  • Rory goes for a drive in the new Tesla Model 3 Performance, which some people have been referring to as the Model 3 Plaid. It has more power, more torque, more performance, a new motor, new seats, and has been comprehensively overhauled to help it rival everything in its class… and even a few unlikely suspects.

But for almost double the price of a used taycan vs brand new Tesla it’s not comparable price/value wise the Tesla is faster, lighter and better network over the air updates, supercharging network plenty of things make the Tesla the winner by far other then looks.

For sure. I bought my M3P a little over 1 year ago having never driven one. I was shopping for a Camaro SS but the dealerships were charging approximately $5,000.00 over MSRP, plus mandatory dealer addons and I just refuse to do that. Same story with the Charger or Challenger. I just figured YOLO and took a chance on the M3P, and I don't regret it. Being able to beat nearly anything on the road (in a midsize sedan no less) is fun, and the car is comfortable. The only time I go to a gas station now is to get gas for my lawnmower. I love the sound of a rumbling V8 and if I could afford it, I'd have one (or more) of those as well.

I can't remember which, but there is at least one EV out there that makes an artificial kind of spaceship zooming sound when you accelerate quickly, and I remember a reviewer saying it was so pointless yet still brought him so much joy to get that audio feedback while driving. While faint, I agree that the electric whine I hear when I accelerate my (non performance) M3 does add to the enjoyment of speeding up. May be fun for Tesla to add that as an internal sound-effect at some point.

With stalks is really easy and quite natural to hit it when you want to indicate your actions, hand just naturally slides over stalk to the direction you will be going and that's that, with buttons... Well... It's unnecessary complication. Tesla should add option or a kit which would allow you bring back those stalks, it would fly out of the shelfs like hot buns.

BUT... he needs to do more testing as he was on a cliff face so he wasn't exactly going to fully test it. So it is good but not the best.

What is the road noise like? I was in a model 3 for the first time ever in February on my trip to San Francisco and was really surprised just how noisy it was on the motorway. Like my Audi with all it's windows rolled down going a 100. I hope they improved that because for me it is one of the most important aspects of a car.

Even a plaid running 0 to 60 in 2 seconds is not considered a supercar killer. Best value performance car should go to m3p. 2.9 second car for 45k is simply amazing

Missing noise, no respect for your opinion. My E46 M3 is so loud I can’t use the stereo, my 2019 M3P is quiet so I drive to music.

    • @barygol

Exactly. Noise is something from the past. Why would you want that when you can have the same or more power without disturbing you and other people. I can listen to good music and still enjoy the power.
