      I like Scotty Kilmer but disagree with this video.
      A turbochraged car with a small engine will get poor gas mileage if you drive it with a lead foot flooring it all the time but will get good gas mileage if you are light on the pedal.
      Recently we rented a 2018 Chevy Malibu with a 1.5L turbocharged engine and got ~35 mpg on a ~550 mile road trip. That's pretty darn good for a medium to large car that's bigger than a Honda Accord.

    • @BensCoffeeRants

      That's pretty good, but it's true though. Highway you probably weren't using the turbo too much. My turbo car only gets decent fuel efficiency when coasting along on the highway.

    People need to take into consideration that Scotty only mentions things you shouldn't do if you want a car that is reliable and cheap to maintain. Any increase in power is directly a decrease in long term reliability. There is absolutely no case where that isn't the truth. Added complexity ALSO always results in a decrease in long term reliability.

      @RebelOnision 6 років тому +13

      Trevor Cunning, I agree with you. I disliked this video because many of the points were wrong. Many if not most turbos today are cooled using engine coolant more than oil, so the "not changing your oil" is kind of a moot point. Also a turbo engine will not last as long as a regular one, but you're going to have to get two new transmissions before that becomes an issue.

      C.A.F.E. Standards, thanks to Bush and Obama administrations. 1.5 and 1.6l turbos are a joke. Hardly any noticeable benefits compared to a 2.3 to 2.5 liter NA four-popper, but it helps auto companies meet emissions standards.
      And the companies love this, because it allows them to jack up the prices on their fleet while white-lying to us customers saying, "Welp, we have to, so sorry." Like when rollover regulations forced companies to beef up A and C pillars on their cars creating the huge blind spots on modern vehicles. Car companies didn't bitch and moan because they could put in cameras and screens, mark up the prices crazily, and say "THE GOVT. MADE US DO IT!"

    • @Aerogrow
      @Aerogrow 6 років тому +3

      I guess; the issues with turbo/supercharger motors is more of thing of past. Most you can run crap 87 and the knock sensor along with computer will reduce boost automagically, i have 250k on a ecoboost truck with dual superchargers which is not unheard of / uncommon. Had a high mileage srt4; rest of car fell apart (frigging super rust bucket) but that motor was solid.
      Think he is showing his mechanic hate for turbos cars; as they are a royal pain in the ass to work on. Gotten better over years; but burning back of hand is almost mandatory anytime you do anything.

    Water cooled turbos and synthetic oil have helped turbo reliability a lot. Early turbos had crude electric/vacuum controls for the turbo waste gate and many engines were not really designed for turbos so head gaskets and other failures were common. A friend had a Daytona turbo with a common K car 2.2L that ate head gaskets so this is an example of that. Time will tell how today's turbos hold up when maintained properly and driven sanely. I know it will be much better than the 80's turbocharged cars.

    I'm with you on this one!!! Turbos can, & often do wear out before the engine. Number of factory turbo cars I've replaced the turbo chargers on is staggering. There are even those that use the engine coolant to help cool them along with the engine oil. Regular oil changes are only part of ensuring long turbo life. The other thing is correct grade of oil. Too thin, you might as well be using water, & too thick will cause premature seal wear. My car has no turbo, but has enough power for my liking.

    You're right on Scotty. I'll never buy an unreliable turbocharged vehicle which has higher maintenance. They require more frequent oil and spark plug changes and have a history of developing oil dilution problems after their warranties expire, which are very costly to repair. So, if the vehicle has a turbo engine, then I'm not buying! And I'm buying a new non turbo crossover within a year. I want total reliability, which you definitely don't get with turbos!

    I love how he infers at the end that turbocharged cars aren't up to the task of higher mileage. Have plenty of customers with well over 300K on their Volvo's, a few even over 500K. I myself have owned a dozen or so high mileage turbocharged vehicles: a 290K mile Saab 9000, 250K 740 Turbo, 280K Saab 9-3, etc. The presence of a turbo does not make a car any more reliable or unreliable aside from the added heat & additional moving parts which is an inherent factor in cars anyway.
    It's all about maintenance.

    All that and Scotty missed the #1 and 2 ways most people destroy their turbochargers... not letting them spool down, and cool before shutting down their oil supply. Want to hose a turbo fast? Be that guy that pulls up, blips the throttle a couple of times, then shuts it off, or the guy that drives long enough to really heat-soak everything, then just shut the engine off without cooldown idle. We all know that guy.

  • @IliescuBenyamin

    0:55 Scotty, the reason why a turbocharged car makes more power is that with more air sent in by the turbo, you can send more fuel in (so more fuel and air mixture), bigger bang. It's artificially increasing the displacement of the engine. The fuel economy is obtained when you are cruising because you get less friction (power loss) with a smaller engine, and you use a small fraction of the car's power when cruising anyway.

      exhaust gases are wasted energy (exhaust gases are very hot) so a turbo charger recycles some of that energy. you wont save gas on full throttle, but you can save gas, by the turbo pushing enough air to bring the internal pressure to atmospheric inside the chamber which is what NA engines try to achieve.

They all have a lot of power but don't have anymore the smooth power ( torque ) to drive at lower rpm.........all old atmospheric diesels are gradually banned from the cities and you're fined if you do drive them into town ......
    even maintenance as simple as changing an oil filter, fuel and or air filter has become complicated .
    Fuel consumption follows the drivers style ...............below 5 L/100 Km hen driving smooth , above 10 L/100Km when you push.......
    135 HP / 1600 CC DIesel engine.
    Before with my older diesels , fuel consumption was typical between 5 and 7.5 L/100 Km ......
    My dealer refuses even to do an oil change and maintenance below the absurd scheduled one at 30.000 Km or yearly to date of purchase !!!! So i do change oil and filter myself at 15.000 , BUT without telling my dealer in witch case i would lose my garante...........it's all a scam !

    • @frankgeeraerts6243
      @frankgeeraerts6243 6 років тому +2

      YES they do !!!
      It's a new policy ............when you buy a new car , you have to sign a paper on witch is stated to respect the scheduled and mandatory maintenance of the dealership/manufacturer......if you comme to soon , they refuse , if you present your car to late you lose your garante...............if you go elsewhere to do the maintenance you lose it also. ( and only the oil prescribed by the manufacturer is accepted ...PSA 0W-30 (PSA B712312)....it has to have the prescribed acceptance code even if the viscosity is ok )
      It has become an enslaved prison economy ........i call this fascism.
      I bought the right oil and filters in France at one third of the price than billed by dealer .
      In case of an engine failure they check the oil .......and you better check the oil level between & before the next maintenance as some do not do .

    • @sliwka621
      @sliwka621 6 років тому

      Frank Geeraerts Damn PSA is going off the hook these days. But I bet it's most car companies that do this since my last new car I bought was in 2012 and the interval you could choose between the recommended 15 000 km and 7500 km. I mean 7500 is a bit nuts but I guess they wanted that service money.

    Scotty is right. Those in the comment section have never gone through the problem of repairing a turbocharged car. I wonder if the majority are not a bunch of 15 or 16 year olds who don't even know how to drive. Having a turbo is nice, having to repair one and dealing with the consequences of a blown turbo however is complete nightmare.

He thinks it's a frigging Porsche, everyone else sees a white wall of death coming towards them.

  • @HomebrewSubaru

    Whats with all the controversial videos? Turbo engines take wear faster because they are abused by drivers more often.
    If you not one to do regular oil changes, it doesn’t matter if you have a turbo or not.
    Many turbo cars nowadays get better fuel mileage than NA counterparts. That is why there are so many now.
    There is a replacement for displacement. It’s called forced induction. Smaller engines generally cost less in parts and service to repair.
    Enough already.

    Just had to change my turbo on my 2008 diesel Skoda Octavia, it was barely worth it.
    Now I see that it might be because I suck at checking/filling up my oil outside of regular service.
    It serves me well though, it can be nippy for it's size and does great mileage.

  • @BKDawg

    Obviously will need more maintenance and TLC. Its all up to the person who decides to purchase one. I own a BMW 335i with 2 turbos. There is absolutely no turbo lag. Maintenance costs are high, parts are expensive, but it sure is an experience that i cant get enough of.

    • @BKDawg
      @BKDawg 6 років тому +1

      Also, with proper maintenance, turbo cars can actually yield more efficiency than naturally aspirated. Theres also more tuning available for turbo cars as well. Clearly not the most practical thing, but if we want to get practical, we would all own used honda civics.

    Lesson Learned about Turbos. 1981 Pontiac Trans-am with 301 V8, he skipped on the maintenance on oil changes as they had to take the turbo off to replace the oil filter, blew up the turbo, and the 301 as well. replaced the engine with LT1 out of a Corvette no problems after that.

  • @mantriccaravan8228
    @mantriccaravan8228 6 років тому +4

    Excellent point...you should run premium in turbo engines. Better fuel economy and added hp. Something thats a bit misleading here is that
    turbo cars are more maintenance. Not necessarily true as long as you do regular tune ups, premium gas and a good synthetic oil that turbo should last pretty much the life of the car. Ive owned Volvos and Saabs all turbo none had issues.
