George, don't know if we tell you enough how important you are to this channel. Your skills are impressive. Thank you.
I appreciate that!
Yes thank you George great job 🏆🏆🏆🏆
Nick, you owe George a bottle of Cutty!
Thank you, George, for having Nick's back with the computer things. You're more valuable than most of us know. ❤
Nick is so polite and honest, puts a smile on my face to hear you Talk!
Those exhaust manifolds are from Thorstons Olds Restoration in Pennsylvania. Excellent pieces! 1972 Olds V8's had 8.5:1 compression so that was a fairly stock rebuild. Nice and reliable.
So beautiful, the W-31 was a work horse, had lots of torque. Spin tires in circles forever!
nice TIG welds on those shorty headers.
Oldsmobile!!! Once a flagship for GM: nice to still see the old iron making its presence known!!! Nice video guys, and George, keep up the excellence!!
We appreciate you, JJ! Thank you.
Wow, another W-31 engine on the Dyno!! You hardly ever hear about a W-31, and now another one shows up at Nick's Garage, which is really amazing. Anxious to see the numbers this engine will make compared to the other W-31 we saw recently. Here We Go!!!
Reminds us of bus service on a cold day.. they don't come along for ages, and then three come at once.😃
hi Eugene.
@@NicksGarage Lol, so true. I loved this video George, especially the part where you got the Dyno up and running again while the cam was breaking in. If there is another W-31 next week I'm going to Las Vegas.💰
@@ericball6000 Hi Eric.
W31? Weren't those a 1968- 1970 performance option? I thought the present motor was a low compression 1972 version.
He can see what it feels like when it's in the car, and if it isn't enough power,he can always bring it back to Nick for some more 😊
...for a 455ci....
I`ve watched Nicks videos for so many years that I feel I could diagnose or rebuild an engine. Lol
Thank you Paul for your service and Thank You George for being there when Nick needs your help!
Nick....You need a backup Generator for power outages, but THANK YOU for the dyno testing. I really look forward to those tests and all the details like the needed 150 PSI Compression for power.
Looking forward to more Dyno Testing!
That old rusty carb needs a rebuild. I'm 2000 miles away and I can see that. 😁
There isn’t very much Olds content, so two weeks in a row, what a treat! Leave it to a Mopar guy to deliver some quality Olds vids😊Thanks Nick and all!
Ive always loved these older Olds engines! Love the short stroke, and a wide intake with long runners. These small block ram rods can really put out some power, those huge 455 valves probably help. Lol
I have a 68 and a 69 W31, along with several Olds BB from 1965-69. The 1966 395HP 425 Rocket has always been my favorite for some reason. They just dont make them like this anymore.
18:46 George the Cameraman-Computer Technician to the rescue 😅 Cheers from New Zealand
Cheers, Steve.
Thank you, Paul, for your services to our country and thank you for sharing your beautiful Cutlas with us. That engine sounds sweet!
Hey Nick, to protect your computers, if you don't already have it, you should install a UPS, provides short backup power and safe shutdown for your electronics including your monitors. All my computers and electrical gear at home are connected to multiple UPS devices. :)
Nice to see the Oldsmobile back on the dyno. We need some big blocks up there next!
The old quadrbog bites again!!!!!!thank goodness for Saint Nicks.hang in their spring soon thank you for the show.
Thanks for watching.
Love the Olds 350. I just spent a fortune rebuilding one. Now 358 ci, Performer RPM converted for SEFI with Holley Terminator X Max, Holley 350 LPH retorfit in tank pump and Holley Dual Sync distributor controlling fuel and spark. Mahle forged 1mm ring pack pistons, Molnar rods and a 330 forged crank and Canton oil pan. I currently have fairly fresh 2.07" intake valve 1970 #6 heads for 9.5 to 1 and an Edelbrock 204/214 .448/.472 114 LSA cam installed at 106 ICL with stock replacement rocker arms. I have a 218/218 .541/.541 112 LSA Lunati custom roller cam, Comp Evolution hydraulic roller lifters with 1.65 Harland Sharp 7/16" stud rocker arms for the new Edelbrock small chamber heads which hopefully get released. Supposed to happen over the last two years. If not, milled Procomp heads will get installed. Those Thornton shorty headers on this 350 do cost some power over full length, a few tests have been done by Cutlassefi, Mark Remmel. My cam break in of course was frantic, fan controller blew a fuse. I had to shut down and jump fans direct to battery to cool it down. Always something.
Dr. Olds has made a house call! Now we need the coveted 455!
That would be fun.👍
Ooh Yes !😊 Cheers from New Zealand
Lack of cylinder head sealing was the downfall of 455. Can’t boost or nitrous due to not enough head bolts
@@vinceyoung5912Head studs and MLS gaskets would remedy that. But who the hell needs nitrous on a 455? If you wanna go THAT fast, just buy a 540 BB Chevy.
@@JeffKopis Mazdaratti
Paul, thank you for your service, Dr. Nick & George thanks for plowing on during the storm, that Olds 350, sounds great, and I like those shorty headers, cheers.
Our pleasure! Thanks for being here again, Eric.
Thank you, Paul, for your faithful service to a dear allied nation. On our border and in our hearts 💕. Susan from the USA.
must have been a long time ago...
I do think it will pick up another 5-10 horses with the quadrajet. Because the holley adapter makes a horrible plenum with turbulence from the 2 big holes and 2 small holes from the manifold. Love your channel Nick! keep it up.
Oldsmobile had the strongest bottom ends , that’s why they used them to make diesels . My pop had a 1981 Custom Cruiser and we drove it home from the dealer and at the top of our hill the engine grenaded , with only 20 miles ! The only thing in that car that worked flawlessly was the clock ! lol !
The diesel 350 was a different block from gas 350
Yup and it was one of gm's biggest failures. Junk engine.
The turbo 200 transmission was another pile of garbage. Even sick cylinders were trashing them.
Nice video, Nick seems to be a great mechanic who cares about his customers!
The ….31 was a sweet motor. No big thrills, just consistent power, never let you down. 😃👍
My 72 Cutlass was at over 140,000 miles when I bought it cheap with a burned out Turbo 350 transmission in 86. That 350 Rocket engine was one of the 2 engines I owned that scared me. The other was a 65 model year 352 T-bird engine that was well worn out. Both of those engines were screamers. The Olds didn't use much oil and I never had the nerve to find out what its limits were. The T-bird engine was an oil burner and I wound it out just 1 time. After letting off the gas too quick, I nearly lost that car when it dived to the left and nearly went off the road. After coasting down for about a tenth of a mile, the speedometer was still well over 120 mph. That slowed me down and convinced me to give up my lead footed ways.
You are easily scared 😂
I love when nick does an Olds engine. The Olds 350 is how i found this channel a few years ago.
God bless our servicemen and women in Canada and Nick, you are the best. Learned a few new things in this video. Let's GO!!!!!!!!!
1972 low compression Rocket 350!!! Should do great on 87 octane fuel!!!
Indeed. And it sounds great doing it.
Awesome! Another olds test! My first muscle car was a 1970 442 455 with factory Fresh Air Hood, orange with black stripes ! That car ran 13.90s bone stock with 90,000 untouched miles!
Nice Olds test and you just need a large UPS to handle a few screens and computers. Probably a unit in the 2000Va range.
Maybe I'll bring my '66 Toronados 425 to Nick's someday.
The 425 is a Wonderful engine !
Paul, thank you for your service! I know you are in Canada and I’m in the US, still, they are allies, so thank you! I did 11 years in the National Guard, Ky and Ohio combined, left in 86 as a E5 , Sargent.
Need to let Nick take that apart and rebuild with some good parts
I like the music George
............. Thank you ALL! I'm only 82yo still learning.
Cheers,
Malcolm
thanks for your service Paul!
Oldsmobile 👍
Man I loved these cars back in the day as a kid.
I'm in Minnesota and love your channel, i have 2 Oldsmobile motors a 72 350ci and a1969 455ci the rusted car bodies are long gone but the motors live on
Not a MOPAR but still a great motor that Buick people enjoy . 👍🏻🇦🇺.
George George extremely important to Nick's garage. I thank you...✌
George you are just good man you are so good at Belmont and being aware of everything around you and what to do with the content and everything oh yeah I think I told you but I like your music too right on George
I hope they show more Oldsmobile 350 or 455 💪
We are glad you enjoy them.
I would be very proud of that engine....the sound is incredible and it will move that Oldsmobile with authority!!!!! and the Cherry on top is Nick's break-in and tuning!!!! WOW what a great experience to have...... I hope to visit Nick's Shop someday!
Nice nick I have 70 350 Oldsmobile rocket 🚀 in a 84 cutlass with comp cam higher compression sounds amazing glad I kept the Olds motor in it now getting rare thanks nick 👍
Love watching Nick work his magic . I can't remember the man's name that sent Nick the old Black Carburetor , heck of a Carb ...always gets the job done and great results too !!! Glad the gentleman is getting dream car more closer to moving and we appreciate his service to Canada. Have fun with the Cutlass !!!! Best Regards to everyone !!!
i like how thick those header flanges are very nice
Great looking items.
Battery backup for the computer system is a good idea to avoid power loss issues.
Great video Nick and George! Great engine in a really great car. The work Paul has done on the car so far looks fantastic. He is going to have one sweet Oldsmobile when he is done.
Olds V8's always had a distinct sound idling. Blindfolded you could tell it was not a chevy or buick.
Paul, Nick lives for this kind of stuff. He should be charging you for letting him play with your car!
Nick finds the source of the vacuum leak 👍
At least the power glitches didn't cause any issues Nick but that Old's will be a nice cruiser and I'm sure you will get the rest sorted. Have an awesome week ahead Nick & all.
That’s a great W-31. Solid.
Oh those olds shorty tube manifolds look awesome . Love the look .
Yes they do.
If I find it's lean on start up during a cam break in I'll wind the 4 mixture screws out a few turns to help, plus I'll make sure the ignition timing is 40 to 46 degrees during that time, it really helps to reduce the exhaust temperature.
Made in 72 to go on Nick's Dyno Paul's 350 is one of the chosen few It's an oldsmobile lump so it's gold not blue Nick never loses heart when an engine refuses to start When you got a cam to break in you need to start the motor for the process to begin Luckily for Paul Nick's got solutions wall to wall That's why from Nick there's no negative emotion Just decisive motion Nick's Garage shows all cars the proper devotion A turn here and a tweak there and she'll start right up shown some tender care Even through a power cut you can trust Nicks Gut the cam break in period you can't interupt Even with a pump that is starting to leak Nick's Garage it can't defeat Nick's Garage just keeps getting better every single week On discovering low compression Nick has always got a suggestion not giving his clients what they want is out of the question So come on down and enjoy the vibe and by all means you can like and for goodness sake subscribe! Thanks Nick Shout out to Paul for sharing Big ups George for production Nice to see Paul's motor flourish inspite of minor obstruction
Woo! Always a banger, Roberto!
@@NicksGarage Thanks man I appreciate it Every vid of yours is lit
George nick is lucky to have wonderful friend like you to do such awesome filming for him an i still say this is the best car channel on UA-cam
Nice job on that vacuum leak Nick ‼️
You tamed and tuned that Olds .. a true professional.
I used A Propane torch, Move the Gas around until the Engine Revved, Thats where the leak is.
I brought Tonys W31 from Houston. Unsung hero
Nice!
It may be rebuilt but if it sat for 5 years I would never trust a carb to just work. Things dry up and parts like the accelerator pump will stop working just like that. That’s a smart move you run motors off your own proven carbs that get used often 👍
Great job Nick...good content good to see a factory rebuild.....thanks👍
Glad you enjoyed it.
Nice when you have an engine that the heads allow the plugs and wires to be away from the exhaust manifolds / headers. Like the good old Hemi 👍👍
Some engines are bad for that especially when headers are used.
Paul I love the sound of your Olds Engine!!!
THANK YOU FOR SHARING,
Thanks for watching!
heres one for the grandads. thanks george,,
Great Job George!!!! I and everyone very appreciate all you do !!!! YOU DA MAN !!!!!
Thanks Sarge.
I love to hear 4 speed. It is music to my ears.
Right on.
Hi Nick, I always thought that the 350’s from Chevy Olds Buick and Pontiac were really good engines. Reliable as a mule and if set up properly well any small block can beat a big block if setup correctly. Myself I am a late 70’s Eldorado fan great cars and with the front wheel drive can really get through any Philadelphia changes in the seasons. Great Videos Thank You 🙏. And George when can we see more about your car?? Thanks 🙏
lt is what it is and glad he is happy with his engine.....Thanks Nick and guy's 👍
Old Shoe🇺🇸
We appreciate the visit, Steve.
Congrats Paul......I think Your Cutlass will be sweet.
Olds in south Louisiana shrimping skiffs
Those tubular manifolds are super nice . One aspect not discussed on Nick's garaged relating to header or these manifolds is the efficiency and exhaust scavenging with headers and these tubular shorty header. They can improve. Efficiency and gas mileage which is always a plus . So while headers suck in most situations , there are those benefits to a shorty header
Over a cast iron manifold . There are exceptions where a header style cast iron manifold work exceptionally well . The olds , Ford FE , chevy small block and other stock manifolds while quiet , are not adding any performance enhancements or mileage increases.
Scottinsoca
liked the engine keeps singing on the dyno good one George 😂
Nick I wish I was closer to you I’d bring my 1970 455 for a dyno day.
The accelerator pump diaphragms on the quadrajet rebuild kits don’t last long with the ethanol fuels nowadays. Mine would only last a few seasons before drying up. Had to buy an alcohol specific one separately before it became reliable after sitting over the winter.
I would get a new carburetor and water pump and leave it alone. Very reliable engine that can run on any gas. Perfect for cruising.
I love Monday dyno's!
Gasoline in a mustard squirt bottle to fill the bowl for initial start up. Quick and simple zero mess.
That right George yous the man it's me frank zappa
The reason there's a hole up on the intake is BAcause there is sposed to be a tit stem that screws into the intake its for the carb vacuum its missing on his most of them had it..i blocked mine with a wide bolt and put sealer around it and sealed in the threads..
Love the olds W-31 !
Ahhh, the weather
Awesome runner will be a lot of fun when finished keep them coming and see you Friday
Thank you!
You just can't beat the reliability of an olds engine they may not have a lot of HP but they run good I have a 350 blue rocket in my 79 olds it runs like a deer I want one of these this is what they called the gold rocket beefy engine you can git descent HP out of one these..the blocks are strong..
Nick, you all have a battery powered backup source for your computers and monitors? If not, you should get one. It'll keep you from having these issues. I've got one on my computer as they are not terrribly expensive. Enjoy watching you keeping the old iron going!
Open vacuum port on intake may be fore cruise control or heater.
I knew a guy had an olds 350 dropped to replace his mid 80s Diesel . Rebuilt it, put a mild cam , and 2.5" dual through exhaist manifolds, and would burn out through intersections. Wasnt say fast, but it did shred tires.
Good luck w the 72.. Would love to see it done.. Row them gears!
We hope Paul will make his way back to the shop once the car is on the road.
The Gremlins were in "full Form" during this one, but team effort prevailed. Something that popped into my head watching this. How did the the OEM's handle "cam Break-in" in the day?
Enjoyed the video, Nick.
hi Dr. Nick, hi George.
Hello there!
go Olds go !!!
Nick tell him to put an Elder brock Aluminum water pump on there and it's also Rebuildable for later on.
in 72 Olds put valve seats in the heads but you have to check for them .
I wonder if thin head gaskets and a bit more cam wouldn't help with power output.
Engine sounds beautiful.
