Funny thing is the actress actually had to tone down her belting to let Rick Moranis try to keep pace. Ellen Greene was a seasoned Broadway vet at this point, whereas Rick Moranis was quite a newbie.

@@2sallads Its a happy ending. Who doesn't like a happy ending? It wrapped up the movie much better than the original. Frank Oz agrees, i believe he stated that unlike a musical on the stage you don't get to see the actors come out and bow at the end. I love the original endings music and special effects, but it would have seriously hurt the movie.

When she sings with Seymour she belts out POWERFUL confident climactic song, because she's finally happy and in love for the first time. The speaking voice was just to make her more memorable, plus this is a comedy, and she sounds pretty ridiculous. lol I used to hate squeaky voices, but I've learned to like them a little more because of Betty Boop.

I think what people forget about this performance is that it's supposed to show a transition in Audrey. She goes from meek, scared, and beaten, to strong, confident, and empowered rather quickly. Ellen does a great job showing the emotions and awkwardness of that transition for Audrey. She's never been this confident in her life and she's probably on the verge of tears and screaming for happiness.

Rick hit it out of the park with his performance in this movie. His voice is great, even though the parts he has to sing aren't very demanding in terms of vocal range or technique.
I think it's something to do with how natural he's singing, there's no mannerisms and even very little acting in his performance. Everything he sings seems very genuine and pure because of it, and that just works so well for this movie, especially in this song where he's the supporting part to Ellen Greene's insane vocal talent. He is leaving so much room for her vocals to shine, that it's very easy to overlook the amount of emotional depth he's adding with his humble part.

I absolutely LOVE this scene and song, for both its musical and metaphorical greatness. Before this scene, Audrey was this dainty little flower, easily crushed by the boots of her abusive boyfriend. She was extremely shy and timid, never raising her voice above a whisper, but in this scene, she realizes that she doesn't have to be that way. She realizes that she is greater than what her old boyfriend said she was, and that she can be happy, despite what she previously believed. And she lets this out in a roar of emotion and, for the first time in the movie, she brings out her true self, a strong woman who can sing her heart out whenever she wants.

Leaves a sinking feeling deep down
not fulfilling it leaves an aching heart

He works every day to make sure I know I’m so much more, as well as push me to keep growing. I didn’t know how to fully express my feelings until I relistened to this song. This short little song has so much depth, you can hear Audrey start off timid and afraid, then as the realization starts to set in that Seymour is truly a nice person to her, probably the only nice guy her age she knows (Mushnik she probably sees as a father figure) her confidence builds, as Seymour gives her moral support, she realizes she’s stronger than she gave herself credit for, she finds her true voice and realizes Seymour has feelings for her, and she accepts them and steps forward into what she hopes is a better future, with Seymour by her side...

Yeah, because Mushnik does kind of care about her, by telling her constantly to leave Orin for her own safety, but he doesn’t do anything beyond that, really. True, feeding a dead body to a hungry plant isn’t exactly a good thing to do, but Seymour was all prepared to fight for her and got rid of the guy, so…

Because this film is SO funny and campy. Nostalgia, maybe...the fact I saw this movie when I was practically a baby, and miss being a kid so much, or the amazing, almost operatic harmony between them, and/or fact that the person I fell in love with and married is _my_ Seymour, and these particular lyrics kind of hit home:
    _Nobody ever treated me kindly_
_Daddy left early, mamma was poor_
_I'd meet a man and I'd follow him blindly_
_He'd snap his fingers, me, I'd say, "Sure"_
_Suddenly, Seymour is standing beside me_
_He don't give me orders, he don't condescend_
_Suddenly, Seymour is here to provide me_
    _Sweet understanding, Seymour's my friend_

Ellen Greene, the actress who played Aubrey, had to hold back while singing so Rick could keep up. Imagine how long she could have held that note if she didn't.

Having seen some recent pictures of Ellen Greene, WOW, she's aged like fifteen years in the past thirty. No wonder she came back as Audrey last year.

Ellen Greene is just two inches taller than Rick Moranis and it really shows.

Man, when I was a kid this was just a goofy fun movie. I did not appreciate how well they can sing.

NEVER has a performance made me breathless. I never understood what people meant by saying songs took their breath away. Now I FINALLY understand by her singing voice. I couldn’t believe it. When she belts out the song, I stopped breathing, and I didn’t even notice that I wasn’t breathing at first. I got goosebumps. I can’t believe that’s her voice. Truly unique and unforgettable. Thank you.

It's simply one of the greatest cinematic musical numbers in film history, and I will always love Frank Oz, Ellen Greene, and Rick Moranis for pulling it off. Whoever blocked and filmed this knew wtf they were doing. The distance between the two characters, metaphorically and physically, how will these two meet each other and actually make it work? And Audrey works it out, and Seymour does too with just his own under-developed schlub of a personality without ever puffing out his chest and just a little "woo-woo-woo" from the chorus, and we all totally buy the kiss at the end. Magic!

When it comes to belting into someones face, it always helps to have a breathmint beforehand.

She’s amazing belting that out, hats off to Rick too for singing his heart out. He’s a great actor and she’s a great singer but she acts well and he sings well. Perfect scene

The stones on Moranis, to sing this beside the lady that helped make this a Broadway hit. I couldn't have taken that pressure.

I'm hearing this song for the first time in 17 years and am so moved. I need to watch this film again. Also, I think I just developed a huge crush on Rick Moranis in 4 minutes and 14 seconds.
