As a senior in High School I saw this movie at the premier showing in downtown Denver...late October 1981. Wow...that long ago. I saw the premier advertisement in the newpaper, went out and bought the soundtrack on LP (still have it) and stored the newspaper advert in that LP sleeve. It IS a good movie and does stand up on its own. Of course I have a DVD of it along with as many of the RHPS boxed sets I could get (15th anniv, 25th? anniv) Love both. I was just in Adelaide Australia where my daughter's in-laws had a late wedding party for her and the lady DJ played Time Warp. I introduced my daughter to RHPS back in the late 90s...so cool to hear that song being played so far from home.
Make no mistake about it, Shock Treatment IS a cult film, not a genre-defying classic like it's predecessor, but it's original obscurity has actually benefited it's longevity. Slowly over time it's gained a fandom of its own and deserves to be part of the "Denton" saga and not ignored. After all, aren't the lyrics "Science fiction DOUBLE feature"???

This film was ahead of its time. Very much a cult. I think a few things put people off it - using a different cast, bad release schedule and people expected a story more like RHPS. I think a lot of the songs aren’t memorable enough, except for this and “Bitchin’ in the Kitchen”. Never the less, the more I see of it, the more I like this film.
I love when I talk about this and phantom of the paradise at school and everybody is like "what the fuck is rocky horror?" And then I know there's no hope so I sing this
Yknow my mums friend was a great trumpet player and applied to be on the actor for berts stage play thingy around 20 years ago and he said she was too fat which just goes to show he’s still very committed to the role

There are a lot of films in the history of cinema that just miss the hit status and later on become cult classics . Many got scorned by the critics and the public ignored them but they got a second life because they were good films . Neighbors , Waterworld , At Long Last Love , and Shock Treatment are such films . Now as I have stated on other threads . I don’t consider Rocky Horror a cult classic . Even though it made its way through the Midnight Movie circuit back then , it actually was a mainstream hit. It was a classic not a cult classic. Shock Treatment is the cult classic
Although I've only seen this film once like two or three years ago honestly when comparing this to its predecessor Rocky Horror Picture Show, this honestly I was kinda glad I didn't know about it but more in the sense of not being over rated like it's predecessor. Yes Rocky horror is a good musical however it's just a tad over rated. Whereas this on the other hand is not over rated but honestly one of those obscure films you can't help but enjoy and appreciate some of the creative camera angles.
I really love this movie. But I think they should have scrapped the brad and Janet names and instead been Ralph and Betty hapschat (sp?) from the beginning of RHPS.
I haven't actually seen this movie yet (not for lack of trying, I just can't find a copy) but I have to say I actually really like this song. I actually like this more than the majority of the Rocky horror songs, and that's saying something.
it's here on UA-cam, heck I think it even came on up in the links, it's free and it's a good copy, just watched it two nights ago. It's may not be as exciting as Rocky but it's definitely worth watching, the songs are great. 😃
wish they put this version on the soundtrack too. the richard o'brien solo version is good too though, sounds like it could have even been a pop single.
I love Rocky Horror, it's my favorite movie! After I watched Shock Treatment a few times I got what it was about and how they were dropping references and I love this movie now too! I love Columbia, but I think I really love Nurse!
VN Reader Despite the schlock, there is indeed some smarts in there. Combining mental health treatment with the bloated capitalistic TV-shopping/variety hour is just something so wildly out there.
I had to watch it 2 times before I actually liked it. I like RHPS better because it helped me out through some times. But I love this movie now!! Nell is so good in this movie, I mean they all are but I love Nell so much!
VN Reader I personally found Rocky Horror too weird for my tastes. Shock Treatment is more abstract than weird, and honestly, I too prefer it. Real shame that it was doomed to be dead on arrival.
People have to remember that when this movie was made The American Screen Actors Guild. was on strike making it impossible for Barry, Susan, to be in the "sudo-sequel". ALSO Frankenfurter (along with his creature) died on "that fateful night". He should have listened to me and gone Behind the curtain and not up it.
I get why they couldn’t use Barry and Susan - but given the fact that they used Jessica and Cliff, who are both US actors, how did they get around the strike?
I have often thought there was a sort of musical and (in some respects) sartorial synchronization between Richard O'Brian and Thomas Dolby. I wish they had go together to make a musical...about...SCIENCE!!!!
Astral Eternity This movie needs to be talked about. Almost nobody knows it exists even to this day. I think Shock Treatment is well past due for some posthumous success.
The more I see of shock treatment, the more I kinda wish it wasn't ignored in the way it was... It stands up on its own merits
It is its own thing, can you even call it a sequel. Its more like a spin off

The third verse:
If you're one to sequestor a hint of desire
You're a bloke who can turn down a whore
With the birds and the bees, we fly higher and higher
I've known lovers under covers in Nador
But if a girl steals your heart when you're not into hooking
She will take you for all that you've got
She's a thorn in your side - at least there's her cooking
It'll shake you the way she moves in as likely as not
You need a bit of ooooh...Shock Treatment
Gets you jumping like a real live wire
Need a bit of ooooh...Shock Treatment
So look out Mister, don't you blow your last resistor
For a vista that'll mystify ya
You're riddled with stories, you're riddled with fables
You can't think for yourself any more
You're a broken down chap who's clearly unstable
Physician, my condition please restore

This film was ahead of its time. Very much a cult. I think a few things put people off it - using a different cast, bad release schedule and people expected a story more like RHPS. I think a lot of the songs aren’t memorable enough, except for this and “Bitchin’ in the Kitchen”.
Never the less, the more I see of it, the more I like this film.
This is such a fun song.
Best song from a movie full of great ones.
Just fantastic...
Underrated film.
I love when I talk about this and phantom of the paradise at school and everybody is like "what the fuck is rocky horror?" And then I know there's no hope so I sing this
Ive watched this 100's of times but just noticed 2:18. Richard nearly stumbles over as the door hits his foot.
This movie is so underrated.
Bert is criminally underrated and it's not ok
Yknow my mums friend was a great trumpet player and applied to be on the actor for berts stage play thingy around 20 years ago and he said she was too fat which just goes to show he’s still very committed to the role
I never knew Rik mayall was in shock treatment!! He was brilliant.
I can't stop singing this.
Say what you will, but this movie is fun and the music is brilliant. Richard O’Brien is a genius.
You know why this is the best song in the movie it’s because the big three from Rocky each get a verse.
The only reason i know Jessica Harper is this and Suspiria. All three are excellent.
I can listen to the song all day long and all night long
“Hi brad I’ve just come to tell you how fabulous I am” me @ my ex
timeless.....kompliment to mr o brien...... in the 80th we are not knowing, what will come. now we have the shit here. txs to the big philisoph and psychologie mr o brien....txs for all times!
Such a great musical!
This song is going to be going off in my head all day now I just know it.
I really love this movie. But I think they should have scrapped the brad and Janet names and instead been Ralph and Betty hapschat (sp?) from the beginning of RHPS.
When Little Nell climbs up on the cage I start sweating... it happens every time! :)
Ruby Kelly i just happened to find it at big lots for $5 one day
Completely underrated! Love shock treatment just as much as rocky horror!
ok this song, but the joker's singing and to go along with every title drop he flips on an electric chair
Little nell climbing on that cage blows my mind!
How the hell did she manage to put a trill on "alliance" at 1:14? That is amazingly impressive.
I still LOVE THE SOUNDTRACK!!!!
My little sister's reaction to this song:
"Ooooohh! *points to Patricia* She actually has nice voice!"
Didn't know should I laugh or...
wish they put this version on the soundtrack too. the richard o'brien solo version is good too though, sounds like it could have even been a pop single.
It was on the cd I had.
Stunning film and soundtrack
I can listen to this song all day long and all night
"Macabre, isnt it?"
I love Rocky Horror, it's my favorite movie! After I watched Shock Treatment a few times I got what it was about and how they were dropping references and I love this movie now too! I love Columbia, but I think I really love Nurse!
Sometimes I feel I am the only person who prefers this movie to Rocky Horror. It's a more intelligent movie with a better plot.
It was way ahead of it's time.
I love this movie, a lot more than RHPS, but feel like it has missed potential. It was almost something truly special.
Thank you for explaining about Barry and Susan. I seriously wondered why they weren't there :D
Robert Dalton Dr. Frank N. Furter
I get why they couldn’t use Barry and Susan - but given the fact that they used Jessica and Cliff, who are both US actors, how did they get around the strike?
This song getting me vibin.
what a song!
Rik Mayall 💔
I miss you.
Richard O'Brien has the best fucking voice I ever heard.
SHE BLINDED ME WITH SCIENCE!
I have often thought there was a sort of musical and (in some respects) sartorial synchronization between Richard O'Brian and Thomas Dolby. I wish they had go together to make a musical...about...SCIENCE!!!!
Janet: Hi Brad I just came to tell you how FABULOUS I am
Literally me to everyone
I really want to go see this in a theater like Rocky Horror. But it's hard to come by. I wish he would have made the third movie. *sigh*
Love this song Shock Treatment.
Hot take: this song is better than any song in rocky horror
Anyone notice that Ricky’s camera flashes don’t add up?
2 everyone who hates me for liking this: "Bite me, it's catchy! It's like the 80's Let it go"
Astral Eternity I can dig it!
Astral Eternity This movie needs to be talked about. Almost nobody knows it exists even to this day.
I think Shock Treatment is well past due for some posthumous success.
people who have seen Rocky over 100 times will not see this movie once. It is tragic, I love the film, the music, the characters, everything.
+Rob Mitchell I agree 100%. This is not as good as Rocky Horror... but c'mon. What is? But this is still a great deal of fun.
Everyone has their own movies regardless of what people say. Your opinion is the superior opinion.
