Wow, this looks great, if somewhat shiny. Unbelievably all that has changed is the way light is calculated. Even the textures are still at their old resolution.
agreed! @@TheArchitect4K i got overlord on GOG but haven't gotten around to playing it yet... i keep playing descent 1&2 tho, on some mac ports i got ages ago, and the disk for descent 3 must be here somewhere :P
@@LoganWolf have you tried the ray-tracing version of Descent 1 ? I did the first two levels its amazing how lightning changes everything in old games 🤩
All that lighting engine work and no way to have it affect the brightness of a static sprite overlay so that it makes it look like the lighting is affecting the cockpit, dang.
@@videogamevlogs3765 it is ! But this is not the latest version of the mod, maybe I should try out the newer one. Also, there are many settings you can tweak, perhaps the one that makes it bloomy was turned up too high lol
@@frenchfrey65 yeah I don't know all the hidden items lol but sometimes I just skip them to go quicker on the mission time, depends how I want to play it lol
To be fair, Freespace 1 and 2 have been having regular graphical updates up until current times through the Freespace Open Project. It probably wouldn't be as impactful to see ray-tracing over old polygons and textures on something that we're used to seeing looking good already by using traditional methods.
Unfortnately no :( the group that made this, made it as a project for the university but now the work is stopped. Descent 2 wasnt in the plans... I wish we had this game re-made in 4K, with a 3rd person mode to see that beautiful Pyro-GX in 4k lol. There is a mod for descent 2 that gives better graphics than the original, but no ray tracing...
this is how I remember the game looking in my head on old CRT tube monitors

sweet. that looks dope. long live descent!
I miss it so much ! Started playing Overlord tho... i love it but nothing beats the iconic Pyro-GX

@@TheArchitect4K your videos are how i found out something like that had been made. were all 30 levels made with this tech or just the first 2 levels?
@@LoganWolf I think all levels from Descent 1 only, not Descent 2 nor 3 unfortunately !
Now we talking! Can't wait to see v1 of this with all the PBR materials!!!

@@chaosvolt yeah... but hey its a side-project from very few people who were studying lol... way better than nothing 😊
@@TheArchitect4K Fair, no worries.Interesting to see regardless.
Exactly I would rather they preserve and enhance the original game as it was. Way too dark.
is it just me or is it TOO "BLOOM-ISH".

you missed the hidden laser upgrade

I just wish the planetary surface was lit.
ya see, this is the stuff i need to learn.
the gpu is auto blooming light points.
i'm still manually adding/lighting blooms, lel.
you gotta do this over on descent freespace 1+2

What about descent 2??
Is there a mod for this in Descent 2 or is this for just Descent 1 only?

Damn!@@TheArchitect4K
The lighting is too bright and everything else is too dark.
