You could say that about LOTS of car brands these days. Jag's aren't Jags, MG's aren't MG's, Porsche & Lambos' are owned by VW; the list goes on and on...I stopped caring years ago! At the end of the day you either like it, or you don't, it's for you, or it isn't (IMO!) This will likely be quite cheap (comparatively) to lease, and even better to buy used in a few years after depreciation.

Well, it's a Geeley with a Lotus badge on it... so if you have to ask that question, you haven't been paying attention. The whole idea here is to get Westerners to pay European car money for a Chinese product. The irony is, the Chinese product is actually better than the European equivalent in a lot of ways... I didn't watch his video so perhaps I shouldn't be too quick to talk. But surely he understood what he was buying before buying it? It was pretty obvious that the Emira was less sportscar and more GT car compared to previous Lotus models.
Also, "Just a Badge" is an exaggeration. Take a look at Porsche and Jaguar and how they've changed over the years. This change in Lotus seems far less drastic, at least at this time.

Basically a Chinese company has bought the rights to the Lotus brand name and they're launching luxury electric vehicles which bear absolutely no resemblance to Lotus whatsoever. Lotus have never made 'luxury' vehicles.
They're good looking cars but just not loyal or true to the name. Not for me.

    • @TD1237
      @TD1237 3 місяці тому +29

You're right about Lotus' typical class of cars but they've actually been Chinese owned since 2017. This change in strategy sorta makes sense. They need money to build more sports cars. And even though the Emira isn't exactly your classic Lotus, it does demonstrate that they're not just going to abandon sports cars entirely. And there's the Evija as well. But I do understand where you're coming from.

All brands need to evolve to survive...folks were saying the same when VW group took over Lambo years ago, but do we really want an "old school pure sports car" with no power steering, an ancient 5-speed gearbox, bloodthirsty 8mpg v12 engine that has less output than a modern turbo-V6, speedometer and fuel gauge that don't work half of the time, and the worst of them all, certain models had no AC...lol no thank you

    • @MrSlowly63
      @MrSlowly63 3 місяці тому +1

      @@mtx1212 Two things:
One: This here is NOT the same thing as VW buying Lambo or Bugatti or whatever. Piëch was a petrol head first and foremost and he was clever enough to keep the spirit and the people at these companies the way they were and just make them run more efficiently by sharing parts and using the economies of scale. What we're seeing with lotus is all the company's philosophy thrown out (I mean simplify and add lightness on any of their cars today? Not even slightly...) and just the name being slapped onto these appliances.
Two: I totally see your point about lambos. But the simple fact is that Lambo made their name creating outrageous cars. Do you seriously think anyone would have even heard of the name Lamborghini if they had decided to make sensible, reliable, easy to drive cars? If all cars were technically flawless they would become soulless appliances. And that, I'm afraid, is exactly what we're seeing with 'Lotus' and lots of other electric cars.

I would have thought the things mentioned about would have disqualified it from being even drivable let alone amazing. Not making the driver feel sick is kind of a minimal requirement in a car I would have thought.

They want to play out with other companies because they understand that lotus has failed as a company for so long. Yes people buy their cars but only SPECIFIC buyers Buy them. They want to build something you can see on the roads everyday so they can make more money. I like the car overall, I think it looks great. But I expected it to be the best handling or at least at par with the taycan, maybe excelling in feeling more than precision. So this is a real bummer for me. At least theoretically they could fix a lot of it via software. For me it's biggest rival is the lucid air. I love it. The build quality and specially materials (which you didnt mention) are on the highest level ever (far better then in a Taycan, E-tron and specially tesla)...everything and i mean EVERYTHING is covered in leather or alcantara, even things that in Taycan are of plastic. Then it has much much much more space in the rear, then a Taycan, so it can be also a business limousine (which taycan cant be), it is a 5-door coupe, so you can also transport lets say a dog in the boot (which the competition cant, because 4-doors) and i think that the problem with the launch was, that you deactivated the ESC - in the case it yould be activated, it would handle the chasis better. And the design is breathtaking, specially in this cool yellow. I'm sure that the taycan drives better in corners (because its a Porsche and also because its smaller and lighter), but everything else is better at the Emeya. I would go with the 612 Version, which is far more then enough and get me even a little more range.

And no, this can't be considered the new Carlton. The only one that comes very close to being that is the CT5-V Blackwing, or the old Chevy SS, or the recently dead Dodge Charger Jailbreak. No one, with any amount of arguing could convince me that this is a true Lotus. A last one of those was the Emira, and that won't be alive for too long as well. Curious about the Lotus charging card; does that come with the car and what are the T's & C's? This is where in the UK, Porsche and Audi lose out, they give you a charging card but if you're lucky only £500 of credit at the start. If you own a Taycan or Etron GT in the US, you get lifetime free charging with EA, one has to question the disparity.

Significant difference, Lotus are offering in the UK at least 0% APR finance, Porsche and Audi charge for the privilege, up to 9.9%. On this value of car on a lease that is significant. Presently you can have an Eletre R for half the price monthly of a 2024 Taycan Turbo S. And the car market is moving more and more toward finance than outright ownership.

However, I must object to your use of the word "Quality" at 10:30. Quality is the conformance to specs. It doesn't matter if the spec is a 20 hp Model T or a 1000 hp Bugatti. Were the parts made within the blueprint tolerances or not? Was the car assembled correctly, and within the tolerances allowed by its 'prints and specifications? That is Quality, not the impressiveness of the specifications or the tightness of the allowed tolerances.

    "Not a real Jaguar"
    "Not a real Land Rover"
    "Not a real Rolls Royce"
The British public seem desperate to want manufacturers to stick to selling cars in tiny numbers just so they can think about the 'good old days'. Seems they'll only be happy if a company is teetering on the edge of collapse.

It looks to me like a Chinese designed Pontiac. No European flair whatsoever

They focussed way too much on bling. Barely fits on the road and then its handling is as per this review even worse than that of a model S then it has nothing to do with a Lotus.
    - nimble? Nope
    - light? Nope
    - Amazing handling? Nope
Reminds me more of a BYD Han on steroids. For the price of a used Taycan.... that actually charges as fast as it says on the box.

Its sad seeing lotus dying before us. A heavy ev saloon isnt a lotus. Sorry but where is all the lightweight innovation? Colin chapman would be spinning in his grave. Jaguar is going to die as well. No future ice cars... big mistake!!

Who does 0 to 60? Has anyone ever done it on every or any car they’ve driven. Who cares? All these stupidly powerful electric cars are just batteries with a bodys on them. All of them will drive and feel almost the same. Nauseatingly fast acceleration and poor body control. Buy one and then complain. I’m in my seventies and I will never have to buy one.

Another 'we want the Chinese market' designed car ... you look at those old Lotus, and then this monstrosity ... Perfect 'Lotus' spec ... but terrible big car spec ... makes the body look massive, and the black wheels like tiny .... poor spec not helping the terrible design much

Living in a big city I’ve lost count of the amount of times my wing mirrors have been damaged or destroyed. Imagine the cost of replacing those cameras?

€150,000 is mental. I guess that's a fair price if buying by the kilo however 😅

For a £130k the short comings highlighted aren't good enough, a cheap Chinese EV with a Lotus badge and a Taycan price tag but without the engineering of the Porsche.

I appreciate the sticky comment explaining the technical issues, but why rush it out? Or why make it at all? This video feels useless and disappointing.
Not to dampen my appreciation for this great presenter and an overall great channel ❤

I came to realize that car companies which are famous for sport cars need to diversify to be able to compete in this economy and climate regulations. Im not mad at lotus if they produce their usual normal engined cars along-side these..

When it comes to the charging section, I bet the car wasn't pre-conditioned. Probably not Rory's fault, the car should do it if you have a charger planned in. Sorry to say it, but no one makes it easier than Tesla

Probably really great EV, but is still think Geely should keep Lotus as a niche car brand making lightweight sports cars. Lotus should be doing what MG has done with Cyberster, 2 setter sports EV, and they should also stil do Lotus Elise successor.
And still for me Porsche Taycan is king at least until Audi E-tron GT update comes on the road 😊😅
Rory another awesome video keep up with great work
