Ford is turbocharging all their vehicles because it's the only brand that have had the experience of making tons of money in Europe seeing that every single thing in a turbocharged diesel engine brakes horribly fast.
There is no real gain in maintenance and cost of driving around with a turbocharged engine because whatever you save on gasoline you end up paying in repairs......
ask a European mechanic turbo is a scam that serves only the manufacturer purposes and it should have never been applied to civilian cars...

I tend to stick with Toyotas and Hondas and consider a major reason why quality with Honda has gone down is because most sold in the U.S. are manufactured here now. American quality stinks for most cars. I attribute it to a lack of pride in doing quality work. How many of the Ford failures do you think is due to the design/implementation by Ford of the turbos?

      Scotty, I've grabbed a great deal on a fully loaded spec Prius 2nd generation for 1000$. The engine has ~85.000 miles and is mechanically sound with all the maintenance done on time, clean body, clean interior and new tires. The reason been so cheap is because the hybrid battery is dead. I've looked around for 3rd party batteries because the dealer's quote was for 4256$ (inc. labor) and I've found two choices;
One is for 1500$ same spec battery as the factory's and balanced with 4 years warranty. The other is for 2500$ higher density battery, balanced and with 3 years warranty. I kinda want the higher density one to try and get as much as possible fuel economy, should I go for it? Will I encounter any problems putting a larger out of spec battery or should I stick the standard?

One thing people need to understand is that spooling the turbo while the engine hasn't warmed up is actually really bad for the car. Meaning give it a few minutes after starting before hammering the throttle and forcing tons of air into a cold engine.

Thankfully it was covered by warranty otherwise over £900 (GB pounds) for the part alone. Yeah, I'm always checking the quality of engine oil on this car for him. My girlfriend has a 1.6 L turbocharged Kia Optima. Real world miles per gallon is about 30. Her job is 36 miles from home. All highway driving so she's getting to work for about 1 gallon of gas. And it's running on 87 octane 10% ethanol. She was driving a 315 horsepower Camaro, naturally aspirated with a big V6. Obviously the Camaro was a nicer car if you look at luxury, skid pad performance and acceleration Etc. But for the money it's pretty hard to beat a small turbocharged vehicle. Until it comes time to do maintenance. Because those turbocharged cars sure do go through spark plugs a lot quicker. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge with us

TheAikons Cameron got about 14mpg combined city/hwy. 10mpg in town, 18 highway. And don’t forget the tires for the Camaro with 20 inch wheels cost over $1000 for a decent set and they last about eight months. The Kia has 16 inch wheels with side walls which can hit a curb and not destroy the rim, and the ride quality is far superior compared to the camero. Like I said the Camaro is a nicer car (depending on how you judge niceness) but it’s way more expensive to operate and own. And the Kia brakes better in the rain. It’s South Florida where I live. Wet traction is very important. And yes I know the Camaro is definitely way cooler and more fun to drive no doubt about it

If the government has their way, eventually all cars will have turbocharged engines. I suspect the car companies are in favor of this as they won't last as long and will sell more new cars. Its almost like they're working together.

Torque in a modern turbocharged engine can peak before 2000 RPM, whereas with a naturally aspirated engine it usually dont peak until 4.000 RPM. This is a huge advantage in everyday driving and the main reason, why turbocharging is here to stay.

  • @hyojoonus

I love turbochargers. But I don't like how it's used in newer cars. They simply run too hot and cause accelerated aging in cars that have them.
Classic solution is an additional and independent air cooled oil cooler. But most manufacturers simply use a heat exchanger which heats up in unison all the parts connected to the cooling system including the transmission. It messes up everything.

TheChevyFan You don’t have to buy premium fuel unless we’re talking some ultra high end sports car like a Ferrari, in which case they won’t run properly on low test gas - but if you’ve got one of those then paying a little extra for premium isn’t an issue. You may lose some performance in a mass market turbo car on standard gasoline, but it’s not going to damage the engine in any way.

Razor The engine gets strained more due to the Supercharger relying on the engine to make power and not a turbine that turns the exhaust gases into fresh air for the explosions
It gets worse MPG since it pushes the engine more
      Its generally more unreliable
It doesn't work properly in low displacement or low power engines since it takes out more power for the SC than the engine has
Fyi if you want to supercharge a car, it better have a V6 with more than 2.5 liters of displacement and a good enough block to handle the punishment of the SC, otherwise they are useless in econo-boxes of any type. Superchargers are going extinct in a few years, but Electric superchargers seem to be a good enough concept to prevail

The actual reason turbo cars do not get claimed mileage is because higher cylinder pressure increases the likelihood of detonation, so extra fuel is added to cool down the combustion chamber. Just cruising around, the turbo is not doing a whole lot and cylinder pressure is relatively low, therefore a lean and efficient burn can be used. Drag race every stoplight or throw a trailer behind your ecoboost, and the computer is dumping fuel in like crazy to keep your engine from blowing up.
