These 2 episodes are PERFECT. The way the relationships were portrayed, each character having their own desires, Storm being recognized as an Omega level mutant, Rogue and Magneto, Jean and Storm’s scene and Cyclops actually being the leader and being shown to be a strategic and impulsive. Also, Logan and Morph’s friendship was really cute. The show does move really quick and a lot of story is shown at us really quickly. But honestly, two solid episodes. She also keeps criticising the show for putting character "telenovela" drama over action, but Chris Claremont wrote the comic for 17 years, and any X-Men fan will tell you he prioritised soap opera-esque interpersonal drama over action. @@SWOTHDRA The show, while being set in the 90s, has adults like Gambit, who grew up in the 80s and would wear 80s style fashion as well. 90s design, however, was unapologetic camp.
Neither of you know what you’re talking about. In the original Lee Kirby run his powers was just black lines. Then in 90s through to the current run, his powers have blue. Even on the famous cover she JUST showed you from 1991, they’re blue.
It feels like from this review you read the comics but never watched the show. They truncated lots of story lines from the comics. Which is fine. They don't have 12 books to publish every year. They don't need to draw things out.
IIRC you said you ultimately decided against rewatching the original series in preparation for this continuation. You really should've. The writing was just as "Cliff Notes" back then.
😂😂😂😂😂 Grace thinks just because she says constantly that she reads comics - makes her an expert. She isn’t even a expert on film/tv never mind comics. You can clearly tell from her reaction she NEVER grew up with this show.
Grace - I’ve been watching you and your other channels since day one for over a decade, but I can’t sit with you on this, sis. Your takes seen really bizarre and absurd. Yes, the episodes were fast-paced. But the entire run of the original cartoon was very rushed. They speedran the DoFP AND Phoenix/Dark Phoenix storylines. But it’s a cartoon. And they had to streamline not just decades, but *generations* of comic lore and stories. The criticism on “cliff notes” and telling/hinting at stories we already know is not a fair statement. Not everyone who watches the cartoons had ever read the comics. So naturally, they’re introducing these things as new for the audience, because for most viewers, they *are* new. As for the writing, I actually found the writing much better than I expected. The dialogue was well-written, snappy and punchy.
Considering this is a continuation of the original series i believe they felt like it would be a waste of time introducing the X-Men again over an extended period of time, especially since the original is on Disney+ for all to see
Isn’t that kind of how the original started out with? Every now and then they would have cameos of characters that you wouldn’t really know unless you read the comics. When Carol Danvers was still being called Ms Marvel, I had no clue who she was other than her connection with Rogue.
Grace….sometimes I don’t know WTF you’re blathering about. 🤣😂 EUPHORIA? They went to a bar and it’s suddenly EUPHORIA??? It was basically an average Saturday night in Sunnyvale scene. You’re grasping with every straw, bro. lol
You refer to the Claremont/Lee era as if it had lasted beyond the first 3 issues of X-Men. Both were out after that. When Jim Lee started working on Uncanny X-Men the team was disbanded after everything that went down in the australian outback and only began to regroup after the X-Tinction Agenda event. The character dynamics we see in the show were present before Jim Lee worked on the series.
I’m a huge Cyclops fan who loves his abilities and leadership questions. X-men ‘97 did him justice. Also the respect for Storm as an Omega level goddess.
I was a casual X-Men fan before this, with most of my knowledge coming from the movies, but I am absolutely LOVING this show! It’s perfect so far for me. Have never been as big of an X-Men fan as I am right now.
I personally think that for a show that will only be around 8-10 episodes long this pace is just perfect, too many Disney plus shows in the past had us feeling like nothing was happening until around ep 4 and the the last two were super rushed trying to get the story all wrapped up.
It came back so much better than I thought it would, I think it's totally in line with the previous iteration but a lot more focused with this version and I actually prefer the writing in '97. The animation has just the right amount of update yet still feels 90's 👍👍
Die hard xmen fan here and these 2 episodes are perfect I was crying and all the promise of what's to come, cyclops being awesome, god I loved it, and my self from the 90s would have died enjoying watching these I'm so happy. Get off the grouch train grace, rewatch the animated series and join the party this is so good my mind exploded it was so good !! If the mcu does the xmen along this vein, god I can't wait for the future!!!!
Considering we get so few animation episodes these days, I'm really glad they're telling a lot of story in each episode so they feel more meaningful and less like fillers.
Respectfully, Grace, the writing in these first two episodes was great. It was easily on par with the very best of the original series. The X-Men has such a big cast that the writers can't focus on all the characters simultaneously. Putting the emphasis on Scott, Jean and Magneto during this transition of leadership was a good call. And this is a continuation of the original series; that's why groups like the Friends of Humanity don't need long introductions.
All I can say is that those first two episodes were amazing. Everything they're doing with Magneto is brilliant. And I love how the legacy of Xavier is driving the plot. It really drives home what a great man he was.
Asking why this show exists….its not that deep Grace. It’s for entertainment. It’s a cartoon. A good cartoon. Most watchers did not read the comics. This is new material for a lot of people. You need to see it from the point of view from someone who just wants to watch a good show & that’s what this is.
Grrrrrrlllll, you crazy! Grace, this was PHENOMENAL! This gives me EVERYTHING that the movies did not. It also seems to be keeping it fresh by pulling from the X-Men's wealth of classic storylines. The things that most excited me were seeing proper renditions of Storm and Cyclops (who got short shrift in the Fox films despite being the two major leaders of the team), Rogue going off and being powerful, and the amazing visuals! I subscribed to D+ to watch and am pleased as punch
As a new X-Men fan, this show worked PERFECTLY for me. When it ended, i was craving more. Can’t wait to see what’s next and SO glad there’s more seasons coming!
As someone who doesn't and has never read an X-Men comic I was eating up all the drama. When the helicopters landed to get Magneto i was like no go back to the drama with Wolverine and Jean please lol. It really is like a Soap Opera with powers and I'm down for it tbh
I’ve said this for years… X-men should be its own corner and not even mix in with the “MCU”. X-men deserves to be adult and darker. These tones that may “narrow” the audience, I say GOOD! We as true fans always have known it was an allegory for real world. And that’s how I want the live action X-men to be, real world concerns. But what Grace said, business wise that is hard.. but fingers crossed and hoping
I mean its incredible they managed to fit soooo many storylines into such a short time and actually make it kinda work, but it is pushed to its limits for sure, love the show so far
I could not be happier with the show, its gorgeous and the nostalgic in all the best ways. The stories and writing were really strong to me, they know these characters! It did feel fast paced but with only 10 episodes I understand.
Grace , adore you but imo you are so off on this one. The writing was great , especially episode 2. Sometimes I think you think way to much about business and forget to just be a fan. Love the content just an observation.
OMT, the X-Men had drama and romance way before Lee came onto the book. Also, Psylocke joined the X-Men years before Lee came onto the book. Remember, Claremont was writing the UNCANNY X-MEN comic for about 15 years before Jim Lee came onto the book as the artist. So all of the stuff that you are crediting to the Claremont and Lee era were already in the comics before Lee came onto the book.
Writing None Existent. Sorry Grace I couldn't disagree more. They took a classic cartoon and Improved on it. That Never happens/ Batman the Animated series had 3 fantastic spin offs and Obviously kora was a great spin off. But never has a reboot taken the torch and ran with it.
I went from watching the original 5 seasons straight to watching the first two epsiodes and it fits perfectly with the classic series Grace! You are way off on that!

Yeah I’m a bit shocked with how off base she is with this review
IIRC you said you ultimately decided against rewatching the original series in preparation for this continuation. You really should've. The writing was just as "Cliff Notes" back then.
😂😂😂😂😂 Grace thinks just because she says constantly that she reads comics - makes her an expert. She isn’t even a expert on film/tv never mind comics.
You can clearly tell from her reaction she NEVER grew up with this show.
When I saw Psylocke popping up at the court scene, I was like Yeah!! They definitely know how to use Morph to please the fans.
This reminds me of her Mario review unfortunately, it’s shockingly out of touch.
Considering this is a continuation of the original series i believe they felt like it would be a waste of time introducing the X-Men again over an extended period of time, especially since the original is on Disney+ for all to see
When I saw Dr. Cooper i yelled
"It's Grace Randolph!" 😂
I did too 😂
Isn’t that kind of how the original started out with?
"More talking and drama than accion" that sound exactly like the Xmen to me jajajaj a soap opera with powers
Yep
Claremont's X-Men was very well known for being a soap opera! I don't get where this take of hers came from.
I was a casual X-Men fan before this, with most of my knowledge coming from the movies, but I am absolutely LOVING this show! It’s perfect so far for me. Have never been as big of an X-Men fan as I am right now.
When the sentinel clocked an "omega level mutant" and Storm ate his a** up!!!!! Loooooooved it.
Grace is killing the jacket game with this one 🔥
I loved these first two episodes!!! I'm so happy to have X-Men again!
Yeah looks awesome wish I had that jacket
Die hard xmen fan here and these 2 episodes are perfect I was crying and all the promise of what's to come, cyclops being awesome, god I loved it, and my self from the 90s would have died enjoying watching these I'm so happy.
Get off the grouch train grace, rewatch the animated series and join the party this is so good my mind exploded it was so good !! If the mcu does the xmen along this vein, god I can't wait for the future!!!!
Considering we get so few animation episodes these days, I'm really glad they're telling a lot of story in each episode so they feel more meaningful and less like fillers.
Morph also was Sabertooth
I literally could not be more happier with it. THEY WENT THERE
Where?
Asking why this show exists….its not that deep Grace. It’s for entertainment. It’s a cartoon. A good cartoon. Most watchers did not read the comics. This is new material for a lot of people. You need to see it from the point of view from someone who just wants to watch a good show & that’s what this is.
X-Men telenova? More like X-Men teleCassandraNova.
Wow, I love the writing
As a new X-Men fan, this show worked PERFECTLY for me. When it ended, i was craving more. Can’t wait to see what’s next and SO glad there’s more seasons coming!
I’m grateful to get new XMen content again and ITS GREAT!
The disrespect of storm must STOP 🛑
She'll recover.....it's showing a different side to someone who is extremely powerful and can be vulnerable
I could not be happier with the show, its gorgeous and the nostalgic in all the best ways. The stories and writing were really strong to me, they know these characters! It did feel fast paced but with only 10 episodes I understand.
Damn. 4am in NY. That's real dedication Grace. You're awesome 🙌🏻
Probably pre-recorded. They got screeners.
I’m a X-men fan Grace and I here for all of this! Fast paced is better than nothing IMO.
She got screeners.
She’s watched beyond ep 2
Grace , adore you but imo you are so off on this one. The writing was great , especially episode 2. Sometimes I think you think way to much about business and forget to just be a fan. Love the content just an observation.
She’s so off base it’s actually insane
All I heard were complaints and this show did an amazing job really the best product dropped from marvel in a long time
OMT, the X-Men had drama and romance way before Lee came onto the book.
I always thought the original X-men cartoon moved way too slow, so I’m a huge fan of this breakneck pace in X-Men 97’
Grace, the pacing is fast but the writing is actually very good and sharp
Die hard fan here. LOVE IT SO FAR! CANNOT wait until next week! It makes me wanna read the comics again.
New drinking game: take a shot every time Grace says "YA KNOW" :)
Gosh I’m not happy about going back to the 2pm drop time. But I’m so excited to finally be here with XMen 97 so good !
Did u ever watch the cartoon series
The point is because it’s fun!!! Don’t think too much into it!!
I mean wolverine's claws are adamantium ,virtually indestructible so makes sense to me why gambit put his powers on them🤷🏾♂️
I loved the show! I agree with the power colors I wish Jeans were pink and Magnetos were blue/purple!!
What's the point of this show? Um....fun? Entertainment? Remember shows made to entertain?
they’ve got to bring storm back right?!
i’m loving this show so much
I thought it was way better than I expected
Magneto is a beast i loved when he had the choppers facing the ops after they tried to scare him with our non metal guns
Wow, Grace. You totally missed the point of this show.
I went from watching the original 5 seasons straight to watching the first two epsiodes and it fits perfectly with the classic series Grace! You are way off on that!
Grace, I literally returned to Disney+ for this. Very well written. Structurally sound per episode. ❤️ well done. Had a good time and that’s all I want- to escape this crazy 2024 and go back to ‘97. 😅
