Brilliant video! As a coach in South Africa, I’ve heard all kinds of opinions about Christo’s swing, so it was fantastic to get clarity from Greg. I personally think Greg is one of the smartest people I’ve ever met. Great video, excellent content, and I can’t wait to see more!

As an amateur golfer, if I could chat with anyone in the golf world for 15 minutes it would be Dr Rose.
After years of just not being able to understand why I was stuck Early extending, I saw your video with Iona. Specifically, the boat and the tube analogy made something in my head click. Please keep up the good work. This content is so incredibly helpful.

Thanks for mentioning EE & Iona's vid. I followed that trail & spent the whole night watching. The last 20 mins is gold. I early extend and like Iona says... it's hideous LOL. And I noticed that I've always struck the ball with my irons off-center on the toe side. Did you experience that too? Is that a by-product of early extension?

Subscribed! Wow, what a great video! Really fascinating dialogue between Greg and Christo, then the collection ... and interpretation of data. Had a chance to see Christo up close over 18 holes this past spring at the Georgia Cup. Man is he impressive. He has speed, power, and finesse. The sound of him compressing the ball is otherworldly. He says in the video "I hit it hard ... hit it long, and I would say my short game is pretty good". He is being very humble on these accounts. All these skills were on full display at the Georgia Cup that day. If he manages to fine tune his mid and short irons, watch out. I can't wait to see how he progresses. If he can stay healthy, and improves even just a little bit, watch out.

  • @OldProGolf
    @OldProGolf День тому

Fascinating video. Old PGA pro, long retired, putting in my "2 pennorth".
I agree pretty much all you say, but there is more to it. Christo's short irons are still way too short for him. For his swing to look classic, he would need longer clubs, lighter heads, more upright and stand closer. This would put less strain on his back, knees and hips.
This is probably too much of a change for him but I would recommend some movement towards that.
Without such major change, I suggest that he makes small changes to his iron release. His driver releases well ("money") because of the speed and momentum - he lets it go. With short irons he is trying to hold on to the club, guiding it rather than releasing it. Rory McIlroy does the same thing with similar results, a two way miss, toe shots finishing short right, as the club head is pulled away from the ball, weak (not decisive) shots going long left. This "holding the face square" is a popular idea, spread by pros who do not understand physics and do not do it themselves.
The reason that he is dipping lower on the follow through with short irons is that, in an effort to "hold the face", he is following through too low, upsetting his swing plane. When he did as you suggested, staying up after impact, his follow through and release became easier, on the chip shots actually club pointing right of the target, not slightly left.
So, same thing that you were saying but from a different perspective.
I would also suggest slightly less grip tension on the follow through.
I doubt anyone will read this but it keeps my mind active now that I can no longer play/teach.

Imo it's also an equipment issue based on his height/frame. I wonder if a shaft company has ever r&d'd a very long Graphite iron shaft that was counter balanced to keep swing weight from getting out of control what would his swing look like? I mean, imagine if any one us took our ~35" wedge and chopped off 5" in length and how'd that work out? Driver works because shaft is much longer. He physically doesn't have to go as far down.

Thanks for the content. One question: I understand your teaching arms go up when body goes down and arms go up and seen where Jamie S long driver did exercises for this with you. When I feel myself squat it’s when I am dropping arms into the slot (is that the wrong sequence?) and it’s not until the upper part of my lead arm pins or presses against my lead pec as I bring my lead shoulder up and back ( pulling handle up for club head speed) creating the whip that my arms pull up and push back with the lead foot to extend my front leg. If I squat while my arms are still going back in back swing then the trail leg is not extending for power as many players do. If I squat after I shift to lead side which causes my arms to drop in the slot I am not simulating arms dropping while jumping that you teach. When should I squat?

He’s got a lot of lead wrist extension into the downswing.
He even shows this during his preferred position in the downswing, the toe is rotating down to the ground more which is a more stable position.
He’s losing stuff right because the Face is opening on the way down. Tough to sync it all up from there.

Doesn't need all these tech and tools to know why he hits it long.
The kid's is damn tall and athletic, and his height alone creates insane amount of leverage.
I bet you that guys with an average height swing same way won't get anywhere close to his speed because they can't create the same amount of leverage.
Sometimes TPI's gotten so wrapped up loaded in tech and medical terms and complicated that they themselves surprised and impressed at something so simple.

He's almost using reverse vertical force with such a big leg collapse. Which means he's relying on his long arms for leverage and speed. My coach would have him sorted in a short amount of time. His 'super power' with the driver was impressive however he still definitely dropped too much without powering back upwards vertically. Also his concept to rotate left all the time (horizontally) rather than pushing up vertically needs to change. I thought these guys would have identified and pushed that a little more. Be interesting to see him in a year.

Drinking game. Words are super power.
    Christo can play Colossus.
That Sam Snead bow legged squat move allows Christo to utilize ground forces. A lot of us amateurs mostly utilize rotational force and don't understand why we can't hit the ball any further. Ground force is the missing key for most.
Flipping at impact is another distance killer. Working on these 2 issues has increased my distance substantially.
I'm a golf nerd and go to drills are the only way most of us will get better. Unfortunately, most amateurs won't do this.

  • @darrenfitzpatrick5331

Obviously you aren’t going to drastically change his move, especially with driver, but it’s hard to not look at his flexed lead leg through impact and not think he’s not maximizing distance/power and would possibly sort out his iron swing issues. Any comment?

    One length irons?

  • @cpv3golf
    @cpv3golf 17 днів тому +5

Just way to much lower body 125 yards and in. We know lower body generates power. (Loading and Exploding)(Jason Glass) As we move closer and closer to the green I feel we have to start eliminating or controlling the amount of power (loading) thru impact. I've learned with my students the best way to control the power is to move the feet closer together and controlling how much the trail foot heel comes up off the ground. Just like the fundamental of a green side or fairway bunker of controlling the trail foot for more stability thru impact. At some point the closer you are to the green then shortening the backswing along with closer feet together and controlling the right heel action is extremely important What I do for my students is on the driving range for 125 yard and shorter shots I will video the swing from down line and then calculate how much the distance the feet are apart and the angle between the ground and the right trail heel off the ground. For most of my students 80 yards should be no more than 1 degree, 100 yards 9 degrees and 125 yards 14 degrees. Just want to say how much I greatly appreciate all the info you put out there. You are the best.

I have always been great with my driver and it wasn't until I just focused on my shoulder rotation on my irons that they finally clicked.

What if he used close to standard length irons. He has to use a 46" driver on tour. He is use to going down and getting the ball. Longer length irons are making him feel stuck.

I change my mind. Hover your irons ball height

I think that his sagging right side approaching impact and after, much worse with the irons, could be hard on his back in the coming years. Maybe part of the reason is that he is so tall, but also could be that he stands too far away from the ball.

Good video but it is kinda funny that the issue is the most obvious thing that you notice the first time you see him swing

The irons are too short for his body hence the disconnect..simple..🤗

He stands too far away from the ball, which is going to make the irons even shorter.

This is a no brainer is it not . With that speed you lose the finesse that makes you a great short game player . Bryson has said it and now Kyle Berkshire . Its very hard to have both . Whats wrong with longer clubs for the guy ?

I can identify this is my game as what i call "the scoop" I see a lot of women amateur players also buckling their legs and trying to scoop the ball into the air. I did not like the way it looked on his driver swing either but I guess I'm wrong on that one.

Why is his longest iron not the same size as his driver? Dude looks like he's bowling lol.

In the first minute of seeing his swing I could see his legs collapsing; clearly the low end of the bag is too short for him. Longer shafts with lofts adjusted for his yardages = problem solved, don't need $50K in test equipment.

His golf swing is extremely similar to Moe Normans... All he needs to do is get Moe's consistency and repeatability. You should take away some of Moe's swing characteristics and apply it to Christo to see if it helps.

strongest grip ive ever seen, no mention of hands and club plane, clubface awareness. needs to train his hands and train contact, could use a coach like mike bender or hank haney

Lots of coaches are very hesitant to change the grip in an elite player. High handicappers, change away. But you have to be very careful with a pro

I think, he should practice one-handed shots. The actual swing doesn´t look like it can be made with one hand only.

That upper body strength makes sense, his shirt looks like its hanging off a coat hanger.
