuff as usual. If looking head on we say that the head is at 12 o'clock & the ball is at 6 o'clock, we can look at the arms position after release at 3 o'clock. The right arm at 3 o'clock when looking at tour players is straight. It can easily be thought that to get the right arm straight at 3 o'clock we need to concentrate on straightening the right arm. However, if the left arm is straight at 3 o'clock, then the right arm has to be as well. So concentrate on the left arm through impact without rolling the right wrist into the shot. I hope this makes sense, if not I blame the great beer called Duvel which I have enjoyed today, Cheers, Mark B.
I'm working on this right now and its so hard dropping 40 yrs of wrist rotation. Feels and goes great though once I get ot right. Just saw Mike Malaska on Cogorno golf saying the same thing. Awesome, rarely seen insight. Thanks.
It's certainly a stubborn old habit to break, John, but it's definitely worth it. It's two different swing theories. For multiple decades, the hand release was the de facto PGA standard. It wasn't until about 2015 and later than the body rotation/stalled release became the standard. Both methods should still be taught because golfers have their own quirks on their swing. I can't do the modern rotational swing without EXTREME pain to my lower left back/buttocks. The hand-release swing is ideal for me because it allows me to play golf and also keep walking for the rest of the day. Also, for people with great hand-eye coordination, it's still a decent consistent swing, but definitely requires a lot of range time to build that muscle memory to make it work really well. I'd recommend most golfers use the modern rotational swing that Tom is advocating any day, but if you have a traditional swing because you've been playing for more than a decade, there's nothing wrong with continuing to use it.
I routinely suggest to golfers that they let their ball striking and shot shape be their guide, so if they are satisfied in that regard and their swing is not causing them any discomfort, then why even consider making a change, right? With regard to the body-friendliness of this system that I teach, a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built. As for the rolling or flipping "release", given the inability of most folks to spend sufficient time at the range to lock in the required exactness of this action - as you allude to - this notion has thus led many an amateur astray. It's not something that most pros are trying to actively manufacture during the split second that the clubhead is traveling a distance of approximately 6' while hurtling through space at speeds in excess of 100 mph. The forearms will naturally "trade places" from pre- to post-impact, but this should not be construed as a contrived move (although many a casual observer has gone down that rabbit hole). There really ought not be any active manipulation of the hands through the zone, and attempts to precisely time any such rolling or flipping - which does nothing for swing speed - has relegated many an amateur to the vast abyss of inconsistency and frustration. Thanks for your comment! Tom

So been struggling with my swing lately. I've watched all your videos and have been doing everything you've been teaching. Hogan arms, turn the shoulders, weight shift foward at impact, keep hands extended on the downswing/follow thru. But at impact/follow thru ive been holding off my release/not flipping. And swing feels terible....Watched an Eric Corgano video where he talks about throwing/releasing the club right after impact and ive been hitting it crispy almost everytime. Just weird since you really want it to happen naturally and I'm making a conscious effort to do it right after impact
@mptemplin, You know I'm not a fan of trying to contrive, manipulate, or time something in the swing. Unless you're hitting hundreds of balls a day this is the formula for consistent inconsistency. Anyone commenting on hear saying he is wrong really doesn't understand the golf swing. The best ball strikers all have a stable club face through impact. You may be able to create more speed rolling or flipping the club through impact but your accuracy will be different every day with every swing. Me personally would rather have control over distance... good work Tom!
I appreciate the validation, @78coupe!! In fact, I'll go even further and say that any active rolling is actually a swing speed killer. It just doesn't make sense to accumulate all that power through the proper geometric sequencing of the big muscles only to surrender it at the critical point with a contrived, timed flip of the smallest muscles in the entire equation! Thanks for your comment and support! Tom

Hard to say what "traditional" or "modern" means nowadays lol! This body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance swing system is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and it is modeled on empirical observations of the game's most prolific ball strikers - including those of yesteryear. As such it does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everyone in between, inclusive of the best players in the world. Watch any Tour event on TV and you'll see a significant number of players executing these motions, a fact corroborated by just how many of them have a very centered swing with the lead knee flexing and the trail leg straightening during the backswing, their lead arms on or very close to their tilted shoulder planes, and their hands deep behind their trail shoulder at the top. Thousands of folks across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result of learning this swing system through my online school, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. Compare and contrast that with the sad reality that despite all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. Epic failures within the realm of “conventional” instruction, perhaps??? So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, firing the hips, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed this lesson and I hope it performs well for you! Tom
Great video. I'm trying your training program out before joining your school. I have noticed that you keep your ball aligned with your left foot when hitting your shots. Am I seeing this incorrectly ?
Hi Paul, While you do have some leeway, in general once my students and members show some level of proficiency with the swing I suggest that they migrate to a stock ball position that is in the middle of the stance for short irons, two balls inside the lead heel for middle irons, and creeping more forward for the longer clubs - the farthest forward being even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver (with the stance width increasing as we move from shorter to longer clubs). From there they can make incremental tweaks to see how different positions affect impact quality and shot shape. For example, my personal preference - as you astutely noticed - tends to be a position that is slightly forward of prescribed. I hope you enjoy “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” free mini-course! Tom
@@SagutoGolf Thanks Tom for your valuable input. It’s a pleasure watching a your instructional videos. Will be joining your school shortly. Is membership limited only to USA residents? Is payment in US dollars? And lastly, do you accept payments on Interac payment system via on-line banking?
@Paul St-Denis - Online school membership is global and can be paid by credit/debit card or PayPal. The cost is $99 US per year. I'm very glad to know that you will be enrolling in the school!! Here is some preliminary advice to help you get off to a good start: 1) Regardless of a member's skill level, this swing necessitates a complete reboot for someone transitioning from a shift & lift swing (which is typically the case), and therefore it is imperative that one take sufficient time to ensure that the fundamental components are mastered. From the ground up there is nothing superfluous in the Stack & Tilt swing - in other words, everything with a purpose, and a purpose for everything. (For example, contrary to shift & lift where you may be taught to keep your trail foot perpendicular to the target line as a means of "creating resistance" in your trail side, in S&T we flare both feet out 10-20 degrees in order to facilitate a free flowing, inclined hip and shoulder turn.) I cannot emphasize this enough, as frustrations predominantly occur when students jump ahead in the curriculum without properly dedicating themselves to the foundational base upon which our consistently repeatable, powerful, low maintenance swing must be built. Chapter 1 of the Golf Swing Simplified program (GSS) and Part I of Get Out & Go Play (GOGP) both address this. 2a) GSS: One of the many great things about this swing is that you can achieve solid ball striking even at the most basic levels. This is why I oftentimes will suggest that students park themselves on Chapter 2 of the GSS course for an extended period of time after locking down Chapter 1's foundational elements. Chapter 2 reinforces the body motions and the weight-forward component, and it culminates with what I call "The Best Golf Swing Practice Drill of All Time". Work yourself sequentially and gradually through the chapter, and then commit yourself to that drill in Lesson 2.8. Learn it. Practice it. Master it. You can even use this partially abbreviated swing on the course and play quite well with it as it will provide plenty of distance. (It actually is the full swing minus just a couple of power accumulators.) Once you've got that down, you will be well prepared to move forward in the curriculum and well on your way towards taking ownership of YOUR swing! 2b) GOGP: This quick-start program is exactly as it sounds - it is designed to fast-track you out onto the course so you can have fun - and success - playing as you learn! Should you choose this path, everything in #1 above still applies, and as implied above in 2a you will still want to work through it sequentially and gradually, mastering each lesson before moving ahead to the next one. In this program, Drill #5 - The Flying Wedge is the one you'll want to park yourself on and nail down. 3) Also, as you progress always keep in mind the V1 Swing Video Analysis service, an effective and inexpensive service that I highly recommend to everyone in the school. I liken it to bringing your swing into the shop for a tune-up or minor repair. Scheduling one on a quarterly basis for preventive maintenance will do wonders for keeping things humming along nicely, and it's also a great tool for pinpointing and resolving any issues that arise. The process involves downloading the free V1 app and then submitting two videos to me through the app - one down-the-line (captured from your stance line, not the target line) and the other face-on. You'll find more information about the V1 Analysis halfway down this page on the Saguto.Golf site: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolf 4) Finally, please migrate over to the SagutoGolf Community Forum - which is included in your online school enrollment - and begin engaging with your fellow members. It only takes a minute or two to enroll - just go to your “My Courses” screen and you’ll see a link to get started. Once signed in you’ll be able to access and participate in the great dialogue that we are having on a variety of topics. You can start discussions, contribute to existing threads, post specific swing questions, make some new friends, and just share in the common bond of golfers from around the world seeking to improve their games and help others to do the same. I really think you’ll enjoy it! I look forward to assisting you through the school’s structured lessons and drills towards building a consistent, low maintenance, powerful, body-friendly swing that will bring your enjoyment of this great game to a new level! Tom
Oh benevolent one, this works wonders with irons but I'm having a hard time with the woods. I can keep that impact a few feet past the ball but the speed of the club quite literally pulls my arms over so I can't hold off as long as the irons. Is that normal due to the speed of the woods? Seems way more difficult to keep that face square when the shaft is parallel after impact.
Awesome - I'm glad this helped!! So, with regard to the erroneous notion that we need to manufacture some type of a rolling or flipping "release", given the inability of most folks to spend sufficient time at the range to lock in the required exactness of this action this misguided thought has led countless golfers astray. It's not something that most pros are trying to actively manufacture during the split second that the clubhead is traveling a distance of approximately 6' from parallel to parallel at speeds in excess of 100 mph. Yes - you are correct in that the forearms will naturally "trade places" from pre- to post-impact, but this should not be construed as a contrived move (although many a casual observer has gone down that rabbit hole). There really ought not be any active manipulation of the hands through the zone and attempts to precisely time any such rolling or flipping - which does nothing for swing speed - have relegated many an amateur to the vast abyss of inconsistency and frustration. Here are a few of my channel episodes that may help to clarify: - ua-cam.com/video/nsAHRb-zVEA/v-deo.html - ua-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/v-deo.html - ua-cam.com/video/zw7Rzstq4gY/v-deo.html Keep up the great work!! 1. To the Quik: Great Form! Perfect Lesson! 2. To the Point: Putting! What Form is as good as the form you used in this lesson? All the best, a golfer who likes to win! Performance & Excellence!
The is dwell time on the face during which the ball compresses and rebounds. If the face is square to the target at ‘impact’ i.e., initial contact, it will not be square to target when it releases off the face. So if the goal is for the ball to release square to the target at the bottom of the golf swing arc ) the ball need to be a bit further back on that arc line which also means the point of impact is slightly closer to the feet than where it comes off the face. It was only after I realized this and put the ball a bit further back and inside I started hitting straight shots.
It's all about ball flight rules and "the grid", Teddy. The stock shot shape for the Stack and Tilt swing is a push-draw, and this occurs when the club is approaching the ball on an in-to-out path, with the face being slightly open to the target line and slightly closed to the path. So yes - ball position does play an integral role in shot shaping! Tom
Like the lesson TS. Reminds me of move 1 of Joe Dante's 4 Magic Moves. You just have to resist the tendency to turn over the club and keep the face "looking" at the ball in both the back & downswing.
Indeed. Any contrived or active manipulations going back must then be undone to the exact degree coming through to have any chance of hitting it squarely. Extremely difficult to repeat consistently when there's only a fractional millisecond of time when the face is in contact with the ball. Cheers! Tom
I think the point is that the rolling of the wrist naturally will happen anyway as the follow through progresses around the body. The rotation of the lower body will help make this happen and position of the right hand being where it is, physics of the follow through make it look as if we are purposefully rolling the right wrist especially in slow motion. I agree that trying to roll the wrist more will only add to inconsistency. I think instructors sometimes might teach this as a "quick fix" for students who they know won't put in the time to work on lower body turn/mechanics.
Any perceived "rolling" of the wrists is an optical illusion that has caused far too many amateurs far too much anguish. You are correct in saying that "physics of the follow through make it look as if we are purposefully rolling the right wrist", whereas in actuality the forearms are just trading places from the underside of the lead arm facing skyward in the backswing to the underside of the trail arm facing skyward post-impact. There is no active rotation, and any attempt to add some would be ill-conceived unless one has the time to hit a thousand balls a day every day!
Thanks @krys chiou! Sadly, many misconstrued or erroneous teachings of "conventional" instruction - such as trying to actively roll the hands through impact - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration. We're doing our best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness! Cheers, Tom
The other day I was hooking the ball .before switching to stack and tilt I was a slicer lost the slice after awhile of the new swing but I could not figure out the hook I think I may have been rolling the arms thanks cant wait to work on this.
As I've been saying to others here, Garry, try pairing it with this anti-flipping impact video from my channel that originally aired last year - ua-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/v-deo.html - as you'll find that they compliment each other quite well. Thanks! Tom
This is probably the reason why I was hooking the ball last year. Pro golfer Charlie Wi advocated a similar release and commented about wasted energy past a certain point.
You sure can get a variety of ball flights from trying to "time the release", Rick, with a hook being one of the more common consequences of rolling those hands. Here's another anti-flipping impact video from my channel that originally aired last year: ua-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/v-deo.html. I think you'll find that it supplements this one quite well. Thanks for your comment! Tom
I truly appreciate your kind words and support, @lon soles!! Have you watched the Impact Drill lesson video from last year? It pairs rather nicely with this one. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/v-deo.html Looking forward to having you in the online school!! Thanks! Tom
Yes, Scott - it’s the same swing with every club in your bag.... (except the putter, perhaps 😆) Just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. By the way, you may wish to have a look at the Impact Drill lesson video from last year as it pairs quite nicely with this one: ua-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/v-deo.html Cheers! Tom
Great video. Reminds me of Hogan’s tips in his book, despite his perhaps non perfect adherence to it. How would you apply this to your driver? Seems more difficult to keep the club face square back and square through.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Bryan! This is not a square-to-square type of thing. What I'm teaching here is that there is no need for any active or contrived manipulation of the club with the hands and arms. And yes - the same applies to the driver as well. Perhaps the bird's eye perspective offered in this channel video might add some clarity: ua-cam.com/video/WxDD63quyk8/v-deo.html By the way, if you'd really like to own this swing through your entire bag please consider enrolling in the SagutoGolf online school as it is one of the best golf instruction values out there. For just $10 US/month or $99 US/year you'll have unlimited access to a comprehensive members-only learning system for the full swing and much more. The school's intuitive course curriculum greatly simplifies the entire process through succinct, step-by-step videos, and I'm regularly adding new content. I"ve been thinking about the following view of impact, "RELEASE IS IMPACT". It's what you're talking about I think i.e. think about what Release feels like and impact just happens. So release is where you are out in front of the ball, a little to the right of the target line, and where your arms have straightened out in front of you. Do you think focusing on Release is the way to go?????
Hi Rick, Whenever possible I try to offer different "feels' to help golfers of all different shapes, sizes, tendencies, and psyches achieve a particular desired swing motion or position. However, it's really up to the individual to figure it out for himself/herself in terms of what works best for them, including building in their own unique feels. This is an important part of the process of taking ownership of your swing. Your described release/impact feel does not seem contrary to this instruction, so if that works well for you in terms of producing crispy contact and a desirable ball flight then by all means do it! By the way, you may wish to have a look at the Impact Drill lesson video from last year as it pairs quite nicely with this one: ua-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/v-deo.html Keep up the great work! Tom
@@SagutoGolf Thank you for your response. I guess I'm always looking for "the secret" of golf, and had hoped this had been it...but I accept what you're saying and I appreciate your comments. Rick
Hi Tom, we need a complete education on hybrids. we know you can do it. Because you are the best. more and more people are using hybrids. Thanks in advance. Capt. Bob, Palmer, Alaska
Have a look at the swing of Mike Bennett, co-founder of the Stack and Tilt swing: ua-cam.com/video/WmErokCIlGQ/v-deo.html It may help you to see how the proper finish looks in this swing. By the way, you may wish to have a look at the Impact Drill lesson video from last year as it pairs quite nicely with this one: ua-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/v-deo.html Finally, it is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a sequential learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards learning and owning this swing. For just $10 US/month or $99 US/year you'll have unlimited access to a comprehensive members-only system for the full swing, the short game, and much more. The school's intuitive course layout greatly simplifies the entire process through succinct, step-by-step videos, and I'm regularly adding new content. SagutoGolf Thanks very much Tom. I purchased one online course from Adam Bazalgette. It was not that fruitful for me. There is no substitute for one on one instruction with real time feedback. Yet, every once in a while something clicks from watching a video and I can incorporate the improvement slowly.
Thanks - I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating well with you!! I have phased out in-person instruction so I can further dedicate my efforts in support of the online school. I will, however, continue the V1 Swing Video Analysis lessons as they are instrumental to the progress of my school's members, and these can be done for anyone from anywhere across the globe, school member or not. This enables me to put my eyes on your swing and offer some very specific observations and corrective action plans if applicable. The process involves downloading the free V1 app and then submitting two videos to me through the app - one down-the-line (captured from your stance line, not the target line) and the other face-on. You'll find more information about the V1 Analysis halfway down this page on the Saguto.Golf site: saguto.golf/p/lessons And here's a link if you are not already enrolled in the school and would like to know more about it: saguto.golf Cheers! Nice job figuring this out by yourself, @bobman Smith, especially with so much erroneous information out there specific to the "release"!! Keep up the great work! Tom
Bro. Been following you for quite sometime, Your videos seem to follow my progression or vice versa... I’ve always had decent contact, never struggled with a slice, distance and consistency has always been my downfall...hitting driver and choking on irons or hitting irons and choking on driver is another nemesis... turns out, my mechanics were sound, but my ambitions were to hi. Longest swing you ever seen on a short guy. Which leads to mental self destruct.. You sir opened my eyes to how simple it really can be to hit a golf ball. Entertaining demonstrations, experienced explanations inspired me to make my swing feel so simple and produce so much more,, I literally felt like I was undercutting the game... once a person puts it together, confidence lets you relax . Which leads to score cards you want to take home rather than rip in half or hide. NOW WE ARE HAVING FUN!!! Thank you, for doing what you do.
Awesome work, @Basil Smith!! You have discovered the "cheat" for how those scrawny guys on TV - and the naturally smaller-statured women on the LPGA - are able to absolutely bomb the ball while looking as though they are not really exerting themselves!! Thanks so much for sharing your success through my instruction, keep up the great work, and yes indeed - HAVE FUN OUT THERE!!! TS
Spot on good stuff Tom. Strong enough grip prevents forearm rollover. That is unless you love snaphooks. Hogan had a weak grip and he also hit millions of balls. Thanks for sharing

@SagutoGolf I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to me. I watched the video and understand hit it with your right hand with the wrath of God. I am a subscriber and part of the team. I'm just wondering with the right hand is it the right thumb that puts the pressure on the top of the club to send it or the index fingers? When i hit it the only way I feel strong is when the iron club face is open. Thanks
This is truth! If you can learn the feels of keeping lag tension through impact, your ball striking will improve dramatically. We’ve been taught the wrong way forever. Teaching the swing should start with the correct impact feel and then work back through the backswing to create a move that allows you to consistently replicate that feel.

@@SagutoGolf Thanks for replying Tom. I saved the video you mentioned last summer. He is correct, according to my husband who has studied all the swings back to Walter Hagen. He says that since Bobby Jones (the 1920s), the greats have held their wrists off through the ball, either purposely or that's what they naturally do. As long as Hogan rolled his wrists into the ball, he not only often hooked it out of play; he could not win. It was after he started holding his wrists off through impact that he became the great ball striker that he is known for being. Good lesson! Every player should pay attention to it, serious attention! Thank you, Tom. Definitely one of the best lessons on the net.
Thank you, Lilly!! I truly appreciate your and your husband's kind words and the historically factual endorsement of the primary message of this video. @@SagutoGolf Thank you for the response. We truly appreciate what you're doing and have sent numerous people to your videos. My husband taught for years, but he had to make us enough money to buy a new car and a color TV every decade or so. Ha! So, he moved into finance, while still playing the occasional money match. He teaches friends sometimes, because he loves teaching golf. Just FYI, he taught what he believed was the most efficient swing, which was what he called "A Square to Square Rhythmic Swing." He taught me that method when we met, and I made the golf team the last two years. He used to say, If you start from position A square to the ball in every respect, remain so through the backswing and down and through the ball, you have far less room for error, and can return to position A easier and most efficiently. And that is the most efficient swing in his view. It was simple for me, and I still play the same. The rhythm comes in by his belief that the golf swing is music and math (actually arithmetic) in swing form. And he taught rhythmic swings by people's golf personalities: Slow and deliberate (Nicklaus): 1 to the top, 2 on the very soft hands and slight pause, 3 through the strike zone. Faster and less deliberate (Trevino): 1 and 2. Thank you again. Enjoy your videos and teaching very much! Yours, Lilly

A legendary ball striker with a very unique style, Christian, and he positively mastered the three real fundamentals of an effective golf swing: 1. Hit the ground in the same spot every time (consistent crispy contact) 2. Have enough length to play the golf course well (power) 3. Be able to have a predictable curve (accuracy). TS
Thanks Dennis. The illusion of "rolling" is really just the lead and trail forearms naturally exchanging positions from pre-impact to post-impact. There is nothing contrived or active to this motion. Cheers! Tom

This is good & your timing is perfect. I was hitting irons like you Tom but I was developing a block with the driver about 40% of the time and a hook 25% of the time trying to overcompensate the grip to avoid the block. I booked a lesson, driver only and was taught exactly this - keep it square but to release. I hit 75% today!

Excellent tip. This works great for me as long as I am still hitting (slightly) down on the ball with the shaft staying on the same plane as it was at impact. 1. S&T set up with arms glued to body - maintained through out. 2. Chest DOWN throughout (cover the ball). 3. Swing up & DOWN along on the set up plane into the back of the ball (w/ Quiet hands - sorta like a hammer) 4. Wrath of God. 5. Sink the putt That’s my game plan. MH - Saguto Golf member

Your talking about hitting the ball with a shut face at the top. ie, you don't allow your wrists to roll. I agree it can be an easier way to hit the ball from the point of view of ease of squaring the face at impact but it does restrict your backswing. There is only so much you can swing back, basically 3 quarters, when you swing without allowing wrist rotation. Beyond that, you have to bend your left arm. Although it might be fine with a short to mid-iron, with driver or wood that will restrict your distance. It's only natural for your wrists to want to rotate.
The arms will rotate naturally and sufficiently if the proper connections are maintained and correct motions are executed. Any active manipulations above and beyond this are ill-advised and will only lead to inconsistency. This swing produces tremendous power and distance throughout the entire bag. The results are proven and undeniable. You just need to learn it correctly and then you'll understand... Cheers, Tom

I tend to play it a couple of balls inside my front heel, Rick, but I've been working on some stuff lately and it may have crept a little too far forward in the process. Thanks for pointing that out! In general you have some leeway with ball position. I like the simplicity of keeping it consistent relative to the inside of the lead heel and adjusting the stance width depending on the length of the club. Alternatively, the Stack & Tilt book prescribes a stock ball position that is in the middle of the stance for short irons, two balls inside the lead heel for middle irons, and incrementally more forward for the longer clubs - the farthest forward being even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver (again, with the stance width increasing as we move from shorter to longer clubs). Cheers! Tom
I've been working on this drill and during the release the club is coming up and bending my left wrist back and honestly is starting to hurt and feel sore., what am I doing wrong your left wrist is pretty flat at release and isn't bending up?

I have to say guilt played a part in my decision to join Tom’s school. However I am now glad my conscience ruled because his school is awesome.

Well done!!
As for your issue, here's a wrist hinge video that may help: ua-cam.com/video/ynLkzwK_SBg/v-deo.html
Beyond that, I would suggest the online school ( saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga ) or a V1 swing video analysis ( app.v1sports.com/Saguto-Golf ) if you're still having trouble resolving this.

The best part about this drill is that it forces you to turn your hips more. Its impossible to do with stalled hips.
Saguto Golf school member here. I went out and played yesterday. Hit the ball a lot better than before. I was always either topping the ball or hitting the ground early. Just need to work on accuracy and distance. Thanks Tom!
Hi John,
I'm glad to learn of your improvement since joining the online school!
Thanks again And I will let you know how things progress."_
Thanks very much for your support and keep up the great work!!

Saguto has completely changed the one aspect of my game I struggled with for so long. This has changed my game. I was a scooper instead of a flipper, but I got my hands in the situation. Very active. Now, the clubface feels so controlled.

Here's a good impact lesson if you want to double down on de-flippifying your swing: ua-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/v-deo.html

Absolutely taking this to the range this week, I've picked up a huge hook and it's deflating my game. Knew exactly what I was doing but couldn't work out how to fix it. Love your videos, thank you!

So I took it to the range last night, I had a mare! The odd pure crispy kfc we want, the rest not good. Mind overload. I know I can do it, I've been hitting low 90's recently so it's a mind over matter thing. A dozen good shots I need to build the confidence back.

Glad you cleared up that statement of Mr. Hogan’s, who said that he wished he had thee hands. His was mostly a body swing, with most of his power being generated by the legs and hips, not the hands. Thanks again for clearing this up.

You may appreciate the impact drill in this previous episode as it pairs quite nicely: ua-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/v-deo.html

Tom
Hi,
Great stuff as usual.
If looking head on we say that the head is at 12 o'clock & the ball is at 6 o'clock,
we can look at the arms position after release at 3 o'clock.
The right arm at 3 o'clock when looking at tour players is straight.
It can easily be thought that to get the right arm straight at 3 o'clock we need to
concentrate on straightening the right arm. However, if the left arm is straight
at 3 o'clock, then the right arm has to be as well. So concentrate on the left arm
through impact without rolling the right wrist into the shot.
I hope this makes sense, if not I blame the great beer called Duvel which I
have enjoyed today,
Cheers, Mark B.
That's a very nice assessment, Mark, even if it is the Duvel speaking!!....😂
Cheers!

@mptemplin,
You know I'm not a fan of trying to contrive, manipulate, or time something in the swing.

A modern swing, as opposed to a traditional swing.
Fantastic tip! Keeping the club face square all the way through the swing!
Hi Paul,
While you do have some leeway, in general once my students and members show some level of proficiency with the swing I suggest that they migrate to a stock ball position that is in the middle of the stance for short irons, two balls inside the lead heel for middle irons, and creeping more forward for the longer clubs - the farthest forward being even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver (with the stance width increasing as we move from shorter to longer clubs).

1) Regardless of a member's skill level, this swing necessitates a complete reboot for someone transitioning from a shift & lift swing (which is typically the case), and therefore it is imperative that one take sufficient time to ensure that the fundamental components are mastered.
You'll find more information about the V1 Analysis halfway down this page on the Saguto.Golf site: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolf
4) Finally, please migrate over to the SagutoGolf Community Forum - which is included in your online school enrollment - and begin engaging with your fellow members.
Here are a few of my channel episodes that may help to clarify:

There is no active rotation, and any attempt to add some would be ill-conceived unless one has the time to hit a thousand balls a day every day!
so important to tell the nuance between 'facts' and 'processed facts'. thx, our dear samurai master. :)
Cheers,

Great tip! I was taught to turn over the hands. No wonder I snap hook. Same for driver?
Yes, Scott - it’s the same swing with every club in your bag.... (except the putter, perhaps 😆) Just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods.

Hi Rick,
Whenever possible I try to offer different "feels' to help golfers of all different shapes, sizes, tendencies, and psyches achieve a particular desired swing motion or position.
By the way, you may wish to have a look at the Impact Drill lesson video from last year as it pairs quite nicely with this one: ua-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/v-deo.html

Finally, it is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a sequential learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards learning and owning this swing.
Damn, your vids are great..tips are easy to repeat..thank you.. do you give private lessons wherever you're from?

@@SagutoGolf awesome, thanks Tom! 😁👍🏻

What do you think of Moe Norman's swing ?
A legendary ball striker with a very unique style, Christian, and he positively mastered the three real fundamentals of an effective golf swing: 1. Hit the ground in the same spot every time (consistent crispy contact) 2. Have enough length to play the golf course well (power) 3. Be able to have a predictable curve (accuracy).
TS
I couldn't agree more. The ball has already been launched. Rolling the wrist only helps with a more comfortable follow through of your rotation.
Thanks Dennis.
The illusion of "rolling" is really just the lead and trail forearms naturally exchanging positions from pre-impact to post-impact. There is nothing contrived or active to this motion.

I heard forearm rotation adds more speed, is this type release better for accuracy rather than more distance?
With regard to this erroneous notion that we need to affect some type of active hand-rolling “release", given the inability of most folks to spend sufficient time at the range to lock in the required exactness of such an action this misguided thought has led countless golfers astray. It's not something that even the vast majority of pros are trying to consciously manufacture during the split second that the clubhead is traveling a distance of approximately 6' from parallel to parallel at speeds in excess of 100 mph. The forearms will naturally "trade places" from pre- to post-impact, but this should not be construed as a contrived move (although many a casual observer has gone down that rabbit hole). There really ought not be any active manipulation of the hands through the zone and attempts to precisely time any such rolling or flipping - *_which does nothing for swing speed_* - have relegated many an amateur to the vast abyss of inconsistency and frustration.
While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews

Does that work with the driver too??
Excellent tip. This works great for me as long as I am still hitting (slightly) down on the ball with the shaft staying on the same plane as it was at impact.
1. S&T set up with arms glued to body - maintained through out.
2. Chest DOWN throughout (cover the ball).
3. Swing up & DOWN along on the set up plane into the back of the ball (w/ Quiet hands - sorta like a hammer)
4. Wrath of God.
5. Sink the putt
That’s my game plan.

Spoken like someone who has embraced the process and taken ownership of his swing, Monty!!
Well-stated!!!
Stay crispy my friend,
Tom
I feel like I have to hold my left wrist a bit stiff to accomplish this. Is that normal?
Have you watched this impact lesson?: ua-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/v-deo.html
You're asking very specific questions, Wallace. Please work through my FREE mini-course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/
After that, the online school will provide the comprehensive, structured, step-by-step learning platform that you seek.

Cheers,
Tom
This was extremely helpful
I'm glad to know that this lesson resonated well with you, Jay. Thanks for sharing!!
Tom
Nice. Love the guy (red shirt) in the background looking at the video at 5:40. Priceless!
LOL - We're still hunting him down for the lesson fee!!.... 😂
Best instructor online!
You are far too kind, Mark!! (But I do very much appreciate it!!)
Tom
Hi Tom, The same way with the driver and woods? Thanks
Yes - it’s the same swing with every club in your bag.... (except the putter, perhaps 😆) Just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods.
Cheers!
Tom

That's some significant improvement, Les!

This was a huge game-changer for me a couple years ago!!
👍
Thanks Bob! I'm glad to know that this video from my channel's archives continues to pay dividends for you!!

No wonder I was inconsistent with my shots. I was hooking alot due to turning over my hands . Great advice!
I'm glad this episode helped you figure that out!! You may also benefit from watching this anti-flipping impact lesson and drill from last year as it pairs well with this most recent video: ua-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/v-deo.html

Tom
Thanks Tom
Right on! Thanks for making it simple! 😀
My pleasure, Terrif!!
It seems like the ball is really forward in your stance. Is that pretty normal for stack and tilt?
Cheers!
Tom
Tnx Tom!!
Always a pleasure, Jincy!
I've been working on this drill and during the release the club is coming up and bending my left wrist back and honestly is starting to hurt and feel sore., what am I doing wrong your left wrist is pretty flat at release and isn't bending up?
The drill in this anti-flipping impact video may help you: ua-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/v-deo.html
You're a good egg, Tom. Great tutorial. Spicy & Extra Crispy!
