This is the Marmite of movies sequels/equals, you either love it or you hate it. I am firmly in the former camp, it's a quirky masterpiece that will sadly be forever in the shadow of Rocky.
I saw this movie at midnight in a theater in Denton, TX. Richard O'Brien was there (it was a special preview showing). I thought it was a damn good movie, but I knew it would flop, because everyone was expecting a "new Rocky Horror", which it definitely was not. It was too weird for mainstream audiences, and not what the Rocky crowd wanted, so it pretty much had no audience. I remember a bunch of our Rocky group started wearing Shock Treatment costumes and I knew that would never work. Oh well. It's still a gem of a film.
you know when someone told me it was a commercial flop I was BEYOND surprised I absolutely LOVE this movie.... The songs too are just super catchy 🤷🏻♀️😂
From what I understand the original theatrical release of this movie was JUST on midnight screenings. In my view, that's what killed the film. I mean...how were non-RHPS fanatics supposed to know it was even out?
Really just... bad advertising, bad marketing, bad release times. They should not have marketed it as a rocky horror sequel. they should have just marketed it as a musical movie w/ satire.
Richard O'Brien has gone on record saying he thinks the songs are far better than RHPS and I couldn't agree more. I have the soundtrack album and regularly play it just for the songs. Never understood why it didn't get more reaction even after a botched theatrical release. The songs, satire and performances are outstanding. My favourite musical of all time.
I don't know how I feel about this movie. I've been a fan of Rocky Horror for almost 30 years and finally watched Shock Treatment today. While I'm glad I finally had a chance to watch it, I just couldn't get past the fact is missing a lot of what made Rocky Horror so magical.
I tried watching this the first time as a standalone movie and.that didn't work, so I tried watching this as a sequel and that hasn't worked, but I at least gave it a try. Some of the songs are good, but the overall movie just didn't reel me in.

I was just a few weeks shy of my 11th birthday when this movie came out. It was deep the era of radio station giveaways and I was caller number (Don't remember) and the local top 40 radio station 96FM was giving away 2 tickets to the Shock Treatment's opening day premiere. I went to a late night screening, with my Dad, and it made an indelible impression on me. I think Rocky Horror is great, although it would be 5 years later before I finally saw it, again with my Dad at a college student union midnight screening, but Shock Treatment ranks just a tiny bit higher thanks to my own nostalgia. Plus... Holy cow, could this movie and music hold a more prophetic mirror to todays society? Wow!
When you consider the background on this picture, it is amazing it was made and phenomenal from all that happened to get it made. Couple that with a first rate cast, great soundtrack (actually written for a different script and fit into this one), and the fact it was put together during a actors strike and moved to a different country at the last minute and it is beyond comprehension how good it is! Richard O’Brien truly forecast reality TV with this script and spoke to the state of the current political failures in America almost 40 years before they happened. It’s a great movie that never got the first run it deserved.
Every time I watch this movie, see rocky horror or read a script for them I'm impressed/shocked how all that came from one mind. Like you just have enough things in your head to write a billion scripts and make these movies and that's so cool
I was almost entirely through this movie before it dawned on me that I didn't actually hate it the way I, as a two and a half decades long Rocky Horror fan, was "supposed" to. This movie is an underrated gem with a fantastic soundtrack! I had to immediately rewatch it, and starting it a second time with a vastly different mindset, and a clue what was going on made all the difference! Love it!
@meherenowmaybe I've watched it several times since, and I think it's a fucking FANTASTIC movie, actually. I didn't DECIDE to like it, I just realised it was impossible for me to hold onto the dislike I had initially decided to have for it due to prejudice.
I LOVE this movie. Rocky Horror is an absolute legendary movie and I love it so much, but Shock Treatment is an obsession. The soundtrack is just SO bloody catchy and Jessica Harper is amazing.
This is such a great movie, so underrated. It’s a shame that it’s basically doomed to live in the shadow of Rocky Horror. Yes, Shock Treatment has a similar campy style and classic glam rock infused soundtrack, but otherwise it’s really its own thing. Also, while Rocky Horror mostly works as a satirical tribute to old sci-fi movies, Shock Treatment is much more effective at holding a mirror up to society, criticizing celebrity culture, consumerism and the corporatization of… well, just about everything. I like Rocky Horror, but I LOVE Shock Treatment. Maybe now that it’s proven somewhat prophetic, the movie will gain some much deserved popularity and critical reevaluation.
Right? It is so relevant and applicable even today, and I don't why Richard O'Brien is so disappointed in it. Things as small as them saying "tolerance for the ethnic races" when they sing about Denton and you see today how even movies preach about how they are tolerant and diverse, while back in the 1980's it wasn't that big of an issue; reality TV before it was a thing and the blind following of celebrities. Such an underrated, intelligent movie.
Saw this in the mid eighties after my baptism to RH Pic Show - and for all it's own qualities and distinct societal and cultural observations, myself and most my friends at that time adored this movie - and camp classic songs. A sadly hidden gem ... and underrated by the 'masses'.
I just watched Caitlyn's upload and absolutely had to watch the film again, so this upload was a joy to come across. Caitlyn's upload was the first to come up in a google search and I'm so grateful for that, but this was perfect as an immediate and higher quality rewatch x
That's where I first watched it too, so I wanted to atleast give back and give a slightly better version. I wish they would rerelease it on 4k or bluray
I've been a rocky horror fan for years. I've never seen this. From what I'm reading in the comments, it was a flop, so I guess it just didn't get seen much, or get much traction later, and that's a shame. I think to truly enjoy it you need to understand that it's it's own thing. It is amazing! I love it on so many levels! The satire on society, major influence of corporations and media driven by profits, no matter the harm to others. Boxing yourself in with group thinking, the power of going against the narrative with reasoning, that gets you labeled crazy, but in the end your own personal inner freedom frees you. Not to mention the phenomenal music, choreography, symbolism, and wardrobe! Love it!
The film was a flop mostly because they only released at midnight and thought it was rather better than a wide release. So yeah, you can blame the studio for this "genius" idea
I saw this movie when it first came out and remember being disappointed. Now I'm not sure why. Watching it again after all these years I'm seeing it from a fresh perspective. Much better than I remember it being. And Barry Humphries, RIP Dame Edna. ❤
How good is Jessica Harper's voice? So effortless. Glad to see her get another chance to showcase her amazing talent. Loved her in Phantom of The Paradise too (another cult classic for those that don't know about that one - definitely worth looking for. It's occasionally on Turner Classic Movies with a great background story from the TCM host).
Gene Siskel's casual dismissal of Jessica Harper as a bad vocalist on Sneak Previews has always been a gut punch. Love my boys, but she's a fabulous singer.
thank you so much we need more people like you to reupload 100% full movies or shows unedited its a rare thing. so thank you. I hope to see more. I subbed.
This movie reflects on a lot of familiar ego-narcissistic manipulations within society. It's usually the one who can see through the veil that gets overran by the majority of the narcissists, usually pinned as the insane.
Also Brad is put in conversion therapy. That lines up perfectly with what happened with Frank and Brad, clearly it exposed Brad to something new. So now he’s caged up and sedated until be can be “fixed” I just feel that the movie doesn’t do enough with him on this front, and it should’ve. He clearly doesn’t want to go, but once he’s there… the movie ignores him as a character
I think the ending is about the group realizing they need to live their life in their own terms. Not fueled by ego or what other people think, just have the life they want. As for the townspeople, you can’t cure stupid. Brad and Janet couldn’t save them, maybe Denton will learn their lesson, maybe not. Either way, they left, not letting this get in their ways.
Also imo cosmo and nation weren’t really that bad or “evil” they are actors they will do whatever gets them money. Cosmo is upset when Bert tells him Farley bought his show so he totally wasn’t really keen on Farley in the first place. In a way I think they both actually cared for Janet despite that they drugged her but can you blame them? All the fame was getting to her head and they needed some way to calm her down and quickly. Back in the day women were polite and submissive towards their partners. Even if she was sassy and confident during her performance she couldn’t act all egotistical and full of herself when she is with Farley.
I have been a HUGE fan of Rocky Horror since about 1980, and I remember when Shock Treatment came out........I actually saw it in the theater when it was released. The theater was packed with Rocky Horror fans, but we were all trying to somehow relate this new movie to the original RHPS, and no one was quite sure how to do that. Also, since Shock Treatment did not have Tim Curry, Barry Bostwick, or Susan Sarandon, I think that worked against the sequel. For true fans of the RHPS, Shock Treatment is definitely worth watching. I thank you for posting this in it's entirety, as every now and then I have wondered how I could watch it again.
@@shersher78yeah she seemed more full of herself. Even if Franks influence has changed her she always seemed to have that spark of innocence in her. This one seemed kinda berating
In My Humble MF-ing Opinion, this needs a Broadway revival. Do a three and a half hour Science Fiction Double Feature - on stage - Rocky Horror = Act One ... Shock Treatment = Act Two. People would be like: "Oh, how can the second act compare?" Screw you, it does. I'd put the Shock Treatment songs up against the Rocky Horror songs any day of the week. They are both awesome.
This was better than I'd heard it was. Richard O'Brien's right: the songs are good, even if the plot could be better. But, it's also very different than "Rocky Horror," and that may have thrown off the "Rocky" fans who expected a straightforward sequel.
I think it's because the music was always the music even during all the script and plot changes , and when you figure out which scripts were the most prominent you can figure which song were left from them like the song young blood matching up to the script where frankenfurter (or there queen I forget) needs the blood of virgins to stay alive and the line in the twins duet about losing your baby from the script where Janet is pregnant from frank and has it and it's all messed up. So the songs had much more development than any of the scripts had.
@@instinctivelychelsea2905 yeah I forgot Richard had 5 ideas for a sequel and only shock treatment was actually made It’s sad that the only reason Rocky Horror Shows His Heels (the one where Frank is brought back by blood and Janet is pregnant with his child) wasn’t made was because Tim Curry didn’t want to return for a sequel and didn’t think it was necessary. If you look at it Shock Treatment is basically if none of the events of Rocky Horror happened except Brad proposing to Janet. Don’t know how long they been together but never expected their marriage to not work out except if they went with the direct sequel and their shared trauma of Frank ended up ruining their marriage. Also very unexpected for Ralph and Betty to separate even if we only knew them for a minute in the first movie
True Story: I met Barry Bostwick in Raleigh. Great man even got his autograph from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Even performed as Eddie to honor Meat Loaf for the RHPS in Durham 2 years ago. Thanks Barry. By the way great to see you again in Raleigh last month.
thanks so much for uploading this! its been years since I saw it online. Yes, campy can be good, the songs often get stuck in my head, especially the night song.
I just found out that this exists today. It's like a cross between The Truman Show and the character Media from the show American Gods, but directed by David Lynch after going a bit too hard on the shrooms. I like it.
I loved Cosmo a lot haha. He played the crazy doctor type quite well. Since Riff Raff didn’t get much screen time glad Cosmo played a bigger part. Idk why I kinda saw it coming that there was gonna be incest between Richard and Patricia’s characters again 😭
I enjoyed this, but it doesn't work as a sequel to Rocky. As a stand alone film it is great fun and deserves to have been more successful. Well worth the watching
I feel like for it to work they could’ve mentioned the events of rocky horror and maybe that’s why Brad had to go to Dentonvale not because of his “failed marriage” and being “boring” It’s funny women were usually in insane asylums if they didn’t bring enough to the marriage but it’s Brad as he always was more feminine in Rocky Horror
Back in high school in the 90s, I had a good friend who was obsessed with RHPS, managed to get a VHS copy of this, and became even more obsessed with it. I miss that weirdo.
After all these years of enjoying this pic, I still love it. The music is incredible and the performances are fantastic. Truly improves with every viewing.
I’m actually loving this movie. I’ve heard of it but never watched it until now. It’s like Stanley Kubrick and the Cohen brothers made a musical and filmed it on the 3rd floor at MOMA. Is that Rik Mayall? We got a letter from the council !! To go a step further.... with O’Brien’s music, I love all the choruses of the rocky horror songs and I love all the verses in these songs. Especially, whatever song starts at 38:30 . That guitar part on the verse is sick!!
Just as this isn’t prophetic, THE WORLD WAS ALREADY THIS WAY, YOU WERE JUST TOO YOUNG TO REMEMBER IT! Idiocracy was based on a sci-if short story published in 1951! These stories aren’t “prophetic”, you just 2000 and LATE!
Serendipity - just found this by chance ie bored and scrolling through UA-cam randomly! Have never heard of this film depite having several copies of The Rocky Horror Picture Show on VHS and DVD, and have found I have this sitting in a box in a cupboard. I had planned on putting a few films on eBay in time for Halloween as I have numerous VHS tapes of original 80's video nasties, might come across some more cult classics?
Well. this was strange. It seemed kind of modern. I basically enjoyed it, but Rocky Horror has better music. I liked seeing some of the same actors again. Janet had a completely different personality from the other movie; and I understood why somebody else on this said it was like the two stories were running on parallel timelines.. as this didn't seem like it would be a sequel. Thanks for posting. I had no idea it existed.
The LOOK of Rocky Horror played a large part in the success. It's a beautiful movie. For this one, they went out of their way to make it painful to look at, the lighting, the basic production design, the colors. I get that it was done ironically, or as social commentary but ugly is ugly.
Yeah, camp cult classic or not, this movie is just not good, nor are any of the songs bangers.. Xanadu looks like a musical masterpiece compared to this turkey
I was one of the groupies who went to the midnight showing in Westwood, CA, when this first came out. It was funny because there were no "shout back" lines yet, so people started making stuff up. 45 years later, I can still recite the dialog and music. The song "Me of Me" is so prophetic, pre-dating the social media look at me, me me, we have today. Richard O'brien is a genius.
I didn't even know there was a "sequel" to "Rocky Horror" til just now when I watched it lol. It's funny cuz just the other day I was thinking a sequel/spinoff about Riff Raff and Magenta back in thier home planet could be really interesting
There's a script floating around for the other version of the sequel that never got made, and Riff and Magenta are in it... As is the son of Frank! It's wild, absolutely worth a read just to see what might have been.
It's creepy how prophetic this movie became like 10 years later we got the first season of the Real World, Survivor not long after. This was supposed to be a light parody of game show and television culture that somehow became our reality. To the point that someone who was well known for reality television later became president. You could easily see that becoming the case for Farley if the movie went on for another ten min.
Like horror films? See Jessica Harper in Suspiria 1977. But better yet, see Tilda Swinton in Suspiria 2018. You won't be disappointed. PS - Go Rocky Horror!!! (Rocky, Rocky ra ra ra!)
Just so tame. Feels like something made to be more palatable for a bigger audience. Tim Curry took RHPS over the top. This never got off the ground. I'm not saying I didn't like it, but I did keep hoping it would shock me or at least have a surprise or two. If I wanted to watch something for the whole family, I would have had a family.
Brilliant... Instead of the 'planned' audience all going home they stay the night & sleep in their seats as.... They 'd fall asleep in front of their Screens (TV or other) anyway!
Shock Treatment will ilive forever, and let's be honest, as the cult of RHPS became mainstream in a way it should never have - we are all glad there's another more holy magig movie from Richard O'Brien/ Jim Sharman and Richard Hartley. Time is sadly missed but there's another very cool new gang joining the regulars. Love Jessica, Barry, Ricky, ,Cliff and Ruby. And all the other great cameo's.

Love it!
I wonder if they're streaming this on Netflix, by now....?
The film was a flop mostly because they only released at midnight and thought it was rather better than a wide release. So yeah, you can blame the studio for this "genius" idea
This was such a Fun Ride. Thank You for Sharing. Unconventional Conventionalists Unite 💋🖤🎶
Hoopla!
I am surprised that they don’t show phantom of the Paradiseshown as midnight movie please let me know here
I only know her from Suspiria! She was great in that too! Both versions: the original in 1977 and the remake in like 2019ish.
Phantom of the Paradise is easily in my top 3 favorite movies. And Jessica Harper’s voice is amazing in it.
I subbed.
I've been looking for this movie in hd everywhere! thank you!
This movie reflects on a lot of familiar ego-narcissistic manipulations within society. It's usually the one who can see through the veil that gets overran by the majority of the narcissists, usually pinned as the insane.
AMEN!
And the effects of Reality TV on society. Heck, it's like Farley Flavors was elected President...
Spot on.
Also Brad is put in conversion therapy. That lines up perfectly with what happened with Frank and Brad, clearly it exposed Brad to something new. So now he’s caged up and sedated until be can be “fixed”
I just feel that the movie doesn’t do enough with him on this front, and it should’ve.
Just like the end of Rocky Horror!
This is and isn't what I was expecting by im vibing to it
I have been a HUGE fan of Rocky Horror since about 1980, and I remember when Shock Treatment came out........I actually saw it in the theater when it was released.
I really dislike this "Janet" and couldn't take to the film for that alone.
@@shersher78yeah she seemed more full of herself. Even if Franks influence has changed her she always seemed to have that spark of innocence in her. This one seemed kinda berating
The quality is so good. Thank you for this
In My Humble MF-ing Opinion, this needs a Broadway revival. Do a three and a half hour Science Fiction Double Feature - on stage - Rocky Horror = Act One ... Shock Treatment = Act Two.
People would be like: "Oh, how can the second act compare?"
Screw you, it does. I'd put the Shock Treatment songs up against the Rocky Horror songs any day of the week. They are both awesome.
Meat loafs song is the only one that tops Shock Treatment.
Honestly I'd probably rank them:
1. Time Warp
2. Hot Patootie
3. Little Black Dress
4. Duel Duet
5. Science Fiction Double Feature
6. Bitchin in the Kitchen
7. Dammit Janet
8. (everything else tied)
This was better than I'd heard it was. Richard O'Brien's right: the songs are good, even if the plot could be better. But, it's also very different than "Rocky Horror," and that may have thrown off the "Rocky" fans who expected a straightforward sequel.
Also that THE night has never been mentioned. With barely any connection to Rocky Horror you could just see Shock Treatment as a stand alone movie
@@instinctivelychelsea2905 yeah I forgot Richard had 5 ideas for a sequel and only shock treatment was actually made
It’s sad that the only reason Rocky Horror Shows His Heels (the one where Frank is brought back by blood and Janet is pregnant with his child) wasn’t made was because Tim Curry didn’t want to return for a sequel and didn’t think it was necessary.
This movie is so ahead of its time. It should have come out the same year as the Ricci Lake show.
The Sun never sets for those who ride into it
Barry Humphries steals every scene... as he should. 🤭😃☝🏼
You are so right. The man is great. Hoopla Barry!
The soundtrack is way better than the movie itself.
Is what I say about RHPS. Shock Treatment is way better.
I went to a screening at the Rialto a few months back! Now imagine if they played Shock Treatment.
Finally this video is no longer taken down by the SECAC
Thank you, what a treat this was.
Am I the only one to suspect Schnick is totally a Transylvanian? :D
thanks so much for uploading this! its been years since I saw it online. Yes, campy can be good, the songs often get stuck in my head, especially the night song.
2:49 The cinematic parallel to the first is a nice touch.
WAY ahead of it'd time in terms of reality TV and 'everyone' being 'famous' or seeking celebrity like today..
Give Brad and Janet a break they've been abducted by aliens.
Darkness unequivocally conquered them
Just so good. The soundtrack is better than Rocky Horror. Such a good film if you take it as a separate entity.
I love how there's a photo of those church cleaners from the rocky horror picture show
That’s American gothic
Let the haters hate, it's a an enjoyable film.
Thanks, downloading this rarity for my personal movie collection.
I have no clue what I just watched, but I'm glad I got to see it hahaha
I enjoyed this, but it doesn't work as a sequel to Rocky. As a stand alone film it is great fun and deserves to have been more successful. Well worth the watching
I feel like for it to work they could’ve mentioned the events of rocky horror and maybe that’s why Brad had to go to Dentonvale not because of his “failed marriage” and being “boring”
It’s funny women were usually in insane asylums if they didn’t bring enough to the marriage but it’s Brad as he always was more feminine in Rocky Horror
Thanks for uploading! Love the movie.
Janet had no life in her eyes. This was Richard O'brein trying to do a John Waters movie.
Fun fact: The guy who plays Bert is the same guy who voiced Bruce the shark in Finding Nemo
Another fun fact : Bert is the same guy that played Dame Edna for many years!! who woulda thunk it!
RIP Barry Humphries (1934 -2023) , a truly great and versatile actor.
It's definitely Rik Mayall, but this was only his third role as an actor. I barely recognized him because he was so young and low-key with his part.
38:30 - "Lullaby"? Yeah, I "Can't Get It Out of My Head."
This is as prophetic as Idiocracy. Thank you for the reminder!
THANKS I watched for the first time on Saturday and this is the third time I’ve watched it this week ahahaha
I'm glad you enjoyed it!!
RIP Barry Humphries aka Bert Schnick.
Feb. 17, 1934 - Apr. 22, 2023
14:45 “Bitchin’ in the Kitchen”; my favorite part. 😎
One of my favorite songs
@@Blitzwich “The subject is committed…as are we all.” 😵💫
Love it! Also, In My Own Way
I remember when this came out and the word of mouth was terrible from Rocky Horror fans. That's what killed it.
Honest to god I would d i e for Jess Harper. Best living actress, change my mind.
bullies suck.
I just found this today!
I'm so excited! 😍
Funny how this movie is available for free on UA-cam while Rocky Horror isnt. Guess the studio doesnt care about it, huh? Wonder why that is...
Finally watching this in 2024. First heard of it in 2002 or so. This is delightfully wierd i must say.
Well. this was strange.
The Oscar Drill and the Bits tune Breakin' Out at 1:11 sounds like it could have come from Dookie-era Green Day...
Richard O'brien is a genius.
i love this movie so much i can't even describe. i kinda like it more than rocky horror honestly
Same here!
I love this movie so much!!
So this is what happened after the events of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Riff Raff, Magenta, and Columbia return to Earth to invent reality TV.
Yeah i like the names Nation and Cosmo. Fun reference to transylvania being a Region and a Galaxy
and fix brad and janet.
With Partner shaming, very fast bits, and catchy songs, this movie predicted TikTok.
Little Black Dress is the only number I remembered from having seen it back in 1984.
I barely recognized Rik Mayall in this. He was so young, and he's so low-key compared to his later roles.
This was a blast to watch!
First time watching AND DAMM!!!! This film was way ahead of his time. Being a flop is about right. Van gogh only sold one paintting in his lifetime
kindof reminds me of All That Jazz
just another 80s/90s trip- some of the songs are fabulous and i love the staging and themes they use
Now that is one YOUNG Rik Mayall! Wow I had no idea he was in this. Haven't seen this before and goodness talk about being ahead of it's time!
Ahead of its time.
Absolutely, I think it’s more relevant now than when it came out
Underrated classic
Brilliant... Instead of the 'planned' audience all going home they stay the night & sleep in their seats as.... They 'd fall asleep in front of their Screens (TV or other) anyway!
thanks for this life experience.
UNDERRATED MASTERPIECE.
I was always too high to pay attention to this movie when I first saw it. Now I think I like the plot alot more.
Can't hold a candle to RHPS
