    This game deserves more recognition than it gets. It is the first FPS to feature 3D polygon enemies, and a truly 3D environment with complete freedom of movement. It is every bit as important to the gaming industry as DOOM and Wolfenstein 3D.

    • @phillippi2
      @phillippi2 4 роки тому +14

      This is actually NOT the first game with a truly 3d environment. Ultima Underworld 1 and 2 and System Shock beat them to it. UU 1 was contemporary with Wolfenstein 3d. It was notable for being the first fully 3d texture-mapped game.

      @@chelonianegghead274 Actually, no; For that, you have to go all the way back to 1982, with a game called StarGlider (the main inspiration for Star Fox).

      @canttellyousorryaboutthat716 3 роки тому +19

      I can actually correct you both! Starglider didn't use polygonal graphics and rather used distorted sprites and shading to give the illiusion of 3d and the underworld games were only 3d texture mapped, not fully 3d and functioned similar to that of a build engine game, the first game to feature a polygonal eneimy was the system shock prototype with the unused lifter enemy.

    A demo version of this was on the new PC my mom bought in 1996. I spent hours playing it and I even called Parallax Software talking to a very friendly rep about the merits of 'Descent'. They sent me a flyer in the mail advertising all of their games. The 90's were a fantastic time for PC gamers with so many groundbreaking games, new internet sites devoted to them and the rise of gaming culture.

      I, too, played the demo version that came on a PC my family had bought. I LOVED this game and played it for hours on end. Time just seemed to slip by when I sat down to play. I made it all the way to the last 'demo' level (level 30 or 35?), and then it gave a message that I needed to purchase the full game to continue.

    I'll never forget getting lost during the escape mission here with the countdown timer. With 5 seconds left I almost gave up, but I saw the exit out of the corner of my eye. Racing through it with 1 second to spare then getting that cutscene of a Star Wars-like escape through the explosion gave me SUCH a thrill as a young 8 year old! I'll never forget this game!

Four of us would play over the company network at lunch time against each other, it was crazy fun. I'll always remember struggling to beat the super hulk boss, the one that has cloaking and fires those homing plasma missiles early on in the game, before you're able to discover and use them.
    it took me WEEKS to figure out how to beat him. literally, it took me a few weeks to finally figure out how to beat him. i struggled. so much. i'd go in with 200/200.. and i got so close so mant times. it elevated the plasma missile to legendary godlike status in my mind. once i finally beat him, i flipped out and went crazy with excitement. moments like this are what i remember the most about gaming as a kid.

      I played this game on a Forte VFX1 headset back in the 90's, at some mall kiosk someone had setup with VR stuff, so i know it was somehow playable. It was pretty rad

    Playing multiplayer locally in this game was so crazy then. Imagine being in the Philippines and being completely inlove with this game. 6 of us would play and have random dudes in the computer shop play along with us kids. The son of the computer shop absolutely wrecked us all. Imagine having a computer shop near your school and you're the son of the owner. That kid was on another level and ruined our games haha
    Nice to see what Descent was like for them in other countries. I didn't have the luxury to be able to exchange messages with its dev since I was in the Philippines at the time.

    Had an elementary school computer teacher who had all of our computers on a LAN. If we had time after the lesson that day and we behaved, he’d let us blow up each other in this game.
    Was always fun blowing up the annoying popular kids I must say. Such a great teacher. I’ll never forget it.

    Wasn't there an earlier, really primitive version? Barely more than wireframe?

    Acclaim did a clone of this well worthy of attention as well. It had very smooth graphics and insane lighting effects. It was called Forsaken and me and my buddies would play the excellent N64 port in 4p splitscreen

    Was just reminiscing about Forsaken64 with my siblings, the reason I wanted to get Foresaken 64 was because I loved Descent so much.

    Mi primer videojuego, lo jugaba en las rodillas de mi padre en el 1998 siempre le decia "el juego de los bichos" y en esa parte que se ponia las paredes verdes y salian mas naves yo le decia que era un nido.
