- Every car has some common problems but the MK5 GTI suffers some problems that could land you with a bill for a full new engine! Not ideal.
Join me this week as we take a trip down to see renowned TFSI and Mk5 Golf GTI specialists R-Tech. These guys need no introduction and they quickly showed me the ropes on just what needs doing to protect and maintain these cars. Tune in to find out what we ended up doing and more importantly....how much it cost!

R-tech = masters of the Tfsi universe!
The MK5 Golf GTI is a popular build for UA-camrs and yours being an Edition 30 should get plenty of likes, views & subscribers!
If your planning on installing a decat or sports cat ensure you have uprated engine mounts (i.e. Powerflex inserts yellow/purple are perfect for road use, the black series is for track & will cause too much cabin vibration) as this will help with traction as well as eliminating the prospect of damaging your flexi. You want inserts for upper engine mount, lower engine mount, lower small bush & transmission mount (check mount design before ordering as there are two designs of the inserts).
Once you eventually decide on upgrading the intercooler opt for a front mount wellycooler or Airtec intercooler!
Ensure you do essential maintenance if your planning on keeping this car for the channel like cam chain, tensioner, cambelt, water pump & main thermostat if your car is not getting up to operating temperature and staying at 90 on the cluster (it should not drop below 90). Also, ensure you get walnut blasting & injector clean done by Rtech as they do a package deal when going stage 2+! Another preventative maintenance mod is to do the runner flap delete whilst having your valves walnut blasted as they are known to break & fall into the engine!

Check Timing
- 01 Engine > Measuring Block > Group 91 & 93
Fuel Injector Misfire Count
- 01 Engine > Measuring Block > Group 14, 15 & 16
Fuel Rail Pressure
- 01 Engine > Measuring Block > Group 001 (coolant temperature needs to be minimum 80 celcius) & 106/230
- Turn car off then switch back to ignition and access measuring block > 106/230. If the fuel rail pressure doesn’t increase (after few mins) when coolant temperature is 80+ celcius this generally implies a fuel pressure leak i.e. leaking injector.

This comment is hugely helpful and much appreciated. Thanks for the advise and more importantly the support 👌🏼
Love this comment, Just bought myself a 2008 S3. Will defo need some of these parts you've mentioned 💪
I had exactly the same work done on my Mk5 at R-Tech. Noticed no difference but just gives you some reassurance that hopefully nothing will go wrong! They are a great bunch of blokes & I would recommend them - particularly for anyone with a Mk5. Great video as always & keep them coming👍
Thanks for the kind words. I agree, quality bunch down there 👍🏼
I had the ballance shaft delete done last month at R-Tech. They are very thorough and did a great job. For those asking about more vibration or any differences, I didnt feel any at all. It doesnt feel like it revs faster, doesnt feel like it has effected the car negatively at all. I timed mine for when I needed an oil and filter change any way.
Mati, im enjoying the journey with this one. Great content!
Definitely makes most sense to time it with an oil change and I definitely agree it literally makes no difference to how the car feels regarding vibration!
How much was it with oil and filter change?
@@samb394 I dont have the invoice with me but I think it was in the 400's including the oil pick up and some other bits. Worth giving them a call for your own quote incase your situation is different to mine.
My white Rocco having the R Tech treatment at 5.10 in the video 👍
I look around this! Sick car mate👍🏼
@@matimcfetridge cheers mate. K03 hybrid running 365bhp 👌
Mati, could you give some direction on what aspects of the work was regular maintenance, and what was preventative maintenance? Would you have done any of the work if you were not going to be chasing extra power figures? Cheers in advance, brother!
Wiked video mate. Not sure if your car been mapped, should of got the guys to do it whilst you was down there. Iv got a ed30, the balance shaft delete something I'm considering.
Hi mate, will be a video on stage 1 very shortly. Then a few mods and R Tech will have their way with it 👀 stay tuned!
Wud u not change the pcv yourself
Do you know what silicone selant is used / recommended? Thanks!
looks more like 5mm of sealant, broke his own rule lol would love to see some one test differnt amounts as you see alot of people on youtube complain about the amount of squished out sealent, then when rebuilding seem to put on just as much. When ive seen the robots in thr factorys apply it looks about 3mm.
Amazing price for all that I’d say!!
I didnt think it was too bad!
Which LED bulbs did you use?
Hi , nice vid 🦾 . Do you have dimensions for heat shields ?
I don’t, I’m afraid it will depend on which intake you have. A couple of quick measurements and a cardboard mock up will see you right!
Hi, what about revs? Do you feel any difference, for example, the engine revving faster? Thanks
I’ve been told the engine should rev faster, but in all honesty, I haven’t noticed a difference.
what engine are you thinking about putting in the mk2
Anything that fits 😂
How come all the work was so cheap is 300£ labour and parts
Why change the dipstick?
Believe the original is know to not seal very well or something like that. Only a few quid so worth it either way.
Did you notice any more engine vibration after getting the balance shaft deleted?
Must admit, I noticed absolute nothing whatsoever! Someone else said to expect more vibration but literally cannot tell the difference. Still stock bushes everywhere so maybe compensates a little?
could you please give me your contact... have few questions about my ed30...
r tech sorted my golf there awesome they did my balance shaft delete and injector and inlet clean and cam chain and vvti gear change ! car runs awesome and they mapped it too !
They are some sort of wizards down there I swear 😂👍🏼
You look like someone slightly different. Weight loss maybe
