Only here for Andrew Scott. He's such a powerhouse talent.
Met Andrew Scott in West Hollywood at a tanning salon getting his glow on the day of the Globes in which he was nominated in the big category. He made a point of introducing himself and was a doll.
like a real tanning bed?? Aren't those bad for you?

he is my borfriend
Totally agree! 8 hour 5 star film. Pure class and captivating. Cinematography was AMAZING! LOVED IT!
Grace have you seen 2023s "All Of Us Strangers" with Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal ( and Jamie Bell and Claire Foye)? I think youd love it!
Oh yeah she would totally cry
This movie shattered me
that movie made me wanna die
Still think he should have got at least an Oscar nom for that movie.
I cried for hours, amazing movie
For me, you are so right on this one. Ripley is a jewel, a masterpiece streaming show, made with such precision and a true labor of love. It doesn't seem like it was made in our time. Andrew Scott is a rare, versatile talent. Ripley really does seem like a high art, great movie.
Did anyone think this was an Alien spin-off? 😂
That did cross my mind when I first saw the poster, even though my mind ultimately knew that it wasn’t. It’s the combination of the name and the font.
Up until the point I was the first trailer 😅😮😅
Wish it was
The sound design alone should win an emmy! I was totally drawn in to this world of clacking footfalls, quietly crackling cigarettes, obtrusive ringing phones and startling door knocks - loved it!
Thats an excellent point. Yes, they got the best artists in all categories, and I love how you describe it -and the sound of the elevator, the ocean and more.
💯
Ad no musical soundtrack. Only music was what was part of the story.
Dakota Fanning was in equalizer 3, I wonder if she filmed this show the movie at the same time ? 🤔 😂😂
easy
I FINALLY saw All Of Us Strangers and Andrew Scott wrecked me. He was so good and now I'll always look forward to seeing ALL his work.
Maybe the non binary actor was just play a male character not a trans character?
Yup
I am obsessed with the scenes that show Ripley looking into Marge’s house through the window. The duality of those scenes alone - first as someone who is on the outside looking in and then second as a spy to find out what Dickie and Marge are thinking - is amazing
Yes, I agree. you are right. There is so much there -layers of things.
what about the scene where a female singer performs on the stairs. Utterly mersmerising.
The bit with the stairs in the first episode was hilarious
I feel like this is the kind of stuff that should be on HBO. Because it has an HBO-level quality and prestige feel to it
For me, Andrew Scott,s signature rolê will always be Moriarty. The line “In a world of locked rooms, the man with the key is king. And honey, you should see me in a crown” always give me goosebumps.
That whole pool scene with Moriarty and Sherlock sold me on Scott. What a bold acting choice but Scott makes it work so well.
Andrew Scott is formidable. He is absolutely brilliant.
Andrew Scott is really on a roll, love that for him ❤
Johnny Flynn is great too! Loved him in Emma. Loved him in love sick. Loved him in Einstein.
Loved him in The Outfit
This show is a perfect suspense masterpiece on par with Hitchcock. Nailed it Grace
I love Ripley’s Believe it or Not!!!
👋🤣😎😉
Believe it
Thought it was from the ALIENS franchise 😂😂😂
Me too!! I thought I was the only one❤
Same! 😂
lol then you need you some help
Andrew Scott is everything! He’s such a force, I’m looking forward to that show 💗
I think that this series is a masterpiece, and every frame is a work of art. It does have so many cinematic references, that its essential viewing for film students. It adheres closely to the source material. Having said that, I do like the 1999 movie and this series, equally, even though they are very different. Part of the fun is comparing the two -one story that told so differently. This series many be tough going for some as its not "entertaining", or likable compared to the movie. The Damon and Juse Law version is an iconic fashion travelogue, and in that presentation Damon is much more likable, and the boat scene was not premeditated but an act of passion. The series shows how truly cold-blooded the character is, and the series is similar in tone in being measured, taut, foreboding.
Great to see the re-emergence of glorious black and white! More, please.
You have to see Purple Noon. I believe it’s the first adaptation of this book. It’s really good. It is in French though. So subtitles
Andrew Scott is brilliant as always - and while I didn't wholly buy him as Ripley - he's so invested and nuanced in his approach, he pulls it off regardless. The cinematography is gorgeous and the direction is solid. BUT, Scott aside, the casting is pretty flat - a monotone, low energy Eliot Sumner as Freddie Miles is especially a criminal choice and makes no sense within the parameters of the show. The writing also plods and too much time is spent on small details like packing a suitcase for 3 minutes - while the key character relationships that drive the story feel neglected and underdeveloped. The whole thing feels like a very beautiful, interesting, sadly wasted opportunity.
Agreed, this show could benefit a lot if it cuts down to 6 episodes. I get that maybe those shoots are too beautiful to not be used, but sometimes you have to. This happens a lot in these ''artsy'' media.
Your “review” was much more accurate than Grace’s! Holy crap, this woman is shallow!
This is some of the best television I’ve seen since breaking bad and better call Saul. Yes. That good. Cinematography. Sound score. Acting. Setting. The mood created. It all adds up to a wonderful experience. Loved it.
You had me at Hitchcock...
For anyone who likes a good read 📚, the Mr Ripley movie and show are based on a series of books, and they're pretty good. Hopefully the show added more of the book than the movie could, also if it's a hit they could do the other 4 books ( 5 in all)
This was a absolutely amazing show ... I saw it in the weekend all episodes ...no spoilers ( that ending was formidabele ....
Excellent show. Gorgeously shot, especially episode 3. It was breathtaking! Episode 5 reminds me a lot of Fincher.
Even the Matt Damon version is a remake of the 60’s original, titled PURPLE NOON.
The night of is a masterpiece
I just saw the whole series and it was amazing. My top favorite series of 2024 and best performance! It was so good and enraviling. It was indeed like watching a full on suspend movie instead like of episodes. Best adaption of a series i seen on Netflix.
This is so beautifully filmed
The whole thing has substance is so good. I watched The Talented Mr Ripley it’s just lame. 5 stars way to go. . Beautiful
I'm sold grace 😅, pausing to go watch
Thank you so much for Reviewing this!! I’m a huge Andrew Scott fan, especially after “All of Us Strangers”
Just started and I. CANNOT. STOP! Love that you're spotlighting this with a review!
Interesting to see this after reading the review of the show from Variety. Variety’s opinion of the show is that the Italy locations are gorgeously shot in black and white.
Great Stuff, as always! I should pull this into schedule, I should have a lot more time during the summer.
I’m about to start this and I came to watch this first. It’s literally up on my screen right now to see if it’s worth my time so thanks Grace!
Haven't had a chance to watch the show yet (It's my binge for tonight), but regarding the trans stuff. It was actually relatively common for people to transition, enter into a new social circle, and never have a problem back in the day. You needed the money to transition convincingly, of course, and for trans guys you couldn't really have a sex life, but if you did that and kept everything pre-transition hush-hush, then you could easily come off as just a new person in the room. Lots of money required to pull it off, but not impossible.
The thing is they find a supposedly 'male' corpse who turns out to very obviously be a biological female in 1960 Italy and no one bats an eye. And come on 'it was relatively common for people to transition' in the 1960s?
Watched it for Johnny Flynn!
Grace: Do not pass GO, do not collect $200 . . . get thee to All Of Us Strangers, another gem of a performance from Andrew Scott.
Ridley is also an amazing series of great books by Patricia Highsmith. All shockers.
I loved it as much as you did.
@BeyondtheTrailer Grace ! I’m surprised you didn’t touch on the fact that, in addition to this series and *The Equalizer* being shot in the same location, Dakota Fanning was in both projects ! Happy viewing everyone !
Great review! I was surprised by how artistic and fresh this adaptation was.
I prefer Ridley's Game!
Don’t stay up too late Grace 😮
Omg first, love you Grace!
Added to my list on NF, thanks Grace. Sidenote-hair is consistently on fleek lately.
This seems like something my father would like lol.
Honestly. That’s probably true
I absolutely loved the subway window tight shot. As he zooms out from the square window.
The cast choice was excellent!
Looking forward.
I've seen the film but don't remember anything really from it so this will be even more fun experiencing the story again
What a great review!!! I loved it!!! I'm gonna watch it right now!!! thanks
Even tho I won't watch this series, thx for your time and work 🙏🏻
Far from perfect but definitely worth the watch.
Yes! Can't wait! Loved Scott in 'All of Us Strangers' - where was his Oscar nomination? I'll be checking this out for sure.
I completely agree. Great review.
Heya Grace…l really like your work..cheers 🎉
Saltburn came out last year seem a bit soon
Totally agree with you on just about everything. It’s a masterpiece, loved it, and I too am jealous of anyone who hasn’t seen it yet. I thought Sumner, however, was perfectly cast in the role as Freddie. The way he saw through Tom’s lies about Dickie thus adding such a cool extra layer of suspense was epic. Although perhaps not as masterful an actor as the others, Sumner still did an amazing job.
Thanks for an excellent review!
Ive been a long time Grace viewer and let me tell yall... This might very be her best review
Brilliantly Done!
just found you and man I loved what I heard. the cinematography was spot on. I keep taking pics of my TV to later draw and paint as a series I'm working on and this one is every scene. fannings understatement is legendary and andrew had me at Moriarty...I mean had me over cumberbuns even. can't wait to see the next 6 episodes and all your content.stay sexy
I thought this thing was the origin story of Sigourney Weaver’s character from Aliens. 😕
The reserved scenes in this show are amazing. Reminds me a lot of Easy, very long scenes of just conversation or someone writing or something.
SALTBURN WAS A TALENTED MR RIPLEY RIP OFF!!!
With a lot of Brideshead Revisited.
Good review. Love the enthusiasm.
Thanks!🙏
Thank you so much! So kind of you! :)
Do you need to have seen the original movie to enjoy this? Should I watch that first to fully appreciate this?
I would not recommend that, the movie is superior in every way. Watch the movie afterwards, you will see my point.
Perfect. I've learned so much!
It was mostly artsy. captivated Italy’s beauty. But I was a little disappointed in the script. Fanning was boring. Scott was magnificent, however. So was the inspector.
It was also made as "Purple noon " with Alan Delon
I'm guessing you didn't watch All of us strangers because is really depressing, but that movie made me an Andrew Scott superfan! I mean I loved him before but now is one of my favoirtes ♥
I hope this is for Andrew Scott what Halston was for Ewan Mcgregor but even bigger
I loved this show!
the poster reminds me of Alien instead of Talented Mr Ripley lol
Funny story! Hitchcock adapted a lot of Patricia Highsmith (Strangers on a Train and Rope), which The Talented Mr Ripley is a Patricia Highsmith novel.
Scott was amazing in All of us Strangers
Yay Alien 6
Will u do an invincible s2 spoiler brekdown❤
here me watching this
its amazing to see back in the day what the form of communication was and how its so easy to deceive ppl with letters
I think the character of Freddie is just supposed to be a male. I'm not sure where it was suggested he is trans, unless there is something I missed. I don't think it would make sense for him to be trans, as you pointed out. If the character of Freddie was trans, you are right it would be a much bigger deal at that time... and considering the care they put into every other aspect of this show, it's odd they would not explore that.... Freddie was only in 2 episodes and only briefly in one of those. Also, after Freddie's death... the newspapers kept referring to him as a man in their reporting. That definitely wouldn't be the case after the coroner examined the body.
I personally didn't know who Eliot Sumner was, so I went into the show without that knowledge of their background. Maybe that's why I didn't get the vibe that the character was trans? I'm thinking maybe they just cast a non-binary actor in the role because... why not? I don't think NB actors should only ever be offered NB roles. Maybe this was their line of thinking also.
I didn’t interpret Freddie as trans
I totally agree. I know trans people and the thought that Freddie was trans never occurred to me.
Isn’t Salt Burn basically a Ripley remake? Did we need another?
I wish you would have reviewed “All of Us Strangers” 😭 it was so good and sad 😔
I'm glad the show is good because I want Andrew Scott to succed. That said I'm not that interested in watching this show. When Showtime announced it they said they planned to adapt all the novels so I was willing to revisit this first story. But now that Netflix has rebranded it as a mini-series I'm like "Why should I watch it then?". I'm sorry but for me Matt Damon's adaptation is excellent so I don't care to watch another version of it that doesn't lead to anything. Especially because I'm not really a tv-show kind of guy to begin with.
I have been a fan of Patricia Highsmith and her Ripley books since I first read The Talented Mr Ripley in 1971 and have watched both film versions by Alain Delon and Matt Damon. I didn't find Andrew Scott as a very convincing Tom Ripley. First, he is 48 years old and looks every bit of it in the series. Tom is 25 years old when he meets up with Mr Greenleaf, as is his son Richard. That's almost 20 years difference! And to make matters worse, Johnny Flynn, who plays the part of Dickie, is 41! I watched all 8 episodes and in many ways enjoyed it as I did with Cine Noir films in the very distant past. But as a version of the original book, not for me.
it’s the hot priest!
Can anybody tell me why people are constantly walking up and down steps. It must have a hidden meaning but i'm not clever enough to to fathom it.
It was not bad . Acting by the lead was top notch and convincing as a sociopath . A good take on Freddie Miles . But I felt it did not offer any new big bang over the original . The boat thing was kind of ridiculous and unnecessary . The original boat scene was 10x more powerful and dramatic . Some other nonsensical points also . Overall the original was not beaten here .
Grace, I started watching it this morning and I felt the same as you. I have only watched the first two episodes. I may start it over from the beginning because I am sure I have missed a few things. I love Hitchcock too. I also thought the cinematography is beautiful.
As a black gay man, thanks for using the pride flag you choose.
Proud of what?
Great review. On the topic of Freddie Miles and the non binary actor: I count it as one of the few flaws (if not the only one) of the show. In the sense that it takes you out of the story. I think it makes sense that it was brushed over, in terms of the story, as it’s of no implication to the character. I suspect Eliot was taken onboard of the show based on Netflix’s quota for diversity.
It remained me of Stanley Kubrick Lolita
Almodóvar has gotten close to Hitchcock
It's just a limited series.
