In 1968 my friend in Rock Island, Il. put a 427 Side Oiler in his 1967 Mustang. At the time I was 19 y/o and though I loved fast cars I didn't realize what a rare engine he had. His engine had two four barrel carbs with a four speed. We never knew how much hp the engine turned out, but racing on the streets of Davenport, Iowa (across the river) he was never beaten. Corvettes, Roadrunners, and Chevelle SS never came within a full car length. The Mustang weighed about 3200 lbs. The cars owner was Lyle Whitney. He passed away about two years ago.

My brother had a 69 with a 351 Windsor (he put a 4.56 rear end in it, I think), and beat a guy that had a 440 six pack, I had a 428 Cobra Jet, a friend had a 65 with a 289 and fiberglass tilt hood, one of us had a 67/68 Shelby, and another bought a 67', but not sure of the size, although I'm sure it had a big motor. I love the 427 FEs. They're hugely significant in the realm of muscle cars and racing, and it blows my mind how little aftermarket support they have. They were dominant in NASCAR, they helped Ken Miles and Dan Gurney break the Le Mans lap record 4 times, for a while they were the only non hemi engine permitted to run in the SS/AH class. Great engines that get no love, and it's b.s.

The lack of aftermarket was due to its early demise in factory cars and also Ford’s own factory support. Their performance catalog from the early 70’s listed several factory heads, manifolds, cams & pistons etc. Newer big smog V-8’s were easier/cheaper to come by and had little factory support, so it made more sense for companies to focus there.

I bought a junker 390 engine to get it going and later built a performance 390 for it. Sure had a lot of fun with it. Won a lot of street races and lost a few too. Sold it after I got married because it didn't fit the "plan". Still regretting that move. lol

This was a real unusual engine because they had three versions. The single overhead cam, the side oiler, and the conventional block. It's the engine that won Le Mans twice
IIRC in the GT 40 they didn't use the highest horsepower version - it had a single four barrel.
    carburetor as I recall.
What I love about these old engines versus the high-tech engines of today.
You pull up to a red light in a 426 hemi or 427 Ford and everybody around you knew that you had a high-performance car. And these days the high-performance engines are so quiet and with camshafts that change performance with RPM even the idle sounds like a Volkswagen

30 or so years ago I built a 427 top-oiler for a project. It was a reverse-rotation marine engine, and I learned a lot about these FEs. To reuse the crank I had to have it machined to remove the oil slingers so it wouldn't squirt out the rear main seal. Also, all 427s had cross-bolted mains. The marine engine had a cast iron oil pan that easily weighed 40lbs and it had mismatched low-riser heads. I wish I had it today to do a proper build with Trick Flow alum heads; easy 600hp.

I never even got to hear it run, it ended up in Florida, I listed it, and a circle track race guy came up and bought it. I did have a 1962 Ford 2 door post car, with a 406 cu in, 405 hp, 4 speed, 4:11 rear, absolutely stripped car, no radio, rubber mats, bench seat, for a big car, it ran pretty good, I didn’t have it very long, but it was a nice ride.

Would be interesting to see how the Edelbrocks compare to the factory high riser heads. We did one a while back, the customer was scammed on the block, where a shop had done a terrible job of installing sleeves in a block that was cracked across the deck and we deemed it junk. We ended up doing a 428 block/4.25 stroke with the 427 medium riser heads and side winder intake, reused his Lunati 425 HP solid cam, and we made well over 500 HP. We did have to do some work on the top of the cylinders to clear the valves of the 427 heads. A nice pump gas street combo in a 67 Fairlane with a top loader trans.

Need to get rid of that oil fill cap on the driverside valve cover and put a breather in its place. Don't know why so many people run these caps on Fords. 58-64 era FE engines had crankcase ventilation through a mesh screen oil fill cap out of the front of the intake manifold and exited via a road draft tube at the back of the manifold. The OEM valve covers had no provisions for crankcase ventilation/breathers/pcv. In 1965 the FE recieved valve covers with PCV and breather style oil fill caps. Crank case ventilation is a big deal not to ignore. Not Nicks fault, thats just how he recieved it from the owner.

Awesome engine! I love the cackle from the cam inside.
Thanks Dr. Panaritis for taking the time to explain what a side oiler engine is and how it works.
It would be very interesting to know what kind of numbers it would have produced with an electrical tune up, new plugs and wires, and of course letting Nick dial in the best timing.
I'm betting he could have gotten back to the 410 number from the factory specs.
I also appreciate how rare that engine is, and Nick's ability to stop, rather than risk damaging something that scarce. It's not like you can call the Auto Zone and order a short block like it was a Chevy 350.

Thanks Nick. I'm a FoMoCo guy first, but have lots of respect for the 383 - 440 Mopar big block in all configurations, wedge, hemi, no matter. Big Block Chevys and Pontiacs too, I guess. As a person who lived and dreamt about cross bolted FE's all the way through the 80's and 90's, I guess I'm one of those Cliff Claven types when it comes to the muscle car era FoMoCo "Total Performance" engines. I machined at a performance engine shop that built 50 SBC's to every 1 of anything else, but every now and then we built and raced a few Mopars and all variants of Ford muscle era V8's back then. So, if Cliff was here right now, he would say that other than the ultra rare 68 427 side-oiler, no 427 blocks had lifter oiling for hydraulic lifters. The side-oiler was 65-68. The dual 4 barrel 425 hp versions were available in all years except the 68 427's. The single 4 barrel 410 hp version was available in all years of the 427 except 66. I still have complete original Ford shop manuals for the Ford Full Size Cars, including 427's, for 65 and 66, as my Dad had a Ford full size wagon with a 352 when I was little. The stock side oiler steel crank 427 was good to 6000 rpm easy.

400 from a stock-ish engine in the 60s was insane. Look at those torque numbers though, 400+ through the whole range. I don't have any experience with a side-oiler but my father and I did build a center-oiler together and it was at least this if not a little more. (probably around 500ish if i had to guess). That car was a blast, but also scary.
Something else to note, I love the Ford 427 heads. Look how easy it is to get to the spark plugs and exhaust flanges. Ridiculous. The intake manifolds were also extremely easy to remove / install. We actually owned (may still I'll have to check) one of those rare dual 4 barrel carb intake manifolds although I don't remember if it was factory or not.

I'm wondering what the significance is of the 'R/H side main oil passage location' is on this design... I've heard of this design as being one that was specifically intended for closed course racing.... Cars that were designed to handle a lot of lateral acceleration... I'm thinking the correct engine in that car will help it sell to enthusuasts who want close to OEM equipment in their vehicles... The 'side-oiler' engine should be of interest to people who have a genuine racing vehicle from that era (early to mid 1960's).... Keep these episodes coming !!! They are awesome !!!
